    Larry Bird is in the top 5 and maybe the top 2. There has never been a player like him in NBA history.
    Bird would not like playing in today's game because it would not be challenging enough for him.
    Bird played every minute he could. He didn't "manage" his time. It's like he said - if you get paid to play then you play.

    It’s interesting that the general perspective is whether the old legends could play in today’s game. Let’s turn the tables to see if today’s basketball stars could have played in the NBA back in the day, when the game was more physical; could they withstand the trash talking and being actually guarded by defensive players when the referees actually let the players play. I was fortunate to see the Magic and Bird games back in the day, and they were truly AWESOME!

    Nice intelligent reaction! I am 51 years old and one of the main things I am thankful for is being able to watch the Bird/Magic rivalry that turned into friendship! Bird, in my opinion, is the greatest ALL-AROUND player to ever pick up a basketball!! Keep up the great reactions! Much love and respect 🤙

    It was a pleasure listening and watching you. Here's my college story from the late 70's. Larry's college was playing mine and we heard they had a potential all American. Knowing nothing, during warm ups we tried to guess which black player was larry. Man were we wrong, he not only beat our Mac champion team, but also set an arena scoring record with no 3 point line! Peace from Northern Michigan.

    I watched a video the other day showing players traveling during today's games. Some of the announcers were even counting the steps. They got as high as 5 steps carrying the ball. The other huge difference between then and now is the "carrying" the ball as they dribble. They aren't even dribbling. They're simply catching the ball, bouncing it, then catching it and bouncing it.

    You're right about the Celtics and Lakers games. They were always great. At the time basketball was starting to get bigger and more easily available on tv because it was nearing the end of Wilt's playing days and Dr. J playing on the 76ers played the Lakers in the Finals in the early 80s. It isn't really talked about much on reaction channels but the Bird vs. Magic thing was a carry over from college. Magic's team (Michigan State) beat Bird's team (Indiana State) in 1979 and then they just essentially picked right back up in the NBA. I remember that retirement ceremony for Bird. The Garden was sold out and it wasn't even a game night. I've been a serious basketball fan since the early 80s (I was born in 73) and I've got to watch loads of games and without a doubt, the game used to be better. There was a concerted effort in the 80s to have games be higher scoring and more "exciting" and it was really what prompted rules changes then and now. Everything from the shot clock, to backcourt violation tine being reduced, to changes in rules in illegal defense and hand-checking..... all of it was done to increase scoring because it was supposed to be something that brought more fans in. Look back at rhe NCAA Championship game when Jordan hit the shot against Georgetown and you won't even see a 3 point line painted on the floor.

    Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball......My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted......What my Dad used to say, Larry's game reminded him of someone, who was not only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, hockey, baseball, track & Field, soccer, football, & strategic chess in his head, and that's what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique and gifted players, I have ever watched! Really enjoyed your thoughts & commentary, & I absolutely agree with you, on what Basketball is now, and is a shame, that the game doesn't seem about the team anymore, and all about the individual stand out......

    Bird played and excelled when giants walked the court. On his signing Larry said "If my toenail gets torn off I won't stop I'll still give 100%. Where is that today. The dust gets flicked off a jersey and you get an Oscar worthy performance of pain.The "participation award" fans of today need to devalue the iron men of past so they can feel good about the tin foil players of today. It's part of the feminization of males. It doesn't have to be a football game but the safe space game today is dull.

I’ve had broken fingers, toes, a hip, sprained ankles and wrists. It as fun and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The game today is a single man’s game. There’s no team to it.

    If I may begin this reply with a Larry Birdism “young fella” watching Magic/Bird games was a marvelous experience. I’m thankful that a man your age recognizes the difference in today’s game vs the game I enjoyed. I still have Jordan as the GOAT, but Bird is #2 on my list. Sure, today’s players are amazing athletes. They play great, but they’re not great players!

  • @trekkiexb5
    @trekkiexb5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Don't apologize for liking Larry Bird. And you are right, the game has changed fundamentally so much. Maybe a separate list would be good, but at the end, people will compare the lists for the GOAT'S GOAT. You know it.
    You also pointed out some things with MJ, his lack of competition, and the shooting. You are probably right, the Bulls sucked and MJ was out for himself for awhile. I just read "Drive" that Larry wrote during when he was hurt and out with bone spurs. He said some things about MJ and understood that he was the future, but he was excited to get bat to the game, despite his injuries and his back, he wanted to continue. MJ is the future to him, and Magic was the now. And he wanted to defeat the Now.
    Larry is my #1 on all my lists, with Magic a close second. He's my favorite player, the GOAT and my franchise starter. And while my lists contents vary, he is consistent, along with Magic. Larry first Magic second. Honestly they should be duct taped together on any list.
    I think you were talking about the Magic and Bird Documentary in your review. If not, I would do it, I think you would appreciate it. "Courtship of Rivals"

    You're right about today's NBA. There are too many primadonnas. There are too many trying to make great highlights instead of playing the game. I started losing interest in the NBA in the mid-2000's. I tried to watch it again recently and couldn't make it.

    The video mistakenly reported the two " consecutive shots" against washington. The firstwas not to win the game but to tie. The second tied the game. The shot that won the game was in the last seconds of the overtime. So, he hit two game tying and one game winning shots in one game. I really believe that this current dissing of Bird is being stoked by espn because of the growing Bird is better than Lebron belief-espn worships Lebron.

  • @Tcheera
    @Tcheera ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I am a huge Jordan fan, but I dunno - I don't think you're right about the Bulls and MJ for a few reasons even though he's still the GOAT regardless:
    1. He was trying to win and it's either misremembering or wrong to think he wasn't. He fought really hard against the Pistons in those series, even took them to game 7 in that last one. He got his as beat up and he came super close, but just couldn't get past him. If you think he just was out for himself that's pretty crazy. If he was just out for himself there's no way he would've risked as many injuries as he did trying to win those games. In fact, I think it's pretty cap to think MJ wasn't giving his all to win every playoffs he was in -- some of it was just trying to get as good as he could with the lineup he had -- he was just playing as 7th-8th seed against the Championship teams the first rounds his first years and there wasn't much chance for him to win no matter what he did. He scores 63, he loses. He passes to teammates, they turn it over to the number 1 rated Celtics -- name a strat that would've won against Larry's Celtics those two years in a row he faced them. If you think that MJ didn't wanna win, then you gotta also say Kobe didn't wanna win the early 2000s since he took a lot of shots, but that's crazy since MJ scored more and had better effieciency than Kobe. MJ also won DPOY while being scoring champ, so it's not like he wasn't trying his best. Didn't matter - he still lost.
    2. He also kept the scoring title all those other years (and had BETTER stat lines the years he lost), but if he was just a selfish player, then why didn't he lose when he stayed a selfish player in the 90s?
    3. Don't think he would've won 8 in a row -- is it possible? Mayyyybe. But is it certain? Not really. After both 3-peats MJ was as tired as we've ever seen him. After 93, in fact, wasn't sure he was gonna come back when his father was killed. I don't think if he'd stayed in basketball with everything personally going on he could've sustained if the Bulls would've lost their draft picks. I also think that MJ coming back had very little to do with him missing basketball and everything to do with the longest baseball strike and to do with him just missing competition period. Everyone makes it out like he JUST missed basketball -- but MLB was off for a year and they were trying to get MJ to be a scab. If they hadn't done that, I doubt that MJ would've come back to basketball in 95. So... if he hadn't had the time off he did to regroup, I think if he didn't burn out by 94 -- he might have gotten more in a row, but he certainly wouldn't have lasted through 98, and they also probably wouldn't have had the same epic roster. MJ was a god -- but we all get tired sometimes. I think if he had gone 8 years in a row we would've seen him lose at least 1 of those years to someone -- maybe the rockets, maybe even sooner, who knows?

    Also, people don’t understand that their general manager Reindorf 💩💩💩💩 had disagreements with Phil Jackson and wasn’t gonna bring him back biggest reason why the goat retired…. Remember also in ‘92 Jerry Reindorf was actively pursuing Toni Kukoč. And believe it or not, Scottie Pippen was screwed with his contract by none other than.💩💩💩💩 so unfortunately, the owners should’ve gotten rid of the general manager and not let him do what he did to destroy that franchise and specifically the fact that they could’ve easily won another three years

    The only two guys I would consider for the top ten of all time who are playing today, are joker and lebron. I know i often call him leflop, ill never give up on that, and i think he has a massive case of victim mentality going on but even then, as much as I hate it, I have to admit he is one of the most skilled and athletic players of all time. If he had the work ethic and grit of a larry bird, kareem abdul jabbar or michael jordan, lebron james would be in that same range. Top 3 of all time. But even with all his flaws, i would have to put him around 8-9th goat

    I heard Larry Bird say during an interview “ I don’t put on a uniform to play a game, I put on a uniform to win.”
    I loved the Celtic- Lakers rivalry and appreciated it for what it was, the frosting on the cake.
    But I relished Bird & the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals going against the Sixers, Hawks, Bullets, Pistons, Pacers, etc.
    Larry Legend stayed humble & loyal to the Celtics organization, his teammates & fans. And kudos to Red Auerbach for drafting Larry even though he wouldn’t join the team for one year.
    Sadly, I can’t watch the new version of the game. It’s boring & soft.

    It would be MUCH better if your own image was smaller so we could better see the bird part of the video, why do people do this??? Its the subject video we want to watch not someone else watching the dm video - makes me think the reactor wants the up front spot.

    I don’t know about you but I would much rather watch a game from the 80’s than a game today. So many say could Larry play in today’s era when they should be asking could Lebron play in Larry’s time. The game today is soft. They don’t have the heart like the players back then when they played hurt, they hustled and it was a team game. I have heard it said that Steph Curry and his 3 ball have ruined basketball. You are right in that you really can’t compare today’s greats with the greats of the 80’s.

    today's players could not hang with the players from the80's think of what Bill L would do to the players of today if they had to play against him half of them would not last a season. no player in this era has won the MVP 3 years in a row only 3 people have ever done and none of them play today. Dennis Cooper would play with people like mouse plays with a toy before bites the head off. nobody does clutch shots like Larry Bird. no todays players are way to soft to hang with the real players of the game

      Out of 34 times they played against each other, LARRY won 23 of those games (including 2 playoff SWEEPS).
      That’s a win percentage of 68%. NOBODY ELSE IN THE ENTIRE NBA HAS THAT KIND OF RECORD AGAINST JORDAN. NOBODY. ONLY LARRY LEGEND.

Great story about Bird and Dominique Wilkins, my 2 faves all time, going head to head in 88' game 7.....was savagery. And A Courtship of Rivals ESPN doc....best sports doc ever for me, and really shows Magic and Bird and what they did for the game and each other, and a lifetime friendship formed. And ya, Larry couldn't play today, it is too soft and Larry would prolly fall asleep or walk out lmao.
