  • Good kidney function is essential for good health. To protect your kidney function, you have to know what to eat and what to avoid. There is a lot of misinformation out there, watch this and then do your research.
Eat less protein, eat more protein? Avoid saturated fat, don't worry about fat? Carbs are fine, carbs are bad? So much noise out there, but there must be a proper way to protect your kidneys.
When you discover the Proper Human Diet, you will feed your kidneys what they need to renew and repair, and you will remove the slow-poison that is damaging them. The growing dialysis clinic industry isn't interested in teaching you this...

I can feel the difference doing keto. I just got off a cruise the day before Labor Day. On the boat, when I walked up the stairs, my knees ached with every step I climbed. Consequently, I went on keto and dropped 40 pounds. Feel MUCH BETTER.

@@lawrencehamm1478 Lost 40 lbs since Labor Day? You're doing well. I've lost 50lbs since Mid-July but I'm finding it hard as of late to keep my Carb intake low. They are what would be considered good carbs mind you. But my upper limit has increased to 50 net per day.

Kegeshook - I atospretty much restrict my carbs to green veggies (spinach, kale, collard greens, turnip greens, Brussels sprouts, cabbage) to keep my carbs low. Perhaps I have been too restrictive, but I have another 30 pounds to shed before I start adding a little bit extra (i.e., carrots, sweet potatos) into my diet/lifestyle. You might also look into a short term experiment into carnivore diet.

not to rain on anyone's parade, but you lose like 7+ lbs of water weight whenever you stop eating carbs. it has something to do with how water molecules attach to carbohydrates. anyway, i have seen it happen with me when i lose weight fast when i quit eating carbs & then gain it real fast when i start eating carbs again. Why do i say this? Don't get discouraged when you feel you are plateauing when you quit seeing the weight drop at that crazy rate. It was always discouraging to me, so it's good to just know that to have realistic expectations imo.

When my doctor told me I was diabetic, when he asked me when did I want to start taking medication I stopped him. I said, "What can I do to not take the medication?" He told me I would have to cut back on the processed foods, stop eating pastas, and rice and carbohydrates and starchy foods. I told him I had a diet that I had wanted to try first to see if it would make a difference. It was a 9 week program including exercise, low carbs and raw food and in the nine weeks I lost 15 lbs. Didn't feel hungry or like I was on a diet because I followed the glycemic index and ate mostly from the "green zone". I was surprised by the weight loss because I had weened myself slowly back from sugar and stuck to the list. I went back to my doctor and he said I was no longer diabetic. Just because he said that doesn't mean I can go back to my old ways. That was a wake up call for me because diabetes is in my family history and I am doing so much better...Not on any medications and two days away from my 49th birthday. Feeling 24 (even though I don't look it anymore.).

This is an awesome video. I believe that keto has helped my mothers kidney so much. Feb 2017 my mother had kidney cancer and it resulted in removal of kidney. She was already in CKD stage 3 and when she lost her kidney her remaining one was already so damaged from diabetes that she dropped to stage 4 and almost 5. And that's the day I decided to do keto, which meant she did keto. And it's almost been two years and her kidney function has remained almost steady with small fluctuations. And her nephrologist was against her doing this diet from the start just from the word keto. But once I explained to him what we were eating, he was like that sounds like a great diet but just not keto. So I agreed to disagree but we stayed keto and it's been awesome. Shes lost 35lbs at the age of 68 and I've lost 130

Bryan, thank you for sharing this! I am 63 and also lost my left kidney last year (3-18) due to kidney cancer. My urologist actually encouraged me to remain Keto (I had been keto 1.5 yrs. prior to finding out about my kidney cancer). He was more concerned with me NOT developing T2 Diabetes or having high blood pressure because of a higher carb lifestyle. His opinion was those two were much worse for my healthy kidney than eating a low carb diet. I've since transitioned to a very low carb diet and will have my next 6 month MRI scan and blood tests to make sure all is well in my abdomen. I'm so thankful for Doctors like mine and Dr. Berry who are truly making a difference for so many.

I grow, can, preserve, and consume my own vegetables, you wouldn't believe my Heirloom Spinach and Kale. SO MANY GREENS. I do eat some seafood and limited poultry, raise free range chickens for fresh, high quality eggs. I eat NO fast food, processed factory garbage, or fried foods. I do like steel cut, unprocessed oatmeal with some fresh berries for breakfast, but little other carbs. My doctor says my blood work looks like that of someone in their thirties. Oh, and I walk my two large dogs several miles EVERY day. Keep up the great work.

Oxilates! I have sent you many messages on this. I started keto lost a bunch of weight. I was doing spinach kale beet greens and almond flour. 2 years later my hair was coming out in handfuls. I lost half my hair. I studied oxilates and slowly wean off high oxalates did more carnivorous approach to keto. I switched to macadamia nuts (only a few) and iceberg lettuce. 8 months later my hair quit falling out completely! High oxalates can cause leaky gut, hashimoto thyroiditis osteopenia liver stones and kidney stones. They have found oxilates in herniated disks. Also when you turn to low carb Vegetable many are goitrogenic. I limit my exposure to cauliflower and broccoli etc. I don't eat them every day or even every week. This could be why so many do better on carnivore. Women losing hair on keto have been experiencing hair regrowth once on carnivore. Please Dr Berry look into this. They are saying the vitamins and minerals in spinach kale (high oxalates) aren't even that bioavailable all nutrients are locked up as calcium oxilate or potassium oxilate. More carnivorous approach only do certain low oxilate vegetables occasionally and keep the goitrogenic vegetables to a minimum. My hair is growing back. Please help people with this!

How well you teach the whole picture to people out there, who work hard & have no idea in their mind how their body is functioning inside & sadly never know until it's too late. I can hear the crying, in my thoughts, of so many women caring for their husbands while dying of kidney disease. One story I promised myself to never forget when I was a young professional in my career & saw a man dying of renal failure from year after year having the dye injected to monitor his heart. He grew old, never dying of a heart complication, but he died of kidney failure!!! (From the diagnostic testing of his heart function-the dye!!!) If I could send a special message to Heaven, to reward you with good merit, to come to you & your family, for making this video, I WOULD DO IT!!!

Great Video and thank you for backing up what has work for me. I discovered Paleo and Keto June 2017 one year after a kidney transplant. I gained 25 pounds very quickly and my nephrologist told me to do sit-ups to lose the weight. I knew that was Horse S#@t; I was as a certified personal trainer for 10 years. I was on hemodialysis from December 1987 until June 2016; kidney failure due to bladder reflux (if your kidneys go, that is best way). I believe the prednisone, 5 mg daily, has made me super carbohydrate sensitive; the transplant team seemed not to have any answers. Before my transplant I was in decent shape considering the damage 28 years on dialysis did, 5'9" 175 lbs. 12-14% body fat, after I was 185 and 23%. After changing to Paleo then easing into Keto I dropped 20 pounds (some muscle loss) in a months. I have had set backs, but my body has been repairing most of the years damage and I moving forward at 50 years old. I just join your Patreon and thank for you inspirational content, David Richter

Thank you for this video Dr. Berry. In a few hours I'm going to visit a friend who is currently on dialysis and just came home from hospital. He is 37 years old and has already lost most of one foot. He's bedfast atm and on many medications. I've been sharing your videos and talking to him about the ketogenic WOE. He told me earlier today that his home health worker is going shopping for him tomorrow and could I help him make a list of keto foods. I am so hopeful that he really gets hold of this lifestyle because I know he will be well again. I trust that in a year's time we will be seeing a new man

I now have moderate kidney disease.... due to taking 1 Aleve every night for about 1-2 years... that mixed with my particular blood pressure pills is bad for kidneys. All of my doctors knew I was taking those meds, and in fact, they recommended it. In addition to that, when my kidney numbers started going south, when I would ask my doctor about it, I was told it was not an issue. I now have a wonderful kidney doctor that know what does and does not damage kidneys. What a shame that my perfectly good kidneys got damaged for no good reason. I think the medical community should be more aware of the damage some of these meds do.

Back in July I collapsed and almost passed out at work due to a blood sugar spike, a follow up with a doctor revealed that though my blood pressure and other vitals were good that my A1C was 11 and I weighed 319 pounds making me an uncontrolled Type 2 diabetic. I was put on 500 mg of Metformin twice a day and a statin for my cholesterol. I knew that Diabetes was the number one cause of kidney failure because my father was a dialysis patient, his kidney failure may have been caused by the steroids he took when he got Lupus but still didn't want to suffer that same fate or deal with any of the other nasty complications like the ones my severely diabetic uncle has been dealing with for years. I quit sugar cold turkey, dramatically reduced my consumption of carbs and did a lot of research and found your videos as well as Dr Jason Fung and Dr Eric Bergs videos. I also put myself on an excercise program that combines cardio with weight lifting and the results speak for themselves. Fast forward to October and my cholesterol went down rather than up, and my A1C went down from 11 to 6.6 which prompted me to stop taking my statin. Fast forward to now and my weight is down from 319 pounds to 275 pounds, my energy and endurance levels are the best they have been in years and my muscle mass is increasing rapidly. It is becoming increasingly clear to me that low carb diets work and the current recommendations are seriously outdated, whenever I have tried to eat the amount of carbs the ADA recommends with the exception of my workout days I tend to feel sick and my blood numbers skyrocket.

I went Keto about 6 months ago. I quit all my medications except one about 4 months ago, (working on that one as well). One blood test for kidney function is called eGFR. The higher the number the better. My eGFR went from 55 to 72 over this time period. 90 or more is considered perfect. My A1c went from 8.5 to 5.9. Triglycerides 174 down to 100. HDL is up 10 points as well. I lost 25lb of weight without going hungry. All of these things are good things. What is not to like? I told the doctor at the next visit we can go ahead and take my triple bypass back out. Yes, I have not felt this healthy in a while.

@@qthirteen13 Even with known heart problems, (stents at 50, triple bypass at 62), doctors are more interested in saving insurance companies money by not running tests, so I have no previous CAC test that I could compare to.
For a number of years I complained of sometimes feeling poorly after a meal. Doctors looked at my fasting glucose levels from previous tests and said I was fine. I bought my own glucose meter and found I spiked up to 595, (should never be above even 180). After we did an A1C test that showed high, I asked the Dr. why this test was not done during the last two years. His reply was insurance doesn't like to pay for the test. Wonderful, I get to feel bad for a few years so insurance can save some money. The insurance company now owns the medical practice, so things will not get any better. I have to be my own health care advocate, and insist on things.

Three upper hernia opps and a left hip replacement this past Dec.15th. I didn't let pain stop my activities BUT what I didn't know is what cause my kidneys to fail.... I took twice a day over the counter anti-inflammatories for my aches and pains. Every spring I have blood work done along with a physical, my blood pressure, cholesterol, heart, etc. is and always was perfect. All because I was uneducated about taking anti-inflammatories on a daily routine for a few years. I'm trying to keep my numbers the same, but they are dropping a point a month. 59 three months ago and now I'm at 55. I live in the uk and had never heard of Keto until I discovered your channel two days ago (and subscribed) I am pretty much bed bound due to MS , Arthritis,Ibs , Anxiety and Depression, I have had my gallbladder removed due to gall stones.
I have not found that eating high amounts of fat ( the wrong fats) have caused diarrhoea,I had chronic constipation until I recently decided to remove wheat from my diet, that has improved things so far .
I also went back to a vegetarian diet because I dislike the way animals are kept and slaughtered.
However my Fiancé has been unhappy about my being vegetarian (although he has still supported my decision) because he feels that my health has deteriorated since I have been on it .
Since listening to those of your videos I have managed to watch so far I have been questioning my decision, especially as you have emphasised that eating a ketogenic diet reduces inflammation and most of the health conditions I suffer from are caused by inflammation.
I have not yet jumped into eating ketogenic because I like to consider carefully the decisions I make and to have as much information as possible first.
I have had questions which have mostly been answered by the videos I have watched so far but I do have one that concerns me the most because of my mobility issues, I am obese ,in part because of medication and being unable to do any meaningful exercise, I am not even able to walk further than a few steps without falling at present so I am basically just one large lump of fat .
This has been worrying me considerably, I don’t eat very much at all because I am rarely hungry but I have not eaten the good foods that you talk about.
I need to ask if it is possible to lose weight eating ketogenic when I am able to do so little? I know what my doctor would say- he would tell me that it would be detrimental.
I don’t have the option of searching for a doctor who would endorse it.
So I want to know your opinion and whether you would still recommend a patient in a situation like mine eat a ketogenic diet?
I apologise for rambling on,I do so when I am anxious.
    Thank you
    Warm regards
    Jane

I believe it would help you Jane. With your inflammation lowered by eating a Ketogenic diet, you should start feeling better and losing fat. If you are dutiful, in time you should become stronger and be able to start with light exercise. Perhaps you can find a farm that sells eggs / meat from animals who are treated humanely. Best of luck.

I am quite new to the whole ‘carbs are bad, fats aren’t’ idea. But it’s always good to look at criticisms too.
So ketosis seems good if you do it once in a while (fasting) but bad as a permanent state? As ketones are quite acidic
I feel like the best criticism is that it discourages you to eat vegetables (especially fruit) and that it encourages you to eat meat, which is even worse. (I like meat too but we shouldn’t eat as much)
The argument ‘it’s still beter than the average diet’ doesn’t work for me because I rately eat processed foods and pretty healthy already.
But it’s interesting and I like finding out more and see new ideas about what’s healthy. Thank you for your channel

Ketons cause acidosis only if you do not produce any insulin at all (i.e Diabetes type 1). Normally they are in the blood while in ketosis but they are transported into cells and used, before their concentration will cause that.
Also eat a metric ton of vegetables (keto does NOT discourage vegetables) - you need all minerals to shift to fat burning and that means producing and maintaining higher levels of enzymes that revert ketons to acetyl-CoA.
Vegetables are not fruits, vegetables is a common term for plants of which fruits we do not eat.
Though it means vegetablrs that ARE NOT starchy. Cruciferous ones, leafy greens, garlic, celery etc. are the way to go.

I’m so sorry to hear about your mom 😢.
I know your comment was from over a year ago , I hope she’s made some miraculous turn around since then despite the odds.
Were you ever diagnosed with CKD?

Thank you so much!! I shared this video with my mother-in-law who has stage 3 kidney disease & breast cancer. She just started radiation 2 weeks ago. Her "nutritionist" has her on basically a vegan diet full of carbs & sugars. I'm afraid she's just doing more damage by listening to these medical professionals.

      - Yes, it is doing more damage - sugar feeds cancer. (very sad what hospitals / nutritionists have people eat!)

Dr. Berry Im so happy to have found your channel.
    Your a very knowledgeable doctor.
I’m a 58 yr old female who is just starting menopause.
I take Atenolol to control my HBP.
This drug does help but it leaves me very tired, fatigued & I believe it’s causing me so much muscle pain & stiffness I sometimes feel like I’m a 1000 yrs old..but I’m afraid to try any other drugs for hypertension.
    I’m 5’3” and obese.
    I weigh 217lbs.
I’m wanting to try the Keto way of eating to improve my health & lose this nasty weight.
I’ve also had 2 separate bouts w/kidney stones in the last 8 yrs & am hearing that Keto may encourage kidney stones.
Would you advise me to still try it?
And what, if anything can I do to modify the (Keto) diet so I don’t get any stones again?
    Thank you Dr. Berry.

Christina, I am 62, 5'5" and was 263 lbs. on 1/27/19. I took my own BP and it was 191/91, despite 12.5 mg. Hydrochlorothiazide. I immediately started keto/intermittent fasting. As of 3/6/19 I have lost 18 lbs. BP started descending after about 2 weeks and is now just slightly elevated. I've had 2 bouts with kidney stones in the past, but after 5 weeks on keto have not had problems. I realize it may happen, but I'd rather avoid a stroke than a stone at this point! If your stones were Calcium oxalate you can try avoiding foods high in oxalate such as spinach, nuts (Google it) etc. Problem is, we rarely get our stones analyzed for the composition.

I hope you read this comment and research. I think in part that water has become depleted in minerals. body won't absorb with out them. we become dehydrated even though we're drinking plenty. I put a little celtic/ himalayan salt in my water for the minerals content, body seems to absorb water better. Urine was dark, now is getting lighter.

Now you just blew my mind,I was told that protein dilate the pores in my kidney and I am on a low protein diet. So now I eat carbs because I get so hungry. And you say that it’s the carbs that damages because of the insulin that is being used to balance out the sugar from the blood. I just texted my Dr, to day reminding him to look at my blood test, and he said I am stable , the creatives in my blood isn’t more than usual .....so that means thy always look to see the protein in the blood to see if you Re stable or if your kidneys has determinate ....now this is very new info for me. I don’t weigh my food anymore and I do not stick to portions , but I do control my proteins, and now 🤷🏼‍♀️ I will have to cut down on carbs. Witch by the way I have. Surtax limit on that also ....but I get very hungry specially at night .

For a CKD patient who is spilling protein in the urine, can he still eat as much protein as normal people? Would the spilt protein cause damage to the kidneys? Doctors suggest to control the protein in urine below 0.3 g/day.

What caused kidney damage for me, was inflammation. I have lupus, and from inflammation, developed a blood clot on one of the kidney veins, which ended up destroying that kidney.

I would love to do keto diet, but over the Christmas I've hurt my pancreas and for now I'm on my own diet until my pancreas is fully recovered. I eat Blueberries, cauliflower, cod and shrimp, red grapes, egg whites, a slice of sourdough or spelt bread a day, low sodium cottage cheese, macadamia nuts, and some greens.

Would sure like some insight as to a reason how a 56 year old male, 155 lbs, with BP 128/82 on Keto could have Total Cholesterol of 223, HDL 35, Triglycerides 83 and LDL 169. Insulin is 3.0 uIU/ml, A1c is 5.4. Also, blood lipo-protiens and sub-fractions are all in the "red" high risk category.
