  • Drive-thrus were developed in the 1950s to make fast-food even faster. Drive-thrus have been surging in popularity-nearly 40% of consumers reported they’re using the drive-thru more often. To stay competitive, providing solid drive-thru service can be make or break for a restaurant.

One time when I was in community college, I went to lunch at a Burger King near campus, but I went inside. My change was a little less than $5 but the cashier gave me $5 even to simplify things. They even held my dessert until was through with the rest of my meal. I went to that BK again last week and all the employees had masks and gloves. IIRC there was also a plastic or Plexiglas screen in front of the drive thru window. Some of the best fast food service I've ever had, and I'm glad to see that it's still as good as it was back then.

& if you pay cash, COUNT YOUR CHANGE BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE WINDOW. Short change artists can pocket & extra $100-$200 a day & its the perfect setup--if they get caught shortchanging, they CLAIM it was a "mistake". Funny thing is, if it were a "mistake" as they claim, you'd get back too much roughly half the time--but you are almost ALWAYS shorted so there is NO "mistake".

FUN FACT: digital “menus” make you spend more by using videos/moving images. The combination of your eyes not having enough time to see the tiny price print and only the bigger picture of the food + the feeling of having limited time to order makes you make a decision not considering the price.

Then again, I don't go there often and usually pick somewhere else, so maybe that biases my experience. People stuffing their face with fried foods and some of them are here 3-4 times a week sometimes! Going out to eat become less of a “treat” for the family and simply something people rely on now. End of a shift I don’t even want a burger, I want some fresh fruit and maybe some veggies and hummus and I’m a huge meat eater.

@@Imnotfatimhibernatin You are absolutely right. Fortunately, my mom prepared home cooked meals every day. Looking back, I definitely appreciate what she did, despite having a full-time job. We perceived take out as junk food. Therefore, it has alway been viewed as a "treat" we get every once-in-a-while. Literally, I can count on one hand how many times my mom brought us junk food as a kid (minus parties). Culturally, we've substituted junk food as our main source of nourishment. Anything that's quick, that's what we get. This change in lifestyle, plus our sedentary jobs, makes us massive.

I always find it absurd when some people would rather wait 20 minutes in a drive through line running their engine for $5 meal rather than just walk in and get it in 3 minutes. The 20 minute line completely negates the point of “fast food” which is sacrificing your long term health for short term convenience.

I actually noticed myself using drive thrus less over the years for this very reason. When a single order at mcdonalds takes 10 minutes to get in to my hand, I'm just wasting my time. I've started to notice if I go inside and order, I get my food before a single drive thru order is pumped out. It's FAST FOOD, I could care less about the customer experience, or the cleanliness?(idk how a clean drive thru effects my overall satisfaction) the only thing that matters is the accuracy and the speed.

FUN FACT: McDonalds’s first Drive-Thru was built in Sierra Vista, Arizona and is still there even though it was recently remodeled. The idea for McDonald’s to start adding Drive-Thru’s actually came from the location in Sierra Vista because of employees at the close by Fort Huachuca Army Base. So if anyone thought they did it because of competition, nope they did it cause at the time soldiers were apparently not allowed to go inside anywhere outside of the base while wearing their uniforms. A few years after the first McDonald’s Drive-Thru it became more about competition & popularity rather then having a way for those who served in the military at the time be able to get fast food. I have personally been to that location many times but don’t go there every time I go to McDonald’s because I don’t live in the area of the first one.

    Story Time:
My mom went to the Drive-Thru to get us McDonald’s (I wasn’t there I was at school), she ordered as usual until she got an urgent call from the building (she’s a manager). She was so focused on the phone call that she forgot to pick up the food on the other window and she left without realizing she left the food. When her call ended, she was looking for the food until she realized what happened. She wasn’t mad tho she was laughing so she went back to the McDonald’s. The employees weren’t annoyed with this they just laughed and got the food back without having to pay again

I absolutely HATE how Chic-fil-a is doing their drive through. Employees standing outside in the burning sun, freezing cold or pouring rain. Asking me what my order is. Am I supposed to know the entire menu by heart? Is there anything new? What is the price? It all just makes me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. I fear an employee is going to get a foot ran over or worse. It all reminds me of how Apple acts. "You will do as we say at wherever price we want and like it"

@@unknown-hb2to You are right. The menu card that has been passed around to others. That is just what I want to do before I eat, touch something that everyone else has touched. If only they could enlarge the menu and place it on a post outside of the vehicle so everyone can see it at once and not have to pass it around the inside of the car. That may also help to speed up service. I sat yesterday eating lunch at a different restaurant and timed a Chic-fil-a drive through. A double drive thru. Still took 13 minutes from start to finish for each car. They just break up your wait time by having you interact with an employee 3-4 times for something before you get your food and are able to eat your plain chicken sandwich with two soggy pickles. I guess if I had to wait 10-13 minutes to get a old sandwich (placed in a foil bag made 3 hours ago) I would tell everyone it was the best and worth the money and wait. But I guess if I really think about it, it is not the bread, meat and pickles alone you are paying for. It is also the smile you are paying for. For some people that IS worth the money and time.

You want to read all the stuff, which is poorly arranged and lit awkardly, and do so in a timely matter to be respectful of others.
Then you finally start to order and a giant douchy truck pulls up way to close to you with an extremely loud exhaust spewing smoke at nauseating levels while at the same time you're trying to place your order but the speaker/mic sucks so you have to repeat your order several times in a loud, yelling like matter, just for some employee who doesn't care because he knows youll drive off and is getting paid crap so he puts no pride in it will give you the wrong order.
Thats not including the douchy trucks revving their engines and stopping last second behind you everytime you stop at each thing.(intercom, pay window, food window)

I sort of wish CNBC provided links to their full interviews with the industry specialists. I think those interviews would be fascinating; and more accessible than digging through trade magazines.

The drive thru isn't falling, especially during the pandemic where you can't even dine in anymore.

I've never used a drive through. If I ever order fast food (which is extremely rare) I just walk in.

I don't think I've ever been through a drive-thru. Deciding what you want in 30 seconds because there's a line of cars waiting behind you? No thanks.
