We have an EOS. TSI. Kept the seals lubricated and hardly any water ingress. Not a drip in the boot. Looked after they’re great cars. Never an issue with the roof and had it 7 years now. All comes down to looking after the car, it will then look after you. Great video.
Look at the light in the middle boot as the sun eats the plastic , just press it in the middle , but be warned in my fall out , check before it kills the roof ECU and motor £ 2k to put it right .More if VW do it .
It is the same here in Denmark.. These were pretty expensive as new cars and still hold a decent value. So people has and still is, taking good care of them. I have traded 4 of them since 2010, and all of them were just like 98% new cars. ;) Cars in Denmark are much more expensive than in England, so that might be the main reason. A well maintained 2.0 TFSI is still £18k.. A diesel like the one in this video would me £7-7½K :)
Pro tip - you need to keep the roof seals lubricated with a product called Gummi Pflege and ensure all the roof drains are empty and free from debris. That way, you'll ensure your roof keeps water tight and working like new. Cheers
That had a lot of kit for a VW of that era (when the feckin steering wheel was an optional extra). hmmm, not so sure - for a start the black point needs adjusting - lots of detail missing in the shadow - 8:18, the camera is outside looking in so the white compensation is out, hence virtually no detail in the shot, and I actually think the resolution/quality/sharpness doesn't look as good either I actually prefer the one man effort, he'd got quite good at it and it was perfectly presentable and watchable - the single camera point of view was great for showing exactly was he was looking at and talking about - now it seems to be showing more of Matt talking about stuff, rather than showing the stuff he's talking about. I work at a VW dealership and EOSes(?) are notorious for leaks. Hard top convertible with a sunroof...recipe for complications. The whole functionality is a web of strings (for real part called "string kit"). Any tiny side fender bender can throw the whole convertible system off line. Got a 2.0 Diesel auto 07 plate, use the right stuff on the roof once a year & never a problem, Only time we had any water in the boot was when one of the drain pipes came off soon after we got it. The rubber surround for the roof motor is a poor design though, the lid section is waterproof, the bottom part is porous!. Best thing you can ever do is sit the rubber motor housing in a tinfoil baking tray, easy done & if you ever are unfortunate enough to get a leak, it will keep the motor protected. Would have loved this one for the Xenon's alone, stock lights are so poor in comparison.
My tip for water leaks. The seals can stick against their mating surfaces and enable leaks. The seals from the factory have a long lasting coating applied which allows the seals to slip against their mating surface but often the rubber seals and bodywork have become dusty and dry for lack of attention, they bind and do not seal well. Try partial opening of the roof and clean and apply something like Armor all protectant for vinyl and rubber to the seal and the metal body mating surface. You would be surprised how often this works. Try it on door seals to keep away water which can freeze in Winter making door opening difficult. Try it on tailgates too, especially if there is a leak, which some tailgate profiles are prone to. Remember clean dusty surfaces of the seal and mating surface first then apply protectant with a piece of sponge. It costs little and does a lot of good and may just save a leaking car.
I was thinking similar, I suspect not a lot wrong with the roof mechanism that lubricating and cleaning couldn't sort. Sadly though not so for the rest of the vehicle.
@@drnick1972 The correct lubricant for the seals is Volkswagen VW VAG Group Krytox Roof Rubber Care Oil Lubricant G052172A1 5. Its an amazing looking car in good condition, it does leak a bit….. from the pillar on the front right but it’s a great car, quite quick the only bad thing is the fuel economy, which is….. not great but still very happy with it as it is my first car!

Great car!! I bought the other french cousin, the 107 last October 2021. Great cars those citybugs. They get you everywhere and never let you really down, the only fix I had made where the rubbers that hold the exhaust wich rotted away after 12 years. Made a trip to Switzerland from Holland with just one stop in the 107! Safe and happy travels :D

Not sure whether I watch your reviews for your unique presenting manner or the vehicle that you are reviewing..lol. Keep up the great work. Look forward to watching all your uploads whether motoring or property related 😀
Sad to read so many negative stories about the EOS... I have had a 2008 2.0 TDi DSG Sport gor the last 8 yrs and it's been one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned. It's done 123,500 miles always serviced, with a high spec and a roof that has never let me down. It just sailed through its recent MOT as it has done the last few. I live in Devon so the roof is up and down all the time. It drives like it did the day I bought it... I guess I've just been lucky, or maybe I've just looked after mine
Same here. A car will only perform as well as how it’s been taken care of. It seems like the previous owner of the EOS in this video did not maintain it as well. I love my 2009 EOS and maintain it through scheduled maintenance checkups. I have 136,000 miles and it’s going strong so far. I live in the Washington DC area in the US. I was surprised to hear about the common leaks and smells mentioned as I don’t have that issue.
Hello Matt, thank you for taking the time to upload another video. Lots of clues in the boot to shown the ingress of water. I think you made the right decision. Ged
I bet the roof should be fine, it wont open if your within 1.5m of an obstacle at rear and you was right next to one. That was the beep, warning you something behind car where it needs the space to expand
What about a review of the Kia? That appeared to be good. They look good, too, but I hear they have a weak - and expensive - clutch. Keep 'em coming Matt. Always enjoyable. I've watched the Yeti about ten times now!
It will be a decent car once its sorted ,If you have the time and not scared cars are quite easy to fix, Its not like you need a Haynes manual anymore like the old days but do try to buy your parts and tools from local stores ,The advice they can give you will save skin on your knuckles
I’ve got a 2.0 Petrol Auto on a 08, just passed 50k miles with FSH, you need to look after these, the VW lubricant for the seals is over £30 for a tiny tiny bottle and you need to massage it into the rubbers at least 3 times a year, mine is bone dry and root works a treat, and 🤞she’ll run for another couple of years 😂
Years ago when they came out a friend of mines parents went to buy one new. The dealer told them to stay away as they were long time VW owners and he wanted their future business.
That's how it is with all cars. Just think of all the Corsa F as GS-Line with a manual or automatic, black roof, all that stuff.. Think of all the VW Golf GTI and Fiesta ST that get scraped everyday because I don't know Louis or some other spoiled 20 year old just likes to not spend money on cars because well, they respect the Adidas drip more or a good exaust mod.
Ultracure isn't silicone, it's a DPC cream that you inject into brickwork to stop rising damp, it wouldn't seal a roof, it's designed to leech into mortar.
In my car collection caper days I picked up one of these. When I got back to the garage the first thing the boss said was " Does the roof work" - Does he really think I was going to test it! What a muppet. my one drove really well as it happens
I had the same no resistance issue on the key Barrel of my VW Amarok.. You had to turn it all the way counterclockwise before turning it clockwise again before the ignition lit up.. Turned out it was a broken/faulty steering lock mechanism which cost about 180 Pounds at the VW Dealer to fix (ZAR3800)
Correct decision getting rid, got money pit written all over it and thats before you go underneath. Not great cars at all, will sell though as there's a bum for every seat.
Regarding wheel bearing noise, I had a "wheel bearing" noise and had all four bearings replaced. The noise was still there .... until I changed all four tyres. The tyres were only a few months old but the tread was "growing" or "contracting" in places making the tyres "knobbly". They were brand new Avon low profiles but the MOT tester picked up on them. No refund from Avon though I might add.
Think you've made the right choice there. The bits that are Golf on these aren't a problem, but anything Eos-specific was trouble. The smart money's in breaking it for spares, probably a couple of grand in parts off the wheels, lights, engine and seats, but if that's not your line of business, it's not your line of business.
There must be literally thousands of Chinese tyre makers - after years of working in the used car trade you're still coming across tyre brands you've never heard of! Nice vid as usual 👍🏻
yeah and there are even brands reproducing older michelin tires (they copy the profile). Usually with these asian brands is that the quality of the rubber is poor, they just get cracks at a year age. Also wet-weather performance is terrible :P
It's good to hear some truth about the EOS's usual problems. Owners and reviewers will usually tell us how great they are and then we have to find out the hard way. Regarding convertibles, I'm looking a getting a Cascada but not struck on the compusory electric parking brake. I'd have to convert that.
Thanks for that Matt. One of those was on the radar a few years ago to take my Daughter to Addenbrooke's Hospital 3 times a week. The only thing that put me off was the boot space (wouldn't be able to get a wheelchair in) but the spec looked great & it had more punch than the Focus CC that we went for in the end. After what you said about the EOS, the CC was probably the better move. All the best....
Ive had my 2008 eos turbo for about 5 years it's got all the upgrades including backup camera, touch screen heated seats and mirrors plus allot more. I love it! It's such a fun car to drive! My top works fine for now but does leak lol im not sure how to fix that or what all i should do to keep it working. But I've only had to replace the battery and one axle since I've had it. I have the red one with tan and black leather interior. Of course in tn i paid $5,000 for it used with 130,000 miles.
we had one in at work a few months back, roof wouldn't open, it was parked too close to the wall. yours looked to be parked a bit close it may of been the reason it didn't open
Another great video matt good luck with the sale of your other motors would be interesting see if your mate sorts the EOS out and what it cost him to do keep the videos coming matt 👍
my golf mk7 has been in the shop so I've been borrowing a mate's EOS for the past week. The one thing I can say is people who aren't "car smart" seem to really like it and I've gotten loads of compliments on the car, much more than my 4 year old golf. maybe its just because its a convertible? Also at 150,000miles it drives pretty well, and the only thing wrong with it is it sometimes crunches going into second if you rev too high in first as I've discovered lol probably the synchro or badly adjusted clutch
Love your channel... feel like aside from the automotive content it's like ASMR... every video sounds like it's narrating an audio book... very soothing haha
We had an Eos, the TSI with all the letters in red (ca 200 bhp). The rooftop broke and it took VW 4 months to fix. They finally sent specialists from Germany to our local workshop in Stockholm to fix it. The cost was the equivalent of 2K pounds. We heard that the rooftop always break because of how complicated it is. It is basically three parts that breaks up and folds one over the other. All for all, the car worked fine but the automatic gearbox wasn't smooth nor nice.
I've been an NT member for a few years, The stickers change colour every year. Don't remember an orange one recently. It could be ten years old, almost a old as the car. .
I have owned three Eos' and liked each of them. Only one had an issue and it was the known issue with the main harness to the engine. Each time I traded in an Eos it was for TT or a Boxster. All were the MK 1 non face lift versions. I still have a badgeless grill for them.
great video. Watched a few videos of yours where you always turn a profit. Didnt want to see you make a loss but it makes your videos much more real to me - that you bought a lemon. I'm too sentimental to do what you do. This car looks really cute and I'd want to fix it up but you're doing the right thing not to sink more cash into it.
A lesson, usually learned the hard way, is knowing when to don the black cap and, exactly as you said, “looking at the bigger picture”. Parts car for a specialist breaker?

Stepping up the camerawork and editing i see, very nice!
Cheers!
Hello Matt, thank you for taking the time to upload another video. Lots of clues in the boot to shown the ingress of water. I think you made the right decision. Ged
I've had my 2008 Eos for 14 years. It has over 200,000 miles and doesn't owe me a dime. I love it and wish they still made them.
A very good car for someone. Great video witty, sarcastic and punchy. Keep making them your doing a belting job, like we say up north👍👍
Thanks
I've got a 2009 2.0 TSi Sport & love the pan roof. You just have to look after them & it will keep going.
I love the cinematic B roll bits you now consistently do :) looks cool.
I bet the roof should be fine, it wont open if your within 1.5m of an obstacle at rear and you was right next to one. That was the beep, warning you something behind car where it needs the space to expand
Any mention of Leonard Rossiter and Rising Damp is always worth it...absolute classic.
ive got eos on 10 plate had 2 years 2lt diesel dsg fully loaded no issues . 140 k no issues
I've always been amazed by why anyone would want a diesel convertible. Like following a fork lift truck with the roof down.
I agree. People are cheapskates
Nice car if it had been looked after, I’ve recently been looking at Sirocco’s which I think have aged just as well.
It’s a shame
Get em before they are gone. mk 5 gti engined one and garage it.
What about a review of the Kia? That appeared to be good. They look good, too, but I hear they have a weak - and expensive - clutch. Keep 'em coming Matt. Always enjoyable. I've watched the Yeti about ten times now!
And the professional youtuber with a camera man is BACK!
😉
It bothers me when people like Roger don't look after cars. I'm glad it bothers you too. Great video - cheers.
Looks like it would have been a really nice car had it been properly taken care of. Sad to see one in this condition.
I know!
Love your videos really interesting and honest insight into the motor trade thank you 👍
Another fascinating insight Matt. Sorry it was such a lemon. Is there any chance you could do a review of that Kia Sorento you were driving please? 👍
Your happy personality just shines through. 😊
Ultracure isn't silicone, it's a DPC cream that you inject into brickwork to stop rising damp, it wouldn't seal a roof, it's designed to leech into mortar.
Aw a love the Eos! With a light exterior and interior they're absolutely lovely!
Don't know what it is but when you hold the camera during the inspection it seems more natural and better somehow.
I alternate. I prefer the quality of these and it gives me some time off too but I take your point
Same here, feel more connected somehow when its just you
1. its not xenon
2. lubricate the roof with kryrox or gummipflegestift ;)
3. use lithium fat for the panorama roof gliders :)
Everytime something went wrong on the car I just remembered watching Scotty saying the word "VW" and "Money Pit" in the same sentence
Matt another honest quality video keep up the good work always look forward when I get a notification you’ve uploaded a new video 👍
That EOS has been Rogered!! 🤣😂🤣
That EOS is a really attractive car to be honest.
Interesting fact: this was the only Golf-based VW that came with the 3.6 VR6. That would've been much nicer than the diesel imo.
we had one in at work a few months back, roof wouldn't open, it was parked too close to the wall. yours looked to be parked a bit close it may of been the reason it didn't open
Thanks
We had an Eos, the TSI with all the letters in red (ca 200 bhp). The rooftop broke and it took VW 4 months to fix. They finally sent specialists from Germany to our local workshop in Stockholm to fix it. The cost was the equivalent of 2K pounds. We heard that the rooftop always break because of how complicated it is. It is basically three parts that breaks up and folds one over the other. All for all, the car worked fine but the automatic gearbox wasn't smooth nor nice.
My mum almost bought an EOS circa 2006, this video took me back in time.
I've been an NT member for a few years, The stickers change colour every year. Don't remember an orange one recently. It could be ten years old, almost a old as the car. .
Great vid again.honest as usual.
Great work upgrading your production value and making it blend in perfect. Only halfway in I noticed you have a cameraman!
I have this era of Passat, I think it's great 👍
Nice camera quality and angles, but it’s all a bit busy and chaotic. Miss the old way you used to film these but still love the channel :)
Great videos, really like the content.
Thanks
I have owned three Eos' and liked each of them. Only one had an issue and it was the known issue with the main harness to the engine. Each time I traded in an Eos it was for TT or a Boxster. All were the MK 1 non face lift versions. I still have a badgeless grill for them.
Any chance you still have it, for sale?
@@supasmutty4243 Sadly no.
Great video Matt, but sadly the car wasn't up to it. However, you are the most positive guy I know. Keep them coming Matt your videos are spot on
great video.
Cash in your chips and off to another table. Right decision.
Another great video review!
This was valuable, I didn't know they had these sorts of problems.
Was driving Mk5 Golf GTI, and swap to the first EOS to be delivered. Love the hardtop with sunroof option🎉
VW build quality is not what it used to be but still require a premium price. Badge and image are everything!
Another great video Matt. Have a great day 😎
It’s fit for the scrapper mate, it’s too uneconomical to do up and sell!
Thanks for another great video Matt.
Just got a golf gtd today lush spec good miles for 2017 model chuffed to bits
Nice. They drive really well don’t they
@@HighPeakAutos indeed they do went with this over gte for boot space and weight
I'm really enjoying this channel. It's so interesting.
Thanks!
The roof wouldn’t operate as it was picking up the wall behind as too close for the boot to swing
Love going on TH-cam to find your newest upload. Always puts a smile on my face watching these and has done for a few years now. Prompted me to enter my first raffle the other day to win the S5 🤞🤞
Thanks for watching. Good luck
As a Passat owner, the rear tyres eventually wear on the inside edges and create a noise just like worn wheel bearings
Sorry you had to endure this thing, premium brand 😂 great post 👌
