I am a former soloist with the New York City Ballet and Miami City Ballet. When I was a young student, I was always looking for insights into the ballet world and how to improve my dancing as well as beauty and lifestyle tips. Now that I am a professional, it is my turn to share.
On my channel I make ballet, beauty, and lifestyle videos for everyone of all ages. My goal is help dancers improve and achieve their dreams as well as open up the ballet world to non dancers. There is a very specific reason that we didn't mention what shoe Josephine fit me in. (And she always abides by this rule). You have to find what shoe works for YOU. Often dancers get swayed by name brands- "So and so wears this shoe so I have to also!" "Well Kathryn Morgan got these shoes so I want them to." And it might be the COMPLETELY wrong shoe for you. So I am totally happy adhering to the rule! I would like to wear these for a few months first. If I stick with them, I will probably let you guys know what they are! :)

Yep, my dance experience has been w/ tap and Latin, and I do neither professionally. But these are fascinating and somewhat relaxing.
My son danced but I was so fascinated watching the girls! And over time I could tell when girls had bad fitting shoes. One school always pushed 2 pairs only..I would tell them to go to a fitter at a real place!
I did ballet for a few years when I was younger. And probably never would have made it on to pointe. But I love watching ballet. And I absolutely love every fitting video I've seen on josephine's channel.

Honestly Josephine is just absolutely the BEST pointe shoe fitter in the world. I am based in Australia and my daughter has struggled to find pointe shoes to suit her hypermobility and wide feet. At the end of the road and with the possibility of my daughter stopping her love of ballet because we could not find the right shoe we found out about Josephine's virtual fittings. In just one appointment she was able to give us the details of the shoe to suit my daughter. Upon trying on the shoe she has never looked back and has danced better than ever before. Josephine is soooooo good at what she does she managed to nail the right shoe and drive her car at the same freakin time. We can't love or thank her enough. Amazing.

It's true! I fractured my arm when I was 7, and then decades later went for a pregnancy massage. The masseuse worked through clothes and honestly just gently touched my rib cage on that side and asked "have you ever broken this arm"? I've had lots of massages and no one else ever picked that up.

I have a student whose big dream is to be fitted by you! She has flat feet with a narrow heel and has not yet found that perfect magical fit-but she’s a go-getter and a lovely dancer. Her dad has promised her a road trip of her choice when she gets her drivers license and she wants to drive to be fitted by you! We hope she can!!
I just recently did a virtual fitting with Josephine and it was the same magical experience!! Mid-20s lifelong ballet student, ~14 years en pointe with ~1.5yr break between my late teens and "starting over" as an adult dancer. Never had a shoe I "loved" besides maybe gaynors as a teen. Josephine read me like a book over zoom in 15 mins and same thing, the shoes she put me in made my feet actually look pretty!! I wore them for the first time for 2 straight hrs of class and felt like I could go all day when I was used to limping around in pain after barely 1.5 hrs. Such a difference, I was slightly skeptical of a virtual fitting but can highly recommend her virtual appointments!!

As far as my feet go, I broke my right big toe about twelve years ago helping my mother move. It still hurts. I have to wrap it with a lidocaine strip at times when I dance. Now THAT is keeping score. 😬
Not a dancer but had a teeny tiny slip down (less than half an inch) and wrecked both Achilles’ tendons. That was at least 20 years ago. The left still flares up from time to time with the right one less occasionally but the right also has to deal with a bad knee that’s still iffy after 6 years from a popped cyst. Add in three broken toes, sometimes it’s just argh.
Each time I hurt one of my feet I put a rock in my other sock to even the score
I sincerely wonder if 22 years in slightly misfitting shoes is what led to her ankle injuries? She said her foot had never been able to go up en pointe quite like that before. The improvements in information and technology are really helping in so many lives across many disciplines.
I’m not even a dancer but I find pointe shoe fitting totally fascinating.
“It’s not you. It’s the shoe”! 👈🏻This👈🏻!!!! Thank you for putting these videos out! It’s so helpful for us to see that even very experienced/ professional dancers have shoe woes. Dancers! Don’t stay quiet! If you’re struggling, ask for help. Struggling with your shoes is NOT unusual. Even for expert dancers! If your technique, strength and conditioning are all solid, but you still feel you need a NASA engineer to design a shoe for your “difficult feet…”it’s not you. It’s the shoe!” My academy dictated what shoes we wore based an out dated and extremely flawed training philosophies (we were not allowed to use lamb’s wool either). I stayed quiet and did my best in the wrong shoe for years. YEARS! Compensating for a bad fit lead me to over develop lateral stabilizer muscles just to protect myself from injury. This limited my range of motion, caused repetitive stress injuries and held me back artisticly. My dance physiotherapist insisted I meet with a master fitter and it immediately felt like someone took a 50lb weight off my back. I was able to focus 100% on my dancing because I didn’t have to think about protecting myself while fighting the shoe. If I’d known then…etc etc. Don’t stay quiet. Find a master fitter and get the right shoe!
Watching this has taught me that
- some people's bad feet look WAAAAYYY better than my good feet.
- I should possibly stop blaming my pointe shoe for not being able to do certain steps (my left foot hates me though I swear)
- I am apparently the type of person that would consider a 14000km trip to get fitted in pointe shoes

You have taught me that I am worthy of dance, you help me be able to look in the mirror every day, which is a huge feat for me. you are such an amazing person, dancer, and role model. I hope one day I can tell you in person how much you have done for me. maybe this is what all video comments on kathryn's videos are like and ive just never read them before, but this is so cool and sweet. i know this is part of why she makes videos, but still really nice to see that they work.
I am so glad to hear that I am not making up being hyper sensitive. I have fair skin, and everything always hurts more, bruises easier, and generally makes me crazy. I get grief all the time from nurses doing blood tests, because needles hurt me unbearably, because I have very sensitive skin. Of course they all think I am being overly dramatic. After 51 years, your comment about fair skin has finally validated what I have always said about myself.
Same here! My feet always blister and bruise and get cuts so easily (like my first day wearing new shoes, that fit, I would often bleed) and her comment makes so much sense! I am practically translucent
I've been in post op from a c-section and several major surgeries and the recovery nurses are aware of these sensitivities. I had to develop a very high pain tolerance, and I stood out for not being in excruciating pain, but yes, sensitivities as a extremely fair skinned redhead are very common.
Yes! It was so validating to hear her say that. I also struggle with this. I’m not a redhead, but my dad & sister are. I have very similar sensitivities to them, as do my very fair daughters.
Nurse here, and you’re not alone. I actually suspect this is a type of autoimmune disorder or neuropathic disorder or both. I’ve seen it A LOT. Also a lot of fibromyalgia, lupus, and other stuff. I don’t know for sure, but I believe this may be a disorder where a physical appearance trait actually indicates a possible medical disorder or issue. I’m not wording it well, but for example, many redheads do not absorb anesthesia the same way as non redheads. They can often have difficulty being put under, and they can often wake up from anesthesia while still being operated on. Pain tolerances are also much less.
Yes I know that is terrifying.
In any case, if you have the very pale, translucent skin and find things so much more painful, I’d talk to your doctor and see if anything else needs to be checked out. It may save you from worse issues down the line.
I’m not a redhead. Blonde. However, my mother has told me many times when I was born, I had strawberry blonde hair till I was about two weeks old, then it turned white. My hair was “neon” 😂 blonde when I was a child, and progressed to dark blonde as I aged. I have always, all my life, been sensitive to needles. I remember as a child, I was 10 at the time, and had to have stitches in my knee. It took four grown adult men to hold me down because needles hurt. When I was 4, I was jumping on my bed and cracked my head open and had to get stitches. It took my mother and two nurses to hold me down. As a child getting my required vaccines, I had to be held down. I’m 53 and my husband has to basically sit on my opposite arm when I get blood tests because it hurts so bad I want to swing on the person doing it.
The before and after is crazy! You can tell such a difference and like Josephine said, they make your feet look so nice!

The fact that Kathryn Morgan helped lead me through starting ballet at 11, and Josephine has helped me learn so much about pointe shoes as I start my pointe journey. This collaboration is LEGENDARY!

You know it's a good fitting session when you just try one shoe and then spend the rest of it gushing about how beautiful your feet look and how comfortable you are.😄
I wish professional schools would do this for the young dancers at the beginning of their training to get the correct shoe 🙏🏻🙏🏻🌻
If you watch some of Josephine's fittings with younger dancers, it doesn't really work like that. She fits them for their first pointe shoes, then at regular intervals thereafter, and often the shoe she recommends (not just the size, but the model and even the brand) changes from fitting to fitting. She actually explicitly says in some fittings with beginners, "this is not your forever shoe, as you get stronger and your technique improves you'll need something different." As someone dances more and gets better, their feet change and so do the shoes they need. Once a dancer is an adult, their feet will change much less and, as they say in this video, having experimented with different shoe types when they're younger, they'll have a much better idea of what their preferences are. THEN you can find a "forever" shoe.
I agree that young dancers should get regularly properly fitted though. I dread to think how much long term damage has been done to young dancers' bodies because they've been improperly fitted.
What an education that was. WOW! I was particularly struck by the statement that the body remembers it's injuries. When I was 16/17 years (now 60 something) I strained and inflamed my metatarsal ligaments in both feet. After 4 months rest and restorative exercise I was left with being able to step onto pointe, but not relevè onto pointe without considerable pain. I continued dancing, but gave up ballet class halfway through my first year of Bachelor of Music studies. I have remained in performance in theatre in one form or other and concert work. My ballet training gives me a sense of presence onstage and the ability to connect with the audience. Anyhow, enough about me... How wonderful to see an experienced professional analyse Kathryn's feet and know precisely what is needed to provide maximum comfort, fit, support and aesthetic effect. Even the professional needs a professional! This holds true for any pursuit be it art, science, business etc..... Thank you both for your level of excellence.
Videos like these make me so sad there are no fitters like Josephine in any nearby country here. It truly makes such a difference how she spots the issues immediately and knows what to do about them.
I think she does virtual fittings over the Internet, using a camera. So you could look into that.

Russian school - "Tire-bouchon" (pronounced tee-ear-boo-shon...the 'shon' sound is quite short.

There are various thoughts about what Tierbouchon actually is - most modern ballet teachers use it to indicate the higher retire position used by the Russian school ie above the knee, with the toe on the thigh or slightly devant. I was taught that (decades ago - and yes, I had Russian teachers), in order to achieve the 'corkscrew' movement, the toe is actually drawn up the leg, from the ankle to the thigh, as you are turning. For example, whilst doing a grand plie in Centre work, when coming upwards you simultaneously turn, also drawing the toe up the leg - hence the 'corkscrew' movement, the downward pressure (mass) from the body, transferring energy unto the supporting leg (force), to achieve the upward thrust for the turning gyroscopic mechanism (and yes, it is physics!). From this movement you can end in a high attitude derriere etc. You will see it in Vaganova school videos on occasion - it is taught after the 4th grade as Tierbouchon requires a great deal of stability and balance, including a strong core. The other name used for it is Raccourci. The full name is En Tierbouchon. One of my teachers was Sulamith Messerer, sister of Asaf. They both danced with the Bolshoi. She was an absolutely fantastic teacher.
Could I also add to my rather long epistle - Tierbouchon has two spellings depending on the teacher. 'Tier', meaning several levels or layers or 'tire' meaning pneu, part of a pneumatic action (to inflate, using air or gas - the upwards motion from the plie for instance). I was taught Tier as the levels meaning is a more accurate, understandable, description, ie going up several levels (the leg). The 'bouchon' is the corkscrew part as louise mentioned.....Hence, going up several layers as you turn.
My daughter just had this moment when we went to a new store that had a 3/4 shank! She loved them and she could roll down for this first time.

They kinda look like Grishko StreamPointe. I have these shoes and THEY ARE PERFECTION. They just work for you and your feet in every way. I tried them on during a fitting and had the exact same reaction as Kathryn.

It is amazing what proper tools will do for your craft. I do crochet, and it is amazing what a difference the proper tools can do. It is not about price, or vanity, but what is the best for the job. Watching these two, made me feel good. Two crafts persons in synergy. Amazing!

I absolutely love this, I love watching Josephine fit dancers and I love that you were able to find your perfect shoe. As a dancer myself it took me a while to finally find a pair of pointe shoes that work for my feet because I have really narrow feet and they are very compressible. I ended up finding the RP Rubin 3width works best for me.
I've never danced and have no familiarity with ballet personally, but it was so fun to see how much joy the right pair of shoes can bring a dancer

You looked like you were going to float away (in the best way possible) when you were dancing with your new pointe shoes! You looked so light and so happy! I feel like the best of dancers are pretty good at masking any discomfort they're feeling... but its hard to mask when you finally feel really comfortable for the first time or the first time in a long time... and you were just exuding joy! It was a pleasure to watch. I also found this super informative. I had no idea about past injuries can cause permanent swelling and I knew favoring could happen but I always assumed I favored my left side because I never received PT after an injury... but perhaps that's not the only reason. (sprained my 3 of the ligaments in my knee at once but have sprained that ankle on 6 separate occasions and broke it once without knowing it for 6 weeks) I have some things to talk about with my ortho now. Thank you!

Delighted to learn of the range and variety of pointe shoes now available. I was a dancer in England 50 years ago and have just completed by 3rd set of corrective foot and toe surgery. Do so hope this is now a thing of the past for current professional ballet dancers.
