    The L88 Vette was tested by CC mag. back in the day They ran the numbers and est the output somewhere in the 560hp range, stock. We already know factory Hemi's with solid cams will easily make over 500hp. It amazes me that both drivers got off the line so cleanly on those crap tires. Great ET's!

    • @peteloomis8456
      @peteloomis8456 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@buzzwaldron6195No watch the beginning of the video the 427 had been bored .040 over so that takes the stock cubes from 427- 437 cubes plus it had other internal mods done to it. The Hemi Cornett this guy that made the video said the car was bought new by the driver from the factory & it is original stock from the factory plus it weighed 400 lbs more than the Corvette does after both were weighed and with that square body shape it's about as aero dynamic as a brick compared to the Corvette with its sleek and rounded body shape. The Dodge lost by .03 seconds to the much modified 427 but if you look closer at the end just as they both cross the trap beams the Hemi was starting to pull away from the Corvette because the gears in the Corvette limited any more trap speed and the engine was at max HP and basically running out of breath and couldn't pull anymore . Both cars are very nice and if I had the money I would gladly have both in my garage especially the Corvette being so few of these were made . Some years ago the Hemi supposedly won more races than any of the engines made by GM and Ford Mercury etc probably starting in the mid 50s on when the 426 came out that dominated the SS classes and dominated in the alcohol and nitro classes . The modem day top fuel dragsters and funny cars use a Hemi engine largely based off of the 426 Hemi in a lot of ways but using solid billet aluminum heads and blocks to be able to withstand the 10,000 + HP they are making now .

      BEWARE of buying original 426 Hemi's nowadays.........even if they've already been "rebuilt". Nearly all of those old Hemi's have been raced hard, beat on, and modified or doctored up countless times, in so many weird & desperate ways, you usually wind up buying a total lemon. I'm not even kidding. Mismatched caps off of another engine in the rotating assembly, and that's just scratching the surface. Don't believe it? Just ask Tony of Uncle Tony's Garage youtube channel. He's a total Mopar guy, and he built & raced nothing BUT Hemi's back in the day. He warns everyone: STEER CLEAR of the old Hemi's............you'll wind up with some weird shit that is UN-FIXABLE. Or you'll spend far more money TRYING to fix it, than it will ever be worth, and chances are, it STILL won't be right. The average guy today is much better off with a 440.

    If the L88 didn't have headers that were open, it was handicapped more than most people know. Large port heads would not be good with cast iron exhaust manifolds. Slicks were also allowed. Those two things would make a tremendous difference at a drag strip. Seems like they are always compared without them. I read an article years ago about Zora Duntov taking a '69 L88 to a drag strip with headers and slicks, and 100% stock and made one pass at 10.1.

    That was a great race between two of the best muscle car classics of the day. Neither of these cars would run those kind of times back then especially on street tires. Race tracks back then didn’t have the traction they do today but it was a fun matchup.
