Nice review! I used these three times two years ago and they were amazing! Being a bit of a tinkerer and not leaving well enough alone, I made a modification after thinking they were a bit tough to open. I opened them, looked at the retention method and thought “hmmmm”. I sanded the bottom of the blades with 1000 grit paper, then 1500 and finally 3000. They opened fantastic and had zero damage on the three deer.
They’ve done a great job with those. Heard of some people getting them only the blades were not that sharp. They’re not very difficult to re-sharpen, but when you order them, you may want to ask if there’s anything they can do to make sure you get the sharpest ones. And remember you can use my discount code to save an extra bit.
Thank you, Dan. That’s really kind of you to say. It’s hard to find the balance of being really comprehensive, but not too wordy. I still get a number of people complaining that the videos are too long or too short. I know I can’t please everyone but when I hear words like yours, it makes me smile.
Great accuracy, great sharpness, but after seeing confirmation of the blades not functioning properly…I don’t know why anyone would trust these heads. I work too hard for opportunities at deer to launch a question mark at a deer.
I lost two deer with these, pass through shots. Went back to fixed blade and never had a problem again. I don't think they opened on the deer, ruined my mindset on mechanicals. Great test, thanks John!
Probably one of the better rage heads. Penetration and durability on these heads aren’t the best but like you stated, the blades are so close to the point. I’ve shot these heads and it’s been crazy blood trails. Used the same broad head on 3 deers. Just sharpened the blades and the retention mechanism still worked. Not a bad broadhead overall
Thanks for the review. Rage sent 2 packs of the NC to replace the red collar version that didn’t open at 400 fps. I figured I’d try them this year. The chisel tips are super dull. I figure they might push the hide in a ways before poking a hole and cause a bigger entry hole….hopefully. I was pleased to find out they hit in the same POA as my Nap TI 2 bladers. Tried the Nap last year. They worked ok but not like I expected them to like the old Rocky Mountain gators from yesteryear.
Forgot to mention I only had one blade open in my block target on entry and both opened in my target vs the red collars wouldn’t open and completely pass through my target and deer for that matter. So hopefully the NC version opens on entry “on deer”.
Well, I couldn’t help myself and had to sharpen the tips on these. They were as dull as butter knives with burrs so big I could see them. Don’t know how they got past quality control like they were. Stoned each edge a few dozen times. The tips now feel sharp and grab on my finger when lightly brushing across them. No where near razor sharp but the tips would actually cut something now instead of poking through with the blunt tip.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures I ended up sharpening the tips. They were so dull they drove me nuts. Nice and sharp now. Hopefully I didn't jinx myself and they dont zipper as wide of a hole because the tips will cut easier and not "push" into the hide (with the dull tip) before they start cutting.
I had one open mid way on an elk..cork skrew in after that and missed. I prefer the collared versions, but switched to completely different head after that
I have used the regular hypodermic and just like the no collar the blades are the weak point.Penetration is also not great but not terrible either.Great test John once again!
I’ll be bow hunting with a Barnett 405 stalker for the first time. Out of these 100 grain rage hypodermics NC or the Swacker 100 grain for this crossbow? I’d appreciate your feedback 🙏🏻 great video!!
I watch every video no matter what. These are for some reason entertaining and maybe I see something that will switch from SEVR 1.75. I doubt it though 😂
I remember the Drury brothers used to use and sponsored by rage(maybe they still do) and was all they bragged about. Yet I watched their DVDs and non would get a pass through lol. Rage stand for big entry, no exit and no wound channel.
Have to admit the durability was better than I expected. But is that necessarily a good thing with a blade still breaking? I'd never shoot a rage at a deer though after all the horror stories I've heard.
I stopped using these after penetration issues on whitetails. I was only shooting 64# at the time so it's most likely on me for using a mechanical all together. They prob work real well for those shooting upwards of 70#. I have had buddies who had deployment issues though
This! People will screw these on their 380 grain arrow and shoot them out of their 50lb bow and complain about penetration. I wouldn’t use any 2” mechanical if I was shooting under 70.
So the real question is what happens after they pass thru hide ? Do they close up, i know the gel puts resistant on the blades but what about tissues ?
As soon as you showed that the blades don’t lock open, I was thinking that the resistance against the small tabs couldn’t be as great as the resistance of the blades themselves. Lo and behold, they don’t stay open all the way in gel. Seems like an obvious design flaw for a long-lived company. They need to either lock open or operate like Schwacker where they cannot fold shut while moving forward.
Yeah, it will make a big entrance hole for sure...and penetrate well because the blades may contract like that. Then when they hit the hide on the other side of the animal which is taught, they reopen...if they get that far.
I was surprised to see the point hold up in the concrete block, but it is troubling that the blades did not stay open in the gel. There are better options available.
Nice that they were able to eliminate the shock collar. However, the penetration is very poor and it's blades don't lock in place when open and are thin enough to be damaged easily. It's a good selling broadhead but in my opinion it's not one of the better broadheads.
I’ll be honest John, your testing with this head and the +p NCs scare me. My field results with these heads were amazing. Insane, almost comical blood trails and fast recovery. Never had a bad experience with a rage head. My primary head is the standard v2 deadmeat, got a lot of rage heads begging to to ride the quiver too tho haha. Despite the non deployment in the gel, I’ll have a rage or 2 with me this year.
Thanks for sharing that experience. It scored in the 80s…which is good. The blades opened on impact, but closed in the gel. That’s rare. But that only cost them a point. The ferrule is very strong. The blades were very sharp and it flew fantastic. The penetration in cardboard and the blade strength is just quite a bit less than several other mechs. But again, they got a “B” if you will; they did well. But they didn’t get an “A” for good reason.
I must be the unluckiest guy in the world. I took 4-5 deer with the Rage that had the normal "holy crap" fire hose blood trail. Then I took a hard quartering away shot on a nice buck and had the blade open prematurely with no penetration, arrow dangling, no blood trail. Then I had a Rage open up in flight and literally bounce off the chest of a forkhorn buck. Lastly I had a very big 9 pointer under me, facing away, at 4 yards. I was using a very adult 600 grain aluminum arrow, and hit him between the shoulder blades. Just about drove him to the ground and off he went. Found the arrow 20 yards later. Both blades broke off, inch and a half of penetration, no recovery. Loved the good blood trails when I got them, but couldn't accept the failures on shots where I did everything right. Been on the fixed blade train since and not going back.
This is why the rage will never find a place in my quiver ever again. I am for ever a fixed blade man. If I ever for whatever reason had to use a mechanical broadhead, it would be a sevr.
This head has blades that are designed to fail. In other words, the scallops in the bottom of the blade are made to allow the blade to bend backwards intentionally if they encounter hard bone. Unfortunately, this doesn't score well in your test, however, in Hunting I would rather a blade bend back allowing continued penetration.. Not my favorite head, but it did exactly what it was designed to do in your test
Yep. And it only got docked one point out of 100 for bending back a little. The poor penetration in cardboard and blades breaking in the 22 ga steel plate cost it more. It still scored in the 80…like a “B”.
Only did good in sharpness and I was very surprised on that. At least they have 1 good things going for it. Well I guess flight as well so 2 things. Rage has stepped up their game

Mechanical 2 blade heads that do not lock open generally do not fair well in your mdf/gel test.
