I too am a veteran, 76, and left with some mobility issues after a concussion a few years back. Spend a lot of time in bed looking for such interesting stories, when I can shuffle out to the bathroom, kitchen & back deck where I can still do some container gardening, celebrating tomatoes, cukes & green beans. It ain't much after an active life but it's what I got, so try to enjoy it, though chronic pain further impairs movement & a lot of discomfort. Always hoping for any level of improvement no matter how small or infrequent.

Joseph Merrick’s tragic tale never fails to make me feel such sorrow and empathy for the poor man. The way he was subjected to disgust and judgement is despicable. The person who stole his life savings and left him stranded, homeless and penniless in the lowlands of Europe was a heartless and cruel person.
I can’t believe his bones still haven’t been laid to rest. Hearing that his skeleton is still on display at the Royal London Hospital makes me so angry. Can they not just make a mould of his bones and give him a respectful burial?

Reminds me of the part in the Lynch film when the nurse, Mothershead, yells at Treves that he’s just making a spectacle of him again, no different to how he was treated as a sideshow performer. She was right. Part of me is grateful that he was able to spend his last days with some small ounce of dignity and comfort in the hospital, but Treves’ motivations were purely out of personal benefit, not out of true concern for Joseph or his safety. He wanted to be remembered as the doctor that found the elephant man, he knew he was incurable and that he would be treated as a specimen, not a man.

Mr. Merricks life story breaks my heart. Why are some people seemingly born to suffer like this? To think of him trying to earn a wage, to think of him never being held or caressed after he lost his mom, and later thinking of him just trying to figure out a way to sleep and breathe at the same time. I wish I could go back in time and have him as a friend, and to offer support as well.

It really is heartbreaking when you think about Mr. Merrick's life. His suffering was so intense, yet he showed incredible resilience in the face of such hardship. It's a painful reality that many people, like him, are born into circumstances that are beyond their control. But do you think there's a way we can help shift this narrative, not just for individuals like him, but for anyone who feels trapped in a situation of suffering? Could we, as a society, do more to provide that kind of support he desperately needed?

When researching for your report, did you run across the description of the "bed" that was made for Mr. Merrick at the London? It was described as being a sofa-type article, contoured to fit his body, to better accommodate his need to sleep sitting up. It's a missing part of the story that would seem to disprove absolutely the "he tried to lie down to sleep like a normal person" theory about his final moments -- and lead more to the conclusion that his heavy head, the lumpy and painful soles of his feet, and the general and severe weakening of his body just culminated one day in an attempt to get out of "bed" where he lost his balance and toppled backwards.

A certain group of women are known to cry woe women the most but crap on other women when they get just a chance to play with the big boys or even when favored... *mhmm* But thats most humans tbh. Their egos making them ultimate pick me's of the world but by default admittedly. Soon as a people(or person) gets ahead they become or show they are like their oppressor or bully or whatever. Not coming at you personally Ijs its hard to care until most women genuinely and not just conveniently care about and stop being hypocrites towards one another and even the men we condemn yet mimic. Now would be a great time but we're still failing because of our egos.

Yes, he is resting in peace. I think it's extremely unlikely that God exists but with all the violence, pain and suffering that religion causes, it's nice to see that sometimes it does make peoples life's more bearable.
      Peace.
