    Just clarifying for everybody, there is static and dynamic balancing. The method presented here takes care of the static balancing only, while the modern digital machines on your local shops takes care of both.
    A static balancing may be enough for relatively narrow wheels, like the one showed here, designed for relatively low speeds (regular highway roads), but for wider wheels and (or) for higher speeds you should consider doing a dynamic balancing.
    Other than that, great video as always!!!

    • @yuriyokota
      @yuriyokota 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      That's why they have to put weights on both sides sometimes.

    • @grumpyoldfart7302

      Dynamic balancing involves moving parts, moving in different planes.

    • @yuriyokota
      @yuriyokota 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Not necessarily. A bicycle crank arm (without the pedal) is a single solid object statically balanced but dynamically unbalanced. If you spin it really fast you can feel the bike shake.

    • @acoow
      @acoow 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yuri Fiusa Yokota I worked at a gas station many years ago. I bubble balanced hundreds of tires. We balanced with two weights and put one on either side of the rim. We never had anyone come back complaining. This spin balancers ARE better, but only when you are balancing cheap tires and/or rims.

    • @etproductions666

      This here is correct.
      You cant expect to get good results on any from of high end wheel with this.
      I've never seen this "bubble balancer" thing, and there's a good reason for that.

    I have one of these and it works great. Saves so much time vs spending a whole morning dealing with having a shop do it. I use it every time I rotate tires and I have 8 cars in my family. Also invest in an electric impact gun, makes removing and installing wheels a breeze.

  • @profaneslave

    Being I'm 55, this used to be the ONLY way tires were balanced. To be honest I thought you were gonna use tire beads.
    One IMPORTANT thing you left out (I spent 8 yrs in tire business) is show your subscribers how to make sure the bead was seated properly when the tires were mounted. There is a little line that should be uniformly like 2 centimeters from the rim all around the tire. If it is dipped in towards the rim without having the 2 centimeter clearance the bead is not seated correctly & you can balance ALL DAY LONG and still have the vibration.

      Yes but it would turn into you cutting weights into tiny little pieces and saying oh this side needs 1/32 of an ounce and really at that point it wouldn’t make a noticeable difference. I guess the idea is it’s good enough

    Scotty, I saw this video today and ran down to Harbor Freight to get the same brand of bubble balance. Inflation made my price today $82 after the Grand Opening discount of -10% had been applied. I already do my own oil change and tire rotation. I had my little car out for a cross country drive yesterday and discovered the need for balancing as it also crossed the mile threshold for an oil change due. Now I can balance the tires while I've got them off the car.

      I'm a mechanic and I like Scotty just fine. I have never used a bubble balancer in my career as an automotive technician because I've always had access to a computer balancer. Being that I've got out of automotive and went to work on turf and ag equipment, I still hate the idea of paying a shop to do my tires so I will be buying tools to do them myself at home. Over the years I have had to fix other shops' mistakes and have seen how the customers have got screwed. This is why I don't trust a shop to do work on my stuff.

    Brings back memories but there are good reasons why dynamic balancers have replaced static units. It's not just about equipment cost. The problem has to do with resolving the forces that induce "wobble" when the tire+rim mass is actually rotating. I guess static balancing can be adequate in many cases, at least from a driver/occupant ride comfort point of view.

    I decided to balance my own tires instead of letting a tire shop do it. The price of this tool is $70 and the price of the wrights (only sold by the box) at a parts store was $50. My buddy got 2 of his tires balance at $8 each lol. Will definitely save money in the long run, the box of weights will for sure last me a life time because you don't balance tires often or use too many weights to do it.

I actually favor old school tools over the large machines in the shop, for my mobile business I use a regular 4x4 tire iron, have a low profile floor and scissor jack, and one of these and some tire spoons. I do it all old school much simpler

  • @PhantasmROFL
    @PhantasmROFL 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I have one of these bubble balancers and I find that it can get you pretty close, but you can never get perfect balance with it. It gets to a point where it looks perfectly balanced, but then you wobble the wheel around and wait for it to stop and the bubble won't be in the center anymore. Every time you wobble it you get a slightly different reading from the bubble, making it really difficult to get perfect balance.

  • @coldspring22
    @coldspring22 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Scotty is right - most of time you don't need dynamic balancing. Some times you don't even need any balancing - since tires are made by high quality process and should be uniformly distributed in weight (and so is the rim). Just mount the tire, put wheel on and go for a test drive at highway speed. - if no hop or shake, you are good without balancing!

      if we consider on the quote from A D guy who posted that it's 8 bucks a tire for a balance, imagine how many times you have to balance your tires in your lifetime.. 70 bucks for a lifetime is much cheaper than 32 bucks over and over again when you replace your tires.
      But let's say you drive your car for the rest of your life which is highly unlikely but let's roll with it.. You change your tires every 10 years at full maximum if your car is constantly driven on silky smooth paved roads without anything that could damage your tires and you have your car under the shade so the sun won't damage your tires, you'd be paying over 70 bucks in 30 years.
      But since you just leave your car out to the elements and actually use your tires then i would dare to say that they won't last 10 years and realistically you'd be replacing your tires every 5 years at maximum.. So you'd actually be going over 70 bucks in 15 years realistically.
      But since weighs have a tendency to fall off while driving, you'd be using this tool more often..
      And you could balance car tires for your neighbors for a small fee of 10 bucks and get your money back after 7 balances.

    Does it matter where (inside of the rim or outside) you place the weight?

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      no, as long as the balance bubble is in the middle.

    • @timh301
      @timh301 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It does matter where you put the weights, put half on the inside and half on the outside if using hammer on weights, or put them in the middle of the wheel rim if using stick on weights. If you don't do this, you will introduce a dynamic imbalance.

    How a veteran car mechanic like Scotty, with more than 40 years experience, would agree to pay $70 for re-balancing 2 wheels is beyond me.
    And this device sounds like a good idea, except that it doesn't take care of the dynamic balancing part. This was maybe good for a Model-T, but with modern cars that can go much faster, and wheels that can go 1000 RPM at highway speeds, you need dynamic balancing.

      wilson solt Yeah, that's so expensive for a machine that will pay itself off in mere months. Balancing things as good as they can be so they don't fall off is just stupid in a country where there are tens of millions of cars on the highways doing 55-75+ mph.
