Updates: - JetKVM will ship USB-C power/data splitters with the JetKVM kickstarter as a solution to power questions - JetKVM has increased the internal space from 8G to 16G - The ATX or DC Power extensions can also power the device and will also ship with it, although I did not review the extensions
I hope the rj-11 splits power out somehow, I saw your community post when you first got it and it's exactly what im looking for currently, but the power shenanigans that apalrd went over aren't too much of an issue for the use case I have for it.
I am hoping it will allow serial connection to a 4port(or more) KVM for switching inputs as this would also be a decent work-around for only 1 port for power as it would get the power from the 4-port kvm.
I backed it. I don't often have a need for something like this but the next time I do it'll probably pay for itself in lessening of frustration having to reposition stuff to get the server over to my monitors or try to find a space to sit a monitor proximal to the server.
Shocking that a product aimed at home lab customers is shipped to homelab youtubers to be advertised to their audience. Why didn't they send them to any guntuber I wonder
@@marcogenovesi8570 It does have a nice gunmetal grey finish though. And it would be fun to see how many fps it would get-out of the barrel of a gun :D
This really looks interesting, I definitely appreciate your review. It's more in depth than some of the others that I've seen and I think I am sold. I was on the fence because it's a Kickstarter of course but then it's another $20 in shipping. But, I do think this looks like an awesome product and it will be definitely useful for me so if I can help bring it in information that's what I'm gonna do. Backing now 😃
I saw this on a different YT video and impressed what I saw so went ahead and backed 2 JetKVM devices. I would love to see an SD card slot for storage but at this price point I can see why they didn't include it. Maybe down the road they will come out with updated version with more features. The way this little guy is designed I think it's a great KVM.
the one and only time I backed a Kickstarter, I got a product but it ended up being almost entirely different than what they promised. If you're not comfortable setting the money on fire, don't spend it on Kickstarter.
I had pledges end in no delivery. I also had pledges take so long as to not be relevant anymore, or the product changing completely or undergo revisions. I also had very successful pledges. It's always a risk, that's why they are heavily discounted usually. You are always free to wait until they ship regularly.
I love the concept. I would love it slightly more with the internal storage being its own 8GB (or whatever size) thing and then having a microSD slot in the back for things like ISO storage, as well as PoE. PoE would be an amazing bypass to the USB power problem, and something you'll likely have in a lot of places this will be utilized.
jeff geerling sold me on the rpi computeblade. im still waiting to get my unit. think 2 years coming up since i paid. i'm done spending money on kickstarter.
Yeah for Kickstarter, Crowdfund and etc you' d have to expect long wait times for your reward. For my PiKVM v3 and v4 I've waited several months to get mine and it was worth the wait. Now there is another KVM that I've been waiting for over 10 months and still counting. Hopefully will get it next month.
I'd like to see them move to a model like Tailscale has. OIDC through webfinger with a few ready-to-go options with known auth providers (MS, Apple, Google, Github)
looks very elegant and minimalist for its purpose! love to see it! and I do agree on the power remark, this kvm with poe power would be perfect for my use case that is short hands-on with many different systems. "Wait, how is this powered" was my first reaction when the I/O was explained. i wonder how many people actually have the need for a kvm attached a long time of statically positioned use since ipmi chips/cards are prevalent, not to mention virtualisation use exploded in the last 10 years. "adding more storage would add significant cost" I see mentioned, but does it really? I'd have guessed it to cost about $40 based on that statement alone but the backing price is $69 which almost certainly means retail will be higher. Anyway it wouldn't matter to me, nor many other people because network mounting an iso is super easy. I think the "added cost" is looking for a reason where there is none; the designers have a perfectly clear idea of this product and it truly shows in the board design/software/cloud infra. No more storage required. I'm keeping my eye on this product for a PoE release, if it works (and looks) like this in retail I'll be buying 5.
The KS Q&A seems to indicate that the RJ11/Barrel plug accessory will be able to keep the JetKVM powered. I wonder if that means you're limited to one accessory at a time. 🤔
I'd appreciate a comparison between this and the NanoKVM--the latter is RISC-V rather than ARM-based, but appears to have a similar feature set and comparable pricing.
It really seems like there's a lot of talent behind the project, and they've done a lot well, but the deal breakers: I will not buy mini-HDMI, simple as that... The lack of PoE, even passive, even as an optional probably means I won't get it... Not even a barrel jack so a PoE splitter is possible? If they fixed those I'd definitely be interested. A few other suggestions: Why include a screen at all, let alone such a nice one? - Just unnecessary cost... Use next suggestion instead Use service discovery such as SAP/mDNS-SD. This combo'd with a web app be extremely convenient Powering from HDMI power should be possible? (5v 50mA) Ethernet passthrough - Similar to desk phones, eth in and eth out
There's splitter wires so you so inject power without a whole hub. Also, no bios option to power ports when off? Also, can be powered from rj-11 and poe planned
Casting my vote for PoE instead. Would it actually cost more? I really have no idea but would love an informed answer. Physically, it looks fabulous but for something that is intended to be out of sight, I would rather a flat rectangular front face that could be placed inside a 3d-printed mounting bracket of some sort. Maybe the cost saving could be redirected to PoE?
It would certainly increase the cost, by how much I can't say. One of the challenges is preventing back-feeding power into the PC and also common grounds across multiple places, and PoE would introduce both of those problems into the currently very simple circuit. Isolating the PoE supply is the obvious solution (Ethernet is already transformer isolated on the data lines), but that requires a (small) power transformer instead of just an inductor.
The company explained in their comment section that the DC Power Extension is what you'll need to split power from the usb-c. Otherwise, you'd have to use a powered usb hub with data transfer.
Nice device, but I don't understand why (expensive) display and not POE. I'd rather have POE than the "fancy" display which is useless. LED indicators for usb-c and hdmi. IP doesn't matter. You have this devices in separate VLAN either - so you can discover the IP of the kvm either way(s).
Came here to ask the same thing. Also would be good to have some sort of hardware accessory that could be physically affixed to the computer being controlled to push the actual buttons.

Where do I sign up for the disappointment of (MAYBE) getting a device three+ years late, that's now wildly out of date? AND THEY LET ME PAY THEM FOR THIS? I CANNOT CONTAIN MY EXCITEMENT. Seriously though, please stop doing Kickstarters for hardware."
Dove into details without explaining use cases and value in detail, and glossed over setup way too quick. Typical IT geek unable to explain to non geeks. In a nutshell, this device give low level remote access to a computer. You can have secure remote access in a variety of ways. Consult the JetKVM Kickstarter for details.
