Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) is one of the antelope species that’s quite easy to spot as they look quite different and are most often not far from water. They have a very furry coat as the hairs on their body is quite long. And they have a white circle on their rump. Some might say to looks like a target and some might say looks like a toilet seat. But it is marking for when say the waterbuck is being hunted by a predator and they run into the bush the young waterbuck can focus on the white marking to not get lost in the chase in the bush and can follows its mom.
The waterbuck is often find in small breeding herds of unto 30 mostly with the 1 male or sometimes 2 brothers and sometimes the male would take on a younger male almost as an apprentice the younger male wouldn’t mate with the female but would help to protect the females and might take over the herd if something happened to the dominant male.
Waterbucks gestation period is about 8 months and although the baby could stand within 20-30 min of birth the mom would hid them in long grass for 4-5 weeks before they would start to venture out with the mother.
Waterbucks like other antelope natural predators is lion leopard, cheetah, wild dog hyena but also crocodile. As the waterbuck has a special oil gland in their skin that secret an oil that makes the hairs water resistant so they don’t get wet when running into the water to get away from predators. Now most predators would not follow them into the water. The only one that would is hyena they would go after the waterbuck into still standing water, but this is where the crocodile now also become a predator and sometimes the waterbuck has another problem and that is the hippo doesn’t want them in the water so the hippo will chase them out and the predator will wait on the bank. But the waterbuck is not on the predators preferred list as that oil that they secret has a very strong smell and unpleasant taste.
Only the males have horns and are bigger than the females. The males weigh about 200-250kg and females 170-210 their natural lifespan is about 18 years and there about 5-6000 in the Kruger National Park.
