The Mopar took the GTO out of the hole (maybe due to lower gears?) by a little over a car length. Then held on to win the race by about the same amount. They were pretty much dead even after the first 40 yards. Back in the day, I used to have a 68' GTO. The Judge needed a 421SD not the Ram IV , Pontiac should have kept the 421SD all through the 60s ( it was their BEST engine ) and make it a top factory option 🏁
I expected the A12 to beat the RA4 by almost a second rather than just a tenth or so. Looks like the A12 automatic had a better hole shot. May have been even closer timeslips if the RA4 had done that, but the 4 speed is tougher to get a perfect launch. Still, the RA4 exceeded my expectations.
It's so hard to get a good holeshot with a Muncie 4 speed without wrecking the drivetrain. 4 speeds and stick shifts in general are cool, but if you want to win drag races autos are the way to go.

The only problem was the Firebirds and Lemans based cars in those years where limited to 400cid, which handicapped them somewhat with a shortage of cubes. What I really would have liked to have seen was had Pontiac been allowed to install the 428 in those vehicles. That would have prompted Pontiac to develop a 428 cube Ram Air 4 for that application. It would probably have been rated at around 395 hp. Pure Stock Racing RA4 400's make around 440 hp fully blueprinted and tuned, so I figure a RA4 428 would make around 470 HP fully done. Then, especially in the lighter Firebird, it would have been more of a match for those Chrysler and Chevy Big Boys.
Back in the day I had a 1968 427 Convertible Corvette and raced a GTO Judge at the Tulsa Dragway. My best pass prior to the race was 13.38 @ 107... I don't remember what the Judge dialed in but I dialed in as 13.5. He got a head start but I caught him in 2nd gear. So he was probably closer to the listed time in the comments above. Makes me think these two were not totally stock.

My friends uncle had a 1970 455 Buick GSX and raced Hemi cars at Lyons drag strip, always edging them out. Always close but not cigar for the stock Hemi cars.
the outboard carbs are vacuum operated..the mill just draws what she needs..& no cfm limit whatsoever :D a moderate 340 is shown to want at least an 850 on a dyno. a full tilt 440, 1,000 seems like a good start. ..it's quicker to fill a bucket with a 1" line than a 1/2" line, all else being equal, after all. recalling the carter thermo-quad of the 70's-80's..they had 800 & 850 cfm models. picture a 150 hp smogged out (poor things) 318 & running an 800 cfm carb, bog free! again..an air door covered the gargantuan secondaries & the engine only drew on demand, as much air as she could. ..such a shame looking back, those fabulous 318's & 360's, 400's & 440's all restricted & trying to breathe through so much rubbish! 440's struggling to make 200 hp..such a crime. ofc..it meant over time these engines had never seen much high rpm use, bc gears like 2.45's & were just a cam, intake, dist & ign away from their former glory :D
@@gzuzsavz You have variable venturi carbs confused with vacuum secondary. It takes a very complicated system to cause secondaries to operate with variable venturis but vacuum secondaries open completely when the vacuum drops below a certain point. In order to assure that they open correctly they are usually designed to open when manifold vacuum falls to about 3 inches. They are slowed from opening by their vacuum operation which eliminates a lean bog during acceleration but they either open 100% or not at all. If you ever watch a dyno video where they have a camera mounted over the carbs you can see them drop open 100% when the acceleration starts. GM and Ford both tried variable venturi carbs in the late 70's but they didn't work well and were never used in any sort of performance application.
Pontiac should have just made the 421 SD all through the 60s and made it a top option to order and call it good , it was the top dog. 👑🏁💪🏼 Ram III or Ram IV 400 were putting out about 70 hp less.
