That Passat hasn’t been looked after since day 1! I have friends overseas with mark 4 Tdi’s (1.9 Tdi) and passat’s from 1994 (old 1.6 Td engine) with over 450000 km / 280000 Miles and they’re running spot on! We’re deffo spoiled in the UK. Overseas a lot of people keep their cars for over 20 years or more but they look after them in terms of servicing , parts etc… so they go on forever! It all comes down to how people look after their cars. Anyway love the videos, keep it up 👍🏻 🙂
That owner did the right thing. Bought it new, used it accordingly to its depreciation, and sold it cheap after almost 20 years with everything worned out. There are millions of these on the road, so why make any investment in maintenance? Use it, abuse it, and when it finally quits, just move to a new car. They are disposable after 10 years. if it still runs after that time, keep the oil topped up - that's it! Don't spend money on it. Awful car anyway...
The 1.9 in particular is famous for being incredible. My dad has got two of them over 200k miles with a third that was written off at 170k in an accident.
Can just imagine the original Passat owner's ebay sales blurb 'Great runner - been told it needs around £40 spending to make good, but I haven't got the time.' etc!!
The warning that all was not as advertised, was when your "trader friend" didn't answer his phone. I wonder if he was the source of the signal interference, as per a scene in Blackadder Goes Forth.
Even though this was probably the worst spend we’ve seen Matt do, the British sarcasm is alive and so strong in this, truly hilarious! Thanks again Matt and Carry on doing what your doing

I had a 2006 Passat diesel like this and it served me really well. Bought it with 43k miles on it and took it to 167k. I maintained it as it should be maintained and it was really reliable. Drove one of those years ago. So much nicer to drive than the Mondeo TDCI I had at the time. Yours is the rustiest one I've seen. Great video as always.

@@andrewwaller5913My 1991 Clio diesel has just over 300k miles on the original engine and still runs fine. No rust and all (not very much compared to a modern car) the electrics work. It's had new injectors at 230k miles and apart from general servicing that's about it.
Corsas weren't intended to do 131K : it's been a Corsa too long. Shame about the Passat but the last owner has run it into the ground. Updates from Matt's car graveyeard are always entertaining😃
Shame the Passat couldn't be saved. Rust around the body and suspension are really the killers of these older B6 Passats. Interesting comment about French cars. My daughter's 2002 Clio was 16 years old when it was part exchanged on Renault's scrappage scheme for a new mark 4 Twingo. Not a speck of rust and still on the original exhaust system. It had just started to leak a little oil. Never let her down.
What a shed, complete with a full set of Christmas lights on the dash! Good call on the typical German build quality, enough to keep a corrosion engineer in business!

Great cars if looked after properly, shame this one wasn't! My dad had one as a company car - PE07 BZC, 2.0 TDI SE in a nice metallic dark blue. It apparently did over 182k miles and got scrapped earlier this year. He got the Passat estate bug (yes, really) and is now on his 4th!
Always loved the later B7 Passat. I especially like the key and its little dashboard slot. The most expensive looking VW key of that era. Shame they dissolve quicker than cotton candy in the rain.

Matt, a money saving tip from a subscriber. Before you scrap any cars off. If it has a good parcel shelf, keep it for the next same make and model car that's traded in, if the car is in good condition for resale that is, that has its parcel shelf missing. That seems to be the case on many of your videos. Keeping the parcel shelf, could save you buying one for £40 off ebay. Just a tip and thought from me. 👍
Matt, I'm on my 5th Touareg. The rumbling noise is undoubtedly the centre prop bearing. They now do a kit to repair it in situ, same one as they use for the same year Porsche Cayenne. It'll be cheaper than the £900 I paid for it to be repaired at the garage a few years ago.
Yes, those centre prop shaft bearings can be fixed very cheaply. A €20 one from a Ford Transit fits perfectly but I’m not sure what model Transit as its about 14 years ago since I got it done.
Had a 2009 2.0tdi highline saloon as a taxi back in the day was lovely but went thru numerous parking brake switches just couldn't cope with stopping and starting and the drivers doorcard use to crack were my arm lay against done over 150k on original clutch😊
Another great video Mat, always put a smile on my face. 😊👌🏻 That was a very basic spec Passat; manual, no heated seats, no steering wheel controls, no fog lights, cloth seats, no dual zone climate control and by the looks of it no bi-xenon lights too.
You really are at your very best with these types of videos Matt, your unfiltered disdain for both the car and its previous owners makes for very entertaining viewing - well done you! I know someone who had one of these, he took a £10k hit in depreciation over a 4 year period, it was in a similar condition to this one when it was chopped in at just 7 years old, minus the rust and a spare key…🤣😜
I have a neglected (by previous owner) 2007 Toyota Avensis 1.8 petrol. Got to her just in time and put her right. 150000 miles now and is an excellent, reliable car. No warning lights. I had one of the late 90s Passat 1.9 tdi estate. At 210,000 miles swoped her for a Peugeot 406 2.0 hdi estate, only because I fancied a change. Finally sold her (brilliant car BTW. Beautiful car) again only because I fancied a change, at just over 200,000 miles. Cars were better made. Yes, less mod cons of course, but so much stronger.
I had a 2012 Jetta TDI DSG had lots of upgrades and a 2 tone paint job. I loved that car. I lost the car when a girl 16 without a license was driving with 3 teen boys in the car crashed into us at 11PM at night and totaled the car. We flipped over 1 and a half times and skidded down the road 20 yards on the roof. Still angry 3 years later! It only had 48K miles. The car was perfect until it was not. I had just ceramic coated the day before.
@@ln5747 Yes. I have been doing the ceramic coat for years on cars (small professional bottles) . I also use the cheap stuff like Meguiars Hybrid ceramic in the blue bottle for $12 on everything from the bathroom shower tiles to the lawn mower because its makes things so easy to clean and it lasts a couple months. Its like discovering Rain-X for the first time LOL
I owned an R36 for 5 years...and it was a truly magnificent vehicle. One of my favourite cars I've owned. It's funny how little styling changes can keep a car looking mordern; i.e. the R36...but this standard Passat you're driving is hideous!
I'm always for saving cars no matter what, but damn. Every single body pannel is rotten, parking brake doesn't work, it needs tires, brakes, cambelt, EGR, AC fix, floor matts, wipers, suspension is shot, oil is leaking... there's no service history and it's done 140k miles.
Had a 1.9 tdi pre-facelift oe of these yonks ago. Bought with 160,000 miles on and seemed really solid... Sure enough needed a new head gasket soon after which I kicked myself for doing initially as it felt like throwing good money after bad, but then the old girl just kept going and going. Ended up with 240,000 miles on and only scrappped due to rust setting it. Had ao many adventures in thst car.
my parents used to have a b6 passat estate in the same spec as this one. it had rust under the rear boot handle and on the passenger front and rear wings. was a good car though, but needed a lot of work doing on it including injector replacement. got rid of it due to a burning smell that was coming thru the vents and was told by mechanic it needed a new turbo or engine (cant' remember which).
Matt, your videos are a treat to watch. For a change I didn't skip the car vertical part completely this time, just stayed back a few seconds to watch whether you still keep saying the whole thing about it. You did, and I fell off my chair literally 😂 .. knowing a bit of your nature through these videos, must be kicking yourself silwntly doing this stuff in every video 😅
Couldn't stop laughing each time you tried the 'paper shredder'. 😂 Also, nearly spat my coffee out when you said the air con is only spreading the dog hairs everywhere. Bahahaha. Too funny. What a shed.
Neighbours got one exactly like this, but a 2008, it’s had two turbos in the 2/3 years he’s owned it, various other problems too. It’s got rusty arches like this one too, oh and it sounds like a tractor. Wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole myself 😂 My 2005 120k Toyota Avensis doesn’t have any body work rust, all solid
I had. 52 plate Corsa sxi 1.7DTi (cast iron block)ran it to 100k from new very reliable maybe I was just lucky but need a lot of work when reached this milage (starter motor ,clutch, exhaust )
These B6 passats are a significant step back relative to the B5/5.5 regarding reliability and durability. I rarely see B6s over 200k (not saying its not possible) whereas its easy to find B5s with over 200k
@Billychampneys7 they can make 200k and more, however, not as consistently nor as easily as the previous generation. I've had both, and the 2 B5.5 i had were far better than the B6. Also, the pd130 is more frugal and has a more fun power delivery than the 2l diesels
One of these were my option over my XV30 Camry, but all of them here are 2 liter turbo with the DSG, so obviously massive bills attached regardless of the condition. Some of then have an 6spd Aisin, but the E888 with 15 years of abuse pulled me off completely.
I'd buy this as a pal of mine has one with a blown engine that he is going to scrap which has mint panels and good alloys and tyres with leather interior which I could get of him for around 200 pound well worth putting the time into just to run around as a cheap car
Just brilliant how you drove the Passat straight into the back of the Corsa 😂 I do like these videos that you do and it shows that some makes aren't all they are made out to be. If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen.
I love this type of vid from you Matt, your humour wins through every time. Very Top Gear driving the Passat into the corsa…. Go faster next time…. You’ll enjoy it!!!
The fact that I have a corsa myself and it's 1 year younger than the one being scrapped frightens me. I've had it since December and to be fair I haven't really had any problems with it. Knock on wood.
Interesting to hear about the diesel VAG foam wheelarch thing. My diesel A4 has rusty front wheel arches, unfortunately it's still bloody noisy from outside 😂
Had a Passat for 12 years a great car. At 8 yrs old VW replaced all 4 wheel arches for free think it must have been a recall or something but thats the service from a main dealer.
Matt is a brilliant guys and love these videos. But takes so many gambles without even seeing it. That's what makes this fun as we don't know what it's like
I had one of those generation Passats. It was a Highline version 2010, leather seats etc. DMF went at 230k miles not worth doing at that mileage.and got £600 against a 2012 Passat. They’re tough cars that go on, if they are looked after and serviced properly..Ian
I had that exact same car and silver on a 60 plate 2.0D full leather too .. with 122k on the clock ..ran it for 12 months didn't spend a penny on it bar a engine service sold it for £3,200 ..£500 less than I bought it for that was exactly 9 years ago !! ..cars were cheap second hand back then I guess
My 2006/56 Saloon 140 tdi on 219K is worse in some ways and better in others. Needs 2x front wings, grill, bonnet, front suspension rebuild. Front brake rebuild Alternator clutch pulley Aux belt tensioner Only 1 glow plug works now Due a timing belt and water pump. Drivers door electric window needs attention Drivers door crash sensor Rear sub frame Rear suspension overhaul Rear brake overhaul. Air con doesn't work Everything else that's left works though, and she gave me over 100k of mostly trouble free motoring (bar a boost hose blowing off) but MOT is out on Nov 8th... R.I.P.
Excellant channel well presented and very interesting but please remember even the best-made cars are only as good as their service routines, if they haven't been maintained properly then they are bound to disappoint and should not necessarily be a reflection of their manufacture.
You could sell the parcel shelf off the Passat to earn a few quid back for yourself love your videos wish I had a successful car business as you do but unfortunately I am just a van driver keep up the great work
Got an 07 plate B6. Zero wheel arch rust, no warning lights, near FSH, no leaks, brakes and clutch all fine. 2 timing belts done. Air con ice cold. Yes mine is also a work horse, but gets cleaned inside and out, including hovering and fluid checks every week. So if looked after, they don`t all turn out like this.
My old one ...handbrake was awful sometime worked sometimes didn't...ignition key insert was BAD...before is old it you had to insert the key about 5 million times to sort the thing 😅😂😂
You say they're "Just not made to last" but the fact is that both of those cars would be absolutely fine if their previous owners had simply had them serviced, washed them now and again and done any repairs as needed.
Eeh, these had a lot of issues already when couple of years old. Oil pump failing because of design flaw, injectors failing, DSG box that doesn't last. Rust that eats away every part (front struts, half frames or whatever they are called). They looked fancy back in the day though.
Whats the prop driving Keith? I'm not saying it's beyond the realms that it was retro fitted and connected to a trailer mounted chipper at some point judging by the state of the rest of it mind 😂
can't help but compare this 17 year old car with my 17 year old car. Mine has almost TWICE the milage , no rust whatsoever, no warning lights and everything ( except the aircon ) is still in perfect working condition. It doesnt use any oil whatsoever and in 10 years I have not needed to top the radiator up once. My family are forever taking the mick out of it because I have kept it so long but whilst it still passes its MOTs and does 50 + to the gallon I will not be getting rid any time soon. What car do I have ?? Jeremy Clarkesons favourite !! A Vauxhall VECTRA .
That Passat is a strong advertisement on how any car, if it's not looked after, will be junk way before it's time. We've seen so many unreliable cars that have been cared for turn a good profit, and supposedly reliable cars that have never been washed never mind serviced go to the scrappers.
I had one from 2006 to 2017 it was a nice car, but reliability was very poor. Electronic handbrake seized on many occasions, oil pump failure, fuel pump failure. Electronic issues with sunroof. I have a golf now and it's very reliable, maybe VW have cleaned up their act since
I love how quickly you get a quote from the junkyard... they trust you not to scavenge on the cars before they can. One thing less to worry about, as ole Forrest would say...

Had a 2009 2.0tdi highline saloon as a taxi back in the day was lovely but went thru numerous parking brake switches just couldn't cope with stopping and starting and the drivers doorcard use to crack were my arm lay against done over 150k on original clutch😊
I think he's tucked you up a bit there. But that said its a lot of metal for the money. Its iust that metal has lots of holes in it
We know it's a bad car when you don't valet it first. Best it's goes to car heaven with the Corsa. Love a cheap car video
Another great video Mat, always put a smile on my face. 😊👌🏻 That was a very basic spec Passat; manual, no heated seats, no steering wheel controls, no fog lights, cloth seats, no dual zone climate control and by the looks of it no bi-xenon lights too.
@@Smithy1789 that’s right. Very basic. Thanks for watching
Look on the bright side, strip the interior, and it would make a robust garden shed.
Still, good News about the chocolate oranges, although they've probably got superficial damage too.
We had a Tdi with dsg and leather sport trim. Put Michelin cross climate all round and it was brilliant for years
I had a 2012 Jetta TDI DSG had lots of upgrades and a 2 tone paint job.
@@gags730 did the ceramic coating work?
@@ln5747 Yes. I have been doing the ceramic coat for years on cars (small professional bottles) . I also use the cheap stuff like Meguiars Hybrid ceramic in the blue bottle for $12 on everything from the bathroom shower tiles to the lawn mower because its makes things so easy to clean and it lasts a couple months. Its like discovering Rain-X for the first time LOL
@@gags730 I’ve had many many cars and that td with dsg is a great combo. Sorry to hear that but, look forward not back as they say
I owned an R36 for 5 years...and it was a truly magnificent vehicle. One of my favourite cars I've owned. It's funny how little styling changes can keep a car looking mordern; i.e. the R36...but this standard Passat you're driving is hideous!
Had a 2005 Touareg and they are prone to the driveshaft carrier bearing giving trouble but I have to say, I loved it.
I have this passat right here in Nigeria and it's my daily driver. Love it
15:30 Matts spray tan here looking good!
I haven’t had a spray tan. I was in Spain last week
This one and the last model had the ECU under the passenger side footwell. Check for water damage!
Yep, had one & spent a few £ having the wires re soldered etc & fault finding....was in the rare (for a passat) futura yellow colour
Couldn't stop laughing each time you tried the 'paper shredder'. 😂 Also, nearly spat my coffee out when you said the air con is only spreading the dog hairs everywhere. Bahahaha. Too funny. What a shed.
"It pulls well". 😂 Yeah. Unlike whichever poor sod drives it.
Oh Matt, What a heap!, and £1000 to fix all the mechanical issues, very optimistic😂, Can't win them all., Great video as always, keep them coming.
love these videos mat! ive watched several hundred of these and im still not bored. you are a very good presenter!
Driver window sound *Paper jam in a fax machine
Neighbours got one exactly like this, but a 2008, it’s had two turbos in the 2/3 years he’s owned it, various other problems too. It’s got rusty arches like this one too, oh and it sounds like a tractor. Wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole myself 😂
My 2005 120k Toyota Avensis doesn’t have any body work rust, all solid
My current b6 Passat is on 216k and climbing! Good cars if well looked after so not unheard of
@Billychampneys7 they can make 200k and more, however, not as consistently nor as easily as the previous generation. I've had both, and the 2 B5.5 i had were far better than the B6. Also, the pd130 is more frugal and has a more fun power delivery than the 2l diesels
Good to see you future videos buying vans
Would have been a nice car, shame it hasn't been looked after recently. The fact the car runs is a miracle and shows a good engine that VW engine was
One of these were my option over my XV30 Camry, but all of them here are 2 liter turbo with the DSG, so obviously massive bills attached regardless of the condition.
Just brilliant how you drove the Passat straight into the back of the Corsa 😂
I do like these videos that you do and it shows that some makes aren't all they are made out to be. If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen.
Sorry, if the call cut out whilst he was describing it, and you havent had any more info...where did you get the keys from.
I love this type of vid from you Matt, your humour wins through every time.
Very Top Gear driving the Passat into the corsa…. Go faster next time…. You’ll enjoy it!!!
Good news about the cup holders - shame there’s no walnut gear knob though.
The fact that I have a corsa myself and it's 1 year younger than the one being scrapped frightens me. I've had it since December and to be fair I haven't really had any problems with it. Knock on wood.
He says they’re not made to last, and are disposable.
Interesting to hear about the diesel VAG foam wheelarch thing. My diesel A4 has rusty front wheel arches, unfortunately it's still bloody noisy from outside 😂
Once they sorted that the sills started going on polos
@@philtowle4683yep😂my 09 Polo has a fair bit of rust on the driver's side sill and on the driver's wing
Had a Passat for 12 years a great car. At 8 yrs old VW replaced all 4 wheel arches for free think it must have been a recall or something but thats the service from a main dealer.
A fresh set of plates will be enough! 😂
Matt is a brilliant guys and love these videos. But takes so many gambles without even seeing it. That's what makes this fun as we don't know what it's like
The driveshaft is a known Touareg issue and it's a nightmare to replace. Put me off buying one.a decade or so ago.
The rot has set in with this one Matt..... it's probably even more scary underneath.
At least the turbo was happy Matt, whistling 😚 along on it's happy way!
Matt, your geekdar let you down, both versions of the CC had the manual in the glovebox same as that B6.
My 2006/56 Saloon 140 tdi on 219K is worse in some ways and better in others.
Needs 2x front wings, grill, bonnet, front suspension rebuild.
Front brake rebuild
Alternator clutch pulley
Aux belt tensioner
Only 1 glow plug works now
Due a timing belt and water pump.
Drivers door electric window needs attention
Drivers door crash sensor
Rear sub frame
Rear suspension overhaul
Rear brake overhaul.
Air con doesn't work
Everything else that's left works though, and she gave me over 100k of mostly trouble free motoring (bar a boost hose blowing off) but MOT is out on Nov 8th... R.I.P.
You hit the nail on the head matt, the poor car has just never been loved. They must be properly maintained! If not they end up being scrapped @130k?
Excellant channel well presented and very interesting but please remember even the best-made cars are only as good as their service routines, if they haven't been maintained properly then they are bound to disappoint and should not necessarily be a reflection of their manufacture.
You could sell the parcel shelf off the Passat to earn a few quid back for yourself love your videos wish I had a successful car business as you do but unfortunately I am just a van driver keep up the great work
At least the front bumper on the Passat and the rear bumper on the Corsa are solid. 😉
I have a 2016 2L diesel passat. 85k miles and still feels and looks new.
Matt....you got a whole load of cars to start a new hobby.....Banger racing 🏁 😂😂😂😂😂
That rumbling is probably centre prop shaft coupling
Spot on about the roadworks increasing during the school holidays
That Passat is a strong advertisement on how any car, if it's not looked after, will be junk way before it's time. We've seen so many unreliable cars that have been cared for turn a good profit, and supposedly reliable cars that have never been washed never mind serviced go to the scrappers.
I had one from 2006 to 2017 it was a nice car, but reliability was very poor. Electronic handbrake seized on many occasions, oil pump failure, fuel pump failure. Electronic issues with sunroof. I have a golf now and it's very reliable, maybe VW have cleaned up their act since
what year and engine golf do u have now?
I love how quickly you get a quote from the junkyard... they trust you not to scavenge on the cars before they can.
One thing less to worry about, as ole Forrest would say...
You could hold a disco in that car. there's that many flashing lights. Or sell it to a Lady of the night. All those red lights.
