    Again a great video Jan, could you do a video about the different types of carbon fiber you lay up in a velomobile and why which types in specific areas. TNX in advance.

    Another issue for colors is dark colors in areas that get hot in the summertime. My velomobile gets so hot it burns if I lean against the shell. I agree that day time flashing lights are very noticeable. I have people that notice my lights before they are close enough to see that I'm riding a velomobile.

      Hi Duane, it is indeed a good idea to make a video about colors in combination with heat.

    Having spent a bit of time in a kayak, I went for red and white, because red stands out quite a bit in the daytime and it's used as a warning colour in so many occasions that people will probably notice it. But as soon as the sun sets, it will fade to a dark grey very quickly(think of red items on old black and white photos).. Many marine items are a bright yellow for that reason, because it stands out on the open sea and it doesn't fade as much in the twilight hours. That's where the white half of the bike comes into play.. it doesn't get much brighter and when hit by a car's headlights, it will flare up quite nicely at night.
    But no colours will help agains distracted drivers.. On every crossing, every driveway that you cannot clearly see, be alert and expect someone shooting out of there, not seeing you. Being right(as in having the right of way) and being healthy can be two things :)

      Hi Andre, It is better to look twice if people see you. Flashing lights help them to get out of there distraction.

      @@VelomobileWorld I often even come to a complete halt and creep up to unclear situations :) But in almost 20 years of recumbent riding, I kind of developed a sixth sense for places where I might not be seen by other drivers :)

    I think the cars are white in Israel because of the hot Sun. It is the same in Florida, at least it used to be. Not many black or dark colored cars around there. In Germany there are many black or dark cars since the summers aren't as brutal (at least in the northern part)

    You say black is bad, but black cars and buildings do indeed stand out in the built environment and on the road...

    • @VelomobileWorld

      The problem is that it is hard to say what is bad and good. It depands a lot of your invoirement where you drive

    In my fifty years experience of bicycling on public roads, I can tell you that hi-vis clothing, flags, flashing lights and eye-contact are not nearly as effective as fully defensive riding. Trust me - nobody, not even pedestrians or even other cyclists, sees you. Riding my trike on local trails, I’ve had walkers fall into my lap after I’d slowed down, dinged my bell, yelled “ON YOUR LEFT!” at the top of my lungs, only to have them leap to the left while loudly proclaiming that they couldn’t see me. I ride on the grass around people now.

    • @VelomobileWorld
      @VelomobileWorld  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that is better to take responsibility to drive defensive. But if we stricked speak about visibility colors and flashing lights helps

  • @nicksutton2964

    About flags yes, they might help when you are riding parallel hedge lines or between other vehicles. As you said "make sure people see you" I think bright yellow or white and daylight running lights - flashing ones and reflector strips would be making the statement "I'm HERE!". Where I live, velomobiles are so unusual that you quickly become the centre of attention wherever you are. Probably you can't do anything about the people who are too lost in daydreaming that they wouldn't see gorillas crossing the road in front of them. That is why I think the bright flashing daylight running lights and bright colours are your best hope. As someone said in the comments, what about having the entire machine covered in polished chrome wrap?

    • @VelomobileWorld

      I also think flashing day light lights do the best job

    Science has proven that bumblebees had it right all along. The most visible color combination is yellow/black. I have a Hilgo on order, and a wrap strongly representative of those colors will be one of the first things I do. The worst color that the insurance industry has determined for cars is grey or silver (blends in too much with the asphalt, I would think).

    • @VelomobileWorld
      @VelomobileWorld  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought the worse car would be black. But now you say grey/silver it makes sence. Many time the sky is a bit grey/blue and it hard to see the difference between the 2 colours

    I'm wondering, as people see what they expect to see, if having at least part of the velomobile the same color as the "usual car" in our area could improve visibility. For example, where cars are mostly white, could a white/yellow combination work better than yellow only maybe ?
    And I say that driving a blue/lime DF that's not so visible in my area (NE of France), but with a permanent rear flashlight mounted on top of the VM which seems to boost visibility quite a bit. I usually don't light up other lights on daytime unless I go through a tunnel or something like that, because the fixed leds (including 3 additional led strips) are not very visible in daylight ; people don't seem to notice the blinkers either, so much so that I tend to check if they work properly (they do ^^).

      I think te flashing lights works the best. On my Alpha 7 I have flashing lights on the back and I am thinking to instal them ass wel in the front to attrack attention

      @@VelomobileWorld Years ago there was a pilot who wrote something in the Ligfiets& magazine about visibility for recumbent cyclists. He explained that most of the critical moments is when you enter a crossing and another participant of the traffic will see only a small surface of the ffront of a recumbent or velomobile. Another thing is that the even if you look carefully you don't "see" everything if you look left and right before you cross. Your brain computes a part of what you dont see itself based on the fragments I understood from it. Also the sharpness is limited of the are you see. His conclusion was therefore turn on a light, preferably a flashing one to trigger the attention. I pass in my commute many times groups of students on their bike and always keep my big light on in those situations and I notice it helps quite a bit.

    A question I have is about the drivetrain options. I live in a relatively flat area with a maximum of 4-5% slope. What would the Rotor cassette with 11-52 teeth be enough? And at what slope would something like a Mountain Drive be recommended?

    • @VelomobileWorld
      @VelomobileWorld  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally I drive a 11-50 from shimano with a 70T in front. We have climbs until 12% I have to admit that if the climb is long I struggle to come to the top. But by us the climbs are very short.
