      To be fair it probably felt like a lot longer than it was because we had it on sims since its release in Japan but Konami TCG waited like 2.5 years to import it because they *knew* it would be broken and they also knew they couldn't hit it because pre-MR5 so many people wanted that card to exist so that synchros would be playable. It was definitely around for longer than it should've been and many other cards died for its sins before they finally got rid of it, but it technically wasn't as long as it felt in the TCG.

    As a big Edison fan, I legitimately want to hear MBT's rant about Oppression. Personally, I think it's fine as there are to many effects that it doesn't hit like Vayu or Treeborn that allow strong plays to happen even under Oppression. Additionally, the card being 2 sided is interesting and forces you to only play it when you feel like you have control of the game, almost making it a "win more" card.
    But that's my take on it, I'm curious what MBT thinks, so I'm sad the rant got cut.

      Edison revolves around many what ifs.
      "What if my opponent has Heavy storm? " "What if my opponent has Gorz? " What if my opponent has Ryko? " .Hand knowledge is so busted knowing you can play by ignoring specific threats.
      Pair it with the ability to remove a crucial normal summon/combo piece (I.e. goblin zombie) and you will make your opponent fall so behind in tempo that's really difficult for you to lose.
      Arguably in goat it is more okish even at 3.

    I’ve been playing Goat semi competitively for a year now. Graceful and Pot are fine in isolation, but I legitimately believe the format is ruined by Delinquent Duo. I cannot stress how incredibly frustrating it is to just instantly lose from duo hitting a one in five in your opener and sniping your chaos, your own trinity, etc. I’ve decided to give up on it entirely because the ceiling is so high that often it just comes down to “who gets trinity first” and that sucks

      Reminds me of how old Magic was in that there was a lot of good mana acceleration and card draw spells only it didn’t really matter as the best boards to end on involved like, a 7/6 with a penalty effect that could also die to the loads of excellent removal spells in the format as well. Discard spells usually weren’t an issue because they tended to be overcosted but yeah, everyone would have played Hymn to Tourach (similar card to Duo) if it didn’t cost anything lol.

    • @sevennights6377
      @sevennights6377 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agreed, I think Graceful and Pot are fine mostly since they don't change game state THAT much (7 cards to 6 is fine) but Duo is just a win the game card going first or even second a lot of the time. It's way too strong if you hit ANYTHING good with it and being at 4 cards to 5 with an established board matters way more than 6 cards to 7 from Pot or whatever.

    • @ivanmaterazzo2631
      @ivanmaterazzo2631 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Seven Nights 6 to 7 and 6 to 4 (while your opponents loses a card as well) is the same thing (in both cases you make card economy 17% better than your opponent's).
      The problem arises when your opponent resolves Duo when he is already ahead in card advantage:
      -Opponent has 6 cards and you have 5: by resolving POG he would shift card economy in his favour by 17%.
      If he resolves Duo: he passes from 6 to 5 while you pass from 3 to 5, summed up he gets a 23% advantage.
      -Opponent has 6 and you have 4: doing the same calcs your opponent gains 33% by Duo.
      On the other hand, and I'll save you the cals, when you are behind in card advantage you ALWAYS want to resolve POG instead of Duo cause the net gain is higher.
      That being said: POG and Duo are equally sacky depending on the game state.
      The thing is you can still play around Duo in some capacity (i.e. sinister serpent, Thunder dragon, Assailant) while if they resolve POG you just have to deal with it.
      To sum it up: Graceful>>POG>Duo.
      Peeking your top 3 while setting up your GY and turning it to a plus 1 thanks to Serpent, Assailant or TD makes it hands down the most sacky card in Trinity.
      Edit: Also filling up your GY after being hit by Duo helps Chaos a lot.
      Another argument in favour of POG being better.

    • @keshersygo
      @keshersygo ปีที่แล้ว +4

      on the contrary, i think graceful is definitely the most toxic of the three. there are so many ways to play around Duo, or to construct your deck in such a way as to minimize the EV of duo. you can play thunder dragon, night assailant or sinister serpent. you can play a deck like warrior that sets its hand. but with graceful charity, the ability to sculpt your hand, to see three deep, to convert into a plus one with the same cards that stymie duo, to set up your graveyard...this one card does WAY too much.

See how many people are running night assailant and TD in Warrior or any deck that is not chaos. That's not an argument for it being worse, that's an argument for it making one deck better. Serpent at least is flexible but it's also a 1 of so saying "hopefully duo hits when you have serpent" is wishful thinking.
      My point was also that being down cards at the start is significantly worse than both players being up cards but having 6 or more to choose from. I would argue having 3 cards against 4 is a bigger disadvantage than 6 cards against 7, that was the whole point. You have less tools to problem solve with and less ways to hit your engine and cohesive strategy. Some decks do very well on fewer cards (Warrior) but Chaos and basically every other deck can feel really bad when you only have a few cards and can't put everything together.
      Generally I think Pot and to a lesser extent Graceful can definitely sack games but over the course of a long game generally both players have a good chance to see it whereas Duo is basically disastrous early game and horrible the rest of it. Not to mention ripping cards can hit key pieces (Warrior lady, Breaker, BLS, Chaos Sorc) and leave your deck without important parts which is much worse than your opponent having 1 extra card generally.

      If you haven’t played Edison (I would recommend trying it) it really is only a powerful card but not even universally useful.
      One of the most common boss monsters in the format is caius which easily outs it or ignores it and dominates the board because it’s two sided
      Almost every deck can out it and Edison is a pretty slow format so they have time to find the outs plus it’s quite hard to set up otks and people just play monster removal so it being reciprocal really does matter

    • @avarice25
      @avarice25 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Just because Royal Oppression is a win con 2-3 years after Edison doesn't mean it is a win condition in Edison. Maxx C, at one point, was legal to play, and arguably a bad card against any deck that wasn't Six Sams.

    Believe it or not, the consensus on Vanity’s was that it was a bad card up until Ruler format when 1 guy topped a YCS with 3 in his deck. The combination of Rulers being the first good deck that could abuse it and most good decks running less and less back row made this card a must play.
    When it came out, there weren’t many hand traps so you had to have the maxed out Solemn package, and other good traps, in order to have a chance at most games and Vanity’s contradicted that mindset since it would send itself to the grave the second you tried to stop a Normal Summon.

    Yeah if I see someone complaining about oppression being the biggest problem with edison format I immediately know they’re either new to edison or just bad. Every deck mains backrow removal and there are plenty of ways to deckbuild around it that don’t add dead cards to your deck against half the format like maining 3 cosmic in 2023 might.
    Dustshoot, mind/brain con, future fusion and gorz have stolen far more games than oppression ever will.

  • @Sleepy0173
    @Sleepy0173 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Kudos for fast-forwarding the Royal Oppression explanation. You either flip it after combo's been established and keep control of the board, or you don't, but even if you don't it is a terrible card to have in the format.
    BLS in Tengu is nowhere as bad as BLS in Goats. Still pretty powerful yes, but by then there were more tools against it. Solemn Warning, Veiler, it could eat an Honest/Gorz/Trago, get Gale'd and having Synchros means more decks can more consistently get rid of it in general.
    On the other hand Edison is like going back to the Synchro era without half of the most iconic cards in the Synchro era like Quickdraw, the Plant engine, Veiler, Duality, Agents, post-FTK Frog variants, T.G, omni-HERO decks (not just Ab 0), usable but adequately restricted variants of DARK, LS, and Blackwings, etc. Edison has its charm but I think it is oversold in these takes.

    As a big hat format player (and yugituber ;) ) maxx c is very good and healthy for the format
    Contrary to joseph's belief, no, you shouldn't just play combo decks, especially when nowadays everyone is maining maxx c and if you don't side 3 crows you're insane, that's easily proven by the most competitive hat tournament on 2022 having 5 CAT (Cardcar artifact traptrix) 6 Geargia and 5 mermail pilots with only 1 infernity pilot out of 21 people.
    Also the best deck that main decks vanity's is sylvan and sylvans are... not very good in the modern HAT Metagame. But sure, it is annoying, especially when infernity (an actual decent deck) plays it, but it's irrelevant enough in the format for me to really not care
    Pleiades is very strong, yeah, i would know, i'm the only person in 2022 to top with constellars (i also mained vanity's lol). Though, Felgrand > Pleaides
    If you get handed, git gud, there's a reason CAT is now the best deck and HAT is mostly just an inferior deck (with a very strong CAT matchup though). There's also a reason why geargia hands is the best geargia build, cause if you set it it's a lot harder to play around it by just getting good and putting your monsters in defense position
    On another note, fuck geargia's soul charge, holy shit there is no more frustrating feeling than finally wittling the geargia pilot's resources only for them to soul charge and go +4 on you. And that's why i'm currently on Geargiakuri with 3 soul charge :)
    I don't even hate soul charge in the format, i think it's fine for every other deck, even infernity, i only hate it in geargia

    Dustshoot in a lot of older formats, particularly Edison. Going 1st in Edison is already ridiculously powerful due to the nature of the format (flip monster prevalence, recruiter prevalence, strong Traps), on top of drawing turn 1. If you're going 2nd and get Dustshoot flipped on you it feels almost impossible to come back.
    I despise Oppression with the hatred of a thousand burning suns, but at least the card keeps Frogs and Zombies from being leaps better than like every other deck. Dustshoot just sacks games for no reason and adds nothing to the format.

      1. That’s simply untrue ocg has maxx c and the best decks across the last two formats have been combo decks
      2. Konami isn’t trying to reign in combo decks. One of the key objectives in Konami’s modern card design is that interacting with your opponent, especially in varied ways, is fun. This means combo has some design appeal over control because there are more interaction points in the combo itself and the end board is generally more varied. This is also why hand traps are so prevalent they let both players play at the same time and add way more interaction points while letting the game have a higher power cieling at the same time
