They are definatly trying to ride on Ubiquiti's Unify brand name, but then again Unify is a verb meaning "make or become united, uniform, or whole." In this case it describes the actual functionality of the system in combining many functions. We will see if it will change name in the future.
woah, for a moment i thought Ubiquiti had created this. really cool device, i imagine they don't provide battery specs on the kickstarter due to underperformance reasons
I agree, would be nice to have docker though considering it looks to be an android based OS I doubt that will be a thing they would include as there is no official android support for it and this looks to be focusing on the consumer base rather than DIY tinkerers. Either way seems like it could be useful to a lot of people.
I mean we're going to use this to make our lives easier, but this paired with some other over the counter items, and you have a fully-fledged private communications and mini internet. Those that live under that type of rule could really use a stable private internet and communications system.
Quick note: In the Kickstarter it says that it has Docker, but it seems that it's only avaliable on desktop, as shown in the picture. Maybe check it out so u can make a note in the video description? Also, great video! Thanks for sharing this interesting device with us ^^
UDR sounds a bit like how UnRaid works. It's sort of like RAID 5 (RAID 1 in this case), but operates on files, not blocks. It can save space, though usually doesn't. Its big selling points are being able to mix drive sizes, can still recover some data (not all) even if more drives fail than the traditional tolderance, and it only has to spin up 1 disk at a time rather than every disk in the array with traditional or ZFS RAID.
Thanks for your interesting review. I’m looking forward to the video on the one you made yourself … I know it’s bigger but it is more configurable it seems
Everyone one of these have made no sense as a portable back up since extra cards were cheaper and lighter. But this is a dual disk in raid, makes it a smart backup for a professional on the go. Now I shoot massive files so I need 4tb drives in this or more.
Wow, that battery life really limits the use cases to only the target customers. With a longer battery life I could see this being used as a mobile NVR with some basic detection built-in. Trail cameras, camp sites, etc...
Nice. I would be interested in running 3 of them in a ceph cluster in my van. Work on the road and have local backups. It could be the core of my mobile lab while I am on an adventure. Built in UPS and low power, low footprint. I just need a gateway and 5G uplink. My cloud is always on prem ❤
GL.inet FTW!!!! I am trying to figure out the Beryl + UT2 + Phase One XF/Fuji XT5 cameras, so I can do on-site live tethering for previews and for backups to the NAS.
Thanks for the video, but I think I will wait and see about your portable server ... as I have completed the same sort of thing for myself and use it as a Portable HomeLab
would be awesome if we could install our own open source os of choice and that it would be compatible. don’t want security issues with data exfil back to china.
I realy like this thing but the lack of docker is a dealbreaker unless you literally _only_ plan on using this thing as a NAS I can see this being handy for people who shoot a lot of videos of photos and don't wanna buy 3000 SD cards, using this as a quick SD card offloader
Refresh of zSpace T2 with x2 pricetag for international market. I guess in China also no real demand for gnarboxes, because iPad or 13 inch MacBook slightly bigger but buch more functional.
Your Mobile lab stack is nearly the exact same as mine that I’ve hacked together over the years. I am a digital nomad of sorts and I use it as my portable Time Machine.
They'd have to take issue with dozens of companies then, including Siemens and several SE Asian state supported ISPs. It's just not very creative branding.

There are at least a dozen wireleas communications companies that use Unify as a brand name. Ubituity is just the most known in America. Probably not shady at all, just not very creative.
look kinda good idea but why not just buy a linux compatible phone with 512gb storage? i guess it is more power efficient and smaller size for some case half the price
You could say the same sort of thing about every NAS and router on the market. You're describing a project for a tinkerer. This is a product that probably intends for only semi-technically inclined people to buy and use at some revision in the near future.
I keep this exact setup strapped to my wrist. So far, it has been fully effective at keeping my wife from speaking to me.
I wonder how long before Unifi's lawyers come knocking for them... 😂
Got LaCie lining up too 🤑
Yeah really. I even thought it was Ubiquiti at first.
They'll never open the door. 😅

The Company "Unify" (Siemens Enterprise Communications) might also dislike the name.
woah, for a moment i thought Ubiquiti had created this. really cool device, i imagine they don't provide battery specs on the kickstarter due to underperformance reasons
I thought the same thing. I wonder if we'll see a rename because of that.

Can’t wait for the video about your portable nas setup.
It's already available. It is called Homelab Server in a Backpack! It was released November 7th 2023.
Thank you @@Andy_Panda
Would buy this in a heartbeat if I could install plain old Linux to it and manually configure it

looks like you need to add the UDR by the + button ... although a wizard would be more logical...
0:00 glad to see I’m not the only one to build one of these monstrosities lol
If you own a mini router and don't create a mobile lab... you lose nerd points!

I have been waiting sooooooo long for such a thing...
I'm surprised Ubiquiti isn't going after them for the brand name.
they have got to reconsider that beeping noise
It sounds like my fire alarm.

Nifty! .. Though to be honest now I'm more interested in seeing your own pokeserver build.
PoE for single cable setup would be nice.
Is there a video on the Power bank pi router combo you have? Would love to have a mobile plex setup.
Looks good, Do you sell the corn based on the going rate?

Not gonna lie you and your overall presentation of the device had me focused the entire time
Think I’d rather make one like yours. Did you open source it?
I dind't develop anything for it myself, but I'll make a full guide on Github when I drop the video. :)
If I can wipe the OS and install my own I might consider it still a bit pricey.
This looks Usefull actually
We need a video on your mobile stack
So can you connect to it outside your home?
Thanks for the video, but I think I will wait and see about your portable server ... as I have completed the same sort of thing for myself and use it as a Portable HomeLab

Can you still go over how to make the other mobile server?
Where is the video where you made the other device at the beginning of this video? Pictured @ 0.03s. Thanks!

Theres a plus button in the top right of UDR
thank you for your "nerd" content!
but why not just get the Mele Quiter 4C then? already on the market, works great too.
Can we install Linux on it? No Nextcloud support means it's a useless door stopper.
Its not useful for you, doesn't mean it isn't useful for other people.
I'd love to hack one of these into a lightweight dev server
whats the transfer speed??
Honestly I was more interested in the diy set up lol!
Looks interesting, wish it supports poe in.
same thought, with PoE it would really work just fine with mediocre battery
I find it a bit disturbing that their app calls RAID1 a "backup". Otherwise an interesting product, thanks for the video!
CAN we replace the battery ?
So it's out now... any new comments to this device? Any apps on there that wasn't there when you tested it? An update video would be nice! TIA!
1 hour of battery life makes this a no-go for me.
Test speed Lan 2.5G ?
Docker does work on it.
Gotta do it thru the android OS. Watched another video of a person running it.

Yeah yeah we already saw this kickstarter nas, they send it to everyone. Better tell us more about your diy project) what is this black box on top?

Next Projekt via Raspi 5
Portable NAS isn't new. I have one a long time ago. Smaller I think😉with LAN too.
Look at Gridbase
I foresee Ubiquiti taking issue with the name.

I just want a newer version of the Western Digital My Passport Wireless Pro. Just give me that with a better CPU.
Naming it "unify" anything is shady. I immediately thought this was a Ubiquiti product.

Hello, good morning, my computer does not have sound, I tried to install your driver but it says the page does not exist, help me, I appreciate it.
Needs POE
Registering, is an INSTANT NOPE for me.
Way too expensive.
Use a laptop?😂
WHy would you need a portable NAS ? Dont you make your home nas web accessible ? Its useless !
Maybe don’t comment
@clintonherring may be get lost
@@philipperostin maybe, not may be.

I use my portable NAS as a Time Machine server. I am away from my homelab months at a time and it’s a very good and secure backup.
