BEST ways to store ginger for months...Yes, months! (II)|Poonam's Kitchen

  • Ginger root is a flavorful spice widely used in Indian and other Asian cuisines. Its stay in the refrigerator is not very long, maximum 3 weeks. However, there are ways in which we can preserve ginger for months together. Yes, you got it right! Months at a stretch! Just spend a few minutes after your return from the grocery store and you will always have ready-to-use ginger for your tea, curries, soups, drinks , smoothies, cookies etc.
    This video is an extension of my previous video ‘Best way to store ginger in freezer, Part 1’. Everything shared in the previous video is still valid and true and best in its own sense.
    The present video ‘Best ways to store ginger, Part 2’ shares several new ways of handling, and storing that I learned over the last 1 year.
    One might argue, that there can only be one best way, and not ‘best ways’ as titled in the video. I would say, that all the ways shared in the video are best in their own sense. It just depends on, which way works best for whom.
    Here, I would like to mention a viewer of Poonam’s Kitchen, Ms. Veronica Noronha. She was the one who shared her style of making squares of ginger garlic paste. I tried and loved the idea, and shared it with you all. A ton of thanks to Ms. veronica Noronha for her brilliant idea!

    I just bought ginger and thinking how to store in a better way as last time I had to throw it as they were spoiled, but thankfully this time I have Poonam's Idea to keep it fresh for long and I can also use for my favourite ginger tea whenever I want. Great ideas, thanks a lot.

    What I would really like to know is how to keep ginger over winter to grow in summer. I mash up ginger in the food processor and freeze in ice cube trays. Just the right amount for tea or a meal, and saves time when preparing a meal.

      Earlier, I also used to use an ice cube tray. In recent years I found this method easier. No trays are blocked or stained. This gives me an option to customize cubes of different sizes

    will storing change the benifits of ginger???is fresh better for medicinal benifits??I remember one of my friends used to grind ginger for every meal she made.

    • @poonamskitchen
      @poonamskitchen  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sohail, fresh versus stored depends on how fresh ginger is when you are using it.
      Soft and fresh ginger if used fresh would be best.
      Fresh ginger stored right away as frozen paste will be better than old dried-up ginger sitting in the refrigerator for a few days even if ground fresh

    Mujhe ek baat aapse jaanna h haldi, salt,dhania,mircha sbji m kb daalna chaheye

    • @poonamskitchen
      @poonamskitchen  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most subziyon mei jab oil garam karein tab sab mirch masale dalein taaki ve bhun jaayein aur achchha colour dein. Heat bilkul low par rakhein jab masale daale nahi tou masale burn ho jayenge. Jin subziyon mei les hoti hai unme salt baad mei daale. Agar kisi subzi ko shallow fry karna hai tab bhi salt baad mei daale.

    No oil mixed with the paste this time like you did in the Ginger/Garlic Paste video??

    • @poonamskitchen
      @poonamskitchen  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Correct. No oil added with ginger paste, so that it can be used in cookies, smoothies, tea etc.
      Oil is added in ginger-garlic paste to prevent the sulfur compounds in garlic from reacting with other enzymes and amino acids leading to blue/green color. Oil is added more as a precaution in case of ginger-garlic, and is not required at all for ginger alone.

    Interesting. For some reason the chop at 1:22 scared me lol. Maybe you should curl your fingers when cutting?
    Whenever I store them in those bags I got a lot of condensation. I didn't wrap them around so that probably didn't help.
    I am thinking about using my sealable glass containers. Those little squares are very nice.
