EMT Conduit Bending: Best way to bend a Gooseneck Accurately

- Ill show you how to Bend a Measure Gooseneck accurately. I say measured because most of the tradesman that use this bend eyeball it or wing it and end up with something else that just doesn't look right and or is kinked.

One thing I didn't explain in the video that I definitely should have. This is not a bend that you want to really do on exposed work. This is mostly for residential work like that example I showed in the video. With that said there are low voltage conduit installers that use it a lot so that they don't have to use condulets. I have seen some conduit runs that look really good with this bend in it. I'll leave it up to you to choose when to use it or not. I personally have used it here and there on exposed worked and only when a condulet was not an option.
@Aaron Ausmus Glad you mentioned it. One thing I mention in the video is that this bend is mostly used for residential applications where electricians use EMT and they have a j box mounted on a joist or truss and they're running the conduit right on top of these trusses. Well an LB condulet would be nice other than the fact that it's getting sheet rocked. Or commercial applications where your running low voltage or fiber optics and you can't use an LB consult cause the radius of bend is too tight. Lastly a good time to use it is when having a condulet would be inaccessible. Listen, I've used this bend maybe a good 10 times in my life. I try not to use it and if I do I try hard not to have it so exposed. It's not a real attractive bend to everyone. If I do use it I make sure it's on a nice and tidy run. I would install it after a run that has an offset followed by a 3 point saddle and a 90 stub with a kick. Get my point? Hey thanks for watching my videos and most of all for the comments. @Aaron Ausmus actually it's a few degrees over 90. And no, it would technically be harder to pull cause of the bend before the 90. Know what I mean. With that said it's no more difficult to pull wire through than a regular 90 with a kick.

Got a chance to do this bend at work yesterday. I learned about this bend in a conduit bending class but forgot the details because there hasn’t been a need for it and time has passed. Watching your video helped me to get the job done! 🙏🏼👍🏼
Oh wow cool. I'm glad Im able to help you out. This bend is actually a special bend. It's almost been forgotten and lost because not too many electricians know how to, 1. Bend it properly, they don't know the actual formula 2. They think an offset and a 90° bend put together is the same thing.
Also I have to say there's one thing I didn't mention in my video. This bend is mostly for and should only be use in situations where it's not going to be exposed work. Mostly residential. But it is used sometimes in exposed work. low voltage electricians use when they can't use Conduit bodies because maybe they're running fiber optics on the conduit and the conduit body is just not an option. Also to some electricians it's not a very appealing bend. Anyway glad I could help

Yes i apologize for my videos being long. The thing is i have a lot of apprentices that watch the videos or guys that basically never bent too much conduit. So i need to get into every detail. Also i am trying to sent myself apart from others. Conduit bending is a skill that isn't really learned by studying the formulas and bending. You actually need to put the work in. I have tried this type of bend before but a different approach. I did a 90 bend first then add an offset. I like this way better because its simpler. 👍
Thank you. Not for nothing this way is the right way to do it. Amd its called a gooseneck. Also the 90 with an offset people call it a shepherd hook ( 90 w/ a offset ). Either way os cool. But this is the right way to do. Thing is people made up the shepherd's hook because 90% percent of the people never learned how to do it the right way so it was just easier to do a 90 with offset. I will admit i use sharpie sometimes haha, but it is its own solvent.
A little wet sharpie on the dry and it wipes off. Non pourous surfaces.
Entering the back of breaker panel through a block wall below grade for feeder run this works well.

Thanks a lot, if I could recommend you two things:
1. Can you get one of those wireless microphones so whenever you are away from your recording cam showing a bend, we can hear you better because the eco noise takes over your voice.
2. Changing the background soundtrack to a different tone could be more pleasant.
You could also use a LB but this also works I wanted to learn this bend got it down now thanks boss

A pull 90 or LB would look way better and faster but if you were out of them this is a great bend to know how to do
That's all i'm trying to do is teach brother. I mean it's an official bend. Wether it looks nice or not is purely opinion. I've done a rack of 10 of these all lined up looking absolutely nice. And we didn't have to worry about an LB up about 15 feet. We were able to pull straight from a pull box 5 ft off the floor. So honestly what looks good to you might not look good to me. What works for me might not work for you. But it's not against the Code and The conduits are install in a neat workman like manner. Thanks for the comment. Appreciate the comment. Again thanks. To remove sharpie marks first scribble over the mark with a sharpie then rub the ink away with a cloth or your partners glove. Actually works pretty well.
In my 50 years never did one. Old timer that I trained under would not allow it so always used a LB condulet. Can see where it would be great to use if you are out of LB'S. Cheap union guys would use it just to save a few dollars. Was a royal pain when they used it in a tight drop ceiling.
Yea i hear ya. I use when i have to. Most foreman dont want to see a gooseneck exposed. So if i can get away without using an lb then ill use the gooseneck but if i need to put a box cause im over 360 already then i just use the lb.
Cool bend, how many different types of Shepard's hook do you know?
I only know 2 ways of bending them. The one i posted and another where you bend an offset then a 90 stub. But the only official bend thats in the actual books that you learn in trade school is the method i posted. And its actually called a gooseneck. But most people do call it shepards hook. There is no wrong or right as long as its neat, level and gets it done.

Not sure what you mean. You have two marks by the 90. ONe to make the 90 then the other to over bend the 90. the last and 3rd bend is the center bend that is a 22.5 degree bend but you have to line up your first mark with a straight edge and make sure its level then where your conduit crosses the straight edge you place the mark and bend it with arrow 22.5 degree. Is it possible for you to make a video of running conduit above ceiling with obstructions?
So i dont understand. If its in the ceiling and there's obstructions. What is it an offset? Cause i have video's on offsets already. Can you be specific?
I had to bend my back bend at the star or it wouldn't work. I'm using the same Klein bender as you too on 3/4 conduit. What happened? When I used the arrow it came out parallel with the tip

This is funny i first learned how to use a bender when my dad fixed our ping pong table from the legs bending and collapsing. He used the bender to straighten them
what if you just want to get around a corner without going into a box? do i just measure to the corner and follow the same steps, would there be any shrinkage?
Well it's used to go around a corner too. If your not going into a box then you can use any measurement you want but I think there is a minimum stub of at least 6 inches.

Will it work using the ideal bender, the foot press looks different in size from the klein bender
Yes of course.
What would you do if your pipe was running underneath the wood then had to go over the beam on top of the box
In that case i would have to offset it the conduit to get it on top of the wood so i can do this bend. it's the only way. it obviously wont work the opposite way cause the sheet rock has to get installed and you dont' want the gooseneck sticking out of the ceiling.
Is there any way to do this with an electric bender? I don't see how bend the 2nd mark is possible without over/under bending it therefore, throwing off the 3rd mark (22.5 degree mark)
yes you can use the same markings on the second bend just over bend it to about 95° then the 3rd bend do the 22.5 or just put your level on the stub how I have it in the cover puc of this video with the level vertical and keep bending till its level. simple...
don't worry about over or under bending because the 3rd bend will take care of that with a level like I said in the first message. But you still have to lay it out the way I showed you in the video.
Do recommend the south wire bender ?
Ive used it here amd there. I dont come across the southwire bender too much. Its a decent bender it reminds me of the ideal bender. Very similar.
Does the size of the conduit matter for the 3/8 mark?
no not at all. same. but this is only for pipes that you can bend on hand benders. so that means it's only good for up to 1 1/4. that's as far as i've gone with the method. never tried bigger than that but i'll experiment and get back to you. as far as the 3/8" mark yes it's the same no matter what size as far as I know up to 1-1/4". On your third mark. Do you always bend at 22.5 or can you bend it at 30 or 45 degrees too??
Always 22.5 give or take a little but should be 22.5 or or the 90 wont be level
Is there an accurate way to lay this out using 100% center-bend measurements. Like let’s say I wanted to bend a 135°-45° gooseneck offset bend in the middle of a run. How do I lay out my travel and is my loss/shrink accurate as if it were a normal 45° offset? I have tried laying this out with tubing multiple times and can never get it right. I can do a simple offset followed by a 90°, no problem. But for whatever reason, combing that 90 and 45 together just seems to throw something off. I also use the 4 mark bend method, so I’m able to find my gain for a 135° angle. This video is nice, there is just some instances where it’s tedious for me to line the tubing up with a straight edge due to multiple bends already put into my tube.
Honestly I wouldn't do a gooseneck with multiple bends I would keep it separate.
@@TheArtOfConduitBending I gotcha. And it’s not necessary in most applications, it’s just nice to know. I like the idea of eliminating an entire bend by combing a 90 with your offset angle. Same concept with kicks. You can bypass the need for a kick with just a 90 and an offset, but you have a cleaner aesthetic by combing the two. Thanks for your input!

yes in regards to using hand benders. other benders might be different.

Careful to those out there doing this on EMT sizes other than 3/4, this is not going to be true for you.
The reason for this second line is to give your bender enough material to grab onto in order to "continue" the 90 into a "hook" shape.
Curious if that has to be a 22degree bend. Can it be a 10 or 45?
yes definitely has to be a 22 degree bend. Now sometimes you'll either under or over bend the 90 more than you are suppose to. Then you'll have to compensate by either bending a little more or less than a 22. So it all depends on the over bent 90 you bend. If it's done correctly then yes you'll have to bend a 22 degree bend so that the straight portion of the conduit is level. hope this helps.

So i actually did this bend, thanks to you. But when my foreman saw it, he said it was illegal and had someone take it down. How is that so?
Some foreman will go over board and say that. In the code it says we can not make bends over 90 degrees. There are some things that are so minuscule that it really doesn't matter. Although I should have said this bend is mostly for non exposed situations mostly for residential where it will get covered up. Like over trusses. Sorry but he is right. Schools teach this bend though. Either way he's the Foreman
I would just use and LB before I did that. Cool looking bend though
Thanks I like the bend too. I hardly get to use it anymore cause ive been doing h heavy commercial work. As far as LBs are concerned what if the conduit was for Low voltage cables or even fiber optics?
Funny how everyone says use pencil, while they are using a sharpie. There’s a perfect reason why they use sharpie, because it doesn’t magically disappear after grabbing the EMT. Nothing wrong with lines on a conduit.
When I'm marking the 90 (for ex. If i measure and need a 8 inch. 90 in 3\4 emt do do i subtract (the 6 inches) and put my 1st. mark at 2 inches or put my 1st. mark at 8 inches)?

@@eazypeazy7743 it works on every size upto 1-1/4" I haven't done with larger than that but you wouldn't want to. I'm sure there's a formula. Like I'm almost sure they got it from the trig table. The cosecant to the angle.

What if your distance apart is less then 6 inches. I was using your technique at work but I had some distances that were like 2-3 inches.
What I usually do. If it's got to be shorter than 6" I'll bend a 6 inch piece and cut it to the measurement I need. Now I do want you to know that there is a point that you can't cut because of the bend not letting the connector go on. Hope this helps.

I call a shepherds hook an offset with a 90. This i call a gooseneck
we used cheap bender, so its hard to do it right.
I can bend this pipe without making all those marks ..just need my 90° stub measurement..but I was told try to not make these kind of bends....
Yea I agree if you don't have to make the bend I wouldn't. If you can make the bend with out the mark that's good. This is for those that want to learn the formula to do this bend accurately Everytime.
I don't think you can have more than 90 degrees of bend in a single bend per code..
How to bend a goose neck pro tip: buy an LB conduit body and next time let someone else plan your pipe run. Just kidding! Make sure your run is short and without many more bends because pulling wire through those can be a pain
