That action is intuitive by also being prepared. Knowing that most likely there will be a pass or a cut back door is important but if you have a great playmaker with the ball that makes it more challenging to guess correctly.

I agree that great players are not usually good coaches, however, what players should take away from what TA is teaching is how 'great defense' is an illusion of presenting a presence in order to control the offense as best as possible, showing help and then recovering. Being a mobile and vocal presence for your teammates and opponents.
IMO, when all 5 guys are doing this, then it's a thing of beauty.

This made me like Tony Allen even more haha but he right the biggest point i feel from this is to stop dribble penetration from the ball handler and make him make a pass and you are still in position because u can see tony already is moving back towards his man while the ball is in the air and he is ready to either contest the shot or be ready for that dribble drive from his man. All time defense awards yuh hurrrd

A lot of it is just instincts & reaction time. You can teach offense, but you can’t teach defense. You’re either gifted or you’re not. Still, this is good to watch if you’re trying to sharpen up some.

I would love to see my Knicks pay this man to train our youngster's how to play real defense for 48 minutes. Front offices should hire these types of rough riders to help train and develop their player's. I'm not going to mention MJ, cause he is the GOAT. But I would hire Gary Payton, Tony Allen, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ben Wallace to train the players that are playing the position that they played. Obviously you would have to get certain types of players, but I think it would be awesome to have these guys on any developmental staff in the league.

Mr. Allen we respect you and your defensive prowess when you were still active. Unfortunately this stupid NBA league has become a lame and boring league to watch. It's hard to play defense when contesting shots but what us and the younger generation of hoopers can absorb from you is your ability to position yourself properly, anticipate, and intercept. It's hard to BLOCK shots in the NBA these days and stealing/intercepting the ball is the only viable and rewarding option due to the rule changes. They want the league to become a ALL-STAR setting every darn official game w/c is bullcrap favoring heavily the SHOOTERS.
