It makes sense for Phil to give you the thunder spell because in the Hercules movie, Zeus struck him with lightning in order to get in the trade Hercules.
Also for anyone watching the video, for the strongest magic possible equip Sora with a keychain that increases his MP by 2 or 3 points (the former can be acquired after obtaining the basic level of all seven spells in Merlin's house, the latter from defeating the Ice Titan in Olympus Colosseum), and also equipment that boost his MP by one or two points each (such MP boosting equipment can be synthesized and two instances of equipment that boost MP by two points can be found in the game). Higher MP makes damaging spells and damaging summons exponentially stronger, Aero, Stop, and summons last longer, and Bambi to drop MP orbs that restore more MP (at 5 and 7 MP). Though, if you focus on MP over strength, Sora's physical attacks may become very weak especially against bosses.

Wait, isn't Gravity optional? You claim you can skip the Thunder spell entirely, but then claim Gravity which is later in the Olympus Coliseum storyline isn't optional. Oogie Boogie and his manor are optional bosses which is why he gets stronger after Kairi is rescued, similar to Ursula's optional boss battles.
You have to get there from the Gummi Ship menu. If your further in the game you have to defeat the secret boss, Phantom, at neverland's clock tower. You get to fight the Phantom by talking to Tinker Bell in the ship's cabin. Once the Phantom has been defeated you can go back to the clock tower. Hope this helps
Are you playing in final mix? If it’s final mix then you receive an upgrade to your gravity magic after sealing halloween towns keyhole, but what upgrade you get depends on what form of gravity magic you have at that point.
