Majora's Mask is usually liked more than OOT anyway, personally it's my favourite Zelda game.

Majora's Mask is the hipster game to like right now. I swear just 10 years ago people would slit your throat if you didn't say OoT was your favorite Zelda.

I honestly love Majora's Mask about 1.5x better
Ocarina is probably my 5th favorite, while Majora constantly stays at the top 3

For me, Mario 64 is 3, Majora's Mask is 2, and OoT is 1, becuase the game just feels better to speedrun.

as i never had the chance to play majoras mask or oot , only played majoras mask on 3ds and have oot on 3ds and part of tloz ww limited edition... i will say my top 10is rocket on wheel, super mario 64, donkey kong 64 ,mario kart, banjo bakzooie and banjo tooie, goldeneye 64 , perfect dark. Both golden eye and perfect dark i bought actually last year. And pokemon snap and super mario smash, i think that my top 10. Wish i had orge battle and conkers bad fur day..
Banjo Kazooie IS AMAZING. I'm not even raging about the Zelda stuff just because of Banjo Kazooie at #1
DK64 was better, fight me.
Rare improved:
-Music: more memorable tunes, cooler tunes.
-Graphics: game looked better and you could see a much farther distance.
-Larger game size: the game was so big it required an expansion pack for extra ram, and the rom didn't even fit on the cartridge! Rare had to use what was essentially save data to generate some levels and areas of the world.
-Controls: minor tweaks and some special moves for different characters, but about the same in responsiveness

Same here. Motion controls can be explained the same as any other Wii-U game. It's kinda hard to get used to, but it's so much better than standard controls when you get it down. Same as Splatoon. Gives the accuracy of a mouse, almost.

Mario 64, Star Fox 64, Mario Kart 64, Mario Party 1&2, Yoshi's Story, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Super Smash Bros, Banjo Kazooie were the games I loved and played the most. It be hard for me to pick my #1 out of all of those though.

It really takes a video like this to make you realise how many great games the N64 really had even though a lot of them didn't age that well.
My personal favorite is Ogre Battle 64. So many good memories about playing this game with my best friends of the time plus it had good visuals for the time and an amazing soundtrack. Really loved it.
My other honorable mentions that wasn't on this list would be Diddy Kong Racing.

There's a 2 frame punish in sm4sh as long as someone tries to grab the ledge while lower than it. It's during the actual animation of grabbing the ledge so you can always do it as long as you practice. Still, it might as well be random or none-existent if you are just playing casually.

Hey, I can really appreciate that your list included some titles that might not make a generic top ten N64 list, and that it was tailored to your unique tastes. Seeing titles like Bomberman 64 and Gauntlet Legends made me smile. We are all different and I like seeing some of these other lesser-known titles get some high praise.
Great list, Jirard! This makes me want to see a Completionist episode on Mystical Ninja starring Goemon even more!

Just played it to completion chapter by chapter across the last week or so and it hasn't aged one bit. It's absolutely incredible. After hearing what happened with the last two and a half paper mario games or whatever, my only advice to the team responsible for the next one is PLAY THE FIRST ONE. it's everything a paper mario should be. I only consider TTYD to be higher definition and an alternative to the original - not better, not worse. I hope like mad that the franchise turns to its origin. ...I'm still cranky about nuts and bolts.

I guess what upsets me about that comment is that as a 14 year old at that time, it's not that you want to be for one system or another, it's that you can only afford one. I know that he didn't mean it like that, but I really believe that people who don't buy all the systems don't buy them because they can't afford them or don't have space for them in their house. I think that if people have the money, they will buy all three systems. If they don't have the money, then they buy one and defend it.

I'm not gonna argue your opinion because It's your opinion lol. But, OoT Is GOAT.. Kondo is a genius with that soundtrack, and the dungeons and everything is still amazing to me. I love Majoras Mask, both games are magic to me and always will be. I did play both of these games hundreds of times as a kid using my Prima guide to 100% it.. but that has nothing to do with how epic those 2 games are.
I like MM more as well, always have. I got a MM shirt on and a MM cover :B

Hey man, nice video! This is the very first video i watch from you and i can tell you have a burning passion for games like i do. I don't entirely agree with your list but i respect it. I would've mentioned some good old classics like donkey kong 64, diddy kong racing, pokemon stadium 2, mario party 2, mario kart, FREAKIN CONKER, but hey, i know for sure this is what gaming is about, different opinions and different criteria but the same love for games. Great list, man. Thanks for putting, Mystical Ninja on it, that's by far the greatest game I played on my N64 back in the day. Sure, I really like Banjo, but Goemon really blew me away! I was obsessed with the story and the soundtrack. Here's my top ten:

I would love to see a Perfect Dark completionist because Boy oh Boy there was A LOT of stuff to do.
Not only Missions with 3 levels of difficulty but you had Combat Simulator Challenges and the Shooting Gallery with 3 different challenges.

dont get me wrong, i liked DK64 a lot myself, but top ten of N64's library? sorry but no, it had some cool things about it, but a lot of repetitive and lame things too, having to switch in and out of barrels to get certain colored bananas was terribly tedious, and note this is coming from a completionist standpoint, maybe if you only switched characters enough to finish the game it wouldnt be so bad, but completing DK64 is about as fun as slipping on a banana peel.

sooooooo much!!!!! This game is always forgotten when people talk about Rare pre MS. It was freaking awesome but tbh the controls don't hold up. The XBO version however in Rare Replay fixes everything.

Can't really say how happy I am to see Goemon on this list, freaking loved that game back in the day. The number one game missing on this list for me was Mischief Makers. Don't know if you've played the game Jirard but its a ton of fun and I never got a chance to complete it, since as a kid I hated collecting stuff in games. Hope you cover it some day!

Woo!!! Mystical Ninja starring Goemon!!! One of my favorite games on the N64. The music, characters, levels and writing were all very good.
Definitely wish more people played it, so we could start getting the "Japan Only" titles exported overseas.

Goldeneye has aged very poorly, Ocarina has some annoying gameplay, and I've never played perfect dark so I can't say anything
@@dangergun2346 Perfect Dark is essentially a more fleshed out goldeneye at its core, I think it's aged better than GE in some regards, except for the worse framerate lol

I'm really glad that Super Smash Bros is on this list. It's one of my favorite games, and probably my favorite in the Smash Bros series (followed by Brawl, because of the Subspace Emissary).
For Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, I honestly don't think that I could have picked one over the other. Before the 3DS version of Majora's Mask came out, I would have said Ocarina of Time, but that's because I don't think I ever even made it to the first temple in Majora's Mask; it was too hard for me, and the game terrified me. Now that I have it on the 3DS, however, and my skills at video games have gotten better, I'd say it's an honest tie between the two for me.
I'd definitely put F-Zero X and Kirby Crystal Shards in my top 10 N64 games, too.
Majora's mask is better than ocarina of time. Hands down one of the best.

Mad props for making Banjo Kazooie your NO.1 pick... It was probably the game that blow me away the most as a kid since I wasnt really impressed by it and ONLY got it via my younger siblings getting the game AND ended up loving it myself. I still have a GREAT sense of accomplishment for getting the TRUE ENDING in that game.
Dont know what it is about RARE (old rare)... but their games were dare I say perfect. Donkey Kong Country 2 (got the true ended in that game too) being one of my all time fave games... it seemed that the Banjo Kazooie (spirtual sequel) was as you said, perfect.
Awesome countdown, and MM>OoT. I think I'm the only person who was sad, but not surprised, that Kirby 64: the Crystal Shards wasn't on the list.

I feel no one used to like Majoras mask; I don't know when it changed. MM was always my favourite as a child (Rocked that gold cartridge). Everyone else complained about the saving/the 3 day cycle, yatta yatta.
I loved the dark tones, the constant bearing off the moon looking down at you and the lack of hand-holding. My boyfriend recently played it for the first time and he didn't do any of the side quests... he said he liked it, but it makes me sad - I feel like he missed out on the heart of MM.
Also, Banjo still holds up really well to this day. I have Rare rewind and that game is tough as fuck and a shit ton of fun.
The rule of thumb I've found for sequels is that the game to invent a legendary formula gets all the glory even though the sequel is usually better. This is especially true for the N64. People praise Goldeneye over the World's not Enough, Banjo Kazooie over Tooie, etc.
Majora's Mask holds up better than Ocarina of Time because the iterations since have done more to mimic Ocarina, while Majora's Mask is still unique. Think about it. Take out the Ocean, and Wind Waker improves on most mechanics while throwing in stylized art. Twilight Princess, again, improves most mechanics but gives a more realistic style. Skyward Sword's style blends some of both styles while offering gameplay that is...different.
But then think about Majora's Mask. Have we seen a Zelda game with 4 distinct "characters" to play? No. Have we seen a Zelda game with a countdown to Doomsday? No. Have we seen a Zelda game that makes a story about an entire town, rather than a villain, a princess, and the hero? No.
So at the time, Majora's Mask might have seemed like an easy sequel, capitalizing on existing assets, but the innovative mechanics and story give it a flair that has not been replicated.
Actually, I wouldn't be surprized if there's an actual time mechanic to BotW.
But regarding towns and such, we sorta do. There's Link's Awakening (It's arguable if Nightmares are actual entities). Like Majora's Mask, it's also a sequel to a previous Zelda game.

1. I guess this is a pretty opinion based thing because I like the dungeons. None of them blew my mind except for Stone Tower and The Goht boss fight ,but I don't think I can really persuade you there.
2. You have all the time in the world to do exploration (considering the time loops) and a slow down song. The game is more harsh in how you spend your time ,but it actually gave you more to do. After playing MM, I grew disappointed in how many of my side endeavors actually gave me something in OOT. Especially Hyrule field. It's so big with all these holes and space ,but there's hardly any worthwhile activity in it.
3. Though I think doing side missions adds a bit more to the main story, I'll admit that OOT does have a better main story ,but the world feels more alive with MM. People that'll go their own ways regardless of your input, more to collect and more to discover about the people in the game.
Overall I think it's your opinion on the 3 day mechanic and linearity preference vs completion (and maybe some nostalgia) that usually decides which game you prefer. Personally I enjoy MM more because of the dark tone and more fleshed out world and characters ,but OOT is great too for its main story and dungeons.
OoT's Hyrule Field makes me wish consoles had mod support.
i like most of these games, but some of my childhood favorites that i never see on any one's list are: Road Rash 64, Rush 2, and Battle Tanx Global Assault. Maybe it's because these were even better playing them with 2-players
I LOVE that you put the Gerudo Valley theme as the closing music! It is definitely my favorite musical track from any game. Love it! Although I have to disagree. while I have mad love for MM I just slightly prefer OOT. But still love your videos!

I grew up with Mystical Ninja and it’s always been my #1 game on the 64. So glad someone finally mentioned it
Mystical Ninja was one of my first N64 games. Really nice to see it get some recognition considering how few people actually had a chance to play it. I must've played through the whole thing like 8 times, at least. One thing Jirard didn't mention was the MUSIC. OMG, the soundtrack had some really great tunes in it that I still get stuck in my head sometimes: even now.
Majora's Mask! Yeah bi***es! As a game and as a Zelda title, Majora's Mask is better (my opinion).
Ocarina of Time is an excellent adventure game and also a really good Zelda game, one of the best because it setted the standard for all the 3D Zelda titles after Majora (at least this one tried something different), but most important, Ocarina also came first.
Majora's Mask was a direct sequel of the best game of that time. Everyone was excited to have more of the same "Ocarina of time stuff", they wanted to receive more of the same without being the same. Recycling the assets, the dark tone of the story, how it starts, and the more complex and difficult pace which it follows from there. Nothing of that was the best choice.
But when you see Majora's Mask as another game, not a sequel, when you take your time to forgot everything you know about Ocarina of Time, when you aproach it with no expectations and a different perspective, that's when you will see the jewel that it is, the marvelous adventure it is, and the excellent experience it has to offer.
Ocarina of Time is basically the 3d action adventure games patent office in a cartridge. It's revolutionary and deserves all the praise it gets. Majora's Mask however was made on a dare and a tight time limit of a year, and what came out it is the reason why it deserved the spot it got on this list. IT refined some aspects from OOT, and went in a bold new direction that the series hasn't gone in since. I still believe that Majora's Mask is probably the darkest title in the series, especially with the lore present in the game.

Honestly, I didn't like it at first either, but I realized that it is meant to be taken slow. I enjoy it much more now that I spend hours exploring islands.

That was one of the strangest games I have ever played. But it became one of my favorites. And I enjoyed saying "shake shake" irl

Mischief Makers isn't that hard. There are a couple hard to get gold gems but besides that the game is relatively easy. When did he say that?

Star Wars Rogue Squadron was one of my favorites too. Liked it so much, I was hyped for the GameCube version, and I hated that game. Oh yeh, and I'm not some huge Star Wars fan or anything. Average fan. I just loved that game. and the point is... Mario Kart, (maybe) Wave Race, and Rogue Squadron would be Honorable Mentions even on my list. Oh and Perfect Dark. It's a List I'm gonna have to go check the Library of all games to create.
Waverace was the bomb, if only for the title music. Totaka put all his effort into the title song, so all the track's themes were lackluster 20 second loops.

i have star wars rogue squadron bought it some montsh ago as i had 2 and 3 also bought some months ago due to childhood memories. Perfect dark, bought last year but damn it is still good, so is golden eye imo. I am i the only one who liked rocket on wheels or banjo tooie?

it was "revolutionary" for it's time, and invented "multiplayer fps" however, it didn't age well and to be honest, Perfect Dark is just better (and perfect dark isn't good enough to end in the top10 anyway)
Temuldjin goldeneye and perfect dark both suck by todays standards. The framerate is awful. You can fix this through emulation though
both golden eye and perfect dark are pretty sweet on a PC i'll give you that :)
however, i simply answered Judez question (why isn't goldeneye on the top10) :)

the problem with DK64 is that it have to go up against all the other collectahon's, and it just doesn't hold up compated to the banjo's or conker.

Yeah, MM has a lot of flaws that get pushed under the rug. I enjoy the game, but I'm not sure it even deserves to make a top 10 N64 games at all. It's not in the top 5 for sure.
Reminder that when Majora's Mask was released there was a huge backlash against it due just how different it was. It was, until Skyward Sword, the most polarizing of all Zelda games to be released with many people forgiving it now due to nostalgia.
Except for situations like mine, where I played OOT and MM for the first time years later, even after twilight princess, I looked at them both objectively and found MM to be more engaging and enjoyable. For quite a while it was my number one. But that was 4-5 years ago, and now my opinions shifted with time. It's still a great game but once you've seen and done everything, it begins to feel shallow. (like most zelda games actually)
I don't have nostalgia for it at all.

Perfect Dark goes on my list. I've never been a big fan of FPS games, but playing multiplayer King of the Hill mode with friends and blowing each other up with the Fly-By-Wire rockets was super entertaining.
Respect for mentioning Mystical Ninjas in this list. I had many days laughing my butt off with the story with my brothers while playing this game.

When you put Majora's Mask at #2, I thought "you better put Banjo-Kazooie at #1 then". Thank you for putting quite possibly the best platformer I've ever played in here.
Personally, I do like OoT better than MM, but that's because it's the first Zelda I've ever played, and is the one that got me to fall in love with the series. On that note, don't feel bad about preferring MM. It's a fantastic game.
I have a fondness for Castlevania, Doom 64, and Glover, but your bottom picks were pretty great too and don't usually show up on N64 Top 10s. Fun list~

Cool list, Beardman. Of all the games on it, the only one I've played and don't remember that fondly was Bomberman 64. I seem to remember the controls being stiff and clumsy, and the game ended up feeling very tedious after a while. I did enjoy some of the environments and music from the single-player game, but ultimately not enough for the game to be one of my better N64 memories.
I was team nintendo, until I played FF7, and then I was hardcore sony.
