@@noshititskrae I've not done research on this but I think it comes from how modern shoes tend to mould a foot over time by narrowing it, if you are aware of foot binding it could be comparable to that. In older times, the foot probably tended to be wider and have a lot stronger of an insole for support. Companies are realising this now and especially with sports shoes, a lot have more of an inside arch for support.

If the dancers being fitted would agree, it would be very instructive to see their bare feet each time. In that way Josephine's analysis of why she chooses a given shoe for a particular foot would make even more sense. Love these videos. Josephine is always very clear and understandable in her descriptions.

I had the same problem with sinking into the box and extremelly narrow feet, but what I have learned through this year is that my major problem was weakness, because as my foot started to get stronger this year I'm now able to pull myself up into the shoe and I don't sink anymore. And the shoes I used to like are not working for me anymore because they are really narrow and it's hurting me now. It took 5 years of pointe work but finally I have strenght enough to really dance on pointe.

Oh this is super interesting. I used to be super into fitting (as into it as you can be as a dance student with no opportunity to learn how to fit someone but reading about each company's lasts and models and the characteristics of as many shoes as I could) and haven't been really dancing in a few years, so the new Grishko last was a surprise. Based on what you described, the new model would probably work for me, too. We have similar feet! The last shoe I was in before I had to stop dancing was a Grishko Nova, and a Bloch Heritage before that.
I miss the whole world of obsessing over feet

That Stream Pointe sounds like it would have been the ideal shoe for me. I have very compressible metatarsals, yet wide and square feet, with tapered toes where my second toes are just a tiny bit longer than my big toes. I was fit into the 2007's as well. They were ok. I tried the block heritage and loved the shorter vamp as my toes are not that long.

I loved when you put the pictures of you in both shoes next to each other. I really LOVE ballet/dance. But I did not get into ballet in time before I ended up in a wheelchair. I still really love to watch all things ballet and dance. But not having been in ballet, sometimes differences between different shoes are not that obvious to me if I don’t see them (on) at the same time. But in the frame where you put the pictures next to each other, I could really clearly see that you were way more stable in the streamline shoe! Thank you for putting them next to each other, so for someone who has never worn pointe shoes, the difference was so clear!

I have the same feet as you and as a recreational dancer, the 2007 was a game changer, simply bc I wasn't dancing enough to run through shoes as fast as a dedicated one and the costs weren't worth it to buy a new pair before the old ones were dead. I'd been previously fit into a narrow Suprima but even they weren't perfect. When I can get back to dancing I need to try this new style!

I went from a custom Capezio Pavlova 9.5 2A to the Grishko Ulanova II in a 7.5 XXX before hanging up my pointe shoes. I have long, narrow feet with a super low profile. I was a 11.5N back then. My feet have shrank by some miracle now Even though I am in no shape to do pointe work, I've always wondered what shoe I'd wear these days.

They fitted me into Gambas twice and had them be way too wide. I had such a hard time getting on pointe in them. I also double-padded, which I shouldn't have done. When I got to do pointe again a few years back, they fitted me into the Gaynor Mindens of my dreams but then I ran out of money to take ballet classes. Those shoes support me but I did have the one shoe give me trouble the first time I wore it, but then it settled and they are cozy.

Those Stream pointes sound cool - I also have very narrow, tapered, low profile feet but the 2007s didn't work for me. No sinking but too hard to roll through and the tiny platform made me feel very unstable. I wish the newer models were available in my country!

My feet suck too! I was so in love with ballet since I was 9. I started taking ballet lessons when I was 10 and was really dedicated and did well until I went en pointe. I couldn't get over the box and I sank in may pointes and it was very painful. I was so envious of the girls with high arches and flexible feet. It was so sad when I realized that no matter how I tried to bend and stretch my feet it didn't work. Maybe it's pathetic but I am still mourning my non en pointe ability. I applied for the Royal Swedish Opera Ballet when I was 11 but I never went to the audition. This was in the 1973 and the Balanchine ideals for a ballet dancer body had taken over the ballet world. I didn't go to the audition because I knew that the jury would just take a glance of me and immediately say "next!" I was short with short limbs and no neck. But I am still obsessed with pointe shoes and I watch your videos all the time. Thank you so much for your channel! Maud, Sweden.

What's so interesting to me is the fact that ballet shoes are kind of a indirect record of human evolution, since our bodies are constantly micro adjusting because in the retroscale, we evolved a bit too fast for parts to properly adapt, hence why we suffer so many ailments such as knee problems and back problems, because just our entire legs haven't had the chance to correct the hyper evolution.

How do you compare shoes that are a lower crown and wider through the metatarsal vs narrower with a higher crown for compressive feet? Both may have the same total volume inside. I have worn shoes that look too narrow but once I 'squish the box down' , they fit but the propensity to be a narrower Mor column at shape seems to hold my foot in place. I assume it's best to wear a shoe that doesn't require squishing the box as part of the break in process, but I've never found success this way in practicality!

Back when I was dancing I was always deducted in exams for not being en pointe properly - but the shoe I wore compared to my feet were impossible for me to get fully on top of. If I’d had modern shoes I’d probably still be dancing (I’m 47 and quite when I was 18 after tearing my quad in a stretch - but danced from 2 years old and was in pointes by 10/12).

I feel like I have similar feet and I’m wondering, if you wear heels what brand of heels do you wear because it’s so hard to find heels that fit my low profile feet but my feet are also like long and narrow 🥴 I can never wear strappy sandal heels because my feet just fly through the shoe. Anyone else have this problem?

    ...the modern lower profile foot.
Jessica’s fluffy, no crown has ever been too high for me, bunion what, has entered the chat.
Seriously though, my feet are basically a semi-tapered tube. They’re wide, but they’re more consistently wide with a small heel and non existent metatarsals.

@@ThePointeShop I did end up loving the StreamPointe! I think because the box is moldable and the vamp is kind of a V shape, I am able to shape it to be a bite more round. I like it a lot better than the Victory that is aggressively flat in the box and kind of feels like a boot. The StreamPointe also gives you a lot of what you might like in a Freed but without all the drama, and a better shank, platform, and wings.
I do think though in a world where the StreamPointe didn't exist, I would probably wear the RP Entrada Pro.

Why are modern feet changing so much? I’m really curious.

My feet are freekishly narrow. I have to special order the Grishko 2007 in a 0X. It's the only shoe I can wear

I was fitted in a Grishko Novice 2007 for my first pointe shoe in 2019...sadly, they were horrible for me. I have very wide feet and toes. I thought I was being professionally fitted, but I was not. The box/vamp was too narrow/low and my feet would not fit unless I push them in and my feet would swell over it. I can not feel the floor because the shoe is tapered, so I was floating in my shoes and thus, could not balance and feel safe. My feet break high and the shank was too hard for me, it would pull me back as if I was fighting with it so I could not get over the box, it would also not break with my arch; it would break too low. I was shamed at the store for having wide, high profile feet. Sad time and a waste of money.
I though that my feet were not for pointe and quit shortly after. Now, after watching all these videos of fittings, I found out that my feet were ready for pointe and I was just fitted really badly. Might take up ballet again and get a new fitting somewhere else.

Why do you think dancers’ feet are changing shape? That is a super interesting observation!

Maybe it's more that fitters and manufacturers are acknowledging a broader range of viable foot shapes rather than making dancers feel like it's something wrong with them if they can't dance well in ill-fitting shoes.
