- When the Carlisle Thunderbird went on a Rescue Mission!
57304 Pride of Cheshire
15 May 24
I was on the station with some friends when I noticed a Very Short Timed train appeared on Real Time Trains. From Carlisle to Lockerbie. Aha, something has failed. Soon identified a southbound working from Motherwell to Kingmoor Depot was stopped near Kirtlebridge, south of Lockerbie.
Then realised why 57304 was being started earlier than usual.
Thunderbird is Go! (sorry for the corny Thunderbirds references).
So I headed to Springfield via Black Rigg Farm (in case it was already heading back south). No southbound trains were running. Three were stopped behind the broken down train with some were being cancelled.
The weather so far had been warm and dry. After the three delayed trains followed the rescued train (Three locos hauled by a fourth now!) I decided to get some snacks and then spend another couple of hours at Springfield. However it got very cloudy until the lack of light was causing speed blur. Then it rained so I gave up!

Glad you enjoyed it
I'm sure I'm not the only one of your viewers who have been waiting to see you filiminb a TBird being pressed into action!
You aren't alone. I did record one last year - but got fed up of waiting after 2 hours as they tried to couple up to a dead Pendo!
57 304 “Pride of Cheshire”. How bizarre that it had to rescue a train with three other locos in it.
I suspect two were already dead hauls
That was going to be my comment !!
Fantastic video as always Les, loved the countdown for the Thunderbird!
Many thanks! Nice to bring back memories!
Great well timed count down to start with Leslie! and another well filmed video! Thanks and best wishes. Ken
Glad you enjoyed it
I have many memories of working the Caledonian Sleepers from Edinburgh to Carlisle.
I;d love to be able to see them but unless they are very late it sadly hasnt happened

I remember years ago travelling by train from Reading to Edinburgh via Birmingham on the WCML.
Its changed a lot, I suspect
Hi, Les! Well, a right mess for the passengers, but some great shots out int he country. I think the cow was complaining you were interrupting lunch... or you got int he way of their shot. lol
I think it was just another attention seeker lol. Dragged me out to a favourite spot!
Great catch, I didn't even realise that move!
As I said in the video it appeared out of nowhere. A great catch all the same
Right place right time there. Luck was on your side
Certainly was - until it rained later on!
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Aww that was not good then. Very hit n miss with where it rains lately Huge storm not far from me and flooding yet not a drop fell on my house
Nice one Les great video nice to see them playing catch up enjoyed it take care a t b syd👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Great catch Les
Thanks
Seemed surprising that one of the other two couldn't have been fired up to slowly push the dead one south. Guess either something in the rules prevented that or the other two were also both being hauled dead on way for repairs.
I think it was a dead haul from Motherwell but made for a fantastic catch
A critic, ha ha
One of Graham Parker's friends. Good to meet you on Monday, Les. Keep up the good work.
And to meet you!
