The Equalizer technically came out WAY earlier than John Wick. This movie is based on a television series from the 1980s. Denzel is perfect for this role which is very different from John Wick.
So to give some context about this movie not doing well financially. After looking it up this movie made 192 million at the box office on a 55 million budget. The first John Wick made 86 million on a 22-30 million dollar budget, so looking at these numbers, they both did extremely well at the box office. Now the Wick series has more movies at the moment, equalizer will have the 3rd one coming out this year. So in my opinion both movies have done very well for themselves. Wick gets a little more talk because of the insane actions sequences where Equalizer has suspense and intrigue to back it up.
I like the equalizer more than John Wick. Denzel just seems to be a more interesting person than the John Wick character. And the equalizer is based in the real world versus the cartoon environment of John Wick.
I think John Wick landed so well is because Keanu trained so hard to do his stunts, fight scenes, and gun handling. Denzel is the GOAT for sure, but he can't physically do what Keanu does. And the fact that they use long, uncut takes in John Wick really shows off the action.
equalizer is based on a tv series from 1985, which they do a fan fare tie into a previous movie Denzel did in 2004 called Man on Fire. production also started before John Wick. because of Equalizer they were forced to use an insane advertisement budget on John Wick to over shadow it. once you learn about his wife in the second movie, the people he hangs around and why he's a "fixer" makes sense.
And Man On Fire is a remake from a movie in the 1980s starring Scott Glenn. Scott was in Training Day as Roger and Courage Under Fire as that reporter with Denzel.
“Just launch a rocket at his b**** ass.” Man I almost died laughing 😂. I love these videos! Keep up the Seal Team breakdowns, it’s so cool watching actual operators analyze the tactics shown in one of my favorite shows 🔥.
So if you watch the making of the movie, they have the fight coordinator say how his whole aim was to not waste movement or energy. He said Denzel isn't some young guy that's going to be jumping and throwing and falling. The aim of his scenes were minimalist in complexity with maximum effectiveness. I was just like, makes sense.
Fun fact, John Wick was directed by Keanu Reeves former matrix stunt double Chad Stahelski as a passion project to explore gun fu in movies and co-directed by David Leitch who was Brad Pitt's former stunt double. Leitch went on to make Nobody and Bullet Train through their joint production company. 1:39
Chad was also stunt double of brendon lee in the crow. All scenes where you didn’t see Brendon face was all Chad including the scene where he puts make up on. He shot all scenes after Brendon death
The Equalizer was based on atv show from the 80's my dad used to watch. In that show I think the guy was British intelligence or SAS. Also, yes honey is a natural antibiotic but boiling it will probably just give you a real nice burn to deal with as well.
Finally! I have been waiting for this. You guys are the best. Great content, and unlike a lot of youtubers, you actually interract, and ask what the fans want.
Fun fact-there was n Australian (I think?) company about 15 years ago that introduced medical wound dressings impegnated in honey to promote healing. No idea if they're still available today.
In my country’s traditional medicine there are a lot of methods like that. For an example when my country was fighting the brits they were carrying a food we call kavum. Brits thought it was because we love to eat that but apperently the fungi grown on the kavum helped to fight the infection on wounds. Probably no one cares but thought some people may like to know
The movie that Abel’s referring to is White House Down, starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Fox. Other being Olympus Has Fallen, which, if I’m not mistaken, they (the guys who made it) decided to not release it around the same month as WHD thus they had to release it at a later date in terms of not competing against it. With all that aside, I’m in love with the Filipino martial arts being demonstrated by Denzel, thanks to Dan Inosanto who also trained him for the other film, Book of Eli, another epic film I do recommend. Although I would love to have you guys watch Olympus Has Fallen, you guys might find a familiar face, as Johnny Tran’s in there by the way. 😊
I love em both, they're different in my eyes. Wouldn't compare them. Also, the Equalizer was a TV show back in the 80's remember watching it as a kid :) Think the actor that starred in it was Edward Woodward.
Equalizer is another Antoine Fuqua film. Den of Thieves, Training Day, Brooklyn's Finest, Olympus Has Fallen, and Terminal List. I hope you do Brooklyn's Finest at some point and tell us if the way cops are in the film is accurate. It's my favorite cop movie.
Everyone refuses to admit that Keanu is a terrible actor. Stunts, off the charts though. What's most prolific about this film is Robert's balance of his dark and light. He highlights that a warrior submits to his darkness, to do good which balances the scales. But it comes at a cost. When Teddy says "you mark me as a sentimental man Mr. McCall..." He was unassuming to everyone because he is actually a good man doing dark deeds against dark men. 🖖🏾

"Imagine if that's your dad." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I would've liked to see a breakdown on the scene where Teddy comes to Robert's apartment. As Robert reveals to Teddy he doesn't believe he's a cop, Teddy comes back up the stairs and as he does this, Robert closes the distance and takes a tactically advantageous position. It's a pretty cool scene.
The “superhuman” quality of Green Berets and every other special operator is simply the rejection of failure and the dedication to teammates and winning. They’re all just better than the rest of us at that. It might be something in their DNA, it may be teachable, I don’t know. But they approach everything with the intent to win.
I think the point is, that very few people in the world, Spec Ops included, is not Jason Bourne. That doesn’t mean, these individuals aren’t special. Just that they are human, and very susceptible to physical damage…like every human is.

They didn’t intend for him to go Home Depot. He was supposed to meet them in the exact kind of place you suggested. Robert chose to abandon meet and go after the hostages.
What is happening is simply film distribution companies competing wit each other, trying to snuff out the competition by scheduling a release to deny the competition the opportunity to maximize their theatrical revenue.
They used to use boiled sugar too, it makes a barrier to keep oxygen from bacteria. I read a Book called Bush Medicine that talks about it . I think it was written by a missionary Doctor in Africa, and you have to change the sugar pretty often.
From working in the industry you are SPOT ON when it comes to why similar movies get made around the same time. to piggy back that, its why you see a lot of people play in military or period pieces around the same time as well. With these films they get sent to mini boot camps to learn how to look walk and talk like soldiers or knights, etc so once they get the training, they are primed for any other film being made around the same time. Tom Sizemore is a prime example, i believe he was in 3 major war films in a 12 month period. there are others as well
The fact that Keanu Reeves actually trained with Taran Butler and didn’t look like Steven Seagal shooting people was a big factor… and then all the custom TTI guns in the Sequels. Taran made out big, too… $2500 for Glocks and $7000+ for the 2011s
Best example of what sean was talking about @ 10:30 is daredevil season 1 hallway fight scene. Fighting multiple people he had to keep hitting them to keep then down while getting tired and having people rush him at the same time.

I think John Wick became/is more popular because it's more "ACTION!!!!!!!!!" The equalizer movies are more" action", with a shrug. Both Keanu and Denzel handle their roles well, but both characters are very different - yet very efficient at how they deal with their opponents. Also - for any who haven't but liked this movie, watch Denzel in "Man on Fire"
it's more popular because it's essentially the Fast and furious of brainless action movies and because they spent more money on advertising then the entire budget of the movie. they're great movies and i enjoyed them but it's still brainless entertainment.
Nice review but there was so many scenes that were definitely worthy of being reviewed! Like when mccall breaks a guys neck with his book, or when he disarms the two corrupt police officers, or when mccall fights tate fletchers character which proves difficult. Those would have been great to review!
I got lucky and watched this movie alot when it cycled onto the movie channels, loved it and I noticed that being his only gunshot fired as well. From what I saw, he had nothing against guns at all, just looks like he improvised alot. You actually see him try to take the HK off one of Teddy's mooks in the final fight in the store but Teddy shoots him. The series it's based off actually did a sorta of thing where new guns were brought in constantly, including stuff that was borderline bleeding edge at the time like the SPAS-12, Desert Eagle, and more.
Holy crap! You fellas really don’t understand the computer thingy and Google do you? The Equalizer was first by approximately FORTY YEARS. It started as a successful tv series back in the 1980’s starring Edward Woodward.
hahahaha if my rich friend fed me a bowl of water.......!! Dan...brazilian.....bilbo baggins....babayega.... that was hilarious dude! cheers guys, from an actual brazilian!
White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen are the two movies they were trying to compare. Two more movies that had a similar premise was Deep Impact and Armageddon. There's a ton of others though.
I actually heard about honey being used to help take away inflammation and infection during the medieval. When people would get shot with arrows they would break the arrow and then pull it out and then cover the wound and honey and bandage it. Of course back then people died from basically the common cold but it gave you a decent chance to survive from the infection. Because a lot of the soldiers would tip their arrows in all kinds of nasty shit so whoever got shot may not die from the initial flesh wound but you would die of some pretty terrible illness caused by a nasty infection. So honey was used a lot back then. And I guess it is still good today so go to Kentucky fried chicken and stack up on some honey in your bag lol.
If you watch the other installments of the Equalizer it fills out his back story he is para-military CIA who was USMC special forces who was trained at the “any weapon” hand to hand combat school of the USMC.
There's another connection with John Wick, actually. The song you hear around the 25:10 mark ('Before I Die Alone') is also on the John Wick 2 soundtrack, at the end, when Keanu runs from all the assassins in Central Park ;)
What's the unique concept of which you guys think one copied the other? If it's this general type of movie I would look at "Taken" with Liam Neeson as well, and this one's from 2008.
16:19 however honey being boiled has neither anti inflammatory or anti bacterial. Only honey fresh that hasn’t been heated over 110 degrees will have benefits. Honey sold in stores also carry no benefits
Would you guys be willing to watch 'Man on fire' on here? Not sure if it fits the criteria for your breakdowns, regardless, great film but is it realistic?
The bad guys didn't plan to fight him on a warehouse. They planned to lure him out onto a loading dock near water so that he had no place to hide and in the night. Denzel lured them into the warehouse uprepared. The hostages were meant to be a last resort if they had to fall back and they could get someone on the roof and hold the building.

if my rich friend fed me a bowl of water.......!!

cheers guys, from an actual brazilian!
I highly recommend the T.V. show "SIX" if you have not seen that yet. They have 2 seasons out until it was unfortunately ended.
16:19 however honey being boiled has neither anti inflammatory or anti bacterial. Only honey fresh that hasn’t been heated over 110 degrees will have benefits. Honey sold in stores also carry no benefits
Is there a way to pre order your book "better broken"?
Nothing beats the originals..
The first Equalizer, and the first John Wick..
Unmatched.
Lots of Denzel's fighting technique is FMA. An continuation of what he did in Book of Eli.
What's interesting is that, in the making of the equalizer movie. Denzel's stunt coordinator aka trainer is a navy SEAL
Love the equalizer flicks. Looking forward to the third. Hey have you guys done an episode about the movie the guardian?
Lol i can see the smirk on Tim's face "challenge accepted." Dude is awesomely nuts.
Would you guys be willing to watch 'Man on fire' on here? Not sure if it fits the criteria for your breakdowns, regardless, great film but is it realistic?
second note, tomato bisque in a bread bowl is one of my top 3 meals, tons of potassium to get me through a high labor job
Mc Call likes soup.
He basically eats soup with his old partner and only drinks tea in every flick
Under the Radar or not, there's no way I'm picking John Wick over The Equalizer. I never got on that train.
Equalizer may not have been as popular as John Wick however it’s still made enough money for them to make a part two
You gotta do "Where Eagles Dare!" with Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton.
FNG Academy is the best
Equalizer 3 is coming out soon too isn’t it?
scheduled for 9/1/23
The bad guys didn't plan to fight him on a warehouse. They planned to lure him out onto a loading dock near water so that he had no place to hide and in the night. Denzel lured them into the warehouse uprepared. The hostages were meant to be a last resort if they had to fall back and they could get someone on the roof and hold the building.
You guys should cover "Safe House" with Denzel. Good film, lots of action.
Dont forget to comment the Second Part, where they get in the gunfight during the storm.
Oh dude I loved it when that elite team is getting wiped out one by one and they start panicking.
Honey is used in medications that treat decubitus ulcers in the elderly.
You guys: "People think that Green Berets have super hero abilities and can fk up everyone in the room".
Tim Kennedy: Yes.
