2:05 There actually are some level changes in Knuckles in Sonic 2! They were only able to change the object layouts due to technical limitations, but they added some new secrets including those 1-ups, as well as adding invisible walls to some places to prevent Knuckles from cheesing levels, most notably at the end of Wing Fortress to prevent him from skipping the boss arena.
This is the kind of info I'd expect the video author to have researched for 5 minutes smh

And even then, there’s a left press I have yet to remove in Wing Fortress.

There are two modes to this challenge;
Hard: Play it on emulated hardware with save states.
Impossible: Play it on the Genesis (Mega Drive).

I absolutely adore the fact that we've basically hit the wall in terms of optimised speed runs for all the old Sonic games, so the only new stuff comes from ridiculous things like this. I doubt they knew when they made this game how obsessively it would later be dissected by people with this much free time.

5:24 there’s actually an easier way to do this:
*First when you get near the spring, glide and land on the perfect area of it and make sure u have enough momentum to make it to the platform. (The space between the ceiling and the platform is not really that small so it’s not too difficult)*
Why not go back to there and try it?
(Might take a couple tries)

I was inspired by this video to try this challenge in Proto Palace Zone and Hidden Palace Zone, since neither of those could be done in this version. Both levels are theoretically possible, but it took me NUMEROUS tries to get to Hidden Palace’s boss and I don’t even know if the boss is possible.
I discovered a few things to make some levels easier:
1. In chemical plant act 2 there is a path which allows you to go through only 1 tube, and this tube happens to have an arc above it which allows you to bounce away from the spring, meaning you can complete the level normally.
2. The aquatic ruin boss is way easier if you get on top of the left pillar and spindash into him.
3. the hilltop boss can be beaten by spindashing into him when on the right, pushing you to the left, then gliding through him back to the right and tepeating, making damage avoidance easy.
4. You can just manage to hit the death egg robot when he is walking to you from the left, but it is very hard to do, making the space management less of an issue.
Just imagine how Knuckles feels during all of this. He must be VERY happy after clearing Death Egg! Congratulations Knuckles; you're my favorite for a reason.

Imagine 25 years ago when this game was released, completing it would give a certain amount of satisfaction. This guy’s done it without using the two most fundamental controls.

Ah, this brings back momories. I remember a few years ago trying to do this challenge on the
mobile version of Sonic 2 and of course fail miserably, although I was trying without up or down as well.
I actually thought it was impossible. So one day I stumbled upon the Sonic Mania challenge video and
thought to myself: "Oh, someone else is also doing this and even making video about it. It's gonna be interesting"
After I've watched the video I thought to myself: "Ok, I'm realy bad at doing this" That is actually how I got

I actually never played on the genesis so the fact that you can put Sonic 2 and S&K together like that is impressive. (I just played on Sonic Mega Collection Plus)
In aquatic ruin, you can also make a precise landing on the statues.

When you reach death egg robot, I said to my self 3-4 times, it is impossible to get through this without press left or right. Every time you did one left move less, I also was saying, “NO WAY”

I remember finding those extra lives as Knuckles in the chemical plant zone when I was a kid. I don't think you can reach them as Sonic (although I'd like someone to prove me wrong). I'd wager that plugging the cartridge into sonic 2 not only implants Knuckles into the game, but some extra items such as those 1ups.
The editing at the intro was beautiful

S2K level design in Chemical Plant Zone was adjusted for him. All the code for the game as well as Knuckles' assets are on 256KB ROM stored in S&K cart.

3:35 the arrow isn't big enough, so knuckles plays his ledge animation. But he only has his forward ledge animation, so the game turns him around to play it.

there IS level differences in Sonic 2 & Knuckles, actually. They added Knuckles-specific paths like the ones you use. Also interesting to note, all of the Sonic 2 level data is on the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge. the Sonic 2 cart just tells the game it's ok to access it.

It's the most hellish sonic boss along with lancelot returns
@@DriveLine. Death Egg Robot is very pattern based and can be manipulated to the point of being a total non-issue. It only has a reputation because it's designed to kill people their first time with beginner's trap attacks the player can't react to.

@@DriveLine. Then yeah I don't blame you. The boss is designed to be cheap before you get the specific patterns down, which is how it pretends to be a hard boss.

Believe Mike89 did a blindfolded run, or was it his brother, Werster, interesting to see, I couldn't do it. However you should check out blindfolded oot! Heard there was even a blind player who beat the game using only audio cues and the fact that Links moves move him a fixed distance and the terrain, etc can be abused to set up. Crazy strategies.

The aquatic ruin zone boss, when you are on the edge of an arrow, The balancing on a ledge animation turns Knuckles around I have experienced that too so use that to your advantage when attempting this challenge (witch I can't because I suck at the OLDER classic Sonic games NOT Sonic mania)

Loads of stages changes in the game with s2 and knuckles, mostly height jump changes but also extra barriers and some climbing routes opened.

Mode to make the mania levels into encore levels with a partner
This makes the mania challenge possible

I never noticed that in the Aquatic Ruin boss, when Robotnik hits the marble totem columns, their eyes pop out when one of them spits out a spear. How did I never notice that?
