I've been waiting for this Mountain Test Course video...I really can't believe how poised the LC looked on those climbs. Granted the conditions were favorable, but it scurried up like a mountain goat with no missteps lol. This latest series has been great, your overall production quality and drone work help capture the "sense of adventure" well. Can't wait to see some of your new vehicles handle the snow!
Great rig. Fun to have a place to play. Or in your case, 2 places w/out the need for buying a Discovery Pass. BTW, if you really want that tilt/pitch angle #. Use your iPhone. Put it on the dash flat and you will get #'s. It is not of course 100% accurate but close enough for a point of reference for your viewers. The app to use would be, measure. Then use the level in it. I have done this and it is interesting. I used to just use a water bottle to get an eyeball idea on camera on how much angle I was at going up and or down obstacles until I found that item. Hope that helps. :)
I think the technology is awesome! The hybrid combo is something Toyota has perfected over the years in other models. I have 5th gen 4Runner and live in the mountains. It’s a struggle buggy when pulling steep grades. I would gladly welcome 465lbs vrs 280lbs from the old 6 banger. I will most likely be trading to a 1958 LC over 6th gen 4Runner, the look, build and features have got me thinking seriously.
With JUST 8”. This is due to the awesome engineering that’s with this vehicle. Tinker’s Adventure does a one of a kind phenomenal job at in depth detail.
Exactly right. Articulation range is exceptional. Its not always about the height but the combination of height and droop. This is what makes the LC exceptional.
Wow! They start at $63k and go to $102k here in Australia. That is only $41k to $64k US dollars. Usually things cost more here. We had a win this time.
That's because Aussies know this is a Prado and not a Land Cruiser, unlike most of us here in the States. Imagine trying to sell a Prado to informed consumers in Aus for $80000USD plus onroad fees ($130000AUD) and with a sewing machine engine vice the 2.8 diesel to boot! lol
Even considering the grippy conditions, the Land Cruiser is killing it. Toyota has achieved near Land Rover level traction control combined with really good articulation. Once this thing proves itself reliability wise, all the haters should quiet down.
I am addicted to watching these video's, who would have ever thought that just watching someone test drive cars and putting them to their limits would be so satisfying lmfao! Ryan thank you so much for your video's my brother, I'll continue to watch and support 🙂
Toyota should offer a factory installed off road suspension lift, wheel and tire option for the Land Cruiser, something like a 1-2” lift, 17” x 8.5” wheels with 285/70 R17 BFG KO3 tires.
Wash your mind in the blood of Jesus seven times. But one time is enough to clean it. On a bright side, 6 inches was always enough and highly recommended, just in case.
This pushing up is thanks to rear way bar that keep weight distribution even. Thats why its so capable when fornt swaybar is disconnected. Rear swaybar push front end down, to maintain all 4 wheels on the ground.
love the land cruiser videos! I have a 1958 im slowly saving up money to dump the initial mods into but enjoying it right now in its factory form. Waiting for all the land cruiser haters to want you to do the same trail when its dry because it did too well.

Yes North America got a better torque hybrid but I think Toyota either way knew Australia would need tried engines. However, I have known those who have bought it in Australia, besides smaller truck space and price, the SUV has been superb and even better than previous gen.
It’s hard to beat, I’ve put 12k miles on mine, lots of mountains and still no rattles, I have a TRX that sits now and also a FJ cruiser, this thing just drives good, I do wish it had a little bigger tank, but not a deal breaker.
Alright dessert before thanksgiving dinner love that color. I have followed your entire series on that land cruiser. Awesome video have a good Thanksgiving holiday.
As a viewer, it's hard to tell how difficult and steep the trail is; it would be helpful if you could compare other vehicles "We tried this in a stock 4Runner, and this is as far it got", etc...
This LC is continuing to impress me. I do have a question regarding the traction control system. I was watching some of the Australian reviews, since the new Prado 250 just launched there recently. It looks like if you're in Normal drive mode and either not selecting an MTS mode or do not have the center diff locked, A-TRAC/MTS doesn't do a whole lot. It was only when they either manually selected an MTS mode or locked that center Torsen diff did A-TRAC engage. Is that your experience? (Keep in mind these are bone stock vehicles from either the press fleet or local dealerships there.)
With the base 1958 trim it engages ATRAC when you go into 4-low. I don’t think it requires the center to be locked. (Though I did not test that specific scenario.) it’s my understanding that MTS and ATRAC are only on when either the MTS button is pushed or in 4Lo.
@ thanks! Some of the reviewers were surprised by the lack of traction control mediation. I guess we’ve all gotten used to crossovers and their active systems 😂.
Did your wheels move the tires outward slightly? I’m trying to get that similar look but the first set of wheels I ordered pushed the wheels out too far past the fender flares. They were 18x9 +18 offset. Yours look good!
Just to be clear, it is a modern representation of the Prado line. Please don't think that this is in any way in the lineage of the FJ40-70 series (no more than we and chimps share a common ancestor) It branched off from the line of full-duty LCs into a the comfort-focussed on-road light duty Prado line (J70 starting in 1990). Think Bronco Sport vs Bronco. The history of the legendary nameplates is online and available for all to read.
You should just drive up with 4 low and engage the features when needed to show how capable it is without needing all those extra things. My TRD off-road Tacoma is a beast and in the 4 years I’ve had it I’ve used crawl control once and the locker like 4 times. All those features engaged in most those situations is a bit of overkill.
Lower stock ride height gives best suspension travel compared to lifted vehicles. My stock GX550 Overtrail has more suspension travel than a friend's very modded, very lifted GX. Some TH-camrs demonstrate how this works, on hydraulic lifts. It is (for example) why Lexus did not lift the GX550 Overtrail, compared to other models. Suspension travel/articulation is superior, when offroad😊
That's kinda reductionist, and not accurate tbh. It all depends on how you achieve the lift and how, if at all, you modify the geometry of the vehicle. Throwing spacers on? Yeah, that's not helping (and arguably is hurting). Proper medium or long travel kit? You will absolutely gain travel. There's also plenty of circumstances where there's more of a balancing act. Clearance (and the associated improvements in approach/departure angle are very impactful on many trails and obstacles. Anyone who's scraped their underbody to hell in a rock garden can attest to that.
@@Gandalf_The_Jacked Lexus engineers explained it themselves, why they did not lift the GX Overtrail. No offense but I'll take their word over a comment section naysayer 100% of the time. My friend over on the channel Tinkerers Adventures perfectly demonstrates it too.
@@lunamaria1048 No offense taken! I don’t think you really understood my original reply. But hey, stock drivers can enjoy their suspension travel and those modifying their GX for harder trails will keep doing what I’ve described. 🤝
@@Gandalf_The_Jacked I understand perfectly that you did not interpret my reference. Articulation can not be increased by raising your vehicle, and suspension travel is not increased by raising the vehicle. You reduce travel and articulation with lifts and increase tire size. Engineers at Lexus are Japanese like me, so understand that articulation is the most important factor in off road performance, because it keeps your tires on the ground, and maximizes traction. Even Australian off road enthusiasts favor smaller tires for that reason, and laugh at the tire sizes used in the west. Only Americans think 35"-37" tires on midsized 4x4s improve performance lol
ok so now for the important question in south africa we only get the prado 250 (american spec land cruiser) with a 2,8 diesel with a 48v hybrid system, with 200ish hp and 370ish ftlb, or the gx550 with the same turbo v6, with the same power and torques you get from the gx550 at the same price give or take, is the extra fuel usage worth the extra 200ish hp and 150nm of torque?
@@JohnSmith-wx9wjland cruiser is slightly longer and is taller with more interior headroom. The ground clearance is adequate for the wheelbase on this truck. The key is to get big tires and lots of articulation while keeping the vehicle short and low. A sequoia with its wheelbase and ground clearance is absolutely terrible.
I would love for you to get under it with a tape measure and show us exactly where the 8" of ground clearance is. Clearly there's more than that under the rocker, looks like there's more than that under the front skid plate too. I'm thinking maybe it's at the rear diff?
We did that in an earlier video. It's closer to 9-inches with the slightly larger tires, as measured from the rear diff. I believe the official measurement was the low section up front.
@drivingsports Thanks, I must have missed that video. I measured my 5th gen 4Runner, with an aftermarket skid plate it has a little under 8" under the front skid. I do bang that skid fairly often, but the worst part is when I come off an obstacle and the front suspension compresses, then I have even less clearance and smash down on a rock. Typically I try to get my tires on the larger rocks to give myself more clearance, but it's not always practical.
Love your channel. I dont know how you sit so close to the steering column. Looks uncomfortable. From a safety perspective u sit too close. Do the wrist test. Extend ur arm. The wheel should rest on the inside of ur wrist. That’s based on airbag safety recommendations. But maybe for off-roading sitting closer does make more sense.
I think anything over 8 and a bit is enough. My old Volvo XC70 had 8.3 and it could go places most people would not go, like switchbacks with 6" rock stair steps climbing 3000ft in less than a mile - a place where the only other vehicles were modified Jeeps. Approach & departure is another story and where a lot of vehicles have issues... People modify their 4x4 to ridiculous level but most don't even realize the places they are going could be done by a regular sedan..... IMHE, you spend most of your trips getting to the destination, so there is a huge price to pay for basically just looking cool. FTW, I current have a Jaguar F-Pace, which is basically the same as the Range Rover Velar. It has no mode controls, you just push the APC button (Automate Progress Control) and it will do whatever it takes to keep things going. Between that and good tires, it's pretty unstoppable. It's a bummer Jaguar basically gave up, although it's reliability has lived up to reputation, it's just not reliable.
This shows how capable the Land Cruiser is. The simple upgrade of better tires makes a huge difference. Getting a Trailhunter 4Runner. Essentially the same vehicle with 10.1 inches of clearance, regular gas, selectable 2/4 wheel drive and a snorkel. I think it looks better too.
@drivingsports In terms of off-road ability, LC300 is better thank LX, especially LC300 GR Sports, with a much lower price. Don't understand why LC300 is not available in North Amerca.
Great review, love your videos. Question...with the way Stillantis is going and the quality issues with their Wranglers (currently leasing a "WILLYS" edition hybrid) im considering the landcruiser basic edition or even a RAV4 Woodland edition. Whats your thoughts or recommendation? Im afraid the wrangler is not a good long term choice.
I think you might like the step up in comfort of the Land Cruiser. You may not like the step down in capability of the RAV4 (seats aren’t great either IMHO.) But you’ll also get a pretty big hit with MPGs in the LC.
Waiting for you to do a video speaking or just mentioning how far you are getting on a single tank seeing that Toyota made only a 17.9 gal available in the US
It’s so odd that Toyota refuses to upgrade/improve their angle gauges. They completely redesign vehicles, introduce new vehicles, but can’t improve a subpar gauge? Seems a little ridiculous.

Question: does toyota let you keep the center diff unlocked in 4low?
Didn’t know you were that close. I’m in Yakima lmaooo
Just come up to Alaska, we’ve had snow FOR a month already!! 😂
I don’t know why 6th gen 4Runner and 4th gen Tacoma off road models do not come with steel front skid plate like this one.
Hey Ryan. Isn't the ground clearance closer to 9 inches since u did swap the tires, and by swapping to 33 inches, it gives u a bit more clearance?
Taller tire will give a bit more clearance.
Have you been seeing what dissent off-road have been doing with their Land Cruiser? Its been fun to watch
Yup, good stuff!
DStv much love from tanzania
This shows how capable the Land Cruiser is. The simple upgrade of better tires makes a huge difference. Getting a Trailhunter 4Runner. Essentially the same vehicle with 10.1 inches of clearance, regular gas, selectable 2/4 wheel drive and a snorkel. I think it looks better too.
Ravi pour vos essais qui sont sans aucun doute les meilleurs.
want a challenge see what happens running it all in Awd without the terrain features
How do u strap the maxxtraxx board on the roof rack?
Is the spare tire the factory spare? Any issues with using the factory spare with your Falkens?
Spare matches the wheel/tires mounted. They’re 33s.
What the specs of your tires and wheels? Did you lift your landcruiser?
Want to see 'vs. Subaru's 9.5" Outback Wilderness' on the same day same exact condition.
Just had the LC prado. How u put the shovel on the top roof rack? What mount kit to put the shovel? Thanks.
Would like to see the real Land Cruiser LC300 coming to North America
We’re getting a Lexus LX (based on 300) with front locker next year. That’ll be as close as we get.
@drivingsports In terms of off-road ability, LC300 is better thank LX, especially LC300 GR Sports, with a much lower price. Don't understand why LC300 is not available in North Amerca.
@@ericchang773 LC Sales in North American:
2021: 3,711
2022: 48
2023: 6
2024: 20,431* (est)
Did you remove front small wind deflectors?😊
Yes. Those would have been ripped off by now if we didn’t remove them.
How did you make it through Fortune Creek trail with just 8 inch of ground clearance last time? Anything stock will 100% have skid plate damage..
Good driving? (No skid plate damage.)
Looked like it went up better than the Grenadier
Well done Landcruiser! With all that traction, why not try that steep steep steep part? ;)
Lolz.
@@drivingsports It's gotta happen sooner of later. lol
@@EZapar Anytime you're ready. It's waiting for you.
@@drivingsports :). We gotta set it up before the rains. After that, nothing's going up it.
@@EZapar Too late now, already have squishy snow on the hill. That dirt is saturated with moisture until it freezes.
Waiting for you to do a video speaking or just mentioning how far you are getting on a single tank seeing that Toyota made only a 17.9 gal available in the US
Range is abysmal. Thankfully gas stations are plentiful in the USA. Even in the most remote areas you're never more than 200 miles from one.
This looks like the newest defender should have looked like
man, and that is valid question 😳
Is 8 inches enough is something I never have to ask myself. 😩😩😩😩
8” is never enough!
Go figure that!
It’s so odd that Toyota refuses to upgrade/improve their angle gauges. They completely redesign vehicles, introduce new vehicles, but can’t improve a subpar gauge? Seems a little ridiculous.
@drivingsports Nice wheels. Wait a minute. Those are stock wheels?😮
For a '24 Tacoma
are these original toyota rims?
How much psi you put with this AT tire for daily ? I recently purchased KO3 for my lc250, and find there are many debates on how much psi we put.
Currently at 48psi. Much nicer at 35, however.
