I recently found out about this channel and im really enjoying it. I'm one of those people who gets excited about defense. You're right defense needs a revolution
From reading some interviews given by Tony Allen, he really does seem to study up on certain player's tendencies and also recognizes the opposition's go-to plays; hence how he is able to predict so well. But there are also times that I feel he either expends way more energy than necessary (such as when he finds himself behind plays), or gambles a bit much, like going under screens against shooters. His wildness is fun to watch, but sometimes you can see the diminishing returns.
I beg to disagree. The more energy he expends on defense, the more energy the opposing offensive player expends as well. Why do you think Kobe and KD said he was the best defender they played against?
Coach Mike awesome video. By the way one hidden technique very good defenders have is good conditioning. It takes a lot of hustle to be a good defender and if you don't have the conditioning you will not be able to offer a lot of pressure no matter how bad you want to. Basically laziness is a staple of bad defenders
Hey coach. I love this channel. I try to watch one before every game (think I've seen them all now). Would you ever consider doing one on an international player? Because Australia would love one on Damien Martin! Keep up the good work!
Great Vid. I noticed that most of the plays highlighted in this video (and many of the others you have for that matter) Allen is making a play with his left hand. Allen is right handed. Is this just coincidence or are they strategically doing this when defending right handed players?
you covered what to do when the dribbler does an outside-hand layup: jump behind them towards their outside shoulder and block with your inside hand. so what do you do then if the dribbler you're guarding decides to go for the inside hand layup instead of the outside hand layup? just go straight up?
Good move by the offensive player to recognize you're on the outside and go up with the inside hand. Hopefully your help defense will be able to alter the shot in that case. But if you know your opponent does that in advance, then just stay in between the basket
wanted to asked a question about stances, upward or waist bent but i see its been asked for obv reasons. someone might think this vid is a prob given all the times youve said "bend at the waist so you can poke for steals, dont be to rigid and upright" but im assuming yr not contradicting yrself cos yr saying if stances for diff situations?
Yes, there are definitely different opportunities for both. Bending at the waist allows you to put a lot of pressure on the ball, as well as go for steals. Upward stance doesn't' give you the same opportunity to go for a steal, but makes staying in front easier. Really depends on your condition/agility compared to your opponent. I have clips of Tony Allen bending at the waist, getting into a lockdown stance, but most of the time he doesn't. So I just wanted to accurately represent him.
onemogain23 low stance is better because you can basically smother your defender and reach to the ball farther. If you stand up I guess you can stop a high pass but I'll chose low stance because it has more positives than high one

yeah I'm mostly focusing on staying in front of my man at all times because my stance is more upright and it's hard as hell to defend the 3 and the drive man to man, I haven't used the lower stance yet, but I think it'll be easier for me to stick defense on the 3 and on the drive.
onemogain23 if you have longer arms and are conditioned well, standing is the way because you can reach and stay in front. It shorter and have small arms and I go down and be ferocious. The one thing you got to have is passion to try on defense. Not enough people do
I’m all for Tony Allen and this video but it seems a bit misleading. To me a lockdown defender (which I agree Tony Allen is) is a player who can keep their man in front of them for the whole duration of the shot clock. What he does in this video is exceptional, but I don’t feel like it’s lockdown defense, it’s to me great timing and anticipation.
I liked your other videos in this series but I don't agree about TA. Awards mean jack in today's NBA. While I agree mostly regarding his on the ball def., his off the ball def. is not that good. At this point, he's overrated on def.
Best defender at the guard position since the Glove. His 2014 playoff performance against Durant every game is a perfect example
Idk man jrue holiday is tough
@@ajjunior1278 lu dort is elite as well
@@ajjunior1278 dont get me wrong tho jrue is also an elite defender
@@ajjunior1278 this was way before now of course first, and second tony is still better
Jesus Loves you and wants you to accept him as your Lord and saviour

Underrated defender
I've always wanted this video to be made right after I saw your channel.
Thank you! Been waiting for a defensive breakdown video of Tony Allen for a few months now, glad you made one :)
Thanks for showing the wrap around steal.
Tony Allen still the best defender in the league
True Setback 2nd best under Kawhi
Bobby Anthony and draymond

I love all of your lockdown breakdowns! Can you do Ben Wallace and John stockton, please?
Agreed
I liked that one with the screens, I would follow him on that one! Nice observation, coach!
Hey Coach could we have a video on full court defence in certain situations? Like 1 on 1, 2 on 1. Thanks! Keep up the good work!

Great to hear! Keep up the hard work, keep locking down. You got it
Coach Mike with ur advices!People will recognize what I'm all about on D for sure!
could you PLEASE do a James Posey one 😀
cos what he did to Kobe in Game 6 2008 was sick - crowding his jumper ect.
What about MKG from the Hornets? He's probably the best defender on their roster. No one really covers them so I always have to ask :( lol
great work bro

0:13 "TO PLAY *DEFESNE*...? C'mon Coach Mike. :D :D :D Great content as always.
What's better defensive stance? The stance of patrick beverly or tony allen?
0:12 What is "defesne"?

Coach Mike yeah i guess its all about situation. might be a good thing to do a vid on. cheers mate grt job
How about metta world peace please
Marcus smart does this
Defensive goat
It’s very funny considering that when you are little your taught to sit down on defense but in his case he’s standing up so he can have more momentum
All-NBA underrated defenders:
Holiday
T. Allen
T. Prince
AK-47
Kareem
If you know, you know...
leaonard is excellent at stealing the ball off rebounds. the best at it
So what's better? an upward stance or a low stance like everyone else? I just want to make my man goes nowhere!
onemogain23 low stance is better because you can basically smother your defender and reach to the ball farther. If you stand up I guess you can stop a high pass but I'll chose low stance because it has more positives than high one

Also team defense would be cool to like the '08 Celtics...you can tell I'm a Celtics fan lol
your videos are amazing btw
If lebron had him to take away Durant or klay of curry it will lights out

Yes, but I believe these skills are what makes a lockdown defender
Draymond Green because his defensive IQs is crazy
wade richardson kung fu iq
wade richardson he mastered the art of taijutsu
do Dennis Rodman next
It saI'd learn how to plAy Defesne at the beginning
Damn
1:27...DAMN, WTF??

Memphis need to do whatever they can to resign this dude! T.A. is a str8 junk yard dog, I do believe he will be a hall of famer
do you know how much energy this dude waste bro on defense
Yo Boi Gene not energy wasted when he’s causing tough shots, getting steals, and slowing down the ball
Kobe stopper
