    Absolutely correct observation. One can crop for longer FL, but one can’t just find the wide angle range of 28-43 when having 43… There is absolutely no reason to get 43 if one has 28. Even for new buyers, 28 is more versatile, and more fun, and definitely more useful…

      Focal length is not only the crop. It’s different picture even with the same framing: different space compression and different subject-background separation.

    • @whygamewhy
      @whygamewhy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Wrong. Compression is only related to the distance from the object. Not related to the focal length. An 28 mm f1.7 with an 1.5x crop is essentially a 42mm f2.55 in all category while retaining the brightness of 1.7.

    • @ChrisBoultonPhotography
      @ChrisBoultonPhotography 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Can’t you use the Brenizer technique for when you want to go more wide angle on the 43? I use it frequently when I want the compression of a longer focal length but more of the image panorama in the shot (I stitch together in LR after). I usually use back button focus/lock to do this but not sure if the Q3 has this?

    • @MortenSvane1

      If you enjoy the 28mm focal length as default, then yes. But no everyone does. Me for instance. I had the Q2 and just could’t get used to the 28. I however tried a Ricoh 43mm, and felt right at home, because I reaslly like 35mm. So it is perhaps more versatile with a 28mm, but if you don’t enjoy it it makes no sense and them the Q3 43 is a far better choice.

    I’ve upgraded from Leica Q(116) to Leica Q3 43 and use it for a week now. And I must say I’m leaning towards to change it to Q3 28. Because exactly - I miss 28 so much and 43 I can crop if needed. And I don’t need these extreme 120 and 150. I will give myself another week to get used to 43, but as for now I don’t see why should I love it more than 28.

    I have both an ORIGINAL Q and now the 43. Digital crop is fine, but I feel in-camera isn’t necessary at all since I can crop anywhere I like in post. Also, even if you crop with the in camera selections for the JPEG, the perspective remains that of the native lens, you are not getting the same compression perspective as you do with longer focal lengths.

    This is the best analysis that I’ve seen comparing the Leica Q3 28mm vs 43mm. All of the points you make in your video are, in my opinion, totally spot on. I recently purchased the Q3 28mm as a replacement for my Canon 5D Mk IV with a boatload of Canon L glass. Most of my shooting was done with either the 24mm to 70mm 2.8L lens or the 24mm to 105mm L series zoom lenses. I would also have a 70mm to 200mm 2.8L lens or even a 100mm to 400 L series zooms with me, and never really use either lens unless I’m out doing strictly Landscape or Wildlife photography. The Q3 28mm I have fulfills 75% or more of the photography that I do everyday with the handling and output of the Q3 28mm equal to or exceeding the Canon 5D Mark IV system that I’ve had for the past 6 years. The fact that I have the 43mm in my Q3 28mm in my crop range (up to 90mm) is the ideal capability that perfectly fits my photography shooting interests.

      In the Red Dot shop in London they showed me a large print made from the tele crop end of a Q2. Although less than 10 mp (8 I think) an A2 print looked great from normal viewing perspective. The Q3 is more versatile and the 43 really for portrait work. Rich folk could get both but then you are better with an interchangeable lens camera.
      Canon L primes are excellent quality. Pro zooms are more for convenience. I have a full Canon kit but it’s too heavy and bulky for weekend trips with cabin bag limits.
      For me, as a travel enthusiast the X100 V1 and wide angle converter is fine, light and a lot cheaper. I’m afraid the red dot on the Q3 could be a theft magnet like a Rolex in many cities.
      I’m off to the main cities of mid Spain next week. Think my Fuji and iPhone 15 pro max will suffice….and they are waterproof.

    When I first got the Q3 28mm, it took sometime to get used to shooting and thinking about that focal length. It was also my first camera with that high of a resolution (typically a M4/3 shooter). Looking at the full resolution images in a computer, and crop capacity, it changed how I thought about shooting at the 28mm and having the confidence that I can re-compose the scene after. Sometimes, I wish that the Leica would allow punch-in in the viewfinder, instead of the frame lines. I think that flexibility would be really appealing! That and 180 shutter angle on video. Make it happen through a firmware update, Leica!

    • @iGefen

      I wish the same thing you mentioned here about the punch-in in the viewfinder! At least let us choose between this and the lines.. really can't understand why Leica is deferent from other systems in this.

    Very well reasoned discussion. The 60 MB sensor with that fabulous Summilux makes it possible to crop while maintaining a high quality image. Realizing with the 43 that one completely loses the 28-43 range seals the deal for the 28. Thank you 🙏

    I am so grateful for your video! When I heard that Leica had launched the Q3 43, I first thought: that can't be true, was I mistaken about the Q3 28 and should I have waited? But you get to the point: you give up so much with the Q3 43! With the 28 mm you have a very special look that other cameras with a longer focal length simply can't achieve. Many photos with 28 are extraordinary, with 43 mm they become "ordinary", no longer distinguishable from similar systems from other manufacturers. You get an average image composition and waste so many options that you have with the Q3 28. Not to mention that you often can't capture the the entire picture with the 43 mm. You confirmed my own thoughts and gave me the certainty that I made the only right decision with the Q3 28. Thank you very much for that!

  • @dominicwei770
    @dominicwei770 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I fully agree to your opinion about the focal lengths.
    I also own the 28mm and I love my Q3. I would never trade it for a 43mm. The 28 is much more versatile. I use it as my main travel camera and sometimes even the 28 is not wide enough for me. Everybody states that 43 is what you see. But that is only true perspective wise. Your Field of view is much wider. So you will never be able to catch the scene with a 43mm but you can always crop in with a 28mm.
    As a summary you can say that if you are more into persons an objects, then take the 43. if you are more into buildings and landscapes and want the Most versatile, then take the 28.

    I absolutely LOVE this Video! I recently purchased the Q3-28 in August, and was beginning to wonder if I should have waited for the 43mm, up until this Year, Leica Cameras weren't even a thought to me, My Main Cameras are Nikons (Z9, Z8, and ZF) Leicas are new to me and I do enjoy my Q3-28, I mainly bought the Camera as a Compact that's easy to walk around with, and take great pictures while on Vacation. After using my Q3, I've come to find, that it is far more than just a street shooting Camera, and it's 60mp and Cropping abilities in my opinion puts it in a class of its own. My thought has always been, who would spend that kind of money on a fixed 28mm lens?. I'm glad to say, that I'm one of those people who would gladly spend that kind of money on a fixed 28mm Lens Camera. I will likely pass on the Q3-43, and hope that Nikon will eventually make a Zf II Camera with a larger sensor, or wait to see if Leica make another Q camera with a larger lens option.

      I have had the almost identical experience in that I have Z9/Zf and just purchased the Q3 28 a couple weeks ago right around when they announced the 43. I'm really enjoying it. And like my Zf experience, I like how it allows me to slow the process down and focus (literally) on my art. Or use it for fast street/portrait shooting. My thought is also to use my Zf with a couple Voigtlander (50/35) or Nikon lenses to offset my kit to get closer as needed.

    I had a Q2 Monochrom (I regrettably sold it) and recently got a Q3 43. I prefer the 43 mm Summicron on a fixed lens camera, but certainly could be happy with a Q3 28. I have other Leica cameras with interchangeable lenses, so I can always go super wide if necessary.
    If the subject isn’t moving, it’s possible to create wide fields of view by stitching multiple shots together.

    @nicolasletellier6162 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Totally agree with you. The quality of the camera gives you the freedom of cropping a lot, and getting the 43mm you lose too much from the wide angle. Sometimes in one photo I took, I found I could crop it in 2 really nice photos, and with a less wide lens, I would lose that.
    And about a future camera, I dream about a Q camera with an L mount and a joystick for the AF. The L mount would give me the freedom to choose between adapting M lenses or using L lenses with AF, that would be the perfect camera for me.
    One question about the Q3, I don't know if I go crazy or if you saw that too, but when I shoot at ISO 50 and/or underexpose my photos I find the black, the contrast and the colors look a lot better.

    I loved everything about the 35mm on my Leica M9 and it became second nature. I mostly use the Q3 as a second camera when I do video jobs or for private purposes. I Love everything about the camera, the lens, the sensor.But even if you can crop, for me ideally you take the photo exactly as you want to have it in the end. I talked a lot with colleagues about it + my workflow is a bit the problem as well ;D I make my first selection when importing the pictures to Lightroom, and for some reason you then not see the crop factor unfortunately...so sometimes I then missed out pictures where I used the crop mode...

    What about compression? Cropping into a 28 gives you by no means the same look as a longer lens. The 43 has more lens compression than the 28. Just another thought to consider

    • @christianwagner6213
      @christianwagner6213 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sorry but I must contradict. The perspective (Compression) ONLY depends on your distance to the subject. If you shoot with 28mm at the same distance and crop, you have the same compression as with a 50 or 75mm lens. Depth of field and resolution is another story of course. But the idea of a different compression is a widely perceived misconception as this is physically not correct.

      Not only that, you have also a way nicer bokeh with the 43. Its impossible to get that with the the 28. Unless you go extremly close to the subject, which will end up in distorted face. Im currently owning both Q3s but I am thinking of selling the 28 veesion. Even thought having both is an killer combo (but an expensive one...)

    Yes, the 28 mm Q3 is a more versatile camera. You can always crop to the 43 mm focal length and still have about a 25 MP file, which is plenty. Although the 43 mm lens would allow you to crop into proper telephoto ranges and still have usable resolution.

      Leica has a zoom lens for the Q3, it's called cropping. If they added a optical zoom lens this compact, you'd have a variable aperture, and likely f4 at 50mm, in which case, you have the same "lens compression" and the same bokeh as when cropping on the Q3. And a zoom lens will always have worse image quality, less sharpness, worse bokeh, more CA, so you don't gain anything, except from really long zooms. If you want a f2 zoom lens then this is possible, but it will be giant and QZoom will weigh 2 Kg...

    Hi! I realy appreciate how you are defending the 28. And yes, I also felt a bit uncomfortable when I first got the Q3 23 six weeks ago. But I softened the plunge by using 28 on a 24-70 Nikon zoom the week before I got the Leica to accommodate myself to the focal length. During the following weeks I learned to love the Q3 28 - but still, I bought the Q3 43 too, owning it now for a full week. Why? It is true that I can crop in with the 28, but I don't like to crop so much, as I want the full quality of the sensor - and not so much a diluted version. So I'm keeping my Q3 28, my Q3 43 and my Nikon bodies with some prime lenses - the later ones for sports, action, wildlife, where the Leica is simply to slow. As for street: Leica reigns supreme though. Both Qs, one for more tight places, one for more intimate shots. I actually love to have the choice to use different cameras with different glass for different occasions. But I also understand your desire to simplifiy life ;-) But as I said: I sometimes want to write with a fountain pen, a ball point pen, somtimes even with a pencil. ;-)

      @@iGefen Hi! This is a difficult question. As a matter of fact I own a Z8 and a Zf from the Nikon range - and some glass of course.. The most reasonable answer would be to keep the Z8 and use a zoom lens. Most, if not all tasks could be covered by such a choice. Speed, range (let's assume 24-120). But in reality I very seldom go for the "easy" and sensible solution. Sometimes I put my Voigtländer 50mm f/1.0 on my Zf, which is a manual lens, well knowing that I'll miss a couple of shots due to a) extremely shallow depth of field, b) the requirement to focus manually.Sometimes I put the "Plena" 135mm f/1.8 on my Z8, knowing well, that this will become cumbersome due to weight and that I'll only be getting certain shots and no "grand total" of the scene, the surroundings at all But I still make such choices. I very seldom take a bag full of glass with me. Why? Because I do it for fun, I don't have to sell my images and I don't have the responsibility of - let's say a wedding photographer. And also because of my back :-) . But I disgress, and I'l give you my answer, which is two answers actually: A) the Z8 with a zoom, if I would be on a tight budget and would want (or need ) to get a certain percentage of "keepers" B) the Q3 43, if I would not be compelled to get a certain percentage of keepers (which I wouldn't, when it comes to fast movers) but just for walking around and shooting what doesn't slithers away fast enough.. ;-) Does this answer your question?... Stimpt, wholgesprochen. Were I in your situation with a 28 already I would understand. But I am coming in to my first Q and like the focal length. I have the X2D with the 55 and like that, the same effective focal length. This is it in a more compact size with the auto-cropping. And I rarely like to shoot wider than 35 and even then rarely. I think for me the 43 is fine. But your video is well reasoned and well presented. Dankeschoen.

    I think 28mm is a big part of the whole Q-Idea Leica had. Having a fixed lens should deliver from wide to slight tele. As of now, the 43mm is just a special model and replaces the Q3 Monochrom which will not come anymore. I think Leica is just giving in to a lot of their core customers for who money is no concern. And they wanted a bigger focal length for years. It will be interesting if Leica is doing more versions of the Q in the future or if its just a special version like Monochrom. I think the best selling point is that 43mm is an APO lens. If someone really sees a difference there, there is an argument that this sets the two models apart.

      @@lelandfitz1762 I really agree with your point that the 28mm is connected to the Q , it always has been 28 since the Q1 & the Monochrom versions. I'm not sure why Leica made this decision, one can argue the opposite that the 43 mm appears more for people who don't have a Leica..

So once the Q3 43 was announced, I sold my Q2 and some other gear and bought an elusive Q3 28, because I guess, the overwhelming popularity of the new Q3 43 made a few Q3 28 cameras available. The Q3 with 28mm focal length at 60mp is extremely versatile IMO.

    Hi Gefen. After so many years that people are sharing mobile phone style pictures that are basically 26-29mm, we have learned to accept the wide angle view as the standard pov. So, suddenly, the Q3 with 28mm seems the perfect choice.
    20 years ago, it would have been the 50mm. So our perception to a standard lens has changed over time, and its OK.

    I’m keeping my Q2 - the ability to crop with 47 megapixels is in practice no worse than with 60 megapixels, or at least I couldn’t notice the difference with it and my M11. For portraits, the focal length doesn’t make much/any difference provided you resist the temptation to step in and fill the frame with your subject. If you stay the same distance away - pseudo frame lines help you to judge this - you’ll get the same picture with only a very minor difference in depth of field. It takes a while to remember this. I have several shots where I stepped in and the subject’s nose is huge!

      @@WildridefilmsI might not have the terminology right but watched a video comparing the same shots w a q3 28 and q3 43, and different crop versions of each shot. What I noticed is the background is further away w the 28 compared to the 43 even when cropping the 28 to a similar focal length as the 43. For example if you have hills in the distant background, they looked further away from the foreground subject. Is that compression? For many of the shots the 43 looked better to me because the background had more presence in the shot. I have a q3 so been curious if I’d prefer the 43 look.
