Few people know that when Hurst initially went to GM with the intent to build a car that GM wouldn’t build, they wanted to build a Pontiac Firebird with a 428HO for 1968. GM wouldn’t allow it and talked them into the Hurst Olds. GM had a 400CI limit in the mid sized cars that was dropped for 1970. They also had the same restriction for the F bodies until 1971. GM was supposed to ship the 442 with the Olds 400 installed and was supposed to ship the 455 separately. It was proven many years later that GM broke their own rule and put the 455 in the 442 for Hurst on the assembly line. Also Oldsmobile was supposed to get a version of the F body but John DeLorean’s insistence that the Firebird would be superior to the Camaro caused too many delays and ate up too much of the budget.
One of the cool things about the Factory Stock drags is not only are the cars fast but the underside keep them looking as good as they run. And then this Olds beater got on the track looking like it just got pulled out of someone’s barn after 30 years.

Gotta have someone bring one first!
@@CarsAndZebras I would think with years of racing at this facility! someone b would of brought one to the races?
@@CarsAndZebras ill be waiting for it.. its due
I’ve been going for over 7 years and I don’t think I’ve seen a 1972-74 just yet. There’s always next year!
@@CarsAndZebras looking forward to it.
CR killed the poncho, both great cars. Drove and wrenched on both.

It’s so interesting the different looks of the cars. The Pontiac looks like it just rolled off of the showroom. The Olds looks like showroom took it out to the back alley and mugged it….repeatedly….
Close race... check out the MPH on the Pontiac.
Why not show two of the same year model? Between 68 and 72 there was a lot of compression loss
068 cam only had .410 inch of lift!! It was its duration that made it pull hard. Actually most Pontiac cams had very little lift except the ram air III & IV. I’m surprised you missed that, you usually don’t miss the small details no one knows about.
Yes yea yes thank youuuuu
👍
A goin Jessie.
I'll take either
The red inner fenders were actually plastic, they were available on a few different cars
The High Performance Olds Engines usually got em, W-30,s and such.
@@badass6.0powerstroke10 ya I even saw em on a restored 72 chevelle original SS 402 car a while back
I'd like to see the Olds race a 70 Buick GS455, a battle of the torqe monsters.
Edge to the Buick!
The Buick Stage 1 was a Beast, one Bad Ass 455 !
😄😄😄. Makes my pants tight 👖😬 💥💥💥.
The Olds kind of reminds me when back in the day fast cars were not pretty cars. Now days racing cars look like show cars.
You should see my cars. They aren't pretty ..... they arent fast neither compared to today's standards but my regal will be one day
👌🏼😎👍🏼
👍
The 373 gears in the Pontiac are to high that 455 would have a better top end with stock gears.
Back in the day GM had 5 divisions most dealers back then sold Chevrolets and Oldsmobiles at the same dealerships and Pontiac and Buick at the same dealerships Cadillac had there own dealership if you wanted something more expensive and luxurious looking a Chevrolets they had Oldsmobile same with Pontiac if wanting something more expensive and luxurious they had Buick Chevrolet and Pontiac was more performance orientated with Camaro and Firebird for younger people and Oldsmobile and Buick was more of a gentleman's or older more sophisticated personal luxury car brand but they all had performance models except Cadillac was the top of the line luxury brand
I’m surprised the Trans Am was that quick in 1972 they really started chopping the horsepower in 71 by72 most of the hp was gone a very sad time for car enthusiast
71 and 72 HO engines were identical..hp ratings changed in 72...the 71 was rated 335 hp,the 72 300hp bug with the rating changed...same hp both years
When will we see your chevelle on the drag strip?
Ha, never. Prices are crazy high so I sold it.
Trans am is like a beautiful girl who just needs to lose a few pounds in order to score
guy in the ta. was sleeping,
Pontiac vS. Oldsmobile!a I'm not a fan of either!! But 390hp was the factory rated 70 W30 set up i believe in 455!! But all the Old's fanatics might know if this olds has the 70 output!!
1970 OLDS 442 WAS RATED AT 365 HP AND 500 FT # OF TORQUE AT 3200 RPM . AND THE 1970 OLDS 442 W30 WAS RATED AT 370 HP AND 500FT # OF TORQUE AT 3600 RPM . AND THE 1970 OLDS TORNADO GT 455 W34 WAS RATED AT 400 HP AND 500 FT # OF TORQUE AT 3200 RPM. SO BASICALLY THE SAME MOTOR IN THE TORNADO WAS RATED HIGHER HP THAN THE BASE 442 WITH THE SAME MOTOR . OLDS BULLSHXTED ABOUT THE REAL HP AND TORQUE NUMBERS .
I believe it was rated at 370 hp gross. Different heads though. C heads on 442s. Not sure off hand on W30 which I think could have been F heads.
@@daless3526 1970 BASE MODEL 442 455 365 HP HAD E HEADS AND THE 1970 442 W 30 370 HP HAD F HEADS . THE 1970 TORNADO GT 455 HAD E HEADS AND WAS RATED AT 400 HP.

Let's see with less horsepower, less torque, less compression more weight including heavy paint job,3.42 gears the Pontiac should get blown away.Nope I will still take the Pontiac
No MOPAR..... Hmmmmmmm..... Olds!
They would have lost.
Mopar Don't Go Far !!!
The TA driver liked getting treed.
Nearly impossible to beat the 0.001 reaction time posted by the Olds driver in the first round. The T/A driver did just fine off the line.
