SHOCKING TRUTH About SAMBURU Tribe.

This video is about the Samburu people of Northern Kenya, an African tribe with a very interesting culture.
    1. Basics.
The Samburu people are a Nilotic ethnic group belonging to the larger Nilotic-speaking family. They are closely related to the Maasai, sharing linguistic and cultural ties with these group. Estimated to number around 350,000, the Samburu reside primarily in northern Kenya, specifically in the Samburu County.
    2. Origins.
The Samburu as part of a bigger Maa group are thought to have migrated from Sudan in the 16th century. The group splintered in half with the Samburu settling in Northern Kenyan and the Maasai continuing further South. Their movements down south into Northern Kenya. Their interactions with neighboring communities, such as the Rendille, have contributed to cultural and genetic exchanges, shaping who they are today.
    3. Genetics.
Many of them, despite their Nilotic roots, bear striking phenotypical similarities to the Cushites. This can be attributed to their proximity to the Rendille Cushitic group with whom they share lifestyle and even resources. Gene flow from the Samburu has created a Rendille subgroup called the Ariaal. Generally speaking though, the Samburu are about 60 percent Nilotic and 30 percent Cushitic. The rest is attributed to other neighbouring groups such as the Meru, Kikuyu, Oromo and the Turkana.
    4. Personality.
Ah, the Samburu, a delightful blend of tradition and aggression. Picture this: a conservative bunch who wouldn't touch Western civilization with a ten-foot pole, unless it's to give it a good, hearty sneer. Music, singing and dancing are important elements of these guys, and can be experienced at the annual Lake Turkana Festival in Loiyangalani, Turkana County. In short, Awesome cultured people.
    5. Language.
The Samburu dialect is closely related to the South Maasai dialects (about 77% to 89% lexical similarity). The word "Samburu" itself may derive from the Maa word saamburr for a leather bag the Samburu use. Here is a sample of this beautiful Nilotic language.
    6. Feministic village.
Did you know that within the Samburu is a community where women rule and men are banned? Founded in 1990 by a band of fierce women who decided they'd had enough of unwanted attention from local soldiers, Umoja has become a safe haven for anyone seeking refuge from the less-than-charming aspects of Samburu culture. And as for ...well, let's just say the menfolk are firmly fenced out of this estrogen paradise. The village has strict policies against men’s accommodation as no men are allowed here.
    7. Economy.
The Samburu people have historically relied on a semi-nomadic pastoralist lifestyle, revolving around cattle herding, goat and sheep rearing, and camel husbandry. These animals provide them with essential resources such as meat, milk, leather, and other materials for clothing and shelter. Some of them have dabbled in agriculture lately.
    8. Beautiful Dress
One of the most iconic cultural elements of the Samburu is their distinctive dress. Members of the moran age grade (i.e. "warriors") typically wear their hair in long braids, which they shave off when they become elders. It may be colored using red ochre. Their bodies are sometimes decorated with ochre, as well. Women wear two pieces of blue or purple cloth, one piece wrapped around the waist, the second wrapped over the chest. Women keep their hair shaved and wear numerous necklaces and bracelets.
    9. Circumcision.
Both men and women are circumcised in the Samburu tribe. Most girls are subjected to female circumcision before marriage. Girls who have not undergone female circumcision will be as part of a practice referred to as "beading", and are not allowed to have children. fgm is however illegal in Kenya and following strict legislation and sensitisation programmes in the region the prevalence of the harmful practice in Samburu is decreasing, plummeting from 86 per cent in 2014 to 75 per cent in 2024.
    10. Food.
The Samburu staple food consists of mainly milk, meat and increasingly, purchased agricultural products such as maize meal, which is used to make Ugali.
The Samburu represent the part of Africa that has weathered an erasure of identity and culture. Indeed their connection to their roots is something to admire. Thanks for watching and if this video was to your liking please press that like button. See you around.

Beautiful people and yes they are to be admired for having the strength to keep their culture and not assimilate into foreign ones.
I'm also glad they are modern on their terms and FGM is decreasing. Intelligent people.

All the nilotes pastorialists at once used to drink fresh blood from cow. We as dinka/jienge of South Sudan used to drink fresh raw blood, and we changed to cooking it before it is eaten.

Ah - I read about the "women-only village" in Kenya about a year ago, but didn't not know it was a Samburu village. Very interesting! With so much violence against women in the tribal cultures, I really admire those women for simply refusing to participate in life with men! Very informative video, I subscribed!💖

I would like to know how the men spend their time being productive when they are not singing and dancing. From what I've gathered, the women raise and care for the children, prepare meals, make jewelry, fetch water and build the homes.

The men take care of the wealth,Samburu are nomadic pastoralists and all their wealth is in cattle, if they fall sick they sell a cow to go to the hospital,if they want to take children to school they sell a cow and pay school fees, men's duty is taking care of the cattle/wealth which isn't an easy task in such an arid area, they walk for kilometers looking for pasture and water for the animals and have to defend the cattle against rival tribes who often carry out cattle raids to steal their cattle which is the only source of wealth, every young man is a warrior in this culture because they have to defend cattle by fighting and always walk around with knives on their waists, this narrative about oppressed women is dumb, in such primal living conditions division of labour for survival is done purely on strengths, men are more physically endowed thus do the dangerous jobs and women get the more safe jobs which involves the homestead, more men get killed in cattle raids, would you prefer they put women at risk of dying?

@@Joyful_Smiles I know where the question is headed, she says apart from singing and dancing like that's all they do, women also sing and dance, those are recreational activities for special occasions they don't just wake up to sing and dance everyday, of course they have daily responsibilities. The narrator clearly said their wealth is in cattle, goats and camels and even mentioned the cattle raids, did she skip that part too and just heard and saw singing and dancing?in times of drought which happens quite often because they live on arid land these men go out hundreds of kilometers away from the homestead in search of water and pasture for the animals and even go into rival hostile territory, many warriors are armed with guns not just spears they just didn't show that and many lose their lives while herding, the women are safe in the homestead and at least get to live in the huts. If you ask those women if they would rather stay at home and look after kids and perform homestead duties or go out with the livestock and risk death from wild predators and armed rival tribes coming to raid them I'm sure they prefer the homestead duties.when men go out they sleep out in the open and have to watch out for wild animals like leopards and cheetahs which are many in Samburu territory and still keep an eye open for cattle raiders from other tribes, she is already implying the women do all the work and men just sing and dance that wasn't a question she was asking.
