Honestly, the attention to detail found in KH1 is something really lacking from future entries. Whether cutscene continuity, or the way your spells interact with the world like in hallow bastion, or the entirety of wonderland being a huge puzzle dungeon, or being able to use the chemistry set in the deep jungle to make better potions. It was just so clearly a passion project.
That’s part of why I find KH1 to be a much more interesting game than any of the other entries. Not to say that it peaked with the first entry, but the first game has a certain atmosphere and vibe that none of the other games have ever been able to replicate. KH2 has interesting moments and the combat is cool, but KH1 makes you feel like you’re part of the world with things interacting with you as much as you interact with them. Whether that be the Hotel clerk at Traverse Town or as you mentioned, the entirety of Wonderland.
After watching a G-theory episode about why Elsa being the baddie was too spicy for the final product, I think part of the issue is Square Enix needs permission from all of the other teams who made the block-buster films. No surprise that Disney higher ups kill passion for profit.
Yeah, KH1 integrated the overall story with each of the worlds, while KH2 and on tried to separate the disney worlds from the main story. Though they react to the heartless, there's no more of the villains working together except Maleficent, and even then, she is more annoyed that there is another organization trying to take away her power, rather than being the omnipotent threat tying it all together. Really is a shame cause it feels like they're trying to remove the Disney half from the story when that's kind of what really tied it all together. Though I do like how Dream Drop Distance kind of alludes to that as Sora and Riku can complete the worlds in either order and the perspective you see cutscenes play depends on which one finished the world last. I also like how they handled the Syphony of Sorcery scene where Riku plays the keyblade like a conductor wand and you see a light implying Sora is playing too which opens the boss fight for Riku. From Sora's perspective, he sees the same light but is just hoping that he was able to help Riku out. as he doesn't fight the boss. (I forgot who Sora fights in that stage if anyone).
Seeing Riku act that way in Monstro after being captured by Hook seem unsettling. Like he's become much colder, less likely to justify his action. I can see why people would assume he was fully possessed by Ansem.
@alexruiztorres5662 still, it's at least heavily implied. While it isn't stated outright, riku himself says and shows he was the intended keybearer, and when riku is embracing the darkness, the keyblade very clearly rejects him in favor of Sora. It's pretty easy to infer what the game is getting across.
8:50 I actually did this the first time I played, but not having Alice in that scene REALLY adds to the ambience of her not being present in the cage at the end of wonderland
Sora's face when he says "Riku?! Is that really you?!" was an expected gut punch during the alternate Monstro playthrough. He goes through a rollercoaster of emotions in his face, you can see at first he's shocked, then confused, then almost like afraid (like he doesn't know what Riku's going to do), then you can see him push past those feelings to try to be there for his friend because he misses him. For a game that uses stock animation faces a lot, I'm glad they went into that level of detail with this alternate telling of the story. And it really works for the player, because honestly, we are just as confused as Sora is, and it is legitimately hard to tell (especially during that first cutscene), if it actually is him or not. Couldn't imagine what it must've been like for a 7 year old to play this version of the game before any of the other games came out lol
I like how at the end of that version he goes "Liar! You're not Riku!" which kind of makes sense as when he does get to Hallow Bastion, he's convinced the Riku he thought was his friend is somewhat gone and replaced with this malevolent version of his friend. Though I think he handles it more directly in COM as when it's actually a fake Riku, he seems to quickly assume that Riku's memories were scrambled and tries to help him only to later get his own memories scrambled and thus he never feels like he was betrayed. I miss when Sora used logic to realize when something was wrong...makes his behavior in KH2 where he's just emo as all get up make zero sense.
The Snow White/Alice one is actually really cool and I kinda prefer it with Snow White just because otherwise she's one of the princesses like Aurora who we don't see until the end and isn't involved in the story so it's cool she's included there
@@SpenserHerrington-ls3be It gets retconned in Birth By Sleep to have started 10 years before KH1 takes place. With the Alice/Snow White swap scenes, Snow White will be in the cutscene even if Alice's trial is past in Wonderland. If you don't defeat the boss in Wonderland before completing Deep Jungle, Snow White will be in the cutscene instead of Alice. I have done it many times.
Awesome video. I've experienced most of these scenes but never side by side! For a game that's over 20 years old, the devs really paid attention to the finer details.

I think you may have missed one Monstro scene difference . At some point, either after the jungle or after Agrabah, if you go straight to Traverse Town, there is a missable cutscene that introduces Pinocchio for the first time in Cid’s shop. This will probably cause a slightly alternate scene to play on seeing Pinocchio again in Monstro
This comment is pin-worthy. I only recently replayed KH1 again after not having played it for years. I had never seen that cutscene that introduces Pinocchio in Traverse Town. I honestly prefer the idea of meeting Pinocchio for the first time in Monstro because the missable cutscene implies that Pinocchio has just been riding around in the Gummi ship with you the entire time. Either way, it's a scene worth mentioning.
I actually don’t think it changes the scene, it’s just implied that the party is already familiar with Pinocchio which only makes sense if you meet him in the Accessory shop but I will double check this 👍🏻
@@ShadyRikuYeah I always assumed they knew him because they're all disney and didn't think much, but given the default has them "knowing him" already, that would be the one changed if you haven't met him yet. Even another alternate version is the visit of Atlantica when you finished hollow bastion and sealing the worlds keyhole the Ursula boss health bar is higher which means Ursula somehow became harder to defeat in but before you beat hollow bastion her health bar was low which means she’s easy to defeat she was also harder in giant form it happens when you skip Atlantica
True, same thing happens with the Parasite Cage in Monstro and I assume Cerberus. They all scale up their health and damage post Hollow Bastion. It’s nice because you can’t just destroy those worlds by being over levelled!
That’s not really an alternate version, it’s just that the world level of every world goes up after Hollow Bastion, making everything in every world harder.
I’ve experienced that when I skipped it for that Speedster trophy. It took so much longer to beat her, yet she doesn’t get defeated by us taking out all her HP.
I think Leon and Sabor might be the only alternate most of us seen. at least on first playthrough. there kind of aggressive fights with NO HEAL there kind of a skill cheek along with Island Riku
so I finally learned the pattern on my last playthrough of KH1 of the Riku Destiny Island fight, I think it was on every 4th hit, he does the falling on back into foot charge, which you are then able to dodge more reliably knowing it happens exactly then.
I was curious to see the differences. Thanks for making such a comprehensive video. I like that they altered them just in case someone takes these routes and they dont accidentally "resurrect" a bad guy.
I think that was probably the more "intended" scene, since it shows that while Cloud is working with Hades, he won't go through with killing a 14 year old.
Didn't realise until just now that I had gotten both Monstro scenes. In my first playthrough I got so turned around in Monstro that I was so certain I was missing something that I came back later. In my playthrough on final mix I did it in one shot and remembered being confused over fighting with Riku. It had been so long between playthroughs that I just assumed I was misremembering, I didn't think it was actually different scenes.
This is great!! I also thought it was strange how I couldn't find one video that had all of these changes. This was a fun presentation of all the differences too!
Your awesome for putting all these together!! Great job! I've played these games so many times ( basically with every re-release) and there were still some I haven't seen so thank you! ❤
In kingdom hearts two final mix , there’s actually a scene to where sorrow and the gang meets Seifer the first time that a lot of people seemed to miss apparently .
It's so strange how they put in so much effort for these alternate scenes, some of which will probably never be seen by most players but they didn't have any alternative dialogue to account for players missing the missable, kinda out-of-the-way Pinocchio scene which introduces him to SDG before Monstro.
9:03 It's actually possible to get past Alice's kidnapping and still get this alternate cutscene. If you finish Alice's trial, but leave Wonderland before the boss fight, the game doesn't know you've already progressed this part of the story because you never sealed the keyhole. So Snow White will still replace Alice, even though Alice has already been kidnapped.
Thank you for this! As a kid I notice there were alternative scenes but Always wondered how many that it bugged me so happy to see it all after all these years
That's very interesting that they used Snow White, most likely they figured no one would ever go to the Deep Jungle before going to Wonderland, because Snow White gets captured and sealed away during the events of Birth By Sleep which takes place years before the events of Kingdom Hearts.
the alternate riku scene in monstro after he kidnaps pinocchio actually makes me sad ;c riku asking sora if he even remembers him as his best friend but sora AS riku's best friend sees very clearly that this isn't riku anymore MY HEART
I kind of hate the ending with cloud winning, especially since they're friends later. He had full intent to kill them in cold blood and they're all just friendly about it. At least when they win it's a good idea that he was still going to but sora was strong enough to stop him, but there it was literally circumstance sora lived
Cloud wasn’t going to kill Sora. In the cutscene where you lose, you see that Cloud raises his sword down before he got hit by Cerberus. Sora even looked surprised that Cloud didn’t finish him off, and let him go.
@@Latestmustace I got the sense he was supposed to be reacting cause he heard something before Cerberus pounced him. Sora would look shocked cause Cloud's about to get crushed by a 12 ft tall 3 headed abomination. I completely believe that the surprise from that beast is what saved their lives
@@JackReacts There's a solid couple of seconds before Cloud reacts to Cerberus being present. If he had heard the dog beforehand, I doubt he would've been flattened like that. He absolutely chose not to eliminate Sora in that moment, as it just wasn't in his character.

The only ones I was aware about were Leon's cutscene, the wonderland vs deep jungle differences, and partially aware of monstro, but this was very informative
I knew of about half these alternate scenes (I was blown away when I triggered Snow White instead of Alice), but the Monstro and Olympus cutscenes were a surprise. Great video and illustrates the depth and openness put into KH1 versus later titles.
There was only ever one time I witnessed an alternate scene. I recall actually skipping Wonderland and completing Deep Jungle, thereby seeing Snow White in Alice’s place. Seeing the events of Monstro take place after Sora encounters Riku on Captain Hook’s Ship is certainly jarring, was that some Heartless taking the form of Riku just to allow the events to transpire as they should’ve? I also recall never having encountered Pinocchio in Traverse Town before reaching Monstro when I played the original PS2 version, but that didn’t change anything clearly.
Why would people think the alternate Monstro cutscenes have Ansem controlling Riku's body? When I heard that I thought the alternate scenes would feature Riku in his dark outfit, and have him not speak at all.
Because of Riku's sudden cold and uncaring demeanor, and Sora saying "No, you're not Riku!" so clearly the directors want us to notice that something's changed in Riku's heart
It's subtle and it goes by quick, but you can see the obvious difference of where Riku is was looking at just before the Parasite Cage made it final appearance. Further proving which one was real and which was a fake.
Duing the alternate deep jungle, I still got Snow White's scene even after alice's trial, so she doesn't leave the world till after trickmasters demise
The Monstro differences make sense; if you get captured by Hook first, Riku acquires the power to control the Heartless, and starts his fall to Darkness before you catch up with him in Monstro. The Maleficent scene happens off screen.
Yo that’s wild seeing that Pinocchio scene with Riku saying the “puppet” could help someone who lost their heart. 😂😭The writers had this vessel thing in their pockets since kh1
During my gameplays, I only glimpsed the one where Alice is swapped by Snowwhite, which is very neat, and I am surprised they altered the cutscene in Olympus Coliseum to cut Maleficent if you already defeated her, like, they had to think things from the beginning and the end at the same time, however, I think the interactions with Riku in Monstro are messy if you go with the alternate route, they should have just made that place obligatory in order to advance in the story
A little detail I want to add about the Pot Centipede is the party members. If Donald or Goofy weren't present in the fight, they will stand still. If Aladdin wasn't present, his sword isn't visible in his hand despite the animation.
@@justineberlein5916 I found out if you cast blizzard on the grate below the stove (you can lock onto it) he isn’t able to ignite his weapons for around 90 seconds. It makes the fight absurdly easy.
Im pretty sure there are different scenes when you see pinoccio in traverse town Its in cid’s below item shop and it will depend whether you open that chest on the cabinet or not
Damn, I KNEW that something was off with Monstro, where Riku fights with you. When I was younger, I completed Monstro after Neverland. But when I replayed FM on PS4, I did it before Neverland and was like "Wait a second, I could've sworn that Riku wasn't in the boss Fight..." Thought it was just a mandela effect, but nope! It's actually like that!
I'm probably wrong, but I remember there is a Pinocchio scene in Traverse Town before getting to Monstro, and I remember it could be missed. But I'm not sure at all.
I remember as a kid thinking Monstro like, died if you beat the Parasite Cage and that White Trinity Mark was there. So I skipped it until I got White Trinities which you get for beating Riku in the hallway in Hollow Bastion. Biggest shock of my life that the scene was different but it made a lot of sense to me. It's cool too because I think unlike the Unknown that is made up of recycled clips, I'm pretty sure they voiced that original dialogue for just this bit.
Thats strange. I remember on the PS2 I once skipped Monstro until after Hollow Bastion first time. When I went to Monstro I was so sure the scenes had Riku in his black outfit and the Ansem Riku voice. I don't know if I am remembering this incorrectly or if it was a PS2-only scene, but I remember thinking how cool that was and I kept the save on my memory card. I was convinced until now.
Wow. Kingdom Hearts 1 actually factored in the nonlinear progression. I always found it weird that in Kingdom Hearts 2 that if you go to Hollow Bastion and Malificent sacrifices herself to the Nobodies, that if you go to worlds you haven't ventured and do their first storyline before the revisit storyline; Malificent still plays out her scenes verbatim. It would've been nice if they excluded her appearances or edited them out. Not even KH2 Final Mix made the fix.
I’m not positive on this but I also think, with the Snow White/Alice scene, that depending on which you get, a different villain asks “what drew the heartless to that world?” Because I remember Captain Hook saying it, not Jafar lol
I thought that Monstro scene played out differently way back when! Now I understand, i mustve gone to fight Hook first and then go through monstro; no wonder i was so confused why there was so much more Riku convos.
So, I experienced the monstro one as a kid. And I thought something was wrong with my game like it was haunted. Didn't stop me from playing it though lol
Even though the Monstro scenes before being captured are dramatic and exciting, I almost love the scenes after being captured being the primary timeline.
There's also one you missed where if you complete after defeating Trickmaster, Wonderland after Deep Jungle, when you unlock a keyhole the gang will assume it came from Deep Jungle.
@@nzonk4606 I wanted to add there's also a change in text if you show Cid the half gummi piece in Deep Jungle saying this is only a one of the two. And another change in text after defeating Trickmaster one the party members saying alright that makes two of them together after talking to Cid about that gummi piece from Deep Jungle.
I’ve done the Alice>Snow White thing several times and I actually kind of prefer the alternate scene because it gives the idea of things happening in the background that show the villains as being otherwise competent if not for our meddling. I mean, after getting to Agrabah, we beat all of the villains that have collaborated together one by one, even if they get the princesses
I was wondering about that Snow White detail. My first playthrough of Kingdom Hearts had Snow White in it, but when my sister was playing through it she had Alice. And all my repeat playthroughs had Alice. I hadn't known completing Trarzan before Wonderland was the cause of it.

I remember my different play throughs thinking things were a bit different but not really knowing for sure, so thank you for making this!
Wooooow, really? Every boss’s/enemy’s health is higher after rescuing Kairi.
I guess they gave Pat Carroll a raise for that time and negotiated her health bar arrangements
I think Leon and Sabor might be the only alternate most of us seen. at least on first playthrough. there kind of aggressive fights with NO HEAL
there kind of a skill cheek along with Island Riku
That’s true and a lot of this pretty obscure!
@@ShadyRiku in the Sabor fight any holes in the wall stay forever. the tree house has permanent stage destruction.
so I finally learned the pattern on my last playthrough of KH1 of the Riku Destiny Island fight, I think it was on every 4th hit, he does the falling on back into foot charge, which you are then able to dodge more reliably knowing it happens exactly then.
I was curious to see the differences. Thanks for making such a comprehensive video. I like that they altered them just in case someone takes these routes and they dont accidentally "resurrect" a bad guy.
I actually got the ‘Lose to Cloud’ Alternate Cutscene in my first playthrough as a kid.
I think that was probably the more "intended" scene, since it shows that while Cloud is working with Hades, he won't go through with killing a 14 year old.
I feel like most people probably end up losing to Cloud, which I have gotten that same cutscene you had.
The level of detail in this game is amazing!
"I went easy on him"
Suuuure ya did buddy, you just keep telling yourself that X-D
You forgot the scene where Riku gets control of the heartless plays as soon as Hook attacks you if you skip Monstro
wow I didn't know he had alternative scenes? But anyway thank you for your video ShadyRiku. it taught me at least something more about kingdom heart.
I HAD NO IDEA This was a thing! Wonderful catch! Excellent vid!
Alternate scene for monstro before parasite cage 2 has some unique voicelines for sora and riku, that should've been the version shown with audio.
As a kid I notice there were alternative scenes but Always wondered how many that it bugged me so happy to see it all after all these years
Great video!! I have always wondered which cutscenes changed. I knew there were some, but not this many. Especially not the entirety of Monstro!
This is so dope. I never knew the game even had alternative scenes like this
That's very interesting that they used Snow White, most likely they figured no one would ever go to the Deep Jungle before going to Wonderland, because Snow White gets captured and sealed away during the events of Birth By Sleep which takes place years before the events of Kingdom Hearts.
Great video! First time I've seen them in side-by-side comparisons! Very well done!
Thanks a lot!
the alternate riku scene in monstro after he kidnaps pinocchio actually makes me sad ;c
riku asking sora if he even remembers him as his best friend
but sora AS riku's best friend sees very clearly that this isn't riku anymore
MY HEART
I completely believe that the surprise from that beast is what saved their lives
yeah, this far from Cloud's character to be tempted to kill a kid
@@JackReacts There's a solid couple of seconds before Cloud reacts to Cerberus being present. If he had heard the dog beforehand, I doubt he would've been flattened like that. He absolutely chose not to eliminate Sora in that moment, as it just wasn't in his character.
I had NEVER seen or heard of the Monstro cutscenes before this game still has surprises 😭
The first game will always be the best and most fleshed out of all the games.
I am so hyped that youre uploading again. Ik you have been for a minute but i didnt even notice!!! Gonna pay attention now. You helped me get my platinum. Its so good to hear from you again bro!
The only ones I was aware about were Leon's cutscene, the wonderland vs deep jungle differences, and partially aware of monstro, but this was very informative
I actually never knew about the one where Snow White is in Alice’s place.
Probaly Is Canon either was intentional.
That is pretty cool. I had no idea it mattered depending on what you do first. Or if you lose a battle or not.
Shady's back with another one🔥🔥
You know it ☝🏻
I knew of about half these alternate scenes (I was blown away when I triggered Snow White instead of Alice), but the Monstro and Olympus cutscenes were a surprise. Great video and illustrates the depth and openness put into KH1 versus later titles.
To be honest, I never actually thought about leaving Coliseum before defeating Cerberus and fighting Maleficent first. That is cool.
@@emiwarble yeah, that Sora's called him stupid already
It's subtle and it goes by quick, but you can see the obvious difference of where Riku is was looking at just before the Parasite Cage made it final appearance. Further proving which one was real and which was a fake.
Cool video, never realized there were so many alternative scenes.
Fine i will replay Kingdom Hearts 1 again
7:03 I’m surprised that I don’t know that you can defeat maleficent after beat the dogs 😅
I didn't know that you could lose to Sabor the first time you fight.
I love that scene, with Sora involving Donald and Goofy being able to accomplish anything! ❤❤❤
Yo that’s wild seeing that Pinocchio scene with Riku saying the “puppet” could help someone who lost their heart. 😂😭The writers had this vessel thing in their pockets since kh1
Amazing video! You gotta do more of these
6:24 Alternate Hades cutscene for Olympus Coliseum featured on right side.
After Neverland Riku in Monstro really feels like Zexion if you think about it.
I knew about the Leon fight, kinda the cloud fight, but didnt know about any of these others, so thank you
Thank you I was always wondering why only seen that Pinocchio seen once on my first playthrough I thought I imagined it
The Snow White one is perfect if you need Cure and the Jungle King keyblade for the Trickmaster fight.
If you get the timing down you can hit back his fireballs without the guard skill, makes the fight a lot easier.
@@alexw4482 Alternatively, it's really easy to complete the prelims at Olympus Coliseum for Thunder, which trivializes Trickmaster
@@justineberlein5916 I found out if you cast blizzard on the grate below the stove (you can lock onto it) he isn’t able to ignite his weapons for around 90 seconds. It makes the fight absurdly easy.
Yeah you're supposed to complete the Monstro world before the Neverland world.
Thank you so much for making this video.
Youre welcome my friend 🙏🏻
You earned a sub based solely off your video format 👍👍👍
Im pretty sure there are different scenes when you see pinoccio in traverse town
Its in cid’s below item shop and it will depend whether you open that chest on the cabinet or not
Damn, I KNEW that something was off with Monstro, where Riku fights with you. When I was younger, I completed Monstro after Neverland. But when I replayed FM on PS4, I did it before Neverland and was like "Wait a second, I could've sworn that Riku wasn't in the boss Fight..."
Thought it was just a mandela effect, but nope! It's actually like that!
i could be wrong but i believe that there is a change in pinocchio's introduction in monstro for if you met him in cids shop in tt
Wow! I didn’t even know about that last one with Hercules and if you beat the cups in a different order. That definitely surprised me.
It's giving, meta time travel.
Great video as always 👍
Appreciate it 😀
Thats strange.
Perhabs the Riku from the alternate Monstro, is the first replica made by Vexen i don't know why it would be there, but...
True, could be 🤷🏻
no, but the whole puppet with a heart made click in my mind
Great alternative scenes from Kingdom Hearts Final Mix HD.
I’m not positive on this but I also think, with the Snow White/Alice scene, that depending on which you get, a different villain asks “what drew the heartless to that world?” Because I remember Captain Hook saying it, not Jafar lol
Omg I think you’re right haha
I thought that Monstro scene played out differently way back when! Now I understand, i mustve gone to fight Hook first and then go through monstro; no wonder i was so confused why there was so much more Riku convos.
So, I experienced the monstro one as a kid. And I thought something was wrong with my game like it was haunted. Didn't stop me from playing it though lol
Even though the Monstro scenes before being captured are dramatic and exciting, I almost love the scenes after being captured being the primary timeline.
The Parasite Cage in level looks so different. Being orange with green arms and yellow hands is so different from it's original purple.
Nice video!
Thanks 😊
There's also one you missed where if you complete after defeating Trickmaster, Wonderland after Deep Jungle, when you unlock a keyhole the gang will assume it came from Deep Jungle.
Cool, is that a custscene or just a change in text though?
@@ShadyRiku Change in text.
@@nzonk4606
I wanted to add there's also a change in text if you show Cid the half gummi piece in Deep Jungle saying this is only a one of the two.
After all this time, I never knew Snow White replaces Alice if you hadnt finished Wonderland yet!! 🤯
That's crazy but cool!
Wait what? After 20 years, we also didnt have to beat cloud?
I was wondering about that Snow White detail. My first playthrough of Kingdom Hearts had Snow White in it, but when my sister was playing through it she had Alice. And all my repeat playthroughs had Alice. I hadn't known completing Trarzan before Wonderland was the cause of it.
Gotta love detailed the first game was
