there is an older short story were it explicitly states they use the same gene seed as the grey knights. I'm hoping the "imperial fist successor" is as accurate as the silver skulls being "ultramarine" successors.
I love that The Exorcists are the Dorn Chapter that generates the greatest Psyker Potential in its recruits whilst The Black Templars, also sons of Dorn, can short-out Psyker powers just with their presense. And have 0 Librarians in their Chapter.
The badass lore that sets up the backstory of the Excorcists only for a company of them to be slapped around by lucius and his bull headed companion on their home turf was super tough to watch
don't care if they say these guys are Dorn Stolk I still thing Gray Knights are their parents. it fits in the theme more than just "they are another Crazy Dorn Boys" that apparently Inquisition said. I really like the Exorcists for the crazy lengths they go and their design is cool.
They've used The Horus Heresy to sort of further the lore for them also, I think. Not just Successors of Dorn, but perhaps Thousand Sons that were Loyal and stood with Imperial Fists at Cthonia. They've at least gotten some love with expanded lore.

Had they kept their Thousand Sons Geneseed progenoids, they would have succumbed to the Ruberic spell. Hence the Thousand sons that were trapped in time and returned to the modern setting within minutes succumbed to the Ruberic and they disappeared before the spell. So the whole thousand sons anything but thousand sons in their current state is pretty much ruled out by current lore of the Ruberic spell.
One problem is the fact that the Grey Knights originate from Black Shields, so their gene seed is derived from a multitude of legions. That being said, I feel you on that one 🤘👽
The White Dwarf article was so bad that the current Space Marine codex lists their origins as unknown again. It's bad fluff compared to all the other old stuff about the Exorcists.

Would love for the Red Templars to be next but I know they're lore-light. We know they're bikers, their name might tie them to the Inquisition in some way, and their symbol is a fleur-de-lis. In my head they're kind of like the second company of the French Musketeers, who answered to the Cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin. I suppose with their chapter symbol they could even be close associates of the Sororitas too.

when the live action cinematic universe of 40K begins these guys should be used to introduce and explain chaos and chaotic possession among the astartes
Ok so how were Relictors so much worse that they are a renegade chapter of Paladins so holy they can use chaos artifacts. But the formerly possessed marines are chummy with daemon super "secret" marines who of course are not as good as the uniquely super duper golder taller marines. All the while flavors of flawed marines and armor types eras will be replaced by newly color swapped slightly more ultra legos.
By description, they sound very Mary sue & fan fiction. But there's something really cool about them. The role of Grey Knights without all the baggage of being "the best of the best assholes"

My head canon the exorcists are descendent from the word bears stock. Cuz both like to stick demons inside them selfs but only one have them removed and I feel like they should at least be one successor, chapter of each of the traitor, Legions
These guys have to be word bearer in origin. Both wear red armor, both mumble voodoo chants in battle, both let demons possess them, both have giant demon skulls on their armor. No way they arent lorgars.

I think GW confirming Exorcists are IF successors is one of their worst lore additions in recent times. It just makes them another one of the flock. When there was no confirmation it makes them more interesting and if you feel you HAVE to confirm them, make them either GK or Word Bearer successors - something….not bland. Personally, someone at GW who’s incharge of writing must have a hard on IF in recent years.
These guys are Sons of Lorgar, the iconagraphy and zealous adherence to their holy texts just screams Word Bearers. If you created Word Bearers without Lorgar, Kor Phearon and Erebus you could end up with something resembling the Black Templars without the emphasis on martial prowess and instead emphasizing knowledge and wisdom. Lorgar, Erebus and Kor Phareon were the weak minded, resentful worms that Chaos easily corrupted. Without those three the Word Bearers would have stayed true and with Corvus Corax in his final form hunting them in the warp well their days are numbered.
It's a fun concept for a chapter, but i always thought it kind of stuck out in 40K. Chaos and chaos corruption is like radioactive material and cancer, increased exposure eventually leads to corruption. On the tabletop, i would expect if they have an advantage over daemons, they should have a weakness against tau and necrons, or something. I mean, it wouldn't make sense in reality, but it's how things work on the tabletop, or at least used to haven't played since 2014.
These were better when they were Grey Knights gene seed and not Dorn's. I dont know why GW keeps doing these pointless retcons that add nothing except disruption.
Their original heritage was Ultramarine. I can better believe them as sons of Dorn due to their stubborn nature. When they were said to be successors to the Grey Knight I called BS because the geneseed of the GKs was created solely for them and is only on Titan. The gene banks of the adeptus biologis were never given any of that special geneseed.
