- Don't buy it, you really don't need it. Let me share some of the reasons why some toiletries do not need to be bought at all. The methods of how to now buy them and still be fine!

You don't need towels, right? Air dry, quick dry/thermal underwear, or just old t-shirts will do!
Packing thin thermal underwear in luggage takes so little space and weight. The drawback is that it feels cold as you're drying out.
I am now considering using an old t-shirt to dry myself.
Daily Red Pill my parents shared the same mindset about old items such as the towel mentioned. I want to have some joy in life and don’t want to see /surround myself with old things. It’s depressing. Old towel can be used as rags

I love these videos. I already don't buy a lot of this stuff, but it's interesting to know what other people think are "necessities".
Me too I kind of live in a poverty area and here some people buy what they need...some.
Some people cant afford those things they do not need and save up just to buy them.
I do with my old towels (and they are all old) what my Mom always does. I cut out cute little patches of material I like, and sew them onto the bottom part, especially if there is fading over a certain area or something. Just kind of helps the towels through the later part of their useful life. There are all kinds of things like that you can do to make using old stuff more pleasant and appealing. A coat of paint over something old, adding something new to something old, those things make a difference.
Shampooing fewer times also saves time which can be used to build wealth.

I shower/wash my hair only twice a week. I wash up at the sink the other days.

Trying to be frugal, I bought 100 rolls of toilet paper on sale. But now I have to deal with storing 20+ cubic feet of TP. While I will eventually use them, not buying other unneeded toiletries frees up a lot of space!
I think buying in bulk is fine as long as you have the room to put it.

Good move! I always wanted to do that, myself, but I'm always afraid that my cashier will be a 10/10, #hawt, and judge-mental. Normally, I wouldn't care what people think, but if she fine I'm in trouble. So I get small packs of toilet paper because I don't want possible attractive cashiers thinking that my bowels leak profusely...which they do anyway.
Get a butt gun (aka bidet sprayer) and you will not need TP. You can buy them from home improvement stores and they just attach to the water supply for the toilet. It really is a great investment.
In terms of toiletries for women, a menstrual cup will save a tremendous amount of money. It is also fantastic for the environment and very easy to travel with.
I have no experience in this. I guess that sounds ... interesting?

Naomi Talking Money bruh. Pads and tampons are literally the most expensive toiletries I buy. And I can’t be frugal about it coz it’s uncontrollable and happens every month. Also my flow is pretty heavy so I always need the super plus which are also the most expensive. Other alternatives I’ve seen are always super inconvenient or just illogical. Did u know reusable cloth pads were a thing? I didn’t. I’m a student athlete, balancing working and going to school at the same time and obviously my sport as well so I don’t hav Time to be fidgeting with period contractions despite the amount of money they save. I need to do more research on the diva cup to see if it’s a better alternative🤔
There are alternatives like the Moon cup if Diva is too uncomfortable. Just don't use it when you go camping apparently. Also, most conventional pads and tampons contain harmful chemicals so switching to a menstrual cup is probably a good idea. Even when compared to organic pads and tampons, it's more cost effective and reduces waste. I just have to try one to see if it works out for me. The initial cost is still around $40+.

I like these videos. My towels are four years old. They still look ok.
Towels seem to last forever.
I purchased good quality towels over 20 years ago, and they are lasting longer and looking better than cheap towels that are not as old. My 20 yo towels are still beautifully plush and soft.
As long as they're washed regularly (weekly) then who cares what they look like.

Mine are over 10 years old and they look like new. Unless you have only one towel, I don't see how they can get worn out all that fast.
I so relate to buying new because it was ugly. I keep things until they fall apart. He he.

A friend mentioned that my furniture was getting old, and I deserve new furniture. I am thinking, " well it is comfortable. I really like to pay cash for almost everything. We are completely debt free.
Lol... that is a dangerous way of thinking and not appreciating when people want you to buy things, lol. Anyhow, you could always just clean it up, patch it, etc to renew it.
I think many people go into debt because they feel they deserve it. If we want to stay debt free and bulid reserves, we have to save up for these items.
My parent kept appliances until they caught on fire. They'd then try to fix them and be unsuccessful. Finally, they'd put em on the curb. They'd be gone in 30 minutes...as long as it wasn't yet another toaster oven.

The line is when it become so extreme that the savings is much less than what you time is worth doing it. Extreme cheapskates may have the time value not calculated correctly in their minds.

You think so? I don't think so. There are 1000 items I can list that you don't need and if you went and bought all of these $5 items, it wouldn't do well.
The towels- we have the worn, icky-looking but useable sets for our family, and we have a pristine, lovely, beautiful set we lay out for overnight guests on the rare occasion we have them (holidays and such) or for 'fancy' guests. I am a woman with long, REALLY thick hair that is a pain to clean, and I have found cutting back shampooing has not only made my life easier (saves time and product), my hair is much healthier. The one area I run into a problem- work outs. I don't want to wash 5 times a week anymore, but I can't go around gross and smelly, either, if I hit the workouts hard and frequently. I recently read a suggestion to rinse your hair and scalp, then simply condition. I have done this the past few weeks (on top of washing 2-3xs a week), and so far, so good. Honestly, I don't notice a difference from a total cleaning when I simply rinse and condition after sweaty workouts.
Lol... icky-looking? I would just think well worn. To me it isn't icky... just worn, lol. Yeah, it's good to make guests feel invited with new sheets for them as that makes it look more clean.
Agree with the rinsing part even after work outs. Yup, cant shampoo every time after one indeed!
A little pre-cursor to those with greasy hair, you can use BABY POWDER to help train your hair to be less greasy during the transition period. Washing your hair everyday is UNHEALTHY & EXPENSIVE.

I suppose if you airbnb out your place you should keep a toiletry tote and bring that into the shower with you like in the dorms.

On bath towels, I bought, still buy towels when I redecorate or move. Now I know when it is time to do laundry when the avocado green towels are on the top of the linen closet. Pick a color, any color I have towels in that color. Another habit (good or bad, you decide) I change out my bed spreads, duvets and curtains when the seasons change. This not only brightens my mood, but also the bed linens and curtains last a lot longer. If you can't imagine avocado green fabric or appliances, ask your Grandparents what color appliances they had. For my Grandparents it was turquoise and harvest gold. Rocking those 1950's and 1970's themes!
Lol... color is subjective so I guess you can have any color you want. But wow, you have a lot of towels and linen!
it was many years after my Mom died when I was 11 years old. Just before my 18th birthday, I located her diary and she listed everything a young woman would need to set up housekeeping. She said at least 8 sets of linens, sheets, towels, blankets, etc per bed. My first home had 4 full bedrooms and 5 1/2 bathrooms. 3 sets of every day dishes and at least six sets of fine China, based on season/holiday. I followed her list to the T.
Men w beards tend to clog there sinks when trimming up. I have to shave in the shower w out the shower running. Less clean up, and shower after (all my hair goes down as I shower). I use a suction cup clear hook (.50 cents) and a cheap stand mirror from Christmas Tree Shop that's a dollar. Break it every year (only once). For the price pt and my method of shaving. Saves me time from not taking the sink apart, vacuuming around my sink every time I shave. It's a win / win for me.
I agree. Seriously, there is so much stuff we can still use/wear which doesn't need to be thrown out. I remember back in the day, no one renovated their house top to bottom. No only do you save your wallet but you save the planet.
Only renovate when it's about to fall off? Lol XD. People are obsessed with things looking brand new somehow. OLD gives it character! =D

Sorry... can't help myself.... RE the "old" towel. Indeed it is still very usable. No argument, and I am in complete agreement to keep using it until it no longer functions well enough. I would add that replacing a bath towel is not a $2 trxn -- it is more like $10 per bath towel. So how do you keep them in good working order? You repair the edges when they start to fray. I do this all the time -- just trim up any threads that are coming loose, and then zig-zag the edges with the sewing machine you already own. You will easily double the life of the towel. (And I do the same with the "rags" in the rag-bag -- they last a long time, too.)
Interesting. For those that own a sewing machine. XD Or you can just hand sew too.

I used to wash my hair everyday, shampoo and conditioner. Now I wash my hair like every two weeks and I have very fine straight hair so it shows oil easily but eventually my hair has stopped being so oily so this does work!! It just takes time
I’d say it takes 1-2 months to adjust. Still clean but uses 15x less shampoo/conditioner

Not true. But Californians turn off the shower when lathering because we care about the fact we're in a drought. I mean, we're still currently having our biggest fire ever. I use lush beach towels for my shower and I've had these for at least 15 years and since you are clean when you use them to dry yourself off, they do not get dirty, I just drape them on my vanity chair to dry daily and keep using them over and over again. I do NOT wash them per one use like my family and I used to do. It's the washing and drying that wears them out plus incurs additional cost in machinery, detergent and electricity.
People generally use far too much soap, shampoo, and toothpaste (especially Toothpaste) than is necessary. Forget rinse and repeat, unnecessary. Hand soap really just softens the water, it's the action of scrubbing under running water that washes germs from the hands. Less than 1/10 of the toothpaste that people load onto their brush is needed- just a tiny dab is adequate.
Exactly. Using the right amount to do the job is usually a lot less than what they want you to believe.
Rinse and repeat.... and buy twice as much lol just tricky marketing. Laundry detergent tells you to use too much too.
I use an aerating soap pump that makes it come out foamy. I add a couple tablespoons of soap and the rest is water- I mix it and then use that for soap - works great and lasts forever.
Clever, never heard of aerating soap pumps.

This also allows me to buy higher quality shampoo that doesn't dry out my scalp or hair.
I like living minimalistically and only buying things on sale that you need 100%.
Knowing what you really need depends on your assumed standard of living. Some people have high standards and say they NEED things others do not.

People talk about how “everyone is going to end up spending more with a credit card” and here you see someone who goes out of his way and creates “methods” to AVOID buying things. That’s what I hate about the anti credit card argument. People who are looking for an excuse to buy things will spend more with a credit card, but there are many people who are doing the exact opposite. They’re looking for excuses not to buy things or to save money overall on what they buy. Off topic, but I thought I’d comment .
Statistically those rule of thumb is probably true. But given a population of people, I'm guess a good 5%+ of the people can use credit cards well to their advantage.
I agree and disagree. I think the larger problem is not who can and cannot handle credit cards, but rather who knows how and how not to. When saying most people should avoid credit cards altogether, I feel as though people make the claim that most people are addicts. While many people are addicts, I think most people are just ignorant. People should start budgeting their money and knowing how much money to spend before they walk into stores, but most people don't do that for one reason or another. If people were trained to handle their money, most people could handle credit cards without any problems. A huge issue I think is our education system. We're not taught how to handle money in public schools and thus have to learn on our own when we get our first paycheck. In that kind of world, a credit card lets people not worry about their problems until their statement comes at the end of the month.

If they trained kids really well in the public education system to do what you're saying and be a well-informed, capable financial citizen, then the richest 2% would have a lot more trouble robbing the world blind. The US-Church School Systems has had an agenda from its formation to keep sheeple-izing and soul-slashing and do its best to calm the masses and keep everyone as stupid and obedient as possible. That is why most people are morons, unless they had a lucky break that helped them learn a lot outside the system.

I agree with you about the shirt. I often find lots of useful free info on youtube (eg dr jason fung) and they give enough info to implement the plan. I will then buy their book as a sign of appreciation for what they have taught me for free and the benefits i have received (often a lot more than the price of the book).

The New England states are in US in the eastern coast. The older people certainly do follow that rule here. They pride themselves on wasting nothing. I am 15 years old and am very frugal. If I don't have to spend a penny I won't. I like your channel for many reasons but especially for your common sense lifestyle.

Randomly, I'm from New England and I had a similar experience. Don't sweat it, people from California mostly don't know NE exists. They're literally clueless about the geography except for NYC and Florida. It is SO different here dude; like culture-shock different. I kinda love it though, so I'm staying. Also, my parents took the east coast so, by default I'm taking this one. :D

Shaving in the shower! I plug the tub while I am in there doing the initial soaping, I turn off the water to save it. I then use the collected water in the tub to shave my legs, then turn the water back on when I am ready to rinse.

Unfortunately if you style your hair, shampooing daily is generally a must. If I didn't shampoo my hair after using product/hairspray then my hair would get insanely greasy/dirty. But then again, if you're not wanting to buy shampoo you probably don't want to buy hair product too.
You could minimize usage of product and get a style that doesn't require as much. But that requires change. Change is difficult for most.
I am considering getting a mirror in the shower now. That would be useful. I get annoyed when I have to get back in the shower to get any spots I missed.
For what spots? Oh well, trying to get you to NOT buy it, lol.

Personally , I bought your T-shirt to use as a concrete reminder of my financial goals for myself, and I bought a couple to give as gifts to other, similarly-minded friends who believe in infinite vacation as a life goal.
Incidentally, they're good shirts. Good value for the money.
I think you could have gone a lot further on the toiletries...almost any lotion or potion you find in a bathroom has a low-cost alternative that can be made from simple kitchen ingredients. The only thing I wouldn't frugalize is toothpaste, and that's because dental bills incurred from poor quality dental hygiene items that damage your teeth cost way more than a tube of Colgate.

I read through some of the toothpaste recopies. It could be done but then it seems you need some ingredients for cavity prevention.
BeatTheBush yeah, I wouldn't recommend DIY toothpaste...which is often simply baking soda .... I tried a baking soda toothpaste ( Tom's of Maine) once. I only used it two weeks and it left me with a cavity. People definitely need fluoridated toothpaste. But you can make your own mouthwash, moisturizer, exfoliant, conditioner, shampoo, etc from kitchen items pretty easily.
You don't need to make your own toothpaste. All you use is a little dimple anyway, so they last a really long time!
There only one thing my family use in this video and that is Shampoo. We don't buy those cleaning thing for shower even though there mildew and mold and fungi with germ lining the shower walls. If you ever watch the show Southern Justice whenever they go inside the houses. That's our house.

Make yourself a mixture of cup of vinegar plus cup of dawn. Pour it in a dollar tree scrubber and SCRUB.
If your shower and tub is really gross, you need to do it daily for a week or two. Leave the little scrubber in the shower and use it.
Its cheap enough and your labor is free. Hope this helps you.
The mildew and such... keep a brush in your shower, do a 10 second scrub once in a while. Done.

I never buy toiletries or towels and especially shampoo!! I use my towels until its ragged.. wash my hair once a week - shampoo lasts forever.

Totally disagree with the no shampoo. It really depends on the person. I've tried it for a month and my hair did not adapt.
Using a safety razor has saved me tons of money. Plus, less plastic is better for the environment
I agree but I did try a safety razor. It was too slow and too bulky for me.
I have thick Asian hair and a lot of it. I tried no poo for more than a month, it just didn't work for me. I do find that the more often I use shampoo, the quicker my hair gets greasy and my scalps get itchy. On another hand, I almost never use shampoo with my daughter, and just use warm water and give her a head massage instead. You really can't tell besides the fact that her hair doesn't smell like artificial fregrants. The only time her hair gets greasy is about 2-3 days after her granny washes her hair with shampoo.
Music/Radio in the shower: My husband uses my daughter's sand bucket to listen to podcasts. Put the phone in the bucket, the bucket amplifies the volume enough to hear through the shower. :-)

What I have done my entire life (or at least as long as I can remember) is when I go to buy something, I ask myself, "do I have something that will work instead?" Almost always I do. Rarely do I have to buy the item I thought I needed, just get creative and use what you already have. Now if I could just get my husband to do the same thing lol! Actually I need to not be so frugal. I totally agree. I mainly hire kids to do yard work etc that makes me hurt for days when I do it myself. Trying to find a kid that wants to work these days is a job in itself! I think I'm going to just hire a lawn service.

I just spent $10 on mascara. And then I talked myself out of a $10 eyeliner. I used to spend $60 for these items at Sephora. And I think my biggest spree at Sephora was $1200. I did the same amount at Agent Provocateur!

Probably but it's not as comfortable.
I mean, hasn't everyone had to make-shift bathe in a public sink, just a little bit, at one point in their lives? But ya wouldn't wanna make a habit of it. I feel like having to do that kind of thing is what one is trying to avoid in being frugal.
Re the shower cleaner (automated)... all it does is spray cleaner on the shower walls and floor. Trouble is this" The next time you turn on the shower, you will NOT be washing off all that cleaner because it sprays cleaner where the shower head does NOT spray water. Plus, you turn the shower on and you end up standing in the cleaner in the shower. I had one. DO NOT BUY THIS.
Lol... yeah, you have to probably let it run a while before jumping in. Or use a shower head on a hose and wash everything down first. I think maybe that is why I don't seem them at the stores anymore.

Yup. I have done a lot of DIY videos all grouped in a playlist. I do a lot of work myself so that is a good way to minimize the cost.

Eyeliner... My wife and I have needed a new eyeliner for a while. And it has waited. And waited. And waited. Trying to buy our freedom instead of stuff.
Why would husband and wife both need eyeliner? Do think about living life a bit now too. It's a balance and not depriving yourself of every little thing.
