Amazing race. I don't like how the commentators undersell it. "Didn't break 39... But he broke 40!" As if this isn't one of the greatest swim accomplishments of the decade. Dressel is amazing

he went 40.0 a year before this. I don’t think it was unreasonable to assume he’d have gone a 38 high especially since he was firing off 17’s like they were nothing. As Rowdy said, he had a week full of record breaking swims so no wonder he’s pooped by the last one.

There is ALWAYS about a 2-second difference between first and second 50s, due to the start. If you're out in 18.8, you CANNOT come back in 20.1 - this is just stupid. Dressel was out in 18.96 and back in 20.94, 1.98 second difference. A great swim.

He was 40.0 last year, just by judging his 50 free time and how well he had done at the meet already it wasn’t impossible

He was 40.4 the year before- a half second drop is incredible in the 100 at this level, expecting more than a full second drop is just not realistic

It won't be the same on a 50 meter pool because the flip turn push is a thrust advantage that diminishes the time with one flip instead of three its a different story.
