    The translation is literal.
The meaning in Japanese differs a lot from the English translation.
The theory about Aerith's death is based on the English one.
In Japanese it is more clear that Sephiroth is worried about planet's death, that he really needs Cloud to help him and that those 7 seconds are going to be crucial to save the planet.

Uh, this actually changes quite a bit. The original JP makes it sound like Sephiroth is genuinely asking Cloud for help...to save the world? Or to save both him and Cloud? Like, he sounds a lot more genuine in the original. The English translation makes it sound like Sephiroth just wants to continue being immortal and want to manipulate Cloud into meeting that goal and leaves his parting words too vague to tell what he actually means. The JP is more clear.

@@zelohendricks51 This adds SO MUCH context to what's going on!
We still don't know but WOW, hearing this, Sephiroth is definitely asking for Cloud's help, and it seems like this version of Sephiroth, has come to a realization (I feel he's the same version who told Cloud, "within my veins is the blood of Ancients... this Planet is my *Birthright"*) and now, he's trying to appeal to Cloud so they can both prevent the real enemy.
My friend's and my theory is Sephiroth discovered his Cetra heritage, and now wants to protect what he deems is his "birthright" rather than Jenova's desire to destroy it. BUT needs Cloud's help to overcome Jenova, and now I feel the REASON Sephiroth could never hear the Planet, was BECAUSE of Jenova.
I agree that the English also sounds like he's asking for help, but from the slight change of words, his intent can seem more ambiguous than the Japanese version. I NEED to share this clip within other circles!

I think she has had a hand in alot of this and with us killing said arbiter it released him from her control. Again I could be way off but that how I saw it

In Japanese, there are many first person pronouns. Sephiroth uses two different first person pronouns in the original FF7, one is "Ore" and the other is "Watashi". Ore is more casual and Watashi is more formal. He changed his first person pronoun from Ore to Watashi after Nibleheim incident. So his first person pronouns was always Ore before Nibleheim incident and this was the only scene he used "Ore" in FF7R. He was using "Watashi" as his first person pronoun in the entire FF7R except for this scene.

    • @Koniving
      @Koniving 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

That's because in some sense he is.
In Case of Lifestream the short novel, Sephiroth sacrifices everything he once was to summon Meteor. His memories of friends, childhood, etc. He changes to a "godlike" way of saying "I" in the original, and in advent children onward he refers to himself as "Watashi." In Crisis Core however, he uses a different way to say I, a less formal one. In remake, after jumping everyone several months into the future to Meteor, he consumes the Meteor, regaining the memories that technically Sephiroth wouldn't have sacrificed yet...if he was the original Sephiroth. But he isn't. The clone controlled by the original Sephiroth #49 dies in the Shinra building. When it tried at first to attack and kill Cloud it failed..unable to touch Cloud because a different more powerful Sephiroth is in Cloud's head. That one goes into clone #2. Here, you're facing #2, inhabited by the Sephiroth in Cloud's head, plus Jenova's body to make it more complete, and he consumes Meteor back, reclaiming all he surrendered at the halfway point of the original game.
Unlike the original Sephiroth, this #2 Sephiroth, this second Sephiroth (which is the first one you encounter in remake)... must say your name, Cloud. He's obsessed with Cloud, for Cloud is the very center of his being...and the only reason he can still exist after death. "So long as Cloud can remember me, no matter how far gone I may be, I will return." As such he taunts Cloud, cultivates Cloud, builds him up and keeps the memory of Sephiroth burning bright to build his own power until he can make his move. Once the original Sephiroth kills Barret and tries to kill the party and is defeated as Jenova, this second Sephiroth comes in and reaps the reward Kadaj-and-Jenova's-head style. With the Meteor, he's now complete.
#2 is a retcon number done on purpose if you think about it, the original "This guy are sick" clone in Sector 5 was #12.
During the arbiter battle if you look inside its heart, there's Sephiroth, trapped.. You freed him, killed the whispers, and allowed him the freedom to jump through time itself with a body. With Meteor consumed, he is complete. He is the Crisis Core Sephiroth, the Advent Children Sephiroth...he even makes some Dissidia quotes in there if you listen closely to the battle comments.
Meanwhile the original Sephiroth... won't know your name until he asks you in the cargo ship. He will then deny that you're even a real person for the entire first disc. He won't accept that the teenager that killed him is still alive; you're a clone, a copy, a doll, a puppet, you stole your image from Tifa's memories, you stole your identity, you're just another pale imitation of Sephiroth; you're nobody, "Don't deny me" says the original Sephiroth, one of only two sentences he'll afford you (Cloud) because you...are...worthless in his eyes. Just a nobody. Not even given a number.

Way back when Dirge of Cerberus’ secret ending was fresh, the running fan theory was that Genesis would lead a group of SOLDIER remnants in battle against a fully resurrected Jenova. Given Sephiroth’s original fascination with Jenova, it could stand to reason that after witnessing her in action, maybe even being defeated by her (since Genesis might possibly have resurrection powers), Sephiroth would think back to his defeat at the hands of AVALANCHE, and might be making sure Cloud is ready?
Idk, it’s a stretch, but it might finally give closure to Dirge’s secret ending

The worst thing that could come of these remakes is that Sephiroth is still just insane, and just trying to do evil things. I really want to see a deeper side of Sephiroth after getting this exchange.
Cloud gripping his head, having visions and seeing illusions, Sephiroth grabs his arm, he wants/needs him in the here and now.
This Sephiroth genuinely looks like he's trying to ask Cloud for help, but when Cloud outright refuses him, it's almost like Sephiroth understands that 'right now, he wouldn't help me'
Only to give him 'the rest is up to you' speech after disarming him. Cloud was vulnerable, he was bested, and Sephiroth let him go, not out of malice, pride, or confidence, but out of desire for Cloud to come to his own decision about events to come.

the sentence was more "...nor will I have you end" Which is a pretty nice way to turn the sentence. The accurate translation is good for conveying the original message but when you need to translate it and make it sound cool, the english version does a pretty good job. It's well turn and it still convey the overall message that sephiroth want cloud to survive (whatever is coming) The real difference is that, in the japanese version he tells cloud that he "wants" so that's more a "desire". While the english version convey more a determination "I will not have you end" as in he can't even imagine cloud disappear. So it just depend on what you like and how you like your yaoi fantasm.

Assuming that AC Seph was able to send his memories to the past or whatever, do you think a sane Sephiroth would stand by and let this happen if he somehow saw the future? I think it's a post AC Sephiroth with pre-neibelheim memories/sanity. In one of the novels, its said that he put his memories in meteor after being defeated by Cloud. Here, right before the final fight, Seph casts down meteor and then absorbs it (along with the lifestream's whispers), so he's gotten his memories back.

Canonically speaking after Nibelheim Sephiroth goes from Ore to Watashi/私 and when we see him in earlier parts of the game he does so but only here does he use Ore. I think for 0:42, #1 is the most accurate. を is used to denote an object. 消す is also a transitive verb, the intransitive is 消える, so #2 would probably be お前が消えたくはない. There's also a slight emphasis on "vanish" that doesn't come over in English. I suspect Sephiroth is saying he wants to defeat and kill Cloud, but doesn't want his existence to disappear.
02:18 I'm not sure the subject is "we". He doesn't mention the subject in that sentence. Without knowing for sure (having seen how the whole remake will play out) I think I would go with "but there's still time".

@@jack_fr0st3 Thanks for sharing. I adore this scene - who wouldn't fall in love with a girl like Aerith?
My own experience of the difficulties of expressing oneself in another language tells me that the translator nailed almost every moment in this scene. It's not word-for-word, but if Aerith was a native English speaker, I think 95% of that is exactly what she would say. There are one or two points that might be worth pointing out.
0:19 さって、どうでしょう。Aerith's English translation comes off slightly more challenging than the Japanese. "Well, that's the question" might be more on the mark, but I wouldn't change the original.
      0:49
      Cloud: Better than here?
Aerith: Stop teasing me [that's teasing] (Aerith uses this phrase from time to time throughout the game to emphasize when something is challenging her slightly, maybe in an unthreatening way).
      2:15
      Cloud: Treasure every moment. Right?
      2:33
Aerith: They all make me happy. (I think the English is much more what Aerith would say).
      2:36
Aerith: I was able to enjoy our time together. But... just... don't fall in love with me. Okay? (Could also argue "Don't let yourself fall in love with me", but I'm trying to go word-for-word).
      2:53
Aerith: Even if you do, it's all in your head.
      3:05
Cloud: Isn't that a bit one-sided? (I said these exact words to a girl I was interested in years ago 🤣).
      3:20
Aerith: It's all unfinished, but I'm happy.
This word 悔しい (kuyashii) is very difficult to translate. It's said when you lose by a little bit or fail by a little bit and want to keep trying, but you have to live with the feeling of losing or leaving something unfinished.
As I said, I would not use any of this in a translation, but I hope I've put this all into a bit more context.
If I can be of help to anyone, I'll certainly try. Feel free to ask.

This could be just due to cultural differences in communication.
And after... “but We can still make it in time, the future is up to you, cloud.” It’s is more like I still need your help, we can make it in time. Make a decision, you have time.

This is clearly AC Septh, he speak like him and have the black wing. Also, AC ost "The promise land" was played when this Septh first appeared in Remake.
As to why AC Septh decide to come back in time to change fate, it was due to Vincent's action in Dirge of Cerberus. As Chaos, Vincent destroy the planet's last resort to escape, Omega Weapon. With Omega dead, the planet's lifestream infected by Septh and Jenova is unable to join a bigger lifestream in the cosmo. This is hinted at 0:32 by Septh but he can't in the OG timeline. So Septh and Jenova are literally trapped in a planet sized prison till the death of Gaia.
This is some crazy fanboy theory of mine: The white cosmos in 2:32 is where Septh wants to infect. The shape of the cosmos resembles "Alpha" Greek symbol. Just bear with me, Alpha in Greek is the first alphabet and for this instance means the beginning of creation. This is probably why Septh wants to infect it and take control, to have the power to create, to become a God. Omega is the last Greek alphabet and for this instance means the end of life where the lifestream rejoins the cosmos.

The green planet in the background suggest that it could be our solar system because that is the color of Uranus when look at with powerful telescopes. We know Gaia is the same as planet Earth from Supernova. I think that is the image of of destroyed Earth. "That which lies ahead does yet exists, but our world will become a part of it one day" I took this as to mean our present will become this future. I definitely agree with your first assessment that Sephiroth is trapped and has no way to leave Gaia and needs Cloud. I also went back to watch Aerith's death and it takes exactly 7 seconds for Sephiroth in the OG to come down, stab her, and for her heartbeat to stop. I am wondering if he is giving Cloud a chance to save her because saving her would save the planet. I like the tie in with Dirge of Cerberus. Last week I noticed he says to Cloud in the alley way of Midgar "There is still so much to do" Which is what Genesis says to Weiss before he flies off with him. He also tells Cloud in that alley way the planet is dying and he doesn't mean from Mako. If the planet dies, he dies.
I don't completely disagree with your theory though. It does make considering the English translation they went with is The Edge of Creation. Perhaps that really is another nebula Sephiroth wants to go to a build a "Shining new future" funny how after he says that in AC when Cloud asks, "What will happen to this world?" and Sephiroth replies, "That depends on you." He was definitely saying, it depends on if you win or lose, but maybe after AC Sephiroth realizes that Cloud shouldn't be underestimated and as the last being with any ties to Jenova and the most complete of his "clones" Cloud could be the secret to immortality and godhood.
And there is no more Jenova. Sephiroth has always had freewill, but once he became one with Jenova he adopted her purpose but he has the control. He is like the Nephilim of Genesis chapter 6; in which, angels have a second fall from heaven after sleeping with women on Earth. These children were called Nephilim and had the power of angels but the freewill of humans, God floods the world to destroy them all. What had did the Lifestream do to the world at the the end of the OG to stop Sephiroth? It flooded out over it to stop meteor and boost holy. And if you think the bible is too far fetched to be involved her, Sephiroth is the word in Kabbalah (Judaic mysticism) for the sphere of the Tree of Life. Jenova is a combination of Jehovah (One Herbew name for their god) and nova, which we know is a very bright star. So Judaism being mixed into the lore is not anything out of the realm of possibilities.

He is asking Cloud for help in changing the future. He defeats Cloud easily, which no other Sephiroth can do. Maybe because he is still good, and Cloud is only good against the evil Sephiroth? Who knows. Very interesting. Looking forward to how this will be resolved in Part 3.

Keep in mind, the thing about literal translations is that they are out of context of the original cultural tones left by each language. It doesn't change the meaning, but a literal translation changes based on the person's understanding of the language and culture. There is more to the language than most people realize, especially when it comes to cultural differences, like how they use the words "I" and "you." Think of it this way; it's two ways to meet the same end as far as what is being accomplished by the words other than what is 'literally' said.

However, that said, the developers did a phenomenal job of translating. I can't blame anyone for using simple words that mean more by saying less. It's the craftsmanship of a truly professional English writer. The developers did a great job. That's one of my three areas of study, and it's fun to see this developer team use this professional practice in video games. The problem is always that they try to make the words in the english script match the moving mouths that were created originally for the japanese words. That's why the words are more "vague" because there is somewhat of an understanding of the message, but you have to fit them into a certain number of syllables and phonetics (as much as possible) while also trying to hold onto the weight of the original.
This is why many are complaining about the fact that the "english subs" in the game is just the english script rather than the actual translations. For the English audience context is being lost.

    1) I thought that Sephiroth was referring to Cloud when he says "I won't let you disappear too". But it seems that he is referring to the planet, not to Cloud.
    2) The seven seconds is totally different. It's clear that Sephiroth is saying "you still have time to join me.". In the english script it seems that Sephiroth is referring to Cloud that can stop everything.

Here's how I see it the name "Remake" in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Its actually a subtitle in the game. In the short it's actually a sequel to Final Fantasy 7. With that in mind I theorize that both Aerith and Sephiroth went back to the past using the life stream to try and change the future.

    • @Abishokaya
      @Abishokaya 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

One of the questions that the developers considered was: If we were to do it all over again, what would we do differently this time? They mentioned that they wanted to use the latest technology and flesh out the characters more. But those were just a few examples. The most literal definition of the word "Remake" is to "make again or differently." "to make a new or different version of (something, such as a movie, song, etc.)" " to make (something) into something else."
That said, there is quite a lot of leeway on this. You might say this is why a Remaster is a "1 for 1" and a Remake is not, but something different or new. "Remake" is officially part of the title; both Kitase san and Nomura san have mentioned this to be very deliberate. So your thoughts could very well be correct, but they are not confirmed. Nomura san said that he will not disclose this yet. So we await confirmation on the matter until a later date.

I know this is a weird comparison, but maybe the twist from this version of Final Fantasy VII, is that Sephiroth is not going to kill Aerith flat out like he did in the original game, but instead he is going to put Cloud in that predicament you mentioned in your comment:
"You`ve got 7 seconds to choose who are you gonna save, your love one? Or the planet..."
Something I personally wouldn`t like, is a totally happy ending, there should be a disturbing twist in order to make the story more interesting, and I don`t like the idea of a redeemed Sephiroth.

You're thinking more on the lines of Evangelion's human instrumentality project but I don't think that's what Sephiroth wants. He wants the Reunion of all timelines, including the ones where he wins. I think he knows failure awaits him in the current timeline unless the arbiters of fate are destroyed. In Rebirth he's actively hunting Aerith in every timeline and using the whispers to deactivate her materia. Even after playing Rebirth I'm not sure what Sephiroth means by seven seconds till the end. 'That which lies ahead does not yet exist, our world will become a part of it one day' refers to the reunion of all timelines, which is being set up for part 3. I think it's already beginning at the end of Rebirth because Cloud is perceiving Aeriths survival in the current timeline while the party knows she's dead and act like it.

Alright. I’ve been sitting on this for a year and a half now. Here’s my take: in the end of Dirge of Cerberus, if you collect all the hidden reports, Genesis appears, collecting Weiss, saying it’s not time to sleep yet. While this originally was probably just an excuse for Gackt to cameo in the game, Genesis has become so much more since. Whatever it was that Genesis went off to fight, I feel like it was a LARGE SCALE threat. Like, more destructive than even the Omega WEAPON. My best guess is that in a last ditch effort, Genesis revived Sephiroth and sent him back to this time to prevent the death of Aerith, who may somehow be able to stop this threat.
Now what might this threat be? That’s a tough question. But my best guess is that it’s the true form of Jenova, cells fully reformed, come to finish what she started, and even freeing Sephiroth from his old ways in the process.
This is all wild speculation (but we gotta remember which writer we’re dealing with here)

"I refuse", how is that said in Japanese? I.e. what exactly does Cloud say in this clip. Something: " kod...?"
