  • Iceland is a notoriously hard market for international fast-food chains to break into. Domino’s is the exception - the pizza chain has the biggest market share in fast food there. But that love for Domino’s doesn’t extend to the rest of the Nordic bloc. In October 2019, Domino’s Pizza Group, which owns stores in Iceland, Norway and Sweden, announced it’s exiting its business in those markets.

My local Domino's got shut down by the Danish Food Administration
because it had rats and was using old meat

Dane here: Domino’s in Denmark already had a bad rep for horrible pizza. The food scandal was national and put the final nail in the coffin

I'm from Sweden and I didn't even know Dominos had tried to operate here.

They keep saying that the minimum wage of almost 20$ is what is keeping the Dominos franchise from making money in Denmark. That is just plain wrong and a simplified American way of looking at it. Proof rest in the fact that we have thousands of local pizza restaurants around the country which have been making money for years - if they can do it so can Dominos with a name brand. The fact that Dominos failed to operate in Denmark speaks to the incompetence of the Dominos owners. If Dominos were to provide consistent and high quality pizzas they would easily be able to compete in the Danish pizza market where local pizza franchises often struggle to deliver good quality pizzas.

No joke, I'm literally watching this while eating a dominos pizza in Reykjavik

Also, Domino's is looked at as high priced, low quality food compared to other offerings. At least in Norway.

Sweden has it's own "pizza culture" which is somewhat swede-ified (pepperoni pizza is not as popular or common as the kebab pizza for example) and you can find them everywhere. More common than sushi places. Everyone I know has their own favourite pizzeria that they either live close by or grew up with, a chain like dominos could never do well here.

The tiny local pizzerias have a waaay too strong of a hold in Sweden for a chain to actually take over.

No one in Scandinavia mourns the loss of Domino's. In large part because we didn't know they were here...

After trying Domino's I'm surprised they're not going out of business everywhere.

Domino’s main problem in Sweden according to me is that they open their restaurant in really obscure locations. I think they would fare a lot better if they would open more stores in major citys.

Oh, also because out-of-date food and rat-infested conditions at Domino’s in Denmark where exposed on national TV...

'Grandiosa' killed Domino's in Norway 😂

Why: The pizzas are pretty terrible and the thick crust/deep dish greasebombs just don't interest us.

The thing with sweden is, no matter where you live there is always a local pizzeria. We learn from a young age that if we want pizza, we go to our local ones.

In sweden we have local pizza places that we put our trust into. Fast food piza chains like Dominos dosen't work at all. The only one that is doing decent is Pizza hut. "you can't out pizza the hut!"
