Your diagrams make all of the difference. Like a university textbook you understand that they are needed and you take the time to make them. This is the best quality video I’ve seen on fret work and I bookmarked dozens.

Both parts 1 and 2 should win awards for best how-to documentaries. Camera work, illustrations, editing and content were excellent. Thank you Sir for the best two documentaries on fret work, ever! Also impressed by the respectful handling of your customer's guitar. How about acoustic repair video?

While I do agree totally with your comment, I'd had also liked to have seen him address a single high fret first to show how it is tended to before moving on to using the sanding block to level them all.

@@normanbyrne9868 You can purchase a tool from StewMac called a fret kisser (not cheap though!). Allows you to easily level one individual fret and without taking off the strings....

Duncan, today I dressed my frets on a new ES-335 and I'm am so blown away and beyond extremely happy. For years I have struggled with getting my frets correct, and have not had any luck with any of the guitar luthiers either. I like my action very low, and finally I a system so well explained by you is getting me the fretboard action I have always strived for. Not only is the action where I want it, but the guitars tone, volume and sustain has improved tremendously. My ES-335 has the action of my '65 SG. Thank you so much for providing an "excellent" demonstration on this technique that has eluded me for decades. I hope you provide more videos in the future. Articulate, concise, and to the point - perfect!

BILL GRUBBS, P.E. well done with your guitar mate - i'm so glad you found some tips in these videos to help you get good results - and these es335's are beautiful guitars and deserve a lovely fret job, so good on ya and thank you so much for watching :) ... remember as well bill, there is nothing magical in doing these jobs - so the next thing you want to do to your guitar just think about it logically step by step - "what is the problem ... what are the possible solutions?" ... a bit of time on youtube and your own common sense will usually get you close to the answer - I hate this conception that working on guitars is some great mystical secret prevails ... it's really not the case ... just use your best judgement mixed with a little research and practice on a cheap guitar - you'll find you can do most things that you need to :)

Duncan, that has to be one of THE best instructional videos I have ever seen! I've done my own setups and maintenance for years. I've re-crowned frets and such here and there, but I've always shied away from fret levelling and gone to a pro. I have one guitar that has quite a few uneven frets, so I'm going to order myself a levelling beam and give it a shot. I have all the other tools, including the slotted straight edge, so the beam and some abrasive for it should be all that I need.
Many thanks for all the advice sir! You're a great teacher.

Let's don't get carried away, Julian. I also think the videos are dan good, but there are a few things you might want to consider before spending your money on tools and things.
Stewart-MacDonald (aka Stew Mac) has every tool you could need and probably a video to show you how. And, even if you don't buy their tools- which are expensive- you will see different ways professional luthiers do thons and how.
I'm not knocking Duncan. He's done a great job with his videos. But there is more than one way to skin this cat.

Duncan, I very much appreciate your clear, and easy-to-understand, step-by-step instructional video. While I'm merely a rookie cigar box guitar builder (and not even a player), I very much want to make my guitars as nicely-done as possible, and a pleasure to play for those who do play -- even though we know that CBG's are crude folk instruments. So, your instruction on leveling and crowning the frets has helped me a whole lot. Thank you!

I like your videos, Duncan, you explain things very well and you keep them simple. A little advice though, anytime you detach a bolt on neck from a guitar you're working on, clean out the neck pocket on the bottom and the sides, make sure it is free of debris, production stickers, paint blobs and paint streaks. Also fill in those paint hook holes, with either a good quality wood putty (I prefer JB Weld KwikWood, it's easy to work with, dries fast, and is rock solid) or the proper size dowel trimmed and glued in. Those things are not needed after a guitar leaves the factory, they are there to attach the hooks to move the bodies along the assembly line, and they create voids that take away from the sound quality of the guitar, and also check for them on the neck contact point and fill those in too. Sand the neck pocket and the neck contact point smooth to the bare wood. Wood to wood contact is important for sound quality. Best wishes on your endeavors! :) :)

It should be fairly obvious that any kind if bow, back or relief, should be removed before grinding on the frets.
How does one come to conclude his frets need any kind of work if the neck isn't straight when evaluating it?

Thanks so much for taking the time to put together these 2 videos in an utterly coherent and logical manner. The diagrams are fantastic, and you struck the perfect balance of not spending too much time unnecessarily on any one portion, while spending enough time on parts where it matters. I'm just about to start my first fret leveling job and I've been reading and watching everything I can find on the topic. As everyone else is saying, this is a great pair of instructional videos. Thank you for explaining not just how, but also why. I’m learning now and this was perfect for me. I have watched many videos on the subject and you just put together many tips I learned elsewhere but didn’t completely understand. I would have loved to have seen a video of the set up on this guitar to complete the repair, if you made one, I can’t find it. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and skill.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to video your excellent work! Like others have said this is the best instructional video on any subject I have ever watched on TH-cam. Now I know why Fret leveling, crowning and polishing a fretboard is so expensive?! Many thanks once again and keep up the fantastic work!

I would expect a neck which has severe fret wear to need this much work but it amazes me how this neck, with no blatantly obvious signs, still needs significant work. I know my 10 year old acoustic needs this job, but now I am worried about what I will find if I go and check my 3 year old high end Fender Jaguar.... atleast I'll know how to do the job! Very thankful for these 2 videos!

Someone had removed the old frets and installed new ones. But apparently didn't level and crown them after installing the new frets.

Thanks for these videos. You did a great job of breaking the whole job down in a way I could understand. Got a ~$200 pawn shop Squier that's got some frets in need of some love and she's a bit too budget to really be worth paying someone else to do the job for me. After watching this I feel pretty confident that I can get it done.

Awesome videos! Detailed cohesive description of a detailed process. Illustrations were very helpful for the microscopic parts. Kudos for whatever it's worth.

Thank you for these videos.you confirmed and clarified a few things for me and it gave me the confidence to continue with trying to get a buzz-free Strat neck.Great little tricks for leveling and crowning and getting a "fall away". I wasted a lot of money paying self professed wanna-be luthiers!! I hope a lot of guitar players watch your videos. Even if one does not plan to do the work I feel it is extremely important to know why . Guys it will save you a lot of frustration and help you detect the B.S. being sold to you!! Thanks again Duncan.

Good advice on having some patience for sanding and polishing through the grit stages. Don't hurry! Things turn out nice when you take the time. just put on another record rub it down. Nice work Duncan!
