1/25/06---A panel discussion on the state of underground comics in Los Angeles moderated by author and comics scholar Michael Dooley, with L.A.-based alternative comics creatives Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez (Love and Rockets), Carol Lay (LA Weekly's LayWAY), and Robert Williams (Zap Comix).
Masters of L.A.'s Underground Comics was presented in conjunction with the exhibition Masters of American Comics, co-organized by the Hammer Museum and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

To all of the creatives out there: Write a story, pick up a camera, make a movie. I live here and the creatives are STILL HIDING. Not every human has a computer or food or a room. Here is L.A. which actually is a cosmic crossroads. Fer crissakes make a movie. Three minutes or three hours.

In a parallel reality Carol Lay jumps from her seat with a sack of multi-colored markers and three cans of spray paint. Are you artists or all you men? she mortars the guest speakers who have apparently lost the ability to form sentences. A nervous laughter ripples up from the depths of Robert Williams gut, as though he had been holding back since the War. In a minute the whole panel is plucking tools from Carol's Magic Bag of Tricks. Jaime Hernandez, in his best cartoon villain voice, schreeches "I'm gonna get you, Felix!" - "Fuck you, Professor!" sings Carol in Felix voice as her arms dance in incomprehensible swirls and swaths of color and the tablecloth is an evolving mural and the artists are mad-hopping with a wicked artist's glee and the mural takes on a scary beauty and the tablecloth and room are transformed. The panel guests are splattered and sprayed with random color. That's art, they agree. L.A. once again cocks it's salt-and-pepper eyebrow.

Apparently this guy doesn't what underground comix are!!! The only comix artist is Williams. He has to rationalize why anyone else is on that stage.
