For everyone complaining abt how Byredo fragrances don’t last, that they are skin scents etc: They target the Asian market where people don’t want to stand out or offend others with their fragrance, just want to smell nice and clean. Hence the minimalistic scents. Byredo, Jo Malone, Diptyque and some cologne brands are all popular brands in Korea, Japan for the very reason.
But at the same time this country love chanel perfume which are very strong and stand out like coco, number 5. They don't care how strong they are because it's CHANEL.
As an Asian I partly agree to your statement, in Asia we don’t use perfume that much nor do our mothers / fathers used perfume in their early age. So so so many people are very sensitive to strong scents they will snizze and complain “who are wearing perfume?” That makes airy / light / subtle scents very common in Asia such as JML (I personally don’t really like JML) but these years people started to looking for strong scents eg: amouage / Kilian / Guerlain / Chanel I think it just takes time for public to accept stronger scents
I love, love, love Bal d'Afrique and have been wearing it about a year now. I was made aware of this fragrance last year when a very elegant, wealthy & sophisticated Russian client came to our office and her scent filled our conference room and down the hall. I just felt compelled to request the name of what she was wearing. So beautiful, just like her! She couldn't recall, at that moment, and promised she would email me the name when she returned home. I was thrilled to gain the secret to her lovely aura! I sought it out on the internet and had to buy it. Most perfumes I think I might like, end up either giving me a headache or making me nauseous after a short period of wearing time. I now feel so much more informed, after being quarantined and spending considerable time on youtube, learning about all the "notes", longevity, projection and sillage, etc. I didn't know what I loved so much about Bal d'Afrique, just that I couldn't get enough of it! My only disappointment is that I find it fades too quickly on me, in spite of spraying it in about 7 areas on my person. Most fragrances I enjoy, don't quite have the staying power, so I have to consume more -bit expensive. I am on the look out to try something new to add to my relatively small collection, but I may consider a blind buy this time, curious to see if I can discern what I will like from various youtube commentaries and critiques. It's been fun. Thank you for your interesting and affirming review.
Wow, thank you for sharing your story! I can understand why you were drawn to that woman - it is an unusual scent. I hope you find some other beauties out there - there's a whole world waiting to be explored. 🌹Xo Sam
Bal D’Afrique is the only Byredo I own. Bought it along with the Maison Dior Ambre oil which not only helps the longevity, but the combo is diviiiiine 😍
Shanice Yes, all from Maison Dior. I’ve only had the opportunity to smell the Ambre and Rose (there is also Musk and Oud), but I imagine at least one would enhance Mojave Ghost as well (perhaps Ambre or Musk based on the notes and what you like?). I was able to play and see what I liked at my local Saks store, since you never really know until you try it out. I do adore layering though - it’s like being a fragrant chemist! 😁💐
Smells just like Vetiver Tonka on my skin although very similar, my girl friend prefers Vetiver Tonka for its elegance, while Bal D'Afrique, a bit on the playful side according to her, but there is a sense of elegance to Hermes Vetiver Tonka. Great video!
I just stumbled on your channel, I must say you are exquisite. Very well spoken. I appreciate your research and giving us some information about the brand. Great job.
I love Byredo and Bal d’Afrique is my absolute favorite. I’ve visited the flagship in Stockholm and it was a great experience. I loved your review. Thanks and stay safe 😉
You said it all about the image and style of the brand. I get that concept too and lo it. Bal d’Afrique is awesome. My favorite although I have a few bottles from the brand. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the comparison with Hermes VT. You answered all my questions! I'm still a little on the fence about a full bottle of it due to price, so I'll be sure to revisit the Byredo. Thanks, hun 🙏🏻🌹
It smells like a high end version of Axe - Africa. One of his teammates probably sprayed it in the locker room after playing basketball and the scent memory inspired him. Ben Gorham will never admit this of course 😄
Dior Privee line released in 2004 was one of those simplistic projects I assume. Byredo hit the bell with the design too. The fragrance itself is super pleasant, citrusy, clean, calming, warm, happy.
I really enjoy this one but Bullion is still my favourite from the brand but it rarely gets spoken about. Great to get your thoughts on this one :) Rocking opus X by Amouage today.
Oh I so want to like Bal d'Afrique because of the name and the simple bottle but when I take a whiff, I can't get far enough away from it. I think its the vetiver that's too much and headache inducing for me. Thanks to your description, I'm more able to zero in on what's agreeable and not with me and fragrance notes.
I smelled this at Galeries Lafayette in Paris in 2017 and loved it at the counter so I bought it. Once home in California, it's too strong for me. I love vetiver for men ( first love wore Guerlain's Vetiver and I still find it intoxicating) but the blend with other notes is a little too much. It's interesting but I wouldn't purchase it again . Great review.
Has someone else noticed that the prices for the perfumes have risen extremely in the last few years. For my first 100ml bottle of Pulp I paid 140 € for my second perfume from the company 150 € and now in 2020 100ml cost 185 €!
I don’t quite remember the EDP but I used to own the shower gel (an emotional purchase). I wonder what vetiver note they use? The liquid is transparent and vetiver oil has a dark brown colour. Did not realize the Hermes EDT was more expensive then the Byredo. Good to know!
Guilty 👋👌. I recently joined the Bal D'Afrique family only last week. A beautiful sunny fragrance, buttery peppery and mango-ie (not a word I know). I just wish the performance was better 🤷♀️
I haven’t tried this one, or really any Byredos. But do you know what I did? About 4 weeks ago I blind bought a Bewitching Yasmine by Penhaligons and that was before my moratorium on doing so, anyway I don’t like it! It’s weird sweet incense to me, but certainly too sweet. I was wondering if you’d talk about some of the portrait series that you like.. I know you have some bc your sister said you did..
Thank you for your review! I love the fragrance, it is quite subtle, I would love to hear your thoughts on more of their line, including their night veils perfume (casablanca lily and reine de nuit) :)
Is subtle another way of saying “skin scent” that no one can smell on you unless their face is on your skin? Getting tired of these perfume houses trying to make people now think fragrances are supposed to be skin scents when in reality they have no choice but to make subpar fragrance now that the IFRA has banned the ingredients that give fragrances their lasting power and projectivity

Well described the image of the brand. I havent fallen for any Byredos yet but of them all I liked Velvet Haze best 💜☮️💟 lately I am curious about coffee and violet though not together (or maybe together 🤨) so if you have any frags in that vein I’d love reviews! I've recently found your channel and have been binge watching all your content 😬🧡 I have a question about perfume oils vs fragrance... how do they compare? Because I know Byredo also sells Bal d'Afrique in oil format. It's a format that appeals to me a lot but I don't know how it compares in terms of sillage, longevity, etc....
Thank you so much! Well it depends from brand to brand. I don't own any Byredo oils, but in general oils are more long lasting on the skin (and also better for the skin). Sillage may be compromised though due to not being able to over-apply on clothing the same way you would a spray. But I do own oils where the sillage is great and this doesn't matter (Maison Louis Marie). I also did a video on water-based perfumes where I talk about the different perfume types. Hope this helps in some way. 🌹Xo Sam
I don't think it's Haitian vetiver as that hasn't been specified. Whereas other ingredients do have the country of origin... so I'm leaning towards no.🌹Xo Sam

I'm a little late to the party- but I wanted to thank you for reviewing this. I love how you dressed in a flapper style dress to match the scent story! You look stunning with blonde hair with your skin tone, too! I just got this perfume today and its beautiful and so soft on the dry down. Love it.
Hmmm ive only tested this one from this house actually. But first impression is..none :( too bland, too light, and since im living in a hot tropical country, after spraying about an hour, i go outdoor and smell nothing left :(. The first notes is good actually, but only last in first 15 mins on my skin. Very quick decision to not waste my $$ on full bottle. Thanks for your content again Sam 👍🏻👍🏻
Bal d'afrique is gorgeous and definitely signature scent worthy THE only problem is the lasting power on me is so bad 😭😭😭 1 hour max 😭 definitely not for me esp not for that pricetag???
Camelia Mihaila i did end up purchasing it as well as BAL D’AFRIQUE. I picked up a small roll on of Gypsy Water as well. Out of the three I think Gypsy Water is better suited for my skin. I was able to also get my nose on 1996 and after the dry down it’s amazing to me. I don’t have that yet.
i did not like this fragrance at first, the dry off is what I love- i sort of want to love Biblioteque, and I have Pulp, it is ok on me, I did not want to want Bal d'afrique because everyone else does, but I did, and I would say it is the lemon that makes a dif for me
I bought a sample from Microperfumes, which seems a reputable seller. I could not smell it, besides a faint soap smell at the first; Very faint. I tried it for three days and could get nothing from it after about 5 minutes of the faint soap. Never had an experience like that before - very disappointing.

Nose Knows No Notes it might be a body chemistry difference, it projects at least a few hours on me and more than two sprays can be too much potency depending on the weather. My first ever niche, I resisted for a long time due to price but it was worth it.
@@baboolgh5519 Ah if you mean from Byredo, then Blanche is one of their more powdery scents. But in general I don't go to Byredo for powdery. There's also Khôl de Bahrain by Stephane Humbert Lucas that is lovely and powdery. 🌹Xo Sam
I just bought Bal D'Afrique last night, sprayed it on my forearm at around 7.30pm. Right now it's 7 am and I can still smell it. Skin scent sure, but seems like it's the type that can last the whole day or night. Have to test it several more times to determine if it projects.
I blind bought it because of all the hype. It’s nice, nothing great. It’s like all the other Byredo frags. A weak barely detectable skin scent. I can barely smell it on me. I wouldn’t repurchase. I’ve tried about 8 frags from this house and of them behave like edt. And for that reason I think it’s overpriced. The price range on these should be under $100. They are in no way no how worth the price they ask. And I’m not stupid enough to ever pay retail for any frag. I got mine for under $100. Still paid too much. It’s half hour later now and I can’t smell it anymore. I’m so done with Byredo. I don’t care what famous person has it on their vanity. That means absolutely nothing to me
Hi Elisabeth, thank you for sharing. For those reasons you mentioned, I do not own any Byredos myself. I borrowed this Bal d'Afrique from a friend as I wanted to give it a proper chance. Alas, they are pleasant enough, not groundbreaking, but it depends on what you're looking for in a fragrance. In the beginning of my fragrance journey, I would have been very happy to have one. 🌹Xo Sam

Bal D’Afrique is the only Byredo I own. Bought it along with the Maison Dior Ambre oil which not only helps the longevity, but the combo is diviiiiine 😍

🌹Xo Sam
I feel like im the only one that doesnt like Balda. I had it and I sold it. I love unamed.
Well, Bal d'Afrique isn't the most groundbreaking fragrance, so I understand. I love unnamed too! That one took me by surprise. 🌹Xo Sam
