I actually was a friend of Brother Theodore. He was always trying to be romantic with me. He was quite a character. Glad that so many here enjoyed seeing him. He was a total original.
I have a lodger from slovakia like this. I wondered where he got it from.
Also the connection to the Chipmunks at the end is that Alvin has a brother Theodore. Brother Theodore. Get it? Sublime!

Brother Theodore was a fascinating man.. A survivor of the horrors of Dachau.. He was helped to immigrate to America by Albert Einstein. He had a regular spot at a small club on 13th street in New York for years…

Yup, saw him twice at The Rep when I was a kid. My uncle who lived downtown took me and my brother. He was the voice of Gollum in the original Lord of the Rings animated movies and was in the film The Burbs.
He was that rare Holocaust survivor who, instead of being exterminated, was actually kicked out of one of the concentration camps on the first day.
Was not expecting that NBC Saturday morning bumper at the end. 😮

this is the kinda stuff that made letterman the best show on tv. the animations after are great

Ah, that might have been the case.
This was the first Letterman-show I saw at age 14. My dad videotaped (Betamax) this and showed it to me the next day. Dad absolutely HOWLED at this segment. Letterman was on every night after this.

Fun fact about brother Theodore. He was imprisoned at Konzentrationslager Dachau. He was actually let go, but only after he signed away his family fortune for *one* Reichsmark.
Yes, a tragic, horrible story. Hardly a fun fact. It’s a testament to the kind of man he was that he was able to reinvent himself after losing everything.

I remember staying up late in the 80's barely a teenager and witnessing the gift that was Brother Theodore as he would frequent Daves show. Back then I was too young to fully appreciate the combative genius but seeing tgese today fills me with immense nostalgia. Good bless Dave!

Agreed. One of the great things about Dave's show were the strange and unusual "characters" he had on the show. Seems like the networks are too terrified to have anything but "celebrities" pitching endless, mindless shows lost in the cable world. Brother Theodore was a unique character, much like Professor Irwin Corey, that will never happen in television again.
@@josephgabriel3609 For me, the ultimate Letterman guests were Brother Theodore, Terri Garr, Sandra Bernhard, and Bev Tanner. All guaranteed belly laughs. I loved Dwight the Troubled Teen and Chris Elliott as Marlon Brando and The Man Under The Seats. The NBC years were the best part of being an 80's kid. The greatest thing would be if this show could be released on DVD.

Brother Theodore played one of The Klopeks in The 'Burbs(1989). He was also in the 1976 "comedy" Gums.
Herzog, Schwarzenegger, and Brother Theodore walk into a bar. Only one exited. Brother Theodore...a couple hundred pounds heavier. Oh, the bones, Dave! The gristle, Barbara! Oh, the gristle and the bones! Happy New Year to my one and only podcast. Here is to 2024!
