He looked stiff because he was. He destroyed his back in like 1986 and had 2 bad knees and a lot of these highlights are from after all that. Dude was killing people when he couldn't even sit on the bench and had to lay on the floor and barely get dressed to play because of his back

Yeah he mangled on his right hand... index finger/ pointer finger playing softball! Surgery didn't fix it! He almost lost out on an NBA career because of it! But he had surgery done on it 2 or 3 times and they could never get it right.

@@phunkjnky I'd feel sorry for LeBron if he faced Larry. I think he'd be flopping before the play began because Larry would tell him beforehand, what was going to happen. LeBron is a great athlete but Larry was something else. Larry was right in the middle with his jumping height and running speed, as far as the NBA goes. A 28 inch vertical jump isn't too bad. It may not be great but it's all he needed.

all around player? Bird is the MOST COMPLETE player EVER..
Only player EVER to average atleast 24 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists a game for his career..
FIRST player to shoot atleast 50% fg, 40% 3 pt and 90% ft (50/40/90) and with than Steve Nash, the ONLY two players to shoot for those numbers in MULTIPLE SEASONS (bird did it twice)..
On offense, he could post high or low, he could get rebounds and put backs, he could face up and drive or jab step and shoot, he could move without the ball around screens, he could spot up, he could create his own shot, he could shot off the dribble and he could pass...
Defensively? Bird made three all defensive 2nd teams, led the league in defensive win shares four times (only 3-4 other players have lead the league that many times in defensive win shares for a season) and he came in 2nd THREE TIMES and for his shortened career he is STILL number 33 all time in defensive win shares accumulated (ahead of players like Dennis Rodman and Chris Paul). so he OBVIOUSLY played defense..
he was clutch, he was tough, he was grimy.. for me, if im starting a team to build a dynasty and win, first Jordan, then Bird.

I grew up in the 80s. I wish I could fully articulate how insanely hyped the Bird VS Magic rivalry was. Any time they played, you _knew_ you were in for a show. One interesting detail is how they became friends. Look up a video called Magic And Bird: A Rivalry Gives Way To Friendship, where they explain it themselves. They were supposed to shoot a Converse sneaker commercial together, but Larry didn't want to do it in LA. So they brought the production to the house he'd built for his mom in his tiny hometown of French Lick. The house has a private basketball court that Larry used for practice. Magic figured that he'd just do the commercial and get out of there quick. At first, the two were kind of awkward; they'd only seen each other in competitive settings. What do you even say to your most bitter rival? But eventually they got to share a bench and small talk when they were taking breaks. Then they went inside and Larry's mom made lunch for them, and Magic realized that he could let his guard down and just be himself. It's like if two kids played basketball at school together, they decided to hang out later, and one's mom made lunch for them.

Here's a few things to know about Bird.
For eight consecutive years, he finished first or second in MVP voting, winning three times. No one has ever had an eight-year run like that.
The Celtics were 29-53 the year before he joined the team; 60-22 his first year, and he was the only major change.
A bad back and multiple surgeries cut his career short. His last five years he was increasingly hampered by the back, though still feared by everyone.
You ask about what he did after he played? He coached for three years, and was named Coach of the Year.
Later, he was a GM, and yep, was named GM of the year. Only person in NBA history to win and MVP, a finals MVP, Coach of the Year and GM of the Year. Perhaps the greatest basketball mind ever.

If you want to take your basketball game to the next level you should study everything you can about how Bird plays as its a clear blueprint of how to play better. The more you watch him the more you can learn. He truly took passing to levels that are very hard for players today to match. Some can do a couple of his tricks but no one has got all of them. Check out his games with jordan to see just how crazy skilled bird was and you will see a battle of titans.

Yep, when he learned of Magic's diagnosis, Bird called, and actually cried on the phone with him. Was the one guy who stood with Magic.

Larry could do so many things with the ball that he could just flinch and have dudes juked.
Didn't need speed, 20 dribbles between the legs... just had to pump fake a pass or shot or pretend to take that first step and wouldn't even move out of the spot.

I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to Larry Bird. Can't wait for all the other ones. Passing highlights the re-edited version, making the case for Larry Bird by Clayton Crowley, all the greats talking about how great Larry was. Trash talking, how tough he was due to back injury. Etc ❤️

Larry Bird would tell the press the week before how many points he was going to score and how many rebounds and steals and he would do it in the game. He was trying to make it more fun for himself.

Bird and Magic each only played 13 seasons! But his back was so fucked up, the last 2 seasons he couldn't even sit on the bench, he had to lay on his stomach!!! After back surgery, he became Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year!!

"That's ... ridiculously different." Well said, man. That about sums Bird up. I call Bird the BOAT... and I love Magic Johnson. In the day, I hated Bird and supported Magic. However, my mind became more rational as time went by. Bird was like some wild-man, highlander warrior told he can't kill and fight any more, so he took up basketball... and KILLED.

Ok loved the vid and your reaction. You must watch more than this one to see how unbelievable Bird really was. Here are his career game averages. Points 24.3, rebounds 10.0, assists 6.3. He was the original member of the 50,40,90% club and he did twice before anyone else had done it once. Bird and Nash the only two in NBA history to do it more than once. He won the league MVP 3 straight years only others to do that were Wilt and Bill Russell. From 1980-1989 Bird won 67% of the MVP votes for the entire decade. The next closest was Magic with 37%. The dominated for an entire decade! Man I subbed and can’t wait to watch you go down this Bird rabbit hole!
May I suggest the video the greatest passer- Larry Bird the remix. Must be the remix there is. About 17-18 minutes of Larry dropping dimes. Then you need to watch his trash talk videos.

It is priceless to see your reactions! I grew up in the city Larry Bird went to school at, Indiana State University. Larry was the absolute thing nobody ever saw before!! His skills had never been seen before! I got to give him five once, and I was never gonna wash that hand! He was straight-up unbelievable!!!!! totally! He and Magic were more than friends, they were brothers!!

tldr: any Bird video is worth watching. New sub because I love watching y’all slowly realize just how good this guy is.
You just watched highlights of the ONLY man in NBA history to win all of the following:
    Rookie of the Year
All-NBA 10 times, one of the few to be named rookie of the year as being on the All-NBA team as a rookie
MVP 3 times consecutively, one of only three players to do so and the last to do it since the merger
All Star Team 12 times in a 13 year career, he missed most of the 1988 season playing in only 6 games
All Star MVP at least once
Coach of the Year with the Pacers
Executive of the Year also with the Pacers
In addition he was Collegiate Player of the Year as a senior and won a gold medal on the dream team. He founded the 50-40-90 club and repeated the following year. I may be missing something but I’m sure I’ll be reminded of it.

Great reaction. Thanks! Bird was the best small forward ever. I watched him from the beginning all the way until his bad back made him retire. The night before a big game Bird could be found at a local bar drinking everyone under the table and getting into fist fights.
Two Pat Riley quotes about Bird:
    1) "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game I'd choose Michael Jordan; If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life...I'd take Larry Bird."
    2) "He's the greatest clutch player I've ever seen. The hell with Jerry West!"

It's always nice to see a young person learn about Bird, the greatest all-around player (scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, hustle, leadership, clutchness, playing injured) to ever play the game!! He led the Celtics to 32 more wins than the year before in his rookie year, after leading Indiana State to 33 straight wins and the national championship game! Keep learning about him young fella. I promise you won't be disappointed! Much love and respect 🤙

Ok I'll explain why Larry is the GOAT once and for all. Yes he won all the cool awards, yes Jordan never beat him, yes he played injured most of his career, yes every player feared and respected him, but Larry did 2 things no other player has ever done and probably never will. He was made Coach of the Year and then Executive of the Year. On the court, off the court, it doesn't matter. Larry ruled Basketball.

The more you dig into Larry Bird's legend, the more amazed you're going to be. He won his championships against the likes of Kareem, Magic, Dr. J., Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Dominique, Dennis Rodman and Isaiah Thomas. Among his peers he was considered to be the #1 Trash Talker! This man talked more noise than anyone else in the league -- and then proceeded to back it up! Look into his trash-talking legacy if you want to be amazed even further!!!

  • @johangambleputty7658
    @johangambleputty7658 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That was NOT the end of Legend's time in the NBA though. He coached the Indiana Pacers, and then as an executive ran the organization.
Larry was 1 of only 3 to ever get the league MVP 3x in a row. He is also the ONLY person to ever get the triple crown: Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year.
Larry Bird is absolutely GOAT worthy. Check out his Trash Talking videos, or Passing/Assist videos. He did it all, during one of the hardest eras of the NBA. Legend.

Bird's body only held up for 13 seasons, which is a lot shorter than the average NBA player.....but when he retired, he left it all out there on the court, played until he couldn't do it anymore.

One of the best explanations I was ever given as to what made Larry so good, was that his Basketball IQ made him the Einstein of basketball. Was he a physical player like some of the modern guys No, but he made up for his lack of physicality with his CRAZY Basketball IQ. So many younger players could learn through osmosis just watching his highlights. because the perfect player would have a High IQ and High Physicality. now days we kinda gone in reverse we have High Physicality and moderate IQ (I say moderate but compared to Normies, still way better than us).
Sorry to hear about you not being able to play, but some wise words I once heard is.
"A Warrior does not do what he loves, A Warrior finds the love in what he does."
and as a physical Athlete your kinda in the category of modern day Warrior/Athlete.
