Thank you so much for making this video!! I just inherited my great GREAT grandmas wheel, it’s an Aram paradis wheel (has a mark and the signature yellow) made in Quebec in the late 1800s! The family member who had it said it didn’t work, so I expected the worst…. My mentor and I got it spinning in a matter of minutes! My flyer also has wicked flax grooves and some cup hook rust. Currently deciding how much work I want to put into it, because she does spin as is! The latest issue of the spin off has instructions for 3D printing antique wheel parts, and my spinning mentor has a 3D printer! She also just happened to receive an extra one in the mail, at the same time I got my wheel!!

@@JillianEve we have already tried printing some parts that were missing on the wheel, including the whorl. i had to modify it slightly since it was a little too big, but i’m going to try getting it printed smaller! as for the little knob that keeps the bobbin in place, footman cord and the wheel peg that was missing, i’ve found the most success in fixing them with leather strips and wooden dowels! thank you so much!!
Yes. I bought a great wheel several years ago ( in pieces - I had to go thru and pick out both the maiden and wheel from random parts!) and have recently broken it out an am spinning with it. It spins beautifully, once it got adjusted.
I had the luck to run into the AUTHOR of "The Care and Feeding of Spinning Wheels". Wow. She gave the wheel I was dragging a once over in seconds and I have since bought the book. It is VERY well organized.
Spirit Wood is who I went to when I inherited my great great grandmother's wheel! I cannot recommend them enough! They fixed my flyer and got me new bobbins that perfectly matched the one I had. It's been so amazing to learn spinning on it!
Almost finished restoring my latest antique wheels: a great wheel, and a small wheel. It is a journey, but so worth it to hear it singing again, and go back to it's original purpose. 😊

My first wheel was an antique wheel from 1860! Would never have taken the plunge but the seller had a friend who spun on it so I knew it was in workable condition. I learned to spin so fast on her!!! Hands could barely keep up!

I bought a cpw about 6 months ago. She's about 100 years old. The woman I purchased her from bought her 40 years ago and never used her! After a good cleaning and a bit of effort to free up the bobbin (it was "frozen" to the flyer rod) I was off and spinning. I LOVE this wheel and manage to spin almost every day. I have an Ashford Traditional from the 70's and a fairly new Majacraft Rose that are great wheels but my grand old beautiful cpw is my FAVORITE 😊 thank you for another wonderful video!
I'm currently trying to restore my great grandmother's wheel that my great uncle art built for her. I was given this treasured wheel but the flyer was missing so through photos we were able to get one similar that my brother in law is going to use as a pattern to create a new flyer and whirl. He is also a wood turner so he's making new bobbins as we had one of the original ones. I have been in love with spinning since I was a kid playing with this wheel. I have an ashford traveler and 20 years of spinning experience so now I am able to restore this treasured wheel, I also do leather work so I've been able to create the leather pieces that are worn out. As far as we can tell the wheel was made around 1889, pictures were from the 1940's

I’m so glad I saw this video - it is perfect! I had just left you one of “those” messages RE the purchase of an antique wheel. I did go ahead and purchase it. It is quite similar to the one in this video. The maker’s mark is in the same place, and is the person’s initials: “DC.” I installed a cotton drive band and the pedal turns the wheel and the flyer perfectly. The pedal is worn the same way you describe - I swear it was like you were in my living room! That wear pattern of the seller’s great-grandmother’s foot is one of my favorite parts of the wheel! I am missing the bobbin and the top portion of the distaff, and the hooks on the flyer are tiny and bent and not at all useable. I felt exactly the same - I wouldn’t touch those hooks for love or money! The wood is dry, but I do feel that ultimately this is a very useable wheel, and I am thrilled to have the resources you shared in your video, and I will be contacting John at SpiritWood for his help. Thank you so much for this video. It was so helpful! (And I hope next year’s flax crop is better. I totally get it! Used to have huge gardens; now live in an upstairs condo. I have a geranium.). Picked up an 1800's Swedish Split Table Saxony style flax spinner a few weeks ago at a yard sale. Missing a maiden and bearings/leathers. I mailed it off to a restorer. Can't wait to get the parts back and try it out. I've only used drop spindles up til now.

I really enjoyed this video! I recently learned to spin with a wheel and bought an older Ashford Traveler which came disassembled and unfinished. I carefully sanded and stained all the pieces and it was very satisfying.
My sister bought an antique with a mismatched flyer and a few other flaws, it didn't work out all that well, so we ended up tossing it, she then bought a new wheel from a semi local spinning wheel maker, it makes a huge variety of yarn, I bought an antique and it works really well, it makes 1 type of yarn really well but it happens to be a really nice weight to work with
I have a spinning wheel which looks very similar to this one. Sent from a friend from Sweden. 1890s probably and from a village near where she lives. She has an identical one. She was gifted this and sent it to me. Mine is made from Silver Birch which it seems was very common there. Fascinating! (I live in southern Italy)
Another wonderful video, John does incredible work. For years I restored old spinning wheels into workable spinners but not as nice as John does. My main two wheels I use currently are reproduction wheels my friend (who is deceased now) and I made. An early Saxony and a early Italian wheel. I do have a few antique wheels I use once in a while just because. Keep up the wonderful video's.
Hi Evie, I know of a woodworker who specializes in restoring antique wheels and he can reproduce bobbins if you have at least one bobbin to copy. I live in Canada though.
I have a home made pin winder,that has 2 spindles to load the weaving bobbins , that was once a flax wheel. The disstaf was removed and refashioned to accommodate the two pin winders. Strange looking animal but fun to get it working.

So inspired by this! I just picked up my first spinning wheel after years of oogling over them, an 80's Ashford single drive, had a lesson from the person who was selling (he fixes up old wheels to sell, and spins his own yarn, and on the listing he included a video of him spinning on it), spun my first hank of yarn in suffolk (it ended up being more like 'art yarn' than anything else, so i'm glad that I did end up using suffolk, clearly I need LOTS of practice) and now my new spinning wheel friend Evie (yes, I named her in your honour) is sitting next to me taking a rest so that she is ready to spin again tomorrow! I am so excited to see what kind of adventures I will have with her, the new friends we will make together via the fiber creatives in my area, and the skills we will develop together. ❣❣❣❣❣

Great video! After watching all your videos I felt confident in my ability to assess an old wheel and recently acquired a CPW from a thrift shop and cleaned it up. It was in pretty good condition, a few chips that didn't affect function, some joint separation in the drive wheel but because of the construction design it is very stable and works fine. I am waiting for some 3D printed replica bobbins to arrive in the mail but I have already spun some roving long draw and I love it! Thanks so much for all your teachings they are so helpful.
I am so excited that you featured this wheel. My mother in law left me her wheel that looks exactly like yours. I used Spirit Wood for the restoration (the shipping was $$$). He did an amazing job and was very reasonably priced. I’m having him make a larger whorl for me to slow down the action. I’m a brand new spinner abs it’s just too fast for me. He said he could also make larger bobbins. We’ll see…. Love this 💕💕💕

When you started talking about what someone's ancestors used, it got me thinking about the fact that my father's family had a cotton farm. I wondered if any of them spun the cotton.
Love this video ❤ I’ve look for a wheel. The biggest problem. People want more for it than what its worth. ( new one is less priced). Lol. I talked to lady had a lendrum. She wanted 850. For a 20 year old wheel I had to laugh I also told a lady had a ashford wheel 1050. At time new one was 960. Was with no extras. I sent pictures and price of new one Her and her friends cyber stocked me for months
My very first spinning wheel is very similar to yours. Maker's mark and the year made (1864) are on mine and needed a little restoration. I have spun on it several times and my joy at spinning with it and how fine the yarn it spins is magical. I have bought another antique wheel subsequently also and had to have a missing maiden made that thankfully looks original in turnings and stain. And that one too spins wonderfully. Great video!
I'm in the process of buying one nearly identical to this one, except it's missing the flyer and the bobbins, which I'll try to restore myself, and if they don't turn out well, I'll contact the people that did your restorations. Thank you for the timely video! Always so informative. I was gifted an antique flax spinning wheel. It had been displayed for many years. The owner thought it was a child's wheel as it's small. I'm going to contact John and see if he is able to help out with it.
I have an OAP that I'm 7th generation to have. The poor flier, bobbin, and whorl are so worn out that it's not usable. At the moment I've retrofitted an Ashford flier onto my own turned mother of all just to spin on it. I'm saving to have John replicate all the parts.... Last known check was 400 dollars. Fixed income sucks in that it seems to take forever to build up that amount, but that's life 🤞 I could build my own pieces cause I have access to the tools and the knowledge to make them... It's the whorl & bobbin ratios to match the 22" wheel that has me thumped.

Before I bought my Kromski Prelude I thought about buying an antique wheel but realized that there really was no one local who could help me restore it Before I could spin on it. I don't regret buying my wheel new from the Kromski dealer and I am very happy with my new wheel which is a little over a year old now 🙂
If you only had an antique wheel, how would you ply the yarn? The hole on mine is small and wouldn’t accommodate a thick yarn and also the spool is small
As I understand, walking wheels or other similar spindle wheels are used for short staple spinning, like wool and cotton. Whereas bobin wheels (either double or single drive) are used for spinning longer staples like flax. To my knowledge u can spin wool and other short fibers on a bobin wheel but you cannot spin flax on a spindle wheel.
My first and only wheel is a 1972 Ashford Traditional. I ordered it from the Ashford Co. It came in pieces, unfinished. So I sanded them, stained them and assembled it two after my high school graduation. My mom thought it would be a good hobby for cold winter days in northern Michigan. She's still a good spinning wheel. I taught my granddaughter how to spin on it last year.
I couldn’t find any definitive answers for the maker, Kirk. I even tried to look up a surname etymology to get some ideas but its an old Northern European name so its hard to say where the origin of the wheel came from. There are some spinning wheel collectors with the last name Kirk.
Hi there. I was given a spinning wheel that u want to use to spin my own yarn. However the person's dog chewed parts. And I have no clue how to put it together. Can you help me as to where to find parts or is it salvageable. Trying to find out how to send you some pictures
If you dont put cup holder metal in what do you put? And the bobbin is smaller then the metal it goes on and has threads. I am a little confused. Is it okay or wrong one or wrong placed maybe.
I wonder if calling a wheel a "flax wheel" or a "cotton wheel" might be more of a regional thing rather than a description of what was primarily spun on it. I'm thinking that because in the area I live in now, a lot of people call baby diapers "pampers" regardless of what brand it is. Also, it would be kind of like how people say "soda, "pop," or "coke" depending on where they live.

I just bought a $40 flax spinning wheel and will be restoring it. I bought it with the assumption that I would have to fix things. So far I am pleased with how little I need to do.

Great video! After watching all your videos I felt confident in my ability to assess an old wheel and recently acquired a CPW from a thrift shop and cleaned it up. It was in pretty good condition, a few chips that didn't affect function, some joint separation in the drive wheel but because of the construction design it is very stable and works fine. I am waiting for some 3D printed replica bobbins to arrive in the mail but I have already spun some roving long draw and I love it! Thanks so much for all your teachings they are so helpful.
I am so excited that you featured this wheel. My mother in law left me her wheel that looks exactly like yours. I used Spirit Wood for the restoration (the shipping was $$$). He did an amazing job and was very reasonably priced. I’m having him make a larger whorl for me to slow down the action. I’m a brand new spinner abs it’s just too fast for me. He said he could also make larger bobbins. We’ll see…. Love this 💕💕💕

When you started talking about what someone's ancestors used, it got me thinking about the fact that my father's family had a cotton farm. I wondered if any of them spun the cotton.

For a 20 year old wheel I had to laugh I also told a lady had a ashford wheel 1050. At time new one was 960. Was with no extras. I sent pictures and price of new one Her and her friends cyber stocked me for months
My very first spinning wheel is very similar to yours. Maker's mark and the year made (1864) are on mine and needed a little restoration. I have spun on it several times and my joy at spinning with it and how fine the yarn it spins is magical. I have bought another antique wheel subsequently also and had to have a missing maiden made that thankfully looks original in turnings and stain. And that one too spins wonderfully. Great video!

Thank you for the timely video! Always so informative. I was gifted an antique flax spinning wheel. It had been displayed for many years. The owner thought it was a child's wheel as it's small. I'm going to contact John and see if he is able to help out with it.
I have an OAP that I'm 7th generation to have. The poor flier, bobbin, and whorl are so worn out that it's not usable. At the moment I've retrofitted an Ashford flier onto my own turned mother of all just to spin on it. I'm saving to have John replicate all the parts.... Last known check was 400 dollars. Fixed income sucks in that it seems to take forever to build up that amount, but that's life 🤞
I could build my own pieces cause I have access to the tools and the knowledge to make them... It's the whorl & bobbin ratios to match the 22" wheel that has me thumped.

Before I bought my Kromski Prelude I thought about buying an antique wheel but realized that there really was no one local who could help me restore it Before I could spin on it. I don't regret buying my wheel new from the Kromski dealer and I am very happy with my new wheel which is a little over a year old now 🙂

If you only had an antique wheel, how would you ply the yarn? The hole on mine is small and wouldn’t accommodate a thick yarn and also the spool is small

As I understand, walking wheels or other similar spindle wheels are used for short staple spinning, like wool and cotton. Whereas bobin wheels (either double or single drive) are used for spinning longer staples like flax. To my knowledge u can spin wool and other short fibers on a bobin wheel but you cannot spin flax on a spindle wheel.
Yep! The trick with line flax is that you need a distaff. You can spin tow flax with a spindle wheel. Just as you said, short stapled. 🧶💜😊

My first and only wheel is a 1972 Ashford Traditional. I ordered it from the Ashford Co. It came in pieces, unfinished. So I sanded them, stained them and assembled it two after my high school graduation.
My mom thought it would be a good hobby for cold winter days in northern Michigan.
She's still a good spinning wheel. I taught my granddaughter how to spin on it last year.
I couldn’t find any definitive answers for the maker, Kirk.
I even tried to look up a surname etymology to get some ideas but its an old Northern European name so its hard to say where the origin of the wheel came from.
There are some spinning wheel collectors with the last name Kirk.
Hi there. I was given a spinning wheel that u want to use to spin my own yarn. However the person's dog chewed parts. And I have no clue how to put it together.

If you dont put cup holder metal in what do you put? And the bobbin is smaller then the metal it goes on and has threads. I am a little confused. Is it okay or wrong one or wrong placed maybe.

I wonder if calling a wheel a "flax wheel" or a "cotton wheel" might be more of a regional thing rather than a description of what was primarily spun on it. I'm thinking that because in the area I live in now, a lot of people call baby diapers "pampers" regardless of what brand it is. Also, it would be kind of like how people say "soda, "pop," or "coke" depending on where they live.
