    Important Note: When I did this video, I had intended/assumed based on my title wording that the audience would be primarily people who either already had a SmartThings base system in place, or were considering going that route. But if you're not already familiar with the SmartThings home automation environment, you many not be aware that at the heart of this system is the SmartThings Hub, which is the master controller for all the devices you add to your SmartThings configuration. This is why I included links to the SmartThings Home Kit and the Samsung Smart Home webpage for additional information. This Smartlock is not really intended to be a standalone device (though it can be if all you want to do is use the keypad for keyless entry...but you won't have access to any of the automation options I demonstrated). I hope this clears up any confusion out there.

    I know this is old but how do I add multiple codes in Smart Things? I have rentals and MiCasa Verde allowed me to add up to 32 codes and set expiration days. Can Smart Things do any of this?

    Battery Life note: I just today replaced the 4 AA batteries after getting a low battery notification. So the original batteries lasted almost 1 year under what I'd call moderate use. Not bad!

    I know this is an old video, but what is the cheapest way I can get this to be a "smart" lock? I didn't read the box well enough and thought it had a built in interface or an app to download. Kind of feel like I just spent a ton of money to buy a simple key pad deadbolt. I'm not planning on doing any other automation. I just want to be able to lock and unlock from anywhere.

    It saying I need a hub device but I have a Alexa will that work???

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors
      @ReeWrayOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With this particular type of lock, a hub is required for any remote control or scheduling functions. Alexa by itself is not sufficient....it just adds voice control integration to the lock through the hub. You can buy smart locks that don't require the hub since they can connect directly to wifi and can be Alexa voice controlled, but they also cost alot more as a result.

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors
      @ReeWrayOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. You'll need an automation hub of some kind that supports Z-Wave devices.

      @@raghavendravaranasi7909 This is the hub that is basically the successor to the Samsung SmartThings hub (since Samsung decided to stop producing hardware and focus on the software): amzn.to/31Ccibc It is the Aeotec Smart Home Hub.

      @ReeWrayOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's a version that's basically the same thing I'm demonstrating, only without the automation integration: amzn.to/38qpgdp Or, probably more like what you are asking for, here's another one that is wi-fi connected and does have automation options, but doesn't require a 3rd party hub: amzn.to/2LuENzQ (also notice the price is going to be significantly higher on these kinds of locks). Hope that helps!

    Thank you for a detailed video. Quick Question: Can we automate to lock and unlock the door when the configured mobile is near the smart lock? if yes, could you please throw some light on it.

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors
      @ReeWrayOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This Kwikset 888 I show in this video does require a smart hub connection in order to remote control it (but then you can control it from anywhere). To do what you're asking, you'll need a 'wifi' connected smart lock that does not require a smart hub. They're a bit more expensive, but something like the Kwikset 99390-001 would be what you want to look for.

    Not sure what your long term experience is with those? I’ve owned three, all purchased from Amazon. Two of the three have failed secondary to moisture and rust in the battery compartment. High quality Energizer batteries used. The two that failed lasted less than a year.

    Can I add multiple entry codes thru the SmartThings app? I want to add one for my housekeeper and exterminator so I know if and when either one of these come in the house. I could only figure out how to set up two of them. Is there a way to add more?

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors
      @ReeWrayOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This Quickset lock does allow you to add several codes (up to like 8 I think? I'd have to check the manual) - but you can't do it through the SmartThings app- -you have to program them from the physical lock. I just got a new lock in which I'm starting to work on reviewing today that will definitely allow you to do that from the app, as well as add time/date constraints to access. It's very cool. Will hopefully have that up in 4 or 5 days.

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors
      @ReeWrayOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just looked at the manual for the 914 and from what I can tell, it would require a Z-wave compatible smart home controller in order to remotely control it from your phone.

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors
      @ReeWrayOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nikeshreddy5356 For the Kwikset in this video, you definitely need the Hub. For the UltraLoq I linked for you, you can use a hub (for max functionality), but it also can operate without a hub and just use the app - but you won't get remote unlock/lock capability since you'd have to be within Bluetooth range to control it via the app.
