I miss both Jackie and Rodney, I remember sitting with my Dad on Sunday nights watching Gleason. My Dad has been gone for 30 years and I still miss him. It never goes away. This humor never gets old.

Watching on a black and white television set with a 2" speaker. We didn't have a color set until 1972.
Variety shows like Jackie Gleason, Ed Sullivan, Carol Burnett, Sid, Dean Martin, Red Skelton, Johnny Cash. My Dad would laugh so loud just like my grandfather would and like my brother does now.

I had the honor of seeing him perform in front of a full house about a year before he passed. He lost some of his timing, he was slurring some of the lines, told most of his older jokes. When he finished we all gave him a roaring standing ovation for about 5 minutes chanting "Rodney!!" He tried not to cry. We love you Mr. Dangerfield!! Here is the respect you always deserved. Just thinking how hard the angels are laughing when he performs in heaven.

He broadcast the show live from Miami when all live prime time shows came out of LA or NY because he was The Great One so the network set it up - a big deal when live television was transmitted over many parallel and expensive AT&T lines. His ratings were great so the network made plenty of money.

In the summer of 1985, I was stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia. One weekend I went home to Montgomery, Alabama for a three-day pass, and it was at a local theater there where I saw “Back To School”. The place was packed, and that movie was hilarious; Rodney Dangerfield had the entire audience roaring with laughter (especially how he was humiliating his ungrateful wife, Adrienne Barbeau). I mean Rodney had the whole cinema audience in tears.
I reported back to Fort Stewart as required, and just a few days later, I chose to go see “Back To School” again. This time, I went to a theater in Savannah, Georgia. The exact thing happened there just like the Montgomery theater: packed out, and Rodney had that Georgia audience constantly laughing. Thank you, Mr. Dangerfield.
