Larry Bird was the best basketball player ever. He practiced more than any other player ever also. He knew where the basket was and how to get the ball into it from every inch of the floor. The night he fractured his cheek then came back to play he said he was seeing three baskets so he aimed for the one in the middle. Watched everyone of his games and enjoyed every moment. Don't think we will ever see as great a player again but I hope that every generation has a player who does his best to be even better than Bird no matter what sport they choose.

Bird was one of the best passers in the league, one of the best scorers in the league, one of the best defenders in the league, one of the best rebounders in the league, near the top of the league in 3-point shooting (long distance) and free throws (free shots when a foul is committed). There are some players in every sport who are in a league of their own, where you start comparing them to the best players that ever played, Bird is one of those. He was just incredible.

Bird would tell you what he was going to do to your face and then do it. They had to double team Bird and even then it wasn't enough. Another thing to think about. The 3 point line was added to the game his rookie year. He developed his 3 point game AFTER he joined the NBA. 100% the most clutch player ever. People whom everybody agrees are GOATS....those GOATS all say Larry is the GOAT.

Larry Bird won his 3rd straight three-point contest (a yearly NBA Allstar-Game contest) in his warm-up jacket after talking mad trash to his opposition (he walked into the locker room and said: "I'm just here to see who comes in 2nd."). He was hyper competitive, an incredible athlete, super versatile scorer, great passer, mad trash talker and astonishingly humble (outside of his trash talking).

  • @jeffdetmer4681
    @jeffdetmer4681 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

Verdy that was a really good reaction. Larry was 6'9" and played small forward. A few of the things he did ... Won the 3 point contest at the all star game 3 years in a row. 1st player to have a 50-40-90 season, which means he shot 50% of his shots (not including free throws) shot 40% from 3 point range and 90% on free throws(foul shots). He accomplished it again the following season. He is the only person every to be league MVP, then coach of the year and then executive of the year. After his playing career in Boston ended he became head coach of the Indiana Pacers and a few years later he became an executive with the team. Jordan had amazing God given talent and worked at some skills. The same is true of a lot of great players. Most of the "stars" of today would not play with the injuries Bird did. One year his bad back was so bad he had to spend the night in traction in the hospital and played the next night. His "trash talking" was legendary, but he would back it up. He would constantly tell other teams coaches and players what he was going to do and then do it. Before a game one night he walked past the other teams bench and said hi to the coach. The coach asked how he was feeling and Larry said I feel like 43 tonight. The coach thought he meant he felt old. At the end of 3 quarters the Celtics were far ahead and they took Larry out. He had 43 points! You did a really nice job on this. You got a like, a comment and a subscribe from me. Looking forward to more of your videos. Happy New Year.

The "no look" passes are about Larry passing to a spot instead of a person. They practice the formations so much that Larry would know (expect) his teammate to be at a certain spot at a certain time. To non-basketball watchers, it looks like the guys are just milling around or standing around the basket, but they all have responsibilities and "lanes" to defend or use (depending on the side).

Loving the reactions Verdy! Couple quick things - in the 80's scoring between 28 and 33 points per game would usually win you the scoring title, so for Bird to have 27 points left handed after only 3 quarters is awfully good. Also, the clip where Bird intercepts the pass with a half a second left, that was Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Championship. Detriot are ecstatic because they are one inbounds away from winning their third game and can win the series back home in Game 6, but Bird picks off the ball, Celtics win, and go on to win the series, going on to meet the Lakers again in the Finals. The Lakers and Celtics was a huge rivalry and they met four years in a row in the NBA Finals, 1984-87, with each team winning twice. Bird was playoff MVP both years the Celtics won, Magic won MVP in the '87 year.

Bird has the uncanny ability to always be in the right place at the right time to make the right play every time regardless of injury or athletic ability, supernatural basketball IQ. Yes, the Celtics and Lakers already had a long running rivalry going back to the early 1960's (they played each other in the Finals SEVEN times from 1959 to 1969, with Boston winning each time). Bird and Magic played each other in the college championship game in 1979, then they both entered the NBA in the same year with Magic going to the Lakers and Bird to the Celtics. For the next ten years either the Lakers or the Celtics (or both) were in the NBA Finals.

I recommended this to you after I watched your jordan review & I'm so happy to see you react to it! For not knowing basketball well I'm glad you were able to understand.
Larry had an innate ability to know where his teammates were at all times. Almost like a 3rd eye, which led 2 many no look & tap passes for easy baskets.
In that game he broke his orbital bone he had double vision & was not cleared by the doctors to return to the game but he snuck back. You can tell by the crowds reaction. Classic Larry.
He came from a poor family & his dad commited suicide b4 he made it to the league so the fam could collect his $.
Basketball is everywhere now but when bird was coming n2 the league games were shown on tape delay. He and magic johnson were also rivals in college & pretty much are credited with saving the league & making it as popular as it is today.
The 3 point contest he never even took off his warmup jacket.

I enjoyed your reaction. I have been a fan of the NBA since the 1970s until a few years ago, when I became very dissatisfied with modern play (and players).
IMO, Bird is the absolute best to suit up, Michale Jordan a close 2nd. Yes, he did play hurt a lot, abused his body to extremes that would sit most modern players on the bench, a fact that explains his relatively peak short career. But for the early to late 80s, he was the best. When he fractured his cheek/orbital bone in that fall, he was seeing double/blurred. In 1985 at his peak, in the off season, he was helping to build his mother's driveway, and while shoveling gravel, he severely injured his back. Yet he won the NBA Championship the next year, and made in to his last Finals against Magic and the Lakers in 1987. From then on, his back became more troublesome each consecutive year, until the Olympics, he had to lay down much of the time, playing in much pain. Fun Fact: when Bird entered the NBA as a rookie, he inherited the worst Celtics team in history, they had a losing record of 29-53. By just adding this wonder kid to the starting lineup, the Celtics posted the best record in his debut season, 61-21, making it to the Eastern Conference Finals losing to the 76ers. And of course in his sophomore season, he wins the championship. Jordan couldn't do this.
And here is a fun clip of current player Lance Stephenson telling a tale about his boss, Indiana Pacers President of Operations Larry Bird, how a 60+ year old Bird wowed him and his teammates. Enjoy :) th-cam.com/video/xUs8SiqV2YY/w-d-xo.html

Larry Bird and Magic Johnson saved the NBA when they both entered the league their rookie year for the 1979-1980 season. Interest in professional basketball was nearly at an all-time low. TV stations were actually pre-empting basketball games with other programming, or showing a taped game at midnight instead of live during the afternoon or prime time.
They were rivals in college, competing against each other in the NCAA championship game. Both extremely talented and intense competitors. Many college basketball fans followed their careers and competitive rivalry into the NBA, and pro-basketball saw a resurgence in popularity. NBA basketball in the 80s and 90s is unrivaled.

Larry Bird was the BEST all-round player the league has ever seen, PERIOD. He was dangerous from anywhere on the court even behind the back board. His passing was second to NONE. He did things effortlessly that other player could only dream of doing or have nightmares about. Larry Bird saved the NBA from oblivion, when he came to the NBA it was getting tape delayed for re-runs of Gunsmoke. Then Magic came to the league and the two of them have a fierce rivalry on the court but became fierce lifelong friends of the court. I'll say it again Larry Bird was as near to perfection as you could find. The Child Larry picks up at the end is his son Micheal "Baby" Bird.

The "left-handed game" was the last regular game of the season and Larry said he will play that way for at least 3 Q... In the last period he switched back to right because the game was to close. When asked "Why, he said he was saving his right hand for the Lakers in the playoffs.

A recent subscriber. Try the video of Larry playing hurt. He had an amazing tolerance for pain without it effecting his game. Players today rarely do this in any sport. Larry always wanted the win period.

27 is a great score for anyone. Pressing with your offhand is just crazy. Yeah, Bird was amazing. I'm 62 and saw him during his whole career. Basketball was pretty great in the eighties. Lots of amazing players. Yes, Lakers v Celtics....Magic v Bird. Huge!!!

My late father was a big fan of Larry Bird, seeing as they both came from small towns in Indiana.
That and he could play some mean basketball.

    1) The "left-handed game" was 27 points through 3 quarters. He actually had 47 in the game; the game got close enough that he wanted to make sure he won it so used his right hand as well in the 4th. 27 points is definitely a noteworthy scoring total -- close to the averages of the top superstars -- even if he hadn't scored the rest of the game.
    2) In the game where he fractured his cheek, he also had a concussion and was seeing double. He aimed for the left basket the first time and it went in, so he kept aiming for that basket.
    3) Even some of the places where you don't comment verbally, your facial expressions show you noticed some of the moves. :)
    4) Larry is also a great human being -- when Magic was diagnosed with HIV, Larry was one of the first to reach out to give him support. Also, when Larry retired, he declined an opportunity to delay the decision for two weeks, which would have kicked in a contract extension and given him an extra $10 million.

One of my most impressive facts about Bird is the game that after three quarters he was 1 steal (I think a steal) from having a quadruple-double. Yet, because of the Celtics' huge lead, Bird opted to sit out the rest of the game. Amazing in more than one way!

Larry Bird is considered by professional basketball players to be in the top 3 of all time. It's usually Jordan, Johnson, Bird. Larry hurt his back and had to retire early, if not, who knows what people would be saying? He had other things than court skill, like leadership, 'clutch' and grit that are not in stats. You might not understand some of the references like "The Hick From French Lick". He is from the famous tiny town of 'French Lick', Indiana and became a legend in his own lifetime.

note, "a lick" is a place to get salt and minerals in the diet, named so because animals can be seen 'licking' for them there, usually around springs. It's not something weird or derogatory.

Merry Christmas, Verdy. For some really good entertainment you should watch some Larry Bird trash talking videos. He's awesome at it because it's not trash he's talking and he has a great sense of humor. But the best thing is that the competitors telling the stories are laughing their butts off while telling about being beaten. It's kind of heart warming to see that kind of respect.

I was lucky enough to be a young teen in the early 80s and got to watch Bird and gang take on the Lakers for Championships. Was fun. You could put the entire team on Bird and he'd simply shoot over them for 3 points.

I really enjoyed your reaction to Larry bird. The best part is you don’t know all the rules or what kind of points a player should score. You’re a sports player though. You understand what it takes to be great. Confidence, getting everyone involved, taking and making the shot when it counts, calling your shot. You called it like you were a real fan of the game and that’s what made this so enjoyable to watch. You made a comment about how he has eyes on the back of his head. Announces use to say that about bird! Great reaction!!!

Legendary Los Angeles Lakers coach Pat Riley once observed, "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save the game, I'd pick Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I'd choose Larry Bird."
That is how vitally important (or "clutch") Larry Bird was. Just so you know, pretty much every player who commented in that video about Larry Bird has been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Larry Bird absolutely dominated the game when he played...and tortured many of the opposing players with his trash talk at the same time.

The same goes for MJ and the other greats of that era, Bird was not only amazing. He was amazing against some of the best of all time. They all had some of the fiercest competition that's ever been seen. Yet each of them earned their spot as one of the all time bests.

This is great thing about Bird (and Michael Jordan), their fan base can always say 'he was ours'. Nowadays... we have guys who bounce around to try and chase championships, and no one can make that claim for any of these clowns. And that's a problem.

Larry Bird is the only person to win MVP, Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year awards. Also, he is just one of three to win three consecutive MVPs (Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell are the other two). Additionally, Larry was the first to ever make the 50/40/90 club (50% Field Goal, 40% 3-Pointers and 90% Free Throws) and he did that in back to back years. Further, he won the first three 3-point contests held at the All Star games. These are just some of his many accomplishments which helped earn "The Hick From French Lick" his other moniker of "Larry Legend."
