Luanda, Angola vs Abuja, Nigeria

  • Two very different cities. One is by the Atlantic Ocean, while the other is deep in the hinterlands of the Nigerian midlands. One is tropical; the other is savannah. Between them sit Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, the Congo Republic, and the DR Congo; over 500 ethnicities exist in those countries.
Both cities hold significant economic power as they are the capitals of Africa's two largest oil-producing countries. Despite the absence of a direct border between Nigeria and DR Congo, the distance between Abuja, Nigeria, and Isiro, DR Congo, is surprisingly closer than the distance between Luanda, Angola, and Isiro, DR Congo, even though Angola has a border with the DR Congo.
We will compare both cities and countries. Let us know what you think in the comment section.

As a Nigerian, Luanda is cleaner and more beautiful than Lagos. Luanda even looks better than London UK The place is not dirty and trust me many parts of Lagos is deplorable. I love Nigeria 🇳🇬 and would not ask to be from anywhere else but give props to whom props is due. Take inspiration from the Angola and improve on Nigeria

I really admire your sense of brutal honesty and ability to pinpoint everything whether its good or bad. For instance, the negatives of Luanda have been clearly highlighted here as compared to Wode Maya who did a Luanda vlog sometime ago but didn't say nothing about none of that, only showing the glitz and glamour and covering affluent regions.
With that said, Luanda in its current status has been a very resilient city. It experienced 400 years of portuguese colonialism, slavery, 14 years of war for independence, 27 years of civil war (MPLA vs UNITA) including the horrendous Halloween massacre 1992 and worst of all heavy pillaging and plundering of $24B+ by the corrupt tyrranical Dos Santos crime family for 38 years

An emergency system, applicable to any country or to anyone who has visited any of the many decent countries in the world, functions as follows:
Anyone can call them in case of an emergency with any mobile device without or without a SIM for free, and they will be there within 8 minutes. A few trucks with tanks and overhead pipes don't constitute a fire brigade or emergency system.
Nigeria, unlike its counterparts such as South Africa, Egypt, Algeria, Thailand, or Mexico, has yet to establish an emergency system or a security force that meets international standards. This is a pressing issue that needs immediate attention.

I can understand the gentleman frustration with his native Nigeria and the rest of black Africa. I only wish that he can remember that we are a conquered people. The Arabs walked all over the continent enslaving our people for 1500 years. Imagine draining Africa from its best and brightest minds and bodies for that long. Then the Europeans came and enslaved, colonized and carved up the continent like a cheap pizza. It is a miracle that we are still standing as a race. more than a billion strong. In America the natives were almost extinct. Black Africa is a mess, but still standing. It would be easy to fix all the things that are eating at us, if we can unite against the same people that now owns intercontinental ballistic missiles, Stealth warplanes, nuclear powered submarines. nukes galore, and God knows what other deadly weapons. We cannot say no to them if we are not united. We can always look at the Chinese for some inspiration that it can be done.

I acknowledge the points you've made, but regrettably, I disagree. Throughout history, stronger nations have invaded weaker ones. Many nations were invaded and slaves taken here and there; this has not stopped them from developing or reaching basic development.
I am not a fan of black people always blaming their failure on historical misfortune when we control our own countries and economies.

@@BantuCityDiaries Nobody is playing victim of history, the facts are the facts. Those nations that you said were invaded and enslaved never had anything compared with 1500 years of slavery. And it took the Europeans centuries to get to where most of them are right now. Their tribes fought for centuries against each other. European world war 1 and 2 are just the latest wars that they engaged in to reach to where they are right now. And Eastern Europe is so backwards that Luanda and Abuja might look first world than most of their cities. And aren't the Europeans tribes at it again with Russia fighting against Ukraine and Nato?
We can be proud of Africa that despite its backwardness, it liberated itself from the colonial powers. If it has not advanced, it is because the European are good at killing the leaders that try to do so. Lumumba, Sankara, etc were killed trying to do good for their people. Try to get them former colonizers to pay more for cocoa, oil, or any other natural resources, and the Embassies in the African capitals will call in your neighbors and even your immediate family and give them a suitcase full of money and they will stop whoever is trying to affect the European interests. Carved- up countries on their own cannot fight them folks.

and the city also needs to be well designed and not built as if it were a lawless slum where everyone does what they want. Europe doesn't have tall buildings but it has beautiful cities. But truely speaking is unfair to compare a city found in 15th century to a city found in 1976 which development just started 42 years ago in 1982. Again you talked about is Nigeria really the giant of Africa.been a giant don't mean you are the best in everything but you can benefit others than what other will benefit you.for in instance Nigeria is controlling 70 percent of ECOWAS gdp and 25 percent of Africa GDP.

ECOWAS boasts a combined GDP of slightly over $500 billion and a population of 413 million. Meaning, Nigeria has more people than the entire ECOWAS, and about half its GDP. Still think that is 70%?
Anyway, thanks once again for stopping by.

@@BantuCityDiariesAnd obviously your estimates are only due to current exchange rate volatility. It is a transition period for a country already so run down by economic mismanagement for decades and so rate volatility is not unexpected. When the rates go back to 1000 as it did recently or less, what then happens to your bogus claims? Also a reminder that it’s still May 2024. Drop those lens of gloom and doom you ALWAYS put up. And if you have some other resentment or unsettled scores with your country, you had better start speaking about it to tackle the real issues. Your page on Twitter seems to stoke tribal discord and you are being called out for it already.

You make a good case with the volatility issue, and I agree 100%. However, Nigeria's temporary, volatile economic trajectory has nothing to do with the points I often make.
      1. Are Nigeria's roads up to standard?
      2. Does anyone go to a government-run driving school?
      3. Do we have ambulances or emergency services?
      4. Do cattle block Abuja's main roads?
      5. Do Nigerians keep to queues?
      6. Do 90% of Nigerians have running water, if not dug boreholes?
      7. Do we have power supply? 60% of Nigerians go to bed daily without power, true or false? We are the worst in the world. Refer to the adjacent article (businessday.ng/energy/article/nigeria-ranks-top-among-countries-with-highest-power-outages-iea/).
      8. Are there more poor people in Nigeria than in Angola?
      9. Do Nigerians obtain or buy themselves a driving licence?
      10. Is there road signage across Nigerian cities?
You see, I'm not sure what kind of world Nigerians live in, but if everything I said was correct, do you feel some kind of shame for finding yourself angry over the truth? I have given you 10 points on the major areas I often talk about in Nigeria. Prove that one is incorrect; if you cannot do so, then take a mirror and look at yourself and say, 'I'm being unreasonable'.
We don't have a functional police, fire brigade, ambulance, traffic system, or a single institution that functions to the minimum standard of countries like Namibia, Botswana, Egypt, Tunisia, Thailand, Brazil, or Colombia. These are all third-world countries, too.
      Thanks for stopping by.

@@BantuCityDiaries Actually you can go on to mention an endless tirade of challenges that Nigeria grapples with since according to you it’s “all that you discuss on your channel.” Even at that, not all your points are completely true. Yes Nigeria has some world class roads, well paved with markings, lights and signs especially in the FCT you frequently mentioned. Lagos’ response to emergency is not 100 but still good enough and simple random google searches will bridge that gap in ignorance. Also your question about poverty indicts you of your negativity because one could also ask are there more rich Angolans than Nigerians? Talking about development across cities as if many other African countries have development spread across its cities except SA and a few in the North of Africa.
More specifically, I only responded to your reply to the other poster since point raised was on GDP. Good you couldn’t refute that.
You see, nothing absolutely makes me angry here. Instead it’s just a shame that it always has to be a lopsided conversation with almost nothing good to discuss of your own country when there’s a long list of Nigerias successes too. (You can choose not to see). Any rational being who sees you tenaciously condemn everything about your country soon would realize it’s you who is completely “unreasonable.” Speaking phonetics or actually, a variation of it, doesn’t embellish your strong bias and repudiation for Nigeria. Far from where it ought to be, Nigeria is still making progress. If your argument is based on the speed of that progress, that’s reasonable especially when it is approached with a mindset to use your platform to proffer solutions and strike thoughtful conversations. I ask again, can it always be gloom for your country?

    • @BantuCityDiaries
      @BantuCityDiaries  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @isaac_tee
      1. You failed to stick to the points and instead focused on me and the way I speak. Phonetics and a variation of it? How does the study of sounds and their potential variation connect to the position you are childishly fighting so hard to disqualify? It's just incredible! I am not very interested in your opinion of how I speak or approach my content; this is a no-pointer. You must be hurting; your feelings are all over the place.
      2. You have claimed that not all my points are entirely true. I'm open to a rational discussion on this, but simply stating it isn't enough. I'd appreciate it if you could provide some evidence to back it up and not waste my time retorting your shattered emotions.
      3. You claimed that Nigeria has some world-class roads. That right there is the problem. You are either dishonest, ill-equipped, or have a variant definition of world-class. I couldn't be bothered wasting my time on such nonsensical talk.
      4. You said something about my invocation of poverty (in Nigeria, I'm assuming), which could beg the question of whether there were more rich people in Angola. You have no idea what you are talking about. Your little feeling being hurt has gotten the better of you. Yes, there are more rich people in Angola than in Nigeria on average. Your shattered emotions are all over the place. Angola's GDP per capita is four times higher. Don't waste my time, please!!!
      5. You claimed that Lagos's response to emergencies is not 100%, but it is still good. This is beginning to feel like Nigeria. Please take your argumentative persona somewhere else; I have zero interest in such a dishonest portrayal. What a joke!!!
      6. You said something about other African countries having development spread across them. Again, that little feeling makes you spew whataboutism. No one claimed it either, so stick to the claims made. If you are looking for a straw man to attack, head somewhere else. I have no time for your charlatanry. Try to steel man my position instead; don't straw man them, and drop the ad hominem-it will make you come across like a fair interlocutor.
      7. You claimed I could not refute your earlier submission about GDP. I could; I agreed with the generality of the points, not the substance. Angola's GDP per capita has been higher than Nigeria's forever, or at least in the last two decades, even in Nigeria's heyday. So do Algeria, Egypt, and South Africa. In other words, the three countries ahead of Nigeria have always been richer or had fewer poor people.
      8. You were not angered, so you claimed. I am not sure about anger, but annoyed would be a better term. Still, no one insinuated otherwise. I don't care how you feel about me, and yes, you are annoyed! Your half-baked emotional wreak, sophistry, and conjecture gave you out.
      9. I'm not sure if I'm interested in the rest of the jargon you've been spewing, but I'll end the communication here. Your feelings do not interest me. Your off-point, wannabe, and wanna-sound intelligent fell woefully short. I will just let it be.
Hold tight the illusion; this is it for me.

Abuja and its greater area cover over 150 kilometres. At its furthest point, Luanda province, which you insist is Luanda, covers barely 120 kilometres from north to south (distance from Barra do Cuanza to Panguila, 119 km).
The distance from Maitama, central Abuja city, to Abaji, still in the FCT area, is 122 km. How is Luanda province bigger than the FCT? The area designated for the FCT covers a vast land area. If you were to include the greater FCT, it soaks pockets of Nasarawa, Niger, Kaduna, and Kogi states. Those alone cover over 30,000 km2.
However, in this video, we only compared Luanda to Abuja as a city. Luanda is 113 km2, and Abuja is 1,476 km2-period! What is the point of this back-and-forth?

Most of your observations about my country and the mega cities are correct. But it is as a result of failed leadership and corrupt government where the rule of law is circumvented in virtually every sphere of public life and interpersonal relationship. The northerners flout orders with violent impunity as it pertains to cattle rearing on public roads. They clash with indigenous farmers from other parts of Nigeria as a result of their reluctance to embrace modern ranching systems. They have ruled Nigeria more than any other geopolitical zone. But they have left the country worse off than they met it through embezzlement, nepotism, tribalism and religious intolerance. While their elites are stupendously rich, their poor (the Almajiris) are more in number than any other part of Nigeria. They are kept perpetually poor to be used as cannon fodder for ethno-religious attacks and violence against other tribes and Christians. In fact, Nigeria needs total overhaul, a new constitution, and a committed set of incorruptible leaders. We are the architects of our own destruction because the most qualified are never allowed the opportunity to win elections and fix Nigeria because of their religious or ethnic backgrounds. We have very good people and individuals who can chart a new and prosperous trajectory for Nigeria.

Angola mainly had a rent economy around coffee fazendas, etc. To put it simply, the system was therefore a neocolonial system which was applied in almost all the colonies in Africa. During the revolt, Angola was totally destroyed (Huambo, Benguela, Luanda, Lubango, etc.). the current cities are the fruit of the MPLA which after the war was able, thanks to China, to rebuild the country (Angola at that time being considered communist and therefore blacklisted by the West). All these skyscrapers, roads and hotels were built after 1975. The Portuguese buildings are almost all abandoned or destroyed.
