Steve, I love the way you have de-emphasized the leveraging effect of the LEFT ARM. The physics of the two-lever pendulum only make real sense when the RIGHT FOREARM is defined as the primary lever in the system, and the two-lever analysis is focused on the release/impact zone. This can be shown with relentless logic, and much of the last 10 years of biomechanical research into the swing is gradually going further and further from the mark. The fact that Mike Austin was able to understand this intuitively is quite amazing. God bless you in your work, and send me an email sometime, I think we would have a great conversation.

I teach high performance tennis and it is interesting that for power serves we also teach a 90-90-90 arm position prior to the "power loop" around the head. I started golf almost a year ago was just working on driver swing last night at my weekly lesson. I had a brief relapse where my driving fell apart and I was coincidentally coached to get my right elbow in the 90 degree position and holding it at that angle during the downswing. Suddenly, I regained my hip rotation tempo and good contact.
Found this video very helpful and will start working on it tomorrow.

I just started using the flying elbow technique recently. It feels totally natural to me, but seems to be discouraged by most trainers. So often I'm told to keep my elbows together as if holding a ball between them throughout the swing. I think this is bad advice. Your description of the 90 90 90 rule coincides with my flying elbow, show my letting the elbow fly and then bringing it back in at the start of the downswing, I've gotten both Club head speed and Club shallowing in one move. You're the first I've seen to teach a method which works exceptionally well for me. Thank you.

The best image for me is at 10:33. I realized in making videos of my swing that my trail side was not rotating down but stopping at slightly below a shoulder level position. The only way to get the club to the ball from there was to stand up (early extend), absolutely killing the clubhead speed. I think there were two reasons for my rotation to stop there - upper body tightness in the muscles, and fear that my club is going to crash into the ground behind the ball. Have been working hard to rotate the trail side down like you do and it's improving distance and consistency tremendously. Thank you.

Thanks again Steve, this throwing from the top has had me intimidated but this last week I've had an "aha" moment. The feeling of throwing the club behind me makes the clubhead travel right along the arc and in the slot. I've hitting it flush with a great deal more consistency and I am getting marks on my iron right in the middle of the club face, the sound of my irons are pure. I repeat myself but there is no element of what you teach which is optional. Brilliant once again!

Will definitely try that to add a bit more speed to my swing. Also noticed you move you feet quite a bit during both the takeaway and the actual swing. This is pretty much contrary to what everyone else preaches. But your results speak for themselves. You are outdriving many pros in their prime. I have already purchased your program but like many other people, I got lured away by promises of quick and easy fixes.🙄. I’m 62 and only started playing in 2018. I very much doubt I’ll ever hit it 300 yards but an extra 20 or 30 would be great. Thanks again. To longer and straighter drives…🏌️‍♂️⛳️

What I realized when buying and using one of those short weighted Vardon grip trainers a dozen or so years ago while also completely retooling my swing with Hogan’s book was that he gripped the club in the air with bent elbows and let it hang and swing his hands to his body before sitting down backwards using the cantilevered club mass as a counter balance to ground it resulting in bias back on the heels at static address but perfect balance on the balls of the feet at impact! Letting the club head swing in gave him (and now me) the feedback needed to get and stay in balance which brings the club head mass back on a path which makes it easy to stay in balance, but only to the point were the club head mass can swing freely without hitting the ground (i.e., wedges and irons).
Hybrids, Fairway clubs and Driver are designed with long shafts to increase the length of the lever arm but will hit the ground before swinging in and finding balance like a pendulum with gravity. That makes it more difficult to set-up in a way that allows the body to stay in balance. Where swinging an iron just a matter of using the hands like the hinge on a gate to whip the club around the hand the Driver swing where hands must be extended out with the club head not in static pendulum balance with gravity at address becomes an exercise quite simple in concept to the Olympic hammer toss in which the athlete spins around on their heels holding a weight on the end of a chain them releases it at a point in the swing arc where it flies straight on a tangent to the arc on a straight line.
The difference in iron vs any club that can’t swing down into balance with gravity is the need to suspend it out of balance with the arms at address and while swinging it around the body keeping body mass biased more on heels than balls of feet or toes to avoid having the body pulled off balance forward to ball and target. The problem of balance is exacerbated in the finish at the point both hand fully release their radial deviation 👍 thumb up lag and max out thumb down ulnar deviation 👎🏼 which is the point the momentum of the toe of the club, twisting shaft and hands causes the hand to turn over. During the change from radial to ulnar deviation the club mass accelerates. In the conventional swing this happens AFTER the ball has flown off the face with makes very little sense. Why not capture that burst of acceleration before impact?
A few golfers did in fact learn how to do that: Harry Frankenberg (aka Count Yogi), Ben Hogan (who I suspect saw and copied Frankenberg who was a trick shot side show at PGA events from the 1930s - 1980s) and Moe Norman. All three of them were known for their uncanny ability to hit dead straight shots which they did by changing the timing of when the club forces pulled the hands into maxed out ulnar deviation. At that point if the hands are in the Vardon or Nicklaus interlaced version the wrist lock. If that wrist lock occurs just as the face comes square with the target Newton’s laws will cause the compressed ball to release off the face like a speeding bullet with much greater velocity than the conventional sweeping action. Hogan literally “hammered down” at the ball in the last foot or so of the swing arc before impact with that same wrist action seen in the waggle of the club he did in his pre shot routine. I realize that when working through his book but didn’t fully understand the cause and effect and how to predictably control it until a year later when coming across a story about Frankenberg in the George Peper’s book “The Secret of Golf” and challenging myself to master Count Yogi’s unconventional swing style.
The position of the wrists at the point the ball releases is different in the swing styles of Frankenberg, Norman and Hogan but the thing all three have in common is that their wrists lock down in full maxed out deviation just as: 1) face squares to target, and; 2) ball releases off the face. Coordinating that is easier to do with wedges and irons hanging in balance with hands under and inside the fulcrum of the left shoulder because the hands swing the shaft like the hinge on a door down into the ball. Having the arms extended out in front of the shoulder fulcrum point makes it more difficult, but not impossible to control when and how fast the club force is allowed to pull the right wrist straight which is actually the side effect action of the golfer hammering the hands thumbs down at the INSIDE OF THE BALL WITH AN OPEN TO TARGET CLUB FACE.
The “Hogan waggle” from radial deviation to ulnar deviation changes the face angle 45° with just a snap of the wrist which is why the aim point on the ball changes from back of ball to inside of center and why the face must be open. The open face actually hits the ball squarely in the inside path pointing to the right of the target and then the face rotates towards the target as the ball is compressing and when the wrists lock with face square to target the compressed ball flies off of it, decompressing and accelerating off the face much more than if just picked up and released with a conventional swing. Adding that “hammer” action to my swing added about 50 yards to my drives and more loft, spin and ‘drop and stop’ action on my approach shots with irons.
The caveat is understanding that in full ulnar deviation the momentum of the toe will twist shaft and hands forcing them to turn over and create snap hooks if the ball is still decompressing off the face when they turn over. The solution to that is to adjust swing path and face angle to change the number of degrees of face rotates while the ball is on it compressing and releasing. That is why Hogan closed his stance for the longer clubs. That triggers the whipping action of club around hands earlier in the downswing when hands are passing the back leg. Hogan also opened stance for shorter shafts which moves the trigger point forward toward the ball, the position of which he kept constant an inch behind his front heel. Current convention is to keep stance parallel and move ball to match club length.
It is very interesting cause and effect and a much more efficient use of gravity and momentum in a golf swing but very few seem to have discovered it and used it effectively.

I gotta try the flying rt elbow

  • @gustavogarciaswengel8679

The right elbow extension, in addition to adding distance, allows the right hand to give directional control of ball, plus eliminates the duck hook. Which is probably why Ben Hogan wrote "As far as applying power goes, I wish I had three right hands!”

Liked your reply as yes this is true, and if I may add to that, I tell my students, one must be in the 'skip a rock' posture, PLUS note the absence of the golf ball for a nano second after contact while that dual arm extension denotes the target line direction.

very clearly explained thanks. I like some of your ideas. It's incredibly frustrating trying to find the right youtuber to follow regarding swing. There seem to be such massive contradictions between methods.. the stack and tilt method for instance seems to contradict everything you say..

I couldn't agree with you more. It is very confusing watching more than you golf swing instructor on TH-cam because they do conflict.

Superb Video - what I would have liked to see, is a comparison / exaggeration of the flying right elbow (i.e. more) and it's impact on clubhead speed with Trackman, vs the conventional 90-90-90 clubhead speed - More specifically is how much clubhead speed / smash factor is lost with a major flying elbow or is just the direction and angle of attack impacted etc.

Steve, this video really helped me. It made me really coil (a full swing) and including using my wrists to get to the 90-90-90 position. Do you ever think of pushing your hands behind (to continue the coil of your swing) your head at the top of the swing? Thanks, Brad

Considering that is where all the true power comes from, watch Zen Golf and he explains it perfectly. It all starts with footwork and winds up through the body..

At some point I wish that you would explain how the footwork plays into gaining distance and feeling this throw motion. Your feet are all over the place during the swing. I can't stop watching them. They look like they're going 10 different directions all at the same time. Crazy good.

    Mr. Pratt,
Thank you so much for the simplification of the right arms' use in the swing. I had a bowling coach (yes at one time l had aspirations of being on that tour) who once told me if doesn't feel natural you're probably doing it wrong. I jumped up and started working on this lesson and immediately got effortless results. Wish l could come see you. Have to wait for covid however. Thanks again.

Examples like Mathew Wolfe or DJ demonstrate extremes no amatuer will ever achieve. Rahm hits it from 3/4 which is much more realistic for am's particularly Seniors.
I am waiting for the breakdown of that move as it is one I could probably benefit from. I know one key is his sweet spot contact which is a distance "must". I believe you loose 10% or more distance hitting it off the sweet spot so no matter how wide or long you get you can only swing to a point that allows you to maximize center face contact. I believe that is Rahm's key to consistency.

if I had it to do all over again, I would have opted for the 'high swing' and not the 'tucked in elbow' swing that Ben Hogan made so popular (not taking anything away from the great Hogan course). Seeing swings like Couples, Daly, Davis Love, you knew they such an advantage in terms of driving distance, and playing from the Blue and Black tees, you need that.

On the downswing to you pull with the left arm, more than you push with the right, or about the same. Or go you really power with the right arm

    • @Inmotion70
      @Inmotion70  3 ปีที่แล้ว

The left arm should have ZERO pull, but rather be pulled by the pivot-turn. Both arms work as a team to throw the clubhead.
