What made Magic and Bird such good players is their team play. They were more concerned about winning than scoring. Jordan was the most physically gifted player in his time yet both times he met Bird in the playoffs the Bulls got swept despite Jordan outscoring Bird. Bird didn't need to score to affect the game, he was a better team player. Players that defended against Bird said he was dangerous even when he didn't have the ball. I hated Larry Bird when he played because you knew when it was 4th qtr with under 2 minutes to play and the game was close, Larry was the guy that could put the dagger in your heart. Phil

Larry wasn't slow. He was as quick as he needed to be. He dominated. He had quick hands, a quick first step, and he was fast before he hurt his back. He could still do what he needed to do with more swag than his opponents after he hurt his back. Nobody hustled harder. He had a third gear when he needed to have it. He just played smarter. He could dunk. And he could do everything else that needed done.

He was slow, but he was agile. In B-ball it's not how fast you can go generally but how fast you can stop and change direction with precision. He had all that in spades.

This is my first time here so I don't know if you've already watched the vid. "Making the Case" for Bird, but if not, I think you'd enjoy reacting to it. He talks about this very topic-- who had more help, Magic or Bird. He also offers some stats and footage you may not have seen yet.
Also-- several of the points you made about the difference between play back then and now, while true, overlook the fact that Bird was doing things back then to a degree others weren't, even in a time when it was part of the game-- e.g., lots of trash talkers, but nobody was telling opponents exactly what the play was going to be, and laying out what they would do in response to each of the opponent's defensive moved, and then going ahead and doing it successfully despite having given it all away in advance.
Similarly, while the game was absolutely exponentially more physical and with more players playing hurt, nobody came close to Bird, so far as I know, in playing hurt and even, in the case of his pre-NBA finger injury, even deformed, throughout their careers. Another vid. you should check out: 5 times Larry Bird Played Hurt.
Great reaction...can't wait to watch some more after this one. Thanks for paying such close attention and sharing the things you notice, which not all reactors catch!

    • @Alice-xy3fi
      @Alice-xy3fi ปีที่แล้ว +2

p.s. You might want to keep an open mind about Magic being a better passer than Bird. Others will probably point out the case to be made for Bird, but one quote I've heard attributed to Pat Riley (don't know if he was actually the first to say it, or if these were his exact words) was that Magic made easy passes look spectacular, and Bird made spectacular passes look easy." This totally fits with their personalities, too, with Magic being Hollywood/Showtime, playing with such in-your-face flair, joy and exuberance, while Larry, when not trash talking, was more of an understated, minimal, get-the-job-done-as-efficiently-as-possible type, for the most part.

He ran slow but his first step and hand speed was insane. He also dominated because his IQ WAS off the charts. He saw things far ahead of everyone else. He also used to play street ball with the brothers before the NBA and hates when white guys gard him claiming its disrespectful. He averaged 50/40/90 4 years straight almost 5. His passing is almost on parr with Magic .he ca throw every kind of pass there is. He has a passing highlight video. Larry Bird greatest passer of all time video re-edit. Also numerous trash talking videos. Thanks for the reaction.

Thx for the video. ☘️ Larry Legend
The man won 3 consecutive MVPs after placing 2nd for three consecutive years. He followed up his 3 consecutive wins with a 3rd and another 2nd.
He received 67 % of all votes from 1980-1988.
Slow??? I didn’t see Bird being "slow" nor "unable to jump" compared to the majority on the court. Bird was mostly everywhere on the court doing every sort of thing at all times when he played.
Bird is the most complete all-around basketball player. Period.
Did his double Achilles injuries and surgery make a difference in his bounce and speed? Yup, some. Did the ever worsening back issues affect his speed? Yup.
But that wasn't for the majority of his career. And Bird could take control a game, even then.

There's a few things about Larry that nobody really talks about ...
    1. Larry broke the first finger on his right hand in the summer right after he got drafted. It was some kind of weird softball injury. Since we Hoosiers aren't really known for being too bright, Larry never really did anything about it, and it healed all funny. According to Larry, his ballhandling was crap after that. 😳
    2. In that game against the Pacers, Bird had a broken cheek and a concussion. He said he was seeing double for the rest of the game after he came back, and he was shooting in between them.
Larry is a really special guy, but he'd be the first to tell you that a lot of his clutch wins came from endless practice hours and hating to lose even more than he liked to win.
    Great reaction!

Larry was the only significant addition to the Celtics roster in his rookie year and they won 32 more games that year than the year before. He made everybody around him better. As far as his speed, he didn't have to be that fast. He was a step and a half into the next play before anybody else got started because he studied the game much more than others. He was playing chess while everybody else was playing checkers. Watch the play where got his own rebound and put it back up. He knew where that ball was going as soon as he shot it and he was there waiting for it.

I never really understood why people say he's slow or can't jump. At the 2:31 mark, look at his feet are and where his head is. I think he looked slow but was deceptively fast and could jump higher than people give him credit. Another thing I noticed watching this is that he has a nearly 3 dimensional view of the court. He knows where everyone is and where they will be before they get there.

Bird was always the most dominant player on the floor for his entire career day 1 until he retired. It didn't matter if Magic, Kareem, Dr. J, Isiah, Hakeem, Worthy, McHale, Walton, Ewing, Malone were on the floor. Bird was the best player and the primary focus of the game. People say he couldn't play today but think about who guarded him. Rodman, Worthy, Cooper, Dr. J, Barkley, McDaniel, Kemp, Wilkins were all super athletic even applying today's standards. He shredded every one of them. Look at Luka. Bird was bigger and better than Luka so there's no question he could play today. Likely he would play the four in today's game, but he ran the floor with Worthy. Worthy was just as fast in transition as LeBron. Worthy had great foot speed. No question Bird at the four today would have no problem with the speed of the game. He also had great leadership skills. He drove his teammates but they loved him. Look at how they talk about him today. Not all great players could say that.

Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball...My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted...What my Dad used to say, about Larry's game, is that it reminded him of someone, who wasn't only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, football, soccer, & strategic chess, all at the same time, & what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique & gifted players, I ever watched!

Larry was and is widely considered to be the best passer in the NBA. Larry was faster and way more athletic than most people will ever admit. I think that he went slower than he could run most times and that that is like him waiting until people (opposing players) were one step away to shoot. I think those things were about throwing the other teams off of their games. Like his trash talk was about getting in their heads. Everything he did at times was about messing with their minds.

  • @samblethen

Great reaction. Thanks! At 6 ft 9 in, Bird was the best small forward ever. I watched him from the beginning all the way until his bad back made him retire. The night before a big game Bird could be found at a local bar drinking everyone under the table and getting into fist fights. Only 3 players in NBA history ever won 3 MVP's in a row - Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell and Larry Bird.
Two Pat Riley quotes about Bird:
    1) "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game I'd choose Michael Jordan; If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life...I'd take Larry Bird."
    2) "He's the greatest clutch player I've ever seen. The hell with Jerry West!"

  • @randyfergus8781
    @randyfergus8781 ปีที่แล้ว +2

There's a difference between fast and quick. Larry wasn't particularly fast but he was unbelievably quick. He was faster before he injured his back too. He was also an intense student of the game and knew where everybody on the floor was every second of the game. One of the stories about him that escapes out people came not from another player or coach but from a maintenance man working at Boston Gardens one day in the upper level. He noticed Bird down on the floor by himself just dribbling in an almost gridline pattern. The maintenance man worked his way down to the floor level wanting to see what it was that Bird was doing. Arriving on the floor, he approached Bird and asked what he was doing. Bird's answer was that he was listening and looking for softer and harder spots in the floor so he would know where to steer his opponents during a game because the rebound of the ball off the floor would change. He also spent an hour or so after every practice by himself just working on his shooting.
My favorite quote about Bird was from James Worthy, a Lakers teammate of Magic. When asked if he would rather guard Jordan or Bird, he said he would much rather guard Jordan because he just made you look slow but Bird made you look stupid. You need to watch this video all the way to the end. You missed one of the best parts of it.

For as long as Lebron's been playing. Why doesn't he have more rings or MVPs? Even Jordan has more in less games. Can't use "Lebron had no help" excuse. Larry turned the Celtics around his rookie year. From a 29 - 53 season to 61 - 21 season. Before Parrish, McHale, Ainge, DJ & Walton were on the team. In 897 games. Larry was the first & founding member of the 50/40/90 club, 3 CONSECUTIVE MVP's, 1st 3pt contest winner for 3 yrs, 3 rings 2 Finals MVPs, 12 All star, 10 all NBA Teams, 3x All Defense selection. All in 13 years. It took Bird just two seasons to get his first ring. Starting in his rookie season, Bird put together 9 straight seasons of 10.5 win shares or more. He led the league in win shares in back-to-back seasons in 1985 and 1986, 2 of his 3 consecutive MVP seasons. He led the league in Defensive Win Shares 4 times and on offense 1 time. Larry's one of 8 hall of famers to win rookie of the year & be named to the all NBA first team. The only one so far to have those honors after Larry is Tim Duncan. Larry Bird is the only player to win Rookie of the Year, League MVP, Finals MVP, All-Star MVP, coach of the year & executive of the year. He did all that playing with a broken back the last 7 years of his career.

No Labron is Not infront of Bird , its taken Labron almost 2x as many years as Bird played in total to have similar accolades as Bird , take Labrons best 4 year stretch and compare it to Birds , you can take Birds best 4 years and average the total over those 4 years and its a 50/40/90 average (BTW the first and second player to ever average a 50/40/90 season was Bird) his two seasons in that stretch that are not 50/40/90 seasons are so close his overage on the ones that are bring the average up to measure. Labron only has Longevity over Bird witch will allow him to accumilate more accolades but does not mean hes the better player.
the magic argument is the same magic has more rings hes also more flashy so has the eye test but he also had Kreem on his team witch has a solid goat claim in his own right , Magic had the better team backing him but that does not mean Magic was a better player than Bird.
you can carry this argument over to MJ as well but it go's in the Opposit direction this time MJ played Bird in the playoffs in back to back season's MJ got swept in back to back season's by bird 0-3 and 0-3 Birds team was better than MJ's but just watch those games its clear even thou MJ lost he was the better player

He was quick as a cat and jumped well. He ran away from, around, through and over every player that ever stood in front of him. That is an athlete. He also played the actual game as well as anyone who ever took a shot. He wouldn't have made any Olympic Track and Field teams, but there are no Track And Field Olympians in the HoF, either.

Couldn’t like or subscribe, my man. You talked over too much and cut off the video before it showed Magic, at Bird’s retirement ceremony, give him a jersey that said “to the greatest basketball player ever, but more important, a friend forever.”
One of the thing you talked over was when he came back I to the Indiana game, the Announcer said “Larry Bird, making his return from an apparent fracture of the right cheek .”
We want to hear what you have to say, so do us a favor and stop the video, say what you got, then take it back 10 seconds so you don’t miss important things like Bird leading his team to victory in the final game of a playoff series with a broken cheek, a concussion, and double vision. I reconsidered and liked and subscribed

They just happened to be different colors and personalities. But their love of the game and dedication to it was EXACTLY the same. They're in my top 3 picks of all time right behind Jordan.

So Do You Really Think LeFlop Would Have Came Back Into The Game After Fracturing A Face Bone.?. NOPE! Yes Larry was Slow BUT Really Not; Because He Was Always There At Either End Of The Court & Doing Something To Help. To Me Larry Had Back Then & Still To This Day The Best Basketball IQ & Skills. To be fair to LeBron, he could not have come back into that game, because Bird had a concussion. It might be that LeBron wouldn't have wanted to keep playing anyway, but regardless he would have been stopped by the league's doctors. They don't let people come back into games in the 21st century after they hit their head that hard.

There was a funny comment an old player said about Bird - he said, you gotta be careful with Larry, he’s the type of guy that’ll slow right past you.
I know guys all get compared to players recently, and guys compare Cade Cunningham to Luka, but I think he’s more of a Bird. Just that slow methodical dude that takes his time and picks his spots, and just carves up defenses. I’ll take basketball IQ over athleticism any day, because that athleticism won’t last, but the basketball IQ just keeps getting better. There’s more than one way to skin a cat.

I was very fortunate to witness the end of that Era. The one thing I've noticed is people still say the same things about Larry as they did back then. He's slow etc.. You have to understand his mentality. He wanted everyone to think he was slow. He wanted everyone to think he couldn't jump. Because the moment they did, they got embarrassed in front of their whole city. That's what made him more dangerous than anyone else. His mindset. Magic had really amazing style and skills. But Larry was a head hunter

Larry broke his finger, after he was drafted and before he signed his contract. He hurt his back, putting in a driveway for his mom in 85. He had double achilleas surgery. He played twice with double vision and fractures to his face. He played, after having a dr cut 2 inches in between his toes, to drain an infection. Not only was he a great player, he was a team player.

Doncich couldn't carry Bird's jock strap. Larry played with a fractured cheek and eye socket, today's players sit out 3 games with a hang nail.

LeBron is behind Jordan and Bird. Jordan is the Greatest Player of All Time while Bird is the Greatest All-Around Player of All Time. There is no way Lebron is ahead of Bird when Lebron doesn't always play defense, can't shoot free throws and had to learn to shoot after entering the league.. Bird didn't have to improve in any area (shooting, passing, rebounding, free throws, defense, etc.) but did so because of his love for the game.

    • @realhurrikaneisaac

Remember when he was jawing with Kareem and was standing face to face and he wasn't that much smaller than Kareem who is 7' 2. And how long did it take for your Mom to convince you to check out some of Larry Bird stories and videos. Saw Bird in person play for ISU in feb 78, and am old enough to have watched 79’ bird/magic title game. John Salley played against both, and I agree when he said both are incomparable. People don’t often talk about how similar they were. I finally gave up picking one or the other. Even the echoes of their college rivalry transferred to nba with Magic’s team having more depth. Laker organization was more inventive getting Worthy, Green, Cooper, Rambis, Scott. Celtics super 6th,Walton, got hurt after one year. People forget Bird lost a year because he was working on a trash truck. People also forget Magic scored over 40 as a rookie to win title because Kareem was hurt. I’ve never anything like either of them before or since . They’re both Savants at everything. I remember 79’ title game where Magic recognized that Donnelly was hot and fed him the ball.
