6:25 I love how he talks about how he dreams about finding his dream comic, that no one has ever told him about. Cause that to me was his book, Like A Velvet Glove Cast In Iron, ever since I saw it at this comic shop I felt it was completely tailored towards me and I fell in love
I love the way this profile is made, very intelligent filmaking. The interview segments, comic panel choices, soundtrack, all of it very involving. Also hearing Cowes techniques etc. Awesome
Damn, I love this part where he talks about the ultimate comic book he'd like to find somewhere in Europe and then he says, that he probably feels the urge to draw it himself, because it doesn't exist yet.
An intriguing and informative profile of an enormously talented artist/writer who bridged the gap between the past and the future, the comic book and the graphic novel, and the two disparate obsessive states of mind that comprise the title of this piece. I very much enjoyed the musical score, too --and the skittery POV montages of Clowes' story-art. Three and a half thumbs up, and another thumb held horizontally, with the pinkie arched in a dignified fashion. Oh just watch the damned thing.
To say that nostalgia and paranoia are linked makes an implicit, unconscious sense. Nostalgia is to long for what is lost, paranoia is to fear what may be lost.
Why is this film maker obsessed with making everything Clowes say seem so grim? The music, close shots, and even asking immediately about nightmares when Clowes was just talking about comics composition. His comics can be dark, but they also have their own sense of humor to them. Get a grip
The new TH-cam policies in regards to replying to comments are beyond annoying. I would like to be helpful and inform the user who posted below "Man I am dying to know what that conservative christian space comic is" and tell him that if he can get access to the book "In the Studio" by Todd Hignite it identifies what the comic is and shows pictures of some panels as well. Now, because rightly no one cares about Google+, I cannot reply and he will probably never see this. Keep trying to find ways to make more money, Google! Who cares if you're ruining TH-cam!
+superskullis; A long time ago, when media industries saw they could manage market directions, they began to realize they could influence and manage interests..
@Carl Lelandt - that is so disgusting, but so true and well said. With all the fine tuning on this platform, I more than suspect corporations, especially the one this one is attached to, to do everything in their power to smash all dissent and suffocate all comers with marshmallow vanilla codeine syrup. And keep us dreaming in a coma till dead and disposed of, replaced by a continuous drone army of “earners” who generate the blood they would feed on till all the world pointlessly burns up. On the bright side, for the moment I’m still alive and hope you are, too, as I type. (8 June, 2020; 1:53pm central)
How ironic Daniel... I keep hoping OK soda will return but it doesn't. I am left to make designs, stickers and labels either directly copying, or in the same vein as the OK soda artwork I loved as a kid. I keep hoping it will come back but... it's just a fantasy.
idk if the film ghost world have something to do with him or it just the comic. don't read the end captions about the director, etc. the atmosphere of it..
WTF? My two favorite artists Crumb and Clowes both speak the same effin' way with that "vocal fry" thing. For most it seems like an affectation, for Clowes and Crumb I feel like the effort of talking is just arduous and kind of bothersome, as if unsuited and unwilling to the labor of speaking.

For anyone who is interested, the synthetic brush that Clowes is using is a Robert Simmons White Sable #2.
lol
@@timothyhill1149 why is that funny?
the days when people wouldn't tell you how they did it that's all is that ok.?
@@timothyhill1149 it's just an odd thing to lol at. It still doesn't make sense even after your explanation.

Interesting insight, brother.
what's with the crazy ominous music
it suits what he's talking about
Damn I need to read some Daniel Clowes again.
Thanks a lot for this!!! Love the Clowesinator!!!!
thanks so much for uploading this! he is definitely a personal hero of mine. =)
I love how the backing music is like straight from the Exorcist.
As I listen to Clowes speak, I'm thinking, "Now, who does he remind me of? Who sounds like that?" And then it hit me.......Mr. Rogers!
i was thinking mr burns
Wow, Thanks for this!
He sounds just like Crumb.
Yep. I have a copy of it, along with some other books by the same artist. They are truly nuts!
thanks this was interesting
Thank you!
Damn.. no seeds.

they're setting a mood so what?
I love love love love love him and I live in Oakland where everything is enchanted because of his ghostly presence...
This is cool. Wish it wasn't so blurry though
Higher res would be very lovely. But we take whatever we can get of this sort of thing, eh?
More drama than a telenovela

Such sinister music.
Does anyone know what comic the bit from around 14:48 is from? I've only read Like A Velvet Glove, & Ghost World.
It's in an 8ball somewhere. One of the later ones.
gold mommy
@yefaithful Thanks! I definitely check it out!
Thanks. I left it going and grabbed them. I'll leave it seeding...

Now... Imagine the same film, just change the soundtrack for Yakety Sax...

Do they just use normal china ink?
Does anyone know more about Pinkie Pienter? (the Dutch comic he referred to about 7 minutes in).
yeah its generally quite shit but that issue in the video is alright
The interviewer seems to have some sort of heightened insight into Clowes' brain.
All his last few books including Monica seem to b rather influenced by that Pinky comic?
26:42 nostalgia & paranoia
Is that Matt Groening at 16:46?
Why in the world is this edited like an episode of Unsolved Mysteries?
What is the Christian comic artist's name?
I think it's John Jacobs on a comic called Doctor Peculiar (I could be wrong, though).
I wonder If I'm related to this guy lol
"Nostalgie" sounds so european...
that or too much acid
Man I am dying to know what that conservative christian space comic is.
The music and editing in this piece are overbearing and give the impression that Clowes must be deranged. He seems like a nice fellow, though.
I know! The first minutes few feel like a film about a serial killer.
he looks like a killer

I think Clowes and Ware have adopted much of Crumb's mannerisms and affectations.
I prefer Chris Ware
Thanks for the shaky cam. Stopped watching when I saw that.
