Another thing people might not be aware of is the time it takes to put all that makeup and stuff on is only half the battle. He probably has to spend an equal amount of time after they shoot getting it all taken off. They have to be careful removing the prosthetics so they can use them again the next day. A lot of actors simply can’t handle that. Jennifer Lawrence only agreed to do the last X-Men film if she didn’t have to spend the majority of the shoot being blue.
It's because it's good. When the showrunners know it's not they prop the show on...something. usually sex or diversity. Then, when it inevitably fails, they can blame u for hating it. If it's good, it'll speak for it self
“Interesting” is subjective. To me what is most interesting is this proves that the gender of the show runner simply doesn’t matter. What matters is the quality of the story telling.

It isn't that audiences check out on one or the other, it's when it's too MUCH of one that audiences check out. Audiences got bored of seeing "gritty and realistic" superheroes after the early 2000s gave us a lot of them, which is why the 2010s were so dominated by the more campy and quippy Marvel movies, and why DC couldn't really cement itself the same way Marvel did(that, and most of the DC movies were just bad). Now that Marvel style movies have become the status quo, people are bored of it and want drama. Once the drama becomes the status quo, people will get bored and want more campy movies again.

The Penguin is proof that playing safe and making everything into DRAMA, still works, thus HBO still does it. Untill people get tired of EVERYTHING turned into hard drama.
As a massive fan of DC and the Gotham underworld and rogues, the amount of comments made during this that make me pull my hair out in frustration is insane. These characters don’t need Batman to be interesting. They don’t need to be constantly butting heads with each other, it’s a big city and they are “regular” criminals. Batman and the larger City of Gotham creates bigger narratives and potential for stories and foils for characters to bounce off but this idea that they need each other to tell a good or interesting story is nonsense.
This. And even if they don't focus on those heroes/villains, this gives others their chance to really shine. Like show how the mob is so powerful in Gotham. Or highlight other characters which are really lesser known like Professor Pyg or Victor Zsasz
My only issue is I just wish the whole DC universe tied together. It seems like this and the last Batman movie are their own thing. The Joker seems to be its own thing as well. The previous iteration of the DCEU was its own thing and that wasn’t connected to the Dark Knight trilogy, which was its own thing, after the previous run of Batman movies which were their own thing, and the Christopher Reeve Superman movies which were their own thing. And now James Gunn is rebooting the whole thing into another new thing.
I haven't seen this show yet, but quite enjoyed Gotham for much the same reasons. It was more of a back-to-basics crime caper and that was how Detective Comics came into being. With some exceptions, the heroes and villains didn't have super powers other than being more modern versions of Holmes and Moriaty. I think this is why I preferred a lot of the Gotham stories compared to the less plausible characters like Superman.
@@erikdayne5429 I'd rather have multiple good versions not tied together than tieing it together for sake of publicity. Having a shared universe does not make something good on it's own, all it does is open possibilities in the future. Even then there are limitations since your sharing characters and plot lines. The Batman would not be better if it was in a shared universe. The Joker would not have been better in a shared universe. All a shared universe does is allow crossover opportunities, which they can do whenever they want with the multiverse. Spider-Man is a prime example of that where those series were not connected but they still made a great cross over film from it. I'm of the same mind as SnarkyJay on the Penguin... without Batman and shooting umbrellas, what's so special about him? I think they SHOULD add in Batman, but from the point of the villain. Make Batman appear very rarely, keep him in the shadows and speaking rarely, the thorn in the Penguin's side that never seems to go away. One thing most people haven't mentioned is how Oz interacts with the guys under him. In the scene where he takes Victor to the drops factory, he talks to his underlings like equals. Which in my opinion makes him more interesting, because unlike other crime bosses we typically see, he doesn't separate himself from those under him, he mingles with them, has a drink with them and shares his life with them. He doesn't lord over them like his bosses do over him. He talks to them as equals jokes around, respects their opinions and even shows some concern over their well being, for the most part. He earns their respect and loyalty by treating them like he wants to be treated. Even later in the episode after repeatedly telling victor he will "gut him", victor gives back a snarky response when oz is about to threaten him again, by saying something to the effect of "Yeah, yeah, you'll gut me like a fish", which probably would have gotten him killed if it was said to any of Oz's bosses. Oz understands the people in the streets and isn't going to necessarily react negatively to the low level of disrespect you would get from them in general, but earlier in the show we see how he reacts to being disrespected by people he has no respect for. He knows where he comes from, where he sits in society and how will never be part of high society, which also is hinted at with the choice of music in the car and credits. Its the shabby genteel versions of the penguin we see in the arkham game series. The guy with a glass bottle for a monocle (of course the in universe explanation is it was from a bar fight where he got stabed in the eye with that bottle and now its stuck), the guy trying to use the appearance of high society, but can never actually fit in.

It may not be for you, but it is definitely a well written, well produced and incredibly well acted show. They still have plenty of time to mess it all up, Hollywood style though.
@Astronaut_Zero Colin Farrell IS great in this, I'll give you that. But I'll have to watch a few more episodes. I was NOT impressed with The Batman at all.
tbf, everyone is over-exaggerating literally ONE episode. The first episode, the episode that ideally, even for a bad show, would be made to hook people.
The ''Penguin'' was OK ,its just another crime show about mafia and all that stuff, the only thing resembling Gotham and Batman are the names, change the title and some names and u wouldnt know that it takes place in the Bat-verse. We need identity in everything except stories...
I loved the show, one of the best first episodes of a show I've seen in a while. And it must be said, though it's an obvious starement... SnarkyJay is 🔥
10:31 Oz didn't timed it perfectly... it is not an exact science. He got hurt, somewhat tortured.... almost killed. Yet precise enough to pull that great gambit. Making them kill each other... then picking up the pieces. That was the part I liked, if it was so well timed, it would not be so convincing. He paid a price of pain, to get the upper hand. For he is now a puppeteer...
Extremely boring, long winded and bloated conversations, predictable, with gross moral relativism. While it's better than what Disney is putting out, it's far from the best thing on TV right now.
Alright I think that Jim Carrey could still absolutely nail riddler in this universe, so long as he’s not used as a main character. Especially now that he’s older. Even in costume. Look at Penguin’s car. You can water down the fit to match the tone of the show.
Honestly, at this point I am simply tired of superhero and I am tired of spinoffs. It may be good, but I am simply not going to push more of this lazy creativity.
Remember, if you review something too quickly then you didnt really watch it. If you reviewed it too late then you just "waited for consensus" before publishing a safe take. So sayeth Ya Soy Zack.
The Penguin WILL meet Batman in the show - it’s inevitable. I get it that people want it to be its own thing but the proof is in the pudding: the title says it all, it’s called The Penguin not Scarface or the Last Don. The Batman reference is absolutely inevitable and will be the highlight of the entire show.
Guess I'll be the debbie downer and speculate: - Barely anyone appeared to know about this show, including me - and now that it's being received so positively, how long until the higher-ups decide to start meddling in it? - Pursuant to that question, are the writers the sort of types whom are going to panic that so many people are resonating with ol' Pengu that they turn him into a braindead moron if there's a season two?
I was REALLY surprised by just how much I enjoyed the first episode. That said, it is only one episode. The acting is incredible and hope the writing remains strong.
"The Batman" is a cinematic masterpiece, every character had purpose and impact. You are going to witness how a show should be written with The Penguin.
I think they're taking hints from Marvel and their failure to create compelling villains. I think Reeves is going to be using HBO to flesh out villains and hint at Batman. And use the movies to actually bring in the Bat as a sort of Avengers type film where it all comes together. And im willing to give it a chance if thats the case. Especially since The Batman was supposed to be a new Batman at the beginning of his career. So, in a way, we're watching all of their beginnings. It also helps that this universe is supposed to stand alone aside from the new DCEU.
too early to celebrate. Remember Batman was great at first too? and then stupidity after stupidity keep happening to the point you feel the movie just wont end forever? flashdrive? flying squirrel cape? storming the penguin's nest from the front door? get him to the light? carpet tucker? hhhhhhhh
The Penguin is very good. But I'm tired of HBO: they take a video game and make hard character drama TLOU, take Gotham comic and make hard crime drama, take ASOIAF and make Dull Dragon Drama.. I MEAN, COME ON, playing safe, for Like It Safe Brains.
It’s also worth noting that the show doesn’t need to note it has a strong female character, or a diverse cast, and a female show runner. It has all of the above and good reviews from critics and fans alike disproving the all the blame the Star Wars and marvels series place on their critics
This show sounds interesting. Colin Farrell is a good actor. My brother and I enjoyed binging on a show called Gotham awhile back that was similar to what you're describing here. I'll have to check it out. 🐧👍
Surprisingly good? That's that high standard that gets set on DC. You slap a marvel brand on that, and all of them would be like (we're back, Disney we never lost hope, we love you). Bet that.
Although he’s a criminal and callous killer, the penguin has shown too be quite endearing too viewers mainly due too the fact the show runners have gotten us too root for him seeing as he’s the underdog fighting his way up
With all the positive reviews I subscribed to max and have watched it twice. I might watch it again before the second episode tonight. It was really good.
Oz is so cold that and so volatile at the same time, so cold to lie so well in the face of death and torture, and so volatile... as shown in the beginning of the show. Some disrespect equals death in his mind. Some times sooner than later. Jr... got it sooner.
With regard to the Penguin’s famous umbrella, I’m old enough to remember Georgi Markov, who was assassinated in London by a guy with a trick umbrella, which injected poison, ricin I think, when jabbed at Markov’s leg. They could do a variation on that and stay credible.
I can see the parallel with Scarface, but the first character that comes to mind when watching Farrell play Osward is Tony Soprano. and it's funny that on its platform (at least in France), Max seems to make a clear marketing choice to compare the two series, they made a new category "the bosses" and they use exactly the same imagery (same font, same colors, and the pose of the two protagonists is almost identical) I can only hope the quality is also gonna be the same for both series
Sorry Will... but I think I've told ya so... The next best thing... after Breaking Bad and The Sopranos... Put a Bat in the mix... a witches brew that is ready to explote from the beginning, if you put a bat in it. Yet if they are wise, they will take their time to do it. Maybe to even link cinema with the series. For sure it can stand by itself, yet if after a while they would be just mad not to include "The Bat"...
Surprisingly not horrible. Do I watch not horrible thing? I try not too because it has good or great things to watch plus audio books and video games are better than not horrible.
I've always been a fan of Colin Farrell, I think he's one of the best actors of his generation. But my lack of interest in this show, much like most of the rest of what Hollywood is turning out these days, is that the protagonist is yet another bad guy. There's an overwhelming lack of aspirational shows coming out of Hollywood. Heroes are now incessantly painted as villains, or at the least there are no heroes to speak of. I am starved for stories where the protagonist is someone I actually want to root for, someone who can set an example, someone who actually behaves heroically, male or female...
I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually really enjoying The Penguin series. It's a much stronger piece of work than Matt Reeves Batman, in my opinion.
Not having batman right away makes sense. Penguin right now is a low level henchman basically. Ya he sells drugs but hes kinda a nobody. U really gonna have to build him up and that if done well can take a few seasons so its not rushed. Plus batman just had a huge villain takedown so thrusting him immediately into another one might cause here fatigue.
To your point about not referencing the movie enough, it starts right after where the movie left off so I don’t particularly mind for now: u do wonder what they’re going to do to explain what Batman is doing though

@@Astronaut_ZeroI think it was a solid 6.5-7.5 out of 10 for it to be great too me it would have to be 8 or 9 out of 10
Unpopular opinion not liking THE BATMAN is wild everyone loves that film 😂
tbf, everyone is over-exaggerating literally ONE episode. The first episode, the episode that ideally, even for a bad show, would be made to hook people.
You could easily have the shooting umbrella as a serious covert weapon for an assassination or something in a location where weapons are searched for.
The reason Batman can't be used in tv is the rights and license holders make it so convoluted a process to be near impossible to achieve.
I’m very pleased with what we’ve seen so far with The Penguin. I can’t wait to watch the second episode tonight!
It turns out that every single chatacter in the batman universe is more interesting than batman
You could have an umbrella that's also a gun in a grounded setting.
Great?! Easy there tippler.
A pleasant surprise indeed
Extremely boring, long winded and bloated conversations, predictable, with gross moral relativism. While it's better than what Disney is putting out, it's far from the best thing on TV right now.
The King of Tulsa and The Penguin have quite a lot of similarities... Yet Stallone has a season before Ferrel. We'll see.
Tulsa king
Alright I think that Jim Carrey could still absolutely nail riddler in this universe, so long as he’s not used as a main character. Especially now that he’s older. Even in costume. Look at Penguin’s car. You can water down the fit to match the tone of the show.
Obviously not played like an ace ventura type. Jim Carrey is totally capable of getting a lot more down to earth.
Awaiting for a full season to watch.
Colin Farrell, as for me - interesting actor. He's taking different roles and perform them pretty good.
Guess I'll be the debbie downer and speculate:
- Barely anyone appeared to know about this show, including me - and now that it's being received so positively, how long until the higher-ups decide to start meddling in it?
- Pursuant to that question, are the writers the sort of types whom are going to panic that so many people are resonating with ol' Pengu that they turn him into a braindead moron if there's a season two?
I'm liking The Penguin.. SO FAR. I don't trust any Hollywood show these days, it still has time to be bad. But so far I'm loving it
I was REALLY surprised by just how much I enjoyed the first episode. That said, it is only one episode. The acting is incredible and hope the writing remains strong.
"The Batman" is a cinematic masterpiece, every character had purpose and impact. You are going to witness how a show should be written with The Penguin.
It’s always about the story for me. The actors bring it together and the directors direct. If you can’t have those things, it’s just lipstick on pig.
IIRC there's weird legal tape when it comes to having Batman appear in live action television so Battison isn't happening
It was surprisingly good, well besides that the antagonist is a female italiam mobster...... but hey it's slim pickens nowadays
Prediction: that kid is gonna get killed, perhaps indirectly by some action of Batman, and that sends The Penguin fully over the edge into villany.
It’s also worth noting that the show doesn’t need to note it has a strong female character, or a diverse cast, and a female show runner. It has all of the above and good reviews from critics and fans alike disproving the all the blame the Star Wars and marvels series place on their critics
Technically the name they used for the Riddler in the movie is his name in the comics as well.
This show sounds interesting. Colin Farrell is a good actor. My brother and I enjoyed binging on a show called Gotham awhile back that was similar to what you're describing here. I'll have to check it out. 🐧👍
The acting and writing was excellent. But I really disliked the strange CGI elements that were all over. Took away from the overall quality.
Surprisingly good? That's that high standard that gets set on DC. You slap a marvel brand on that, and all of them would be like (we're back, Disney we never lost hope, we love you). Bet that.
Lance lied so hard, he never was checking googling because he was forgetting who played the penguin.
Why is everyone surprised that it was good? The Batman already showed that Matt Reeves knows what he’s doing.
I wish studios would make better content. It’s fun to see critics praising things for being good rather than damning them for being awful.
The Batman had a really great story... but an abysmal cast, except for Farrell of course.
It seems to be missed by people but seemed obvious to me that the "gangster" Oz was talking about getting a parade was his father...
Surprisingly not horrible.
Do I watch not horrible thing? I try not too because it has good or great things to watch plus audio books and video games are better than not horrible.
He's an interesting character. Amazing concept I know
I'm liking SnarkyJay. Not familiar with her content but I'll def check it out.
The Gotham series Penguin was better, didn't like the bad acting sidekick at all. Felt like filler. He killed the episode for me.
Why sell it as a Penguin film though?
*glances over at recent "What Are Next" redlettermedia video*
Oh right.
I still hope you eventually see the masterpiece frieren
Not having batman right away makes sense. Penguin right now is a low level henchman basically. Ya he sells drugs but hes kinda a nobody. U really gonna have to build him up and that if done well can take a few seasons so its not rushed. Plus batman just had a huge villain takedown so thrusting him immediately into another one might cause here fatigue.
Just watched it and am really hoping the show doesn't turn woke in the coming episodes. So far so great 👍
It was great. I loved the character of Sophia and of course Oswald is great, lots of layers.
To your point about not referencing the movie enough, it starts right after where the movie left off so I don’t particularly mind for now: u do wonder what they’re going to do to explain what Batman is doing though
I haven't seen The Penguin either. I'll watch it when it's finished.
This was a great surprise. What wasn't was only one episode being out
I don't mind that they changed his last name because cobblepot always makes me think of chamber pot
My wife never watches any superhero stuff but she enjoys the show. Depends if you need Batman in or not. Decent show on its own so far
From what i understand, the TV rights to Batman belonged to Fox, and now This Knee
That's what I was saying!! I like it so far, and I pray it stays good. ❤
Yep, I did not see this coming, penguin is really good.
AY UP DRINKER AND MAULER AND DISPARU
When Penguin?
I always knew this show would slap
YBZ got through, didn't he? 😂
Not surprising at all tbh
I liked it too
Go away now !
Good not great. Too much DEI for me
What about it was DEI?
Because of Sofia Falcone? I swear y'all will just say that Or "Woke" Even when it isn't just cause there is a woman or a poc. And i am not a liberal.

The 1980s was peak, the 90s was the turn and 2000s+ was the rise of woke. Those days are gone and will never return. Be glad to have something decent to watch rather than more leftist propaganda, show after show, after show. 3:32 Yah, she is so menacing. Such a well written character. Something between control and madness.... stablished with a single scene. Nuanced as fuck so early . Love her.
Hehhee, nvm... you guys pretty much said the same.

Farrell clearly watched the Sopranos for character motivation, he’s got massive Tony Soprano vibes in his mannerisms and speech patterns.
lets hope hes not a beta simp like soprano
